I saw the show on Broadway and came out of it thinking - how the fuck did it ever get considered a hit in the first place? It was a muddled mess, but Memory was a great song.
ALW knows how to write beautiful music, and yet none of that papers over the fact that the show is a mess.
So, what did anyone expect from this movie? Those actors in it figure to have their name associated with a “beloved” Broadway hit, much as those who participated in Les Mis movie did (and Les Mis the movie was far better in most ways other than Javert being horribly miscast with Russell Crowe).
This appears to be horribly conceived, staged, and produced in every way imaginable.
And I suspect, some will go to see it in all of its horribleness just to say that they did.
I wont be one of them.

It’s kind of like a musical riff on the Star Wars Holiday Special, directed by Tommy Wiseau, if he was a furry-obsessed porn director with a deep love of bad disco from the late 70s.

Poor guy got the stink eye from his family but he was a patriot. Lee was not. Lee didn’t take his oath to the commonwealth of Virginia. Southern propaganda really is why Lee is not properly understood today. It doesn’t change that he definitely had some skill as a general but he benefited too from poor generalmanship from his counterparts. Until the Richmond campaign, I’d argue the best counterpart he faced in the Eastern Theater was Meade. McCllelan was way too cautious and Hooker, McDowell, and Burnside were not commanders of entire armies which is why Chancellorsville, Bull Run, and Fredericksburg were disasters. That also helped the Jackson legend too. IMO the CSA general that doesn’t get the respect he deserves is Longstreet. They still taught his defensive techniques at West Point well into the 40’s but Longstreet was hated by the Southern friendly writers because he became a Republican, Catholic, criticized Lee in his memoirs, and took a job in the Grant administration.

I think about it. I think the North really just wanted to move on. And I get why that happens after a long, bloody war but whereas you had friendly reunions at Gettysburg well into the early 20th century between white CSA and Union vets, the surviving black Union vets had to worry about offending the local Southern governments, the Klan, or really any white person with power in the South. That’s what makes the takes defending Emmett Till’s lynching so absurd. He was a child. Even if that whistling story was true which we now know it is not, the fact that it was used to murder a child. And you know what, we still see relics of that today when people try to justfiy the Treyvon Martin murder because of Treyvon either having smoked pot or gotten in trouble at school, all things that happen with children of all racial backgrounds at that age but go out of their way to talk about the white kid credibly accused of rape of “Being a good kid aside from that” as if rape isn’t a horrible crime not deserving of punishment by the law.
What we’ve really discovered in the past 48 hours is that, despite the constant refrain for much of the past three years, Trump never wanted to be impeached and doing so was not “playing into his hands.” What he wanted was to be “acquitted,” particularly for the Russia investigation, because then he could run in 2020 on the lie that he was the “victim” of a partisan conspiracy that had failed to remove him in a “coup.” And it’s driving him nuts that the woman he once believed would never impeach him is now standing in the way of that “acquittal.”
I don’t imagine that life is very good for Sen. Yertle right now, with Donny screaming in one ear and his wife screaming in the other about scrutiny finally falling upon her obvious influence peddling.

That’s the best take on the movement I’ve seen. It’s an easy enough basic philosophy to get. But the smugness especially on the economic matters because a lot of em fancy themselves enlightened because they can cite Hayek in discussion when they’re really no more smarter than the average person in economic matters. They’re really in a way like doctrinaire Marxists. Legalize and privatize everything. They get why police brutality is a problem but they thumb their noses at those who think privatized prisons are shady af. It gave publicly traded companies a bunch of money they used for stock buy-backs, raising their share price (which is often the criteria by which senior management bonuses are calculated), and again 5% will be recycled back into donations to Republican senators.

It got really weird in the late Bush years because so many people didn’t want to be part of the “conservative” movement they tried to take over the libertarian one.

Plus from what I learned from one of the few left of center people in the economics majors, they weren’t really given too much head room for free thought on academic papers. I never had that problem in the history department. That’s why I get amused at brobertarians who act like they’re the guardians of free speech. I’ve seen how libertarian institutions deal with dissenting thoughts. They’re not authortarian but dismissive and have I think unfortunately a bit of an oligarchical world view. Where wealth determines a person’s selfworth.

I remember one time he told the C students of the world they too could be President and it annoyed me given his pedigree. And he definitely had no problem smearing the critics of the Iraq War through his allies including a lot of the now Trump right wingers who insist they’re against “intervention” which of course bothered me too.

That’s what I think people need to consider when they get upset at Michelle for declaring W her friend. I listened to both his and Michelle’s memoir on Audible. It was just so good to hear their voices again. Good people. Really. I really wish I had volunteered for the Obama campaigns but I never did. I was transferring to college in 2008 and I had recently graduated in 2012 so no time really focus on politics which I wasn’t really doing in 2008 anyhow since 2004 had been such a disappointment for me since I thought no way Bush would lose.

What we’ve really discovered in the past 48 hours is that, despite the constant refrain for much of the past three years, Trump never wanted to be impeached and doing so was not “playing into his hands.” What he wanted was to be “acquitted,” particularly for the Russia investigation, because then he could run in 2020 on the lie that he was the “victim” of a partisan conspiracy that had failed to remove him in a “coup.” And it’s driving him nuts that the woman he once believed would never impeach him is now standing in the way of that “acquittal.”
I don’t imagine that life is very good for Sen. Yertle right now, with Donny screaming in one ear and his wife screaming in the other about scrutiny finally falling upon her obvious influence peddling.

I’m so NOT a libertarian. OK, maybe for a few seconds when I was a kid, but no. I want a lot less frivolous laws. I want much more personal freedom. But I also want my damn food inspected and the firemen to save my house if it goes up in flames.

1. I don’t think that West Point is riddled with racists, but I think it’s a bit naive at this point to assume that any institution is going to be so thorough as to keep a few from slipping in through the cracks here and there. It’s also a bit unfair to hold them to that high of a standard, especially as it’s known that the military and law enforcement are targets for infiltration. The institutions aren’t going to be perfect in screening. What they do need to do is their best to keep them from entering and kick them out as soon as they reveal themselves.
2. I actually buy that this might have actually been a bunch of juvenile BS and 3 not West Point Cadets maliciously or ironically throwing white power signs. There’s also a fair point it was 3 West Point cadets throwing white power signs and West Point’s more than happy to push accept this excuse, not because they’re into tolerating racism, but rather because they’re engaged in a bit of institutional ass covering.
