This one from the NY Times is great, too:

“It’s amazing to see what Adult Swim can accomplish with a $100 million budget. I never knew Tom Hooper was capable of making a surrealist nightmare that would rival Jodorowsky, that could baffle David Lynch, that would prompt even the dark god Cthulhu to emit an impressed eldritch shriek of ‘nehehehehehe’.”

I saw the show on Broadway and came out of it thinking - how the fuck did it ever get considered a hit in the first place? It was a muddled mess, but Memory was a great song.

ALW knows how to write beautiful music, and yet none of that papers over the fact that the show is a mess.

So, what did anyone expect from this movie? Those actors in it figure to have their name associated with a “beloved” Broadway hit, much as those who participated in Les Mis movie did (and Les Mis the movie was far better in most ways other than Javert being horribly miscast with Russell Crowe).

This appears to be horribly conceived, staged, and produced in every way imaginable.

And I suspect, some will go to see it in all of its horribleness just to say that they did.

I wont be one of them.

A sampling:

If only they used cats instead of demons…

…awful movie. Plus, Taylor Swift is on there, which makes it even more intolerable.

More crotch shots than a Michael Bay movie. I felt like the FBI was going to raid the theater.

Would not go to again. However, I did enjoy the scene where it was just people’s names.

This is not a movie, it is chaos…I cannot tell if I am five minutes in or five hours. It is the death of all things.

I can feel the light inside me fading.

Cat-ass-trophic waste of effort by everybody conceptualizing, producing, promoting and even watching this film

Oh God, my eyes.

Spectacular disaster. This movie feels like a prank, but I don’t know on whom.
It’s more like being trapped inside the head of a crazy cat lady that’s tripping balls on peyote. I felt kind dirty afterwards… I can’t decide if I need to see it again or if I need therapy. Maybe both.

It’s kind of like a musical riff on the Star Wars Holiday Special, directed by Tommy Wiseau, if he was a furry-obsessed porn director with a deep love of bad disco from the late 70s.

re: #51 HappyWarrior

It’s a product of the age of mass media for sure. I don’t think we’ve had a SOTU not broadcast for close to a century.

From wikipedia:

George Washington delivered the first regular annual message before a joint session of Congress on January 8, 1790, in New York City, then the provisional U.S. capital. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson discontinued the practice of delivering the address in person, regarding it as too monarchical (similar to the Speech from the Throne). Instead, the address was written and then sent to Congress to be read by a clerk until 1913 when Woodrow Wilson re-established the practice despite some initial controversy, and an in-person address to Congress has been delivered nearly every year since. However, there have been exceptions to this rule, with some messages being given solely in writing, and others given both in writing and orally (either in a speech to Congress or through broadcast media). The last President to give a written message without a spoken address was Jimmy Carter in 1981, days before his term ended after his defeat by Ronald Reagan.

I’m sort of surprised that Carter gave one in 1981. Usually the year after an election there isn’t technically a “state of the union” address. There’s usually an address to a joint session a couple months after the new president is sworn in, but an outgoing president giving such a speech strikes me as unusual.

Right. But the smugness especially on the economic matters because a lot of em fancy themselves enlightened because they can cite Hayek in discussion when they’re really no more smarter than the average person in economic matters. We analyzed one in a class for grad school. If I recall correctly, the textbook didn’t even mention slavery. I’ll have to poke around in my files to see if I kept anything from that class.

We thankfully learned Virginia history in school so when I heard 1619 project, I immediately got the reference to Jamestown. What’s unfortunate though is we never learned about the role of The Byrd Organization here in preserving Jim Crow. Senator Kaine’s father in law and a Republican at that was one of the first Virginia governors to support integration. He’s now a Democrat.

I thought the white Randolph descendants fought the Hemings descendants for acknowledgement. Jefferson left the Hemings children out of his will iirc.

This is a great book that lays out all the ways Jefferson’s white family tried to dodge the rumors of the Hemmings kids’ paternity.

Even ours sort of forgot to mention that secession began before Lincoln even took office. Virginia seceded after Lincoln was President and blamed his actions for that but wtf was he supposed to do after Fort Sumter was fired on? And as much as they try to portray Lee as noble for staying with his state, Virginia had plenty of unionists including some fine generals and even Stonewall Jackson’s sister.

Whenever the revisionists get going on all about they culchah an’ heyritage, I pull out this quote from Virginia-born Union General George “The Rock of Chickamauga” Thomas:

Efforts made by the defeated insurgents since the close of the war have been to promulgate the idea that the cause of liberty, justice, humanity, equality, and all the calendar of the virtues of freedom, suffered violence and wrong when the effort for southern independence failed. This is, of course, intended as a species of political cant, whereby the crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism.

Poor guy got the stink eye from his family but he was a patriot. Lee was not. Lee didn’t take his oath to the commonwealth of Virginia. I love Virginia too but Virginia was wrong in seceding and he knew that. He chose his state and his personal interests (slavery) over his nation’s and morality. Southern propaganda really is why Lee is not properly understood today. It doesn’t change that he definitely had some skill as a general but he benefited too from poor generalmanship from his counterparts. Until the Richmond campaign, I’d argue the best counterpart he faced in the Eastern Theater was Meade. McCllelan was way too cautious and Hooker, McDowell, and Burnside were not commanders of entire armies which is why Chancellorsville, Bull Run, and Fredericksburg were disasters. That also helped the Jackson legend too. IMO the CSA general that doesn’t get the respect he deserves is Longstreet. They still taught his defensive techniques at West Point well into the 40’s but Longstreet was hated by the Southern friendly writers because he became a Republican, Catholic, criticized Lee in his memoirs, and took a job in the Grant administration.

Another reason why I’ll post in Twitter about the Confederacy and their revisionist progeny that they launched an insurrection and secession from the Union to protect their right to own slaves and the institution of slavery.

It should be referred to as the War of Southern Insurrection or War (as far too many in the South consider it the War of Northern Aggression - which itself is a lie as the first shots were fired by the South against the Union at Fort Sumter).

Statues and monuments should be taken down. We don’t give awards for second place losers of a war whose antagonists started to protect the right to own slaves. We don’t fly their flag as a badge of honor. It’s one of shameful history and one that needs to be treated accordingly.

And you know what, as much as I see Republicans like to pant themselves on the back for not being the party of slavery and secession, the post war Republican presidents outside of Grant really dropped the ball in protecting the African-Americans that stayed in the South and that was the vast majority of the population until the Great Migration began. The Republican Party after Reconstruction had presidents uninterested in doing much on the inhumane way African-Americans were treated in the South.

I think about it. I think the North really just wanted to move on. And I get why that happens after a long, bloody war but whereas you had friendly reunions at Gettysburg well into the early 20th century between white CSA and Union vets, the surviving black Union vets had to worry about offending the local Southern governments, the Klan, or really any white person with power in the South. That’s what makes the takes defending Emmett Till’s lynching so absurd. He was a child. Even if that whistling story was true which we now know it is not, the fact that it was used to murder a child. And you know what, we still see relics of that today when people try to justfiy the Treyvon Martin murder because of Treyvon either having smoked pot or gotten in trouble at school, all things that happen with children of all racial backgrounds at that age but go out of their way to talk about the white kid credibly accused of rape of “Being a good kid aside from that” as if rape isn’t a horrible crime not deserving of punishment by the law.

What we’ve really discovered in the past 48 hours is that, despite the constant refrain for much of the past three years, Trump never wanted to be impeached and doing so was not “playing into his hands.” What he wanted was to be “acquitted,” particularly for the Russia investigation, because then he could run in 2020 on the lie that he was the “victim” of a partisan conspiracy that had failed to remove him in a “coup.” And it’s driving him nuts that the woman he once believed would never impeach him is now standing in the way of that “acquittal.”

I don’t imagine that life is very good for Sen. Yertle right now, with Donny screaming in one ear and his wife screaming in the other about scrutiny finally falling upon her obvious influence peddling.

That’s the best take on the movement I’ve seen. It’s an easy enough basic philosophy to get. But the smugness especially on the economic matters because a lot of em fancy themselves enlightened because they can cite Hayek in discussion when they’re really no more smarter than the average person in economic matters. They’re really in a way like doctrinaire Marxists. Legalize and privatize everything. They get why police brutality is a problem but they thumb their noses at those who think privatized prisons are shady af. Always mistrusting of any government but willing to let business misdeeds go unpunished.

It’s not just legalize and privatize, it’s legalize, privatize, and don’t regulate. Which misses the whole idea of ordered liberty that Hamilton talked about. They see government as “tyranny vs liberty” and don’t recognize that the opposite of tyranny isn’t liberty but license (or anarchy, whichever term you’d prefer). One of these days, I’m going to write a political philosophy book called ‘the balance of liberty”.

It gave the wealthy a lot more money for their offshore accounts (5% of which will be recycled into donations for Republican senators.) It gave publicly traded companies a bunch of money they used for stock buy-backs, raising their share price (which is often the criteria by which senior management bonuses are calculated), and again 5% will be recycled back into donations to Republican senators.

Yes - if they did voiceovers, instead of “live action” it would eliminate much of the visual mess that it makes, but the story remains awful/nonexistent as it was in the Broadway show.

I wouldn’t care how bad the story is, if they’d had costumes I liked.

1. So your contention is that the screening process is sufficient to remove racists, but porous enough to allow individuals who would engage in juvenile punching games on national television through.

2. Many elite universities also require straight As, heavy/exemplary extra curricular activities and solid recommendations. Am I to assume that means any graduate of these institutions is also free of racism?

3. Something around half of our US Senators are racist crackers. Their endorsement means little.

I had a lot of exposure to them since GMU’s economics program is famous for them and I worked with a couple economics majors on the newspaper together. Nice enough people but really just so absolutist on economics. Most of the left wingers I knew in college were more pragmatic. There were a few die hard leftists but most of the libertarians I met were dyed in the wool about things like ACA being awful awful legislation. Plus from what I learned from one of the few left of center people in the economics majors, they weren’t really given too much head room for free thought on academic papers. I never had that problem in the history department. That’s why I get amused at brobertarians who act like they’re the guardians of free speech. I’ve seen how libertarian institutions deal with dissenting thoughts. They’re not authortarian but dismissive and have I think unfortunately a bit of an oligarchical world view. Where wealth determines a person’s selfworth.

To me, the biggest difference between W and Trump is W knew he wasn’t the brightest bulb in the box and embraced the idea of Rove being “Bush’s Brain.” Trump is an intellectually incurious narcissist who thinks he knows every thing there is worth knowing.

That is a key difference. Hell I think what bugged me was he was too aware of it sometimes. I remember one time he told the C students of the world they too could be President and it annoyed me given his pedigree. I don’t remember W ever being outright malicious to his opponents but he just had a cluelnessness that often annoyed me. Iraq on the heels of Afghanistan is another example. And he definitely had no problem smearing the critics of the Iraq War through his allies including a lot of the now Trump right wingers who insist they’re against “intervention” which of course bothered me too.

One possibility: ignorant of the news about white supremacists, which would be a major flaw for a potential future officer.
Second possibility: perfectly aware and engaged in a white supremacist troll, which should be disqualifying for future leadership roles.

third possibility: they’re a bunch of 18 year olds who don’t know white supremacist memes because that is something that has just never occurred to any of them. And yes, 18 year olds are remarkably oblivious of current events—even ones who come out of really good prep schools and wind up in my classes. They don’t watch news. They don’t read news. My students look at me blankly when I mention television that was on 10 years ago. They were 8 years old at that time. They don’t know what The Wire is. They’ve never seen the Sopranos. The vast majority have no idea who Elton John is, or an ability to name the presidents in order after, say, Franklin Roosevelt.

And it worked. And you know what, I could probably be civil to Bush if I ever met him. Michele dealt with a lot of ugliness from the right wing media but the Bushes to their credit were cordial to the Obamas from the start. That’s what I think people need to consider when they get upset at Michelle for declaring W her friend. The Obamas took a lot of shit from a lot of people for not doing the “right” thing but Laura and Dubya didn’t engage in that. Obviously I know Dubya disagreed with Obama’s policies but I never got the impression that he thought less of Obama as a person the way Romney did and certainly Trump does.

Their endorsement means little.

re: #215 Targetpractice

I truly hate to say it, but I think your “acquitted” scenario (or, as our Moron-in-Chief is likely to put it, COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY ACQUITTED!!!1!!!!11!!!) is still likely to be the Administration’s go-to talking-point for dealing with the whole impeachment mess, and that loud, repeated protestations of (COMPLETE INNOCENCE!!!), and blaming his political enemies (RADICAL LEFT-WING COMMIE ATHEIST TRAITORS!!!!!) for his (UNPRECEDENTED ILLEGAL HARASSMENT!!! and UNCONSTITUTIONAL COUP!!!!! ) is going to be the standard Trump/GOP “strategy” i.e. media blitz - from here on.

“The recently released emails show Stephen Miller trafficking the views of white supremacist hate groups that espouse a repugnant and extreme anti-immigrant agenda,” said the letter’s co-leads Schneider and Wasserman Schultz. “These hateful views have no place in our government, much less just steps from the Oval Office. 3. Okay, giving up now. Not worth my time.

Sorry about that. I’m in a sort of snarky and cynical mood, so you got a significantly more sarcasm and snark than merited in my response. Short, more reasonable summary.

1. I don’t think that West Point is riddled with racists, but I think it’s a bit naive at this point to assume that any institution is going to be so thorough as to keep a few from slipping in through the cracks here and there. It’s also a bit unfair to hold them to that high of a standard, especially as it’s known that the military and law enforcement are targets for infiltration. The institutions aren’t going to be perfect in screening. What they do need to do is their best to keep them from entering and kick them out as soon as they reveal themselves.
2. I actually buy that this might have actually been a bunch of juvenile BS and 3 not West Point Cadets maliciously or ironically throwing white power signs. There’s also a fair point it was 3 West Point cadets throwing white power signs and West Point’s more than happy to push accept this excuse, not because they’re into tolerating racism, but rather because they’re engaged in a bit of institutional ass covering.

I’m sure the GOP in that district are quite happy being told that a turn-coat Democratic Party official is their best bet for winning an election in that district.

Christians have always argued over “who is really a Christian”. It’s a feature, not a bug.

Another feature Christianity picked up from Judaism…

Three Jews, four opinions” is still a pretty reliable benchmark: toss in the “who is really a Jew” question, and it goes up to five or six.

I would think the Dems have a good shot at keeping this district. His district can’t be all that red if he didn’t think he could explain a no to impeachment. I assume that the Republican will be pro-Trump and not the squishy middle. Full disclosure, I don’t know anything about Van Drew’s district. This is all speculation based on the fact that he won the last election in that district.

An Iowa woman is charged with attempted murder after telling authorities that she drove over a teenage girl because she was Hispanic, police say

I’m trying to imagine what Christmas is going to be like for her family. I bet they consider themselves to be good Xians and patriots, and maybe think that the woman was justified in killing a kid. Damn them.

I only have sympathy for the poor family of the child. What horror they must be going through.

To all you old farts out there. There’s a “I Love Lucy” Christmas Special on CBS.
I highly recommend it.

And the Star Wars Movie was an entertaining Star Wars Movie.
Really nothing more.

Probably some rules regarding the recording or steno of what was said in meetings. Much easier in a hotel room to arrange for a recorder to be turned off, person told to stop taking notes or simply being sent out of the room.

I’m hoping that she can keep that discipline during the State of the Union speech. I want to see the Democrats stone silent and attentive, while the Republican side whoops and hollers at every insult and lie that Trump shovels out.

But Jews arguing with other Jews about who’s really a Jew… don’t bring swords to the discussion. That’s a Christian innovation.

Atlantic City HATES Donald Trump. With good reason. They may be right of center as a general rule, but they’re very very anti-Trump.
