Dec. 18, 2019 | Felix Contreras — When Los Lobos gathered behind the Tiny Desk, it felt like they were cramped in the back room of a family Christmas party. “The only thing missing today are the tamales!,” I told my office mates while introducing the band, a reference to a Mexican-American Christmas meal staple. The vibe in the room was definitely familia, with the presence of many long-time fans as well as folks who came for the holiday cheer, Lobos style.

The band called up tunes from the Latin Holiday song book, straight from their recently released, first-ever Christmas album, Llegó Navidad, a bilingual collection of songs from across Latin America and the U.S.

They kicked it off with an obscure novelty hit that was once popular in Latino households in the southwest, “¿Dónde Está Santa Claus?.” It was originally a lushly orchestrated affair that is now a “lowrider oldie.”

The new album’s title cut, “Llegó Navidad,” is actually a classic from the Fania Records catalog originally performed by the Puerto Rican composer and singer Ismael Rivera. Los Lobos retains its pan Latin callout to holiday celebrations across Latin America, set to a slow burning montuno groove.

The band adds a David Hidalgo and Louie Perez original to the Latin holiday songbook with “Christmas and You,” a plaintive ballad about desperate loss that we would easily call a carte vena (vein cutter). The great Mexican essayist Alma Guillermoprieto once wrote that it’s not a real Mexican party “until someone cries” and this song does the trick.

The party ends by sending everyone home, dancing with “It’s Christmas Time In Texas,” a song by the great Tex- Mex troubadour, Freddy Fender. It’s a Los Lobos scorcher, complete with accordion and good times that would get even abuelita dancing.

“It’s Christmas Time in Texas”

This seems to be Nancy’s Kaspersky move: if Trump brings no witnesses, we all know he is hiding something, if he does bring witnesses, it will be endless contradictions and perjury city.

The simple reality is that, in the eyes of evangelicals, you can never be religious and liberal. It’s not simply a matter of differing opinions, they literally cannot accept the idea that a person can have religious values and liberal values simultaneously. And it’s not an à la carte situation, you have to believe the most whacked out and deeply conservative version of their religion’s beliefs…or you’re really a heathen who’s gonna burn for eternity.

It’s not just evangelicals. Lots of mainline Xtians, Catholics, Mormons and sadly a chunk of every other religious group as well…

A Palm Beach County trailer park could be the site of a future Donald J. Trump presidential library. That’s the vision of James Arena, a real estate broker and resident of Briny Breezes, the 43-acre coastal town just south of Boynton Beach that’s made up entirely of a mobile home park

I know the place

Sounds to me like the residents arent being booted
They’re trying to finagle a huge payday by selling out

Following up on the tail end of the last thread, I’m confident Matrix 4 and John Wick 4 will NOT be opening on the same day.

There’s no way the studios would deliberately split an audience like that as it hurts both movies. Better to open them two weeks to a month apart to maximize revenue from each.

That said, seeing both on the same opening day would be a hell of a lot of fun.

I really don’t think so. Roberts wants to look legit. The above scenario does not accomplish this. They need a trial and once you start a trial it’s like opening a can of worms. The senate my vote to acquit, but more info is going to come out and most of it makes trump look bad.

He may be a hack but he also has a desire to look respectable — otherwise he would have voted with the Scalia 4 to ban the ACA. He is concerned about how history will judge him and though he has voted for abominations (e.g. Citizens United, undermining the VRA), I think this may be a bridge too far for him.

They will not be able to defend an obviously sham trial.
Yes they will try. And likely get pilloried.
If he did nothing wrong then why not defend himself (this is not that the defence doesn’t have to prove innocence. its the president. Of the u.s. refusing to prove what he is comfortable saying out loud every single day)

They need at least the appearance of legitimacy before they acquit

I asked him how he ever trusted Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, two Russian associates with a business called Fraud Guarantee who were arrested by the FBI in October. “They look like Miami people. I know a lot of Miami people that look like that that are perfectly legitimate and act like them,” Giuliani said. “Neither one of them have ever been convicted of a crime. Neither one. And generally that’s my cutoff point, because if you do it based on allegations and claims and — you’re not gonna work with anybody,” he said, laughing. “Particularly in business.”

I’ve never made this one before, so there are many opportunities to screw it up, not the least of which is that it has to be gluten free. Fortunately, it’s supposed to chill for a day in the fridge before serving, so if it’s an utter disaster, I have time for a simpler one before dinner tomorrow evening. Also, family and close friends, so everyone will be very forgiving and all but that utter disaster will be serve-able.

Fundamentalism is the true scourge of our time. We probably shouldn’t be surprised by the reactionary response to the advancements of the early 21st century, but here we are… fighting a rearguard action against those who would love nothing more than to throw the world into a new dark age - before turning their war to those fundamentalists who disagree with their own warped view.

Here’s a fun scenario… Roberts does some chicanery in the Senate trial that eventually shows he covered up some bad evidence against Trump. He gets impeached by a Democratically controlled House, the Senate now must consider his role in the trial, or he does what many judges do when impeached: he resigns (maybe he figures there are enough Republicans in the Senate to save him, but his place in history is now shit). If that’s in 2021, hopefully it means that a Democratic president gets to appoint his replacement.

IT’S NOT CLEAR why DOJ keeps suggesting the House is precluded from seeking additional articles of impeachment just because it already voted out two.

This is the Trump?Barr DoJ: they don’t have to be “clear” - they don’t HAVE to explain anything. As long as it makes a good sound-bite for the Orange Anus and his cult, it just has be put out there.

They’re trying to substitute a political calculation for a legal one. They think that because politically the thinking goes you only get one bite at the applepeach, that legally the House doesn’t get to do more. Which is, constitutionally speaking, utter and complete bullshit. There’s nothing to stop the House from sending articles of impeachment to the Senate in waves - other than politics. But if the House Judiciary committee decided that they wanted to mark up articles for say, nepotism or graft/corruption or obstruction of justice based on the Mueller report or whatever other articles they saw fit, they could absolutely do that.

Interestingly, only one person in an impeachment trial faced more than 2 articles of impeachment… In 2009 Judge Samuel Kent was impeached on charges of sexual assault, obstructing and impeding an official proceeding, and making false and misleading statements. He resigned a week after his Senate trial started.

Also, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglass was the subject of two impeachment investigations, first in 1953 then again in 1970. Neither made it past the judiciary committee.

There are two homes that fit this description on my 10-minute drive to work. I’ve seen a couple more in the countryside on the way to my kid’s school. They’re literally flying Trump 2020 flags. One of them put the flagpole up just last year while his home could use a few repairs and a new coat of paint.

Or the second-worst: the South American Bullet Ant (so-named because its sting is said to rival being shot for painfulness) is close runner-up.

Though nightmarish, that photo of the wasp and spider seems just normal for the run of life-forms in Australia : If it’s likely to be oversized, over-ugly, and/or highly venomous (or all three), it’s probably from Down Under.

I’m old enough to remember Trump saying that his impeachment would tank the stock market, followed by him claiming that he doesn’t follow the stock market.

fyi, that means I’m older than 2 months old.

An interesting vignette about my step-father. He was inducted into the Renaissance Festival Hall-of-Fame in 2011 for his contributions to the King Richard’s Faire.

(My mother and step-father first met at the Texas Renaissance Faire when they both performed there.)

The groups listed in his bio were founded by him and my mother. They released several long-playing, short-selling albums (that is a family tradition, though I beat them to it by several years).

They’re addicted to power and are on a bender. They aren’t thinking about anything other than winning and imposing their religious dominion over society entirely. It’s not just about trying to just secure the gains they’ve made, they want nothing less than eradication of all secular government, modern reproductive freedom and civil rights laws.

Gonna be a hell of a withdrawl. It’s hard to imagine the hate engine getting completely refueled in their tanks with the candidates we have but they’ll try.
