I see that the WaPo has picked up on that story I mentioned last thread. Right now, it’s the second most-read story.

Christianity Today, an influential evangelical magazine, says President Trump should be ‘removed from office’

The evangelical magazine founded by the late evangelist the Rev. Billy Graham published a surprising editorial by its editor in chief on Thursday calling for President Trump’s removal. The magazine has been critical of Trump but not politically outspoken during his administration.

The piece, which appeared to draw so many readers that the magazine’s website crashed briefly, was written by Mark Galli, who called Trump “a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.”

“Whether Mr. Trump should be removed from office by the Senate or by popular vote next election — that is a matter of prudential judgment,” the editorial said. “That he should be removed, we believe, is not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments.”

I’m not going to say ‘yay rah rah!”. I’m more hoping for injuries on both sides.

So White Sands is getting an upgrade to National Park. So cool. They’ve been hoping to become a National Park for years.

Can’t believe it happened under tRump’s watch. Must have slipped it by the stable genius, being that he doesn’t represent our state since we didn’t vote for him.

That’s kinda where I’m at. If these folks were serious about any of this, they’ll vote for the Democratic candidate next year. Which they won’t.

As has been pointed out several times before, any Never Trumper is only pissed off that Trump says the quiet parts loud. They’re fine with all the kids in cages and rich people never paying taxes again. They just want someone like Kasich or Romney who isn’t suffering from obvious dementia.

Two of the past three days my CERT team has been deployed to help firefighters. We are now doing decontamination in addition to supplying water and a rest area if they need one, scrubbing them down after they go into a fire so they don’t carry the stuff back home. The fires both started in the attic, not a Christmas tree fire or anything like that.

Our fire department is mostly voluntary, and I found out that my son’s band director is a volunteer fire fighter, whose job is to drive one of the trucks.

You know, I’ve never seen ‘Cats’- either live or the movie version- and yet I have an undying hatred for it sight unseen.

Of all the amazing things T.S. Elliot left the world, the one that the vast majority of people are probably aware of is not Prufrock or Wasteland, but Sir ALW’s jellicle ball nonsense. I know that there are some issues with Elliot’s personal beliefs, but at a minimum, one of those two poems would appear on any top ten list of English poetry. “I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each./ I do not think that they will sing to me.” Is one of the best couplets ever. Not to mention, “not with a bang but with a whimper.”

And all most people know about him is a bunch of air-brushed, Lisa Frank inspired cat-cosplayers. Dancing demanding numbers, I’ll grant. But still.

Flame off. (Although I will admit, Sir ALW did leave us one good thing- and that’s Paul F. Tompkin’s impersonation of him. So, a certain synchronicity there.)

(ETA: I tried to find a youtube for that last bit, but didn’t have any luck. But for anyone who has Netflix, I highly recommend Comedy Bang Bang’s “Casey Wilson Wears a White Lace Dress & a Black Blazer.” Just amazing on so many levels. In fact, I’m going to go re-watch it right now.)

You bet, Trump desperately wants to be cleared by a Senate GOP trial, as much for his own narcissistic ego validation as for his re-election chances next year. If Pelosi and the Democrats in the House can continue to deny him that ego validation, he’s gonna end up experiencing some kind of ego breakdown.

It worked in 2016, along with massive active voter suppression and enough trolls, bots and ratfuckers to convince people to be indifferent or apathetic (“the parties are all the same” “Hillary is also corrupt”, etc.)

It is the only strategy they have left, so it looks like they have to double down on the voter suppression and outright tampering and manipulation.

The GOP have blocked any attempts at making our electoral system less vulnerable to tampering and manipulation, and will be the first one to decry “voter fraud” if they lose.

Heck, even when they one Trump still claimed “massive voter fraud” to explain his popular vote loss.

Precisely. Does anyone really believe Donald Trump has any understanding of how the government works? There’s a reason imo why his cabinet is full of former Congressmen. He goes with who he thinks will be the most slavishly loyal. He doesn’t see Congress as a coequal branch but rather there to do what he demands. Emphasis on demands. There’s nothing democratic about this man. His political role models are tyrants. He’s also profoundly stupid. He really has set the US back and made things easier for state and non state actors that don’t want the US leading on anything so maybe that’s why Greenwald co-signs on his bs.

so dems want at least *the chance* at a fair trial

They say the trial has to be fair, with senators acting as impartial jurors, and that Mr McConnell’s comments show he has no plans to do this. He earlier said Republican senators would act in “total co-ordination” with the president’s team.

hence the delay at least temporarily

we all know McConnell, one person, one senator of 100 singlehandedly is holding up *all* dem legislation.

Trump’s goal is to dismantle the administrative state — and he is succeeding brilliantly, with the wholehearted collaboration of the Republican party. All part of the long-time Grover Norquist mission to make the government small enough to drown in the bathtub and Bannon’s quest to destroy everything that makes America “America”. This isn’t a reflection of Trump’s stupidity — but American stupidity as this destruction continues apace in broad daylight. We are diminished daily, shrinking into Trump’s petty personal fiefdom — and not a peep from the Republican Party.

There has been severe criticism above of Never Trumpers — and certainly most are not our friends — but many are, in fact, vehemently and vocally opposed to Trump’s love affair with Putin and other despots; they strenuously object to his actual foreign policy and not just his style.

In private business you can make everybody sign an NDA. In the government there are whistleblowers.

In private business you can fire the previous staff and replace it with your people. In the government there are career professionals and specialists who are hard to replace.

In private business you can just let everything go to hell, declare bankruptcy, pay pennies on the dollar and walk away from the smoking rubble. In diplomacy, those debts and those partners are not going to just dry up and blow away.

Like I just wrote, house has a larger d majority than the r Senate does

Donald Trump has said he ‘doesn’t feel like’ he’s being impeached because the impeachment inquiry into him was ‘a hoax’. Responding to the question of how it feels to be the third president impeached by the House, Trump criticised the Democratic party saying ‘they happen to have a small majority and they took that and forced people’, adding: ‘they put the arm on everybody’.

Teddy's Person  Dec 20, 2019 • 6:59:53am

Remember Crystal Mason, a 43 year old woman of color and mother of 3 who was sentenced to up to 5 years in prison for casting a provisional ballot in Texas. She did not know she was ineligible to vote because of a previous conviction for tax fraud.

Well this happened in New Hampshire

A [nice, white, elderly] couple who split their time between New Hampshire and Massachusetts pled guilty on Monday to charges that they voted in both states during the November 2016 election, but they told NHPR they only did so to avoid prolonging an already onerous court battle with the state.

… As a result of their guilty plea, the Flemings were fined $1,000 each, with a penalty assessment of $240, and lost their right to vote in New Hampshire. They were also sentenced to 60 days imprisonment, but that was suspended for one year on the condition of good behavior.

In an earlier interview shortly after the charges were announced last year, the couple told NHPR that the double voting was just an “honest mistake” — that they voted absentee in New Hampshire but forgot that they already mailed in their ballots when Election Day rolled around, and then voted again in-person in Massachusetts. …

I don’t think the Flemings should spend 5 years in prison but neither should Ms. Mason.

And the Trump-voting Mr. Fleming takes his ball and goes home.

“I’m done voting, period,” John Fleming said. “I don’t care what state it is. It’s not worth it. It’s not worth the aggravation I’ve had to deal with, the stress.”

I was assured by John Roberts racism was over in America.

It to me has always been disturbing how Trump even publicly takes Putin’s word at face value and no one in his party calls it out for how absurd it is. It’s hard to know whether Trump is that naive or he really is that heavily influenced by Putin and he’s saying it aloud that he takes Putin’s word over the IC and he’s fine with advancing Putin’s interests. I’d take Castro over Pete and what you’re getting at is exactly why. Julian offers a lot of ideas to the conversation. He also speaks for a growing constituency in the party and no one is better on the immigration issue than he is. I also like that he has executive experience as both San Antonio’s mayor and also as a cabinet secretary so he’s got a good understanding of how government works on a local and federal level. I really hope he’s vetted for VP again or given an important cabinet post.

My big worry here is that every time the Dems have tried to “play it safe” and go with “electability”, they lost (Gore, Kerry) - by close-enough-to-steal margins, but a loss nonetheless.

I don’t blame black voters at all for having no faith whatsoever in certain segments of the white electorate…but it feels to me that, if every Dem is going to be slathered with the “socialist” brush, might as well go with the real reformer.

Last night I chatted with someoneone who got triggered by the one comparing Donald to Greta and implying Greta was the adult one, and the guy quickly escalated, insinuating that there will be a Pinochet-style coup against “the libs/traitors/commies/”whateva, and I “better not choose the side of the Uruk-Hai.”
Now, the thing is, I know the ropes. I know that if the call comes, I have 72 hours to report to active duty. I know the specifics on how the order is given, and the special way it needs to be rescinded in order to be legit.
I know that in both the country where a live as well as the country whose citizen I am, there is no way the military could pull something like that off without foreign assistance.
Taking foreign assistance in order to overthrow a legitimate government is high treason in both Sweden and Finland. No concept of international law and the laws of war, poor sod doesn’t realize that he and his crew will be insta-unlawful-combattants and will be dealt with as such.

He’d rather make popcorn movies which is his choice but I am glad he’s expanding his range. Sometimes a comedian surprises you with that. Sacha Baron Cohen in the Netflix series about Eli Cohen for example.

There are multiple cruise ships in port in major tourist areas all the time, without collisions. I’ve seen four or more more than once. Can’t wait to see the inquiry report on this one.

Also, they were lucky as hell they just grazed her. The area they smashed was dining rooms, not likely to be very full at this time of day, but one deck lower is passenger cabins. People likely to be there at this time of day.

Or not. Apparently wind conditions were so bad that the harbormaster closed the port to sail and snorkeling/scuba activities. All it would take when they’re that close is one big gust or rogue wave, and smash!

(Both ships have advised their passengers to enjoy their shore day.)
