Clinton is 1,000 lifetimes ago in politics.

On a totally unrelated topic, I wonder why there are no rumors about Trump f*cking around on Melania while he is POTUS? Trump does have a history of keeping the rumor mags in his pocket but I would have thought that even the “fake news” would have said something?

Probably even longer since even many of the younger evangelical leaders have surrendered their souls for power. OTOH, that is a good thing; it is better for the real teachings to have these fools discredit their fundamental hate and treason disguised as Christianity so that maybe those few actually living it can perhaps reform it. God knows the church is even worse now than in 1517.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the group of prosecutors that Rudy is calling “assholes” the same SDNY that pretty much functioned a Trump campaign office? The same group of people that Comey was so worried about interfering in the election for Trump, he went did it for them for some sort of idiotic reason?

I’m starting to have a hard time following this. If SDNY was basically acting as Trump’s cheerleaders, aren’t they on the same side?

This may have been posted earlier, I did not check.

I would note that the Boston Globe’s Spotlight reports on child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is almost old enough to vote (came out in February 2002). This #%^&@! is STILL going on.

For months, civil authorities and Catholic parishioners have sought access to a secret church report about Michael J. Bransfield, the West Virginia bishop ousted for alleged sexual and financial misconduct. Law enforcement authorities in two jurisdictions contend that it could aid investigations they have launched, and parishioners have said it could help them understand how Bransfield’s behavior went unchecked for so long.

But so far, the report has remained out of their reach.

The Washington Post obtained a copy of the document in June and has drawn on it and other records for a series of stories about the role of cash gifts among senior clerics in the church’s ongoing sex abuse crisis.

The 60-page report is brimming with investigative findings about how Bransfield allegedly groomed and inappropriately touched young men and spent millions of dollars in church money on himself and on fellow clerics.

After church officials repeatedly declined to say whether they were going to release the report, The Post has decided to publish it on its website for the first time with some details redacted to protect the identities of alleged victims of sexual improprieties. The Post is doing so in response to significant interest from the public.

I didn’t think Don the elder was going to be a thing either. When he disparaged McCain in 2015, I was sure that would be it. But Trump is an unprincipled infighter who knows how to strike at an opponent’s weakness (real or imagined) through lies and deception.

Trump has succeeded in Hillarying Biden and brought down his numbers — the charges against Hunter are bogus, but most people will react as though this is Trump level corruption — a son getting a position because of his father and not because of personal merits. It wasn’t illegal but still — you know that Hunter would not have gotten the placement if he didn’t have a connected parent. Every single possible Democratic candidate will face a barrage of hostile reporting that will damage them.

Not a single Republican Senator has shown any fortitude to date. Let’s see if somehow Nancy can deal a fatal blow to Trump and Trumpism.

If I just open a video *not* on a channel to which I subscribed, there are the usual autoplay controls.

How frustrating.

My sister says planning is underway for his funeral from the local Renaissance Faire community, Morris dancing community, and bagpiper community, to help out my mother. One request he made was that “The Parting Glass” be played for such a service (hence the pipers and singers).

He is also eligible for military honours for his Air Force service.

“Supposebly.” That one kills me.

recent discussion about this online somewhere: “supposably” is an actual word, though it’s not easy to use correctly (something to do with it having a different sense of the reality of the conjecture, as opposed to “supposedly,” with one indicating that something is capable of supposition, while the other infers question as to something having occurred).

I hate this! I know some Syrian people, and they are such fine people! They do not deserve, no one deserves, to be bombed into the stone age. And that is what is happening.

It’s fine. AT some point, a Democrat will become president again, and when that happens, this country is going to throw open its arms to roughly 3 million Syrians and 15 million or so folks from South of the border. And if there is justice in this world, there will be a program that will help to resettle them in those barren states that could use 20 million or so folks that owe their citizenship to Democrats.

Supposably is something which can be conceived or imagined.

For example, I can conceive of a nation with universal health care; it is supposably achievable with the political will to implement it.

That was the NY FBI that wads Rudy’s boys. The SDNY was Preet Bharara’s old stomping grounds

True. The NY FBI office has been suspected of feeding Giuliani inside info. They were notoriously anti-Clinton. I suspect they sat on Weiner’s laptop for a bit then dropped it at the right time for maximum effect leading to the infamous Comey letter. That will probably take some sleuthing to flesh out and confirm.

What’s weird is the whole True Pundit deal seems to have fed into that witches brew of ratfuckery: he is rabidly anti-Clinton but is also anti-FBI. Originally he played as an FBI ‘insider’ to dish on Clinton and may have helped influence Comey. He may have unwittingly exacted revenge on the FBI well beyond his wildest dreams… even though the NY field office of the FBI is not ‘the FBI.’

I posted on Pauly Walnuts and Big Baby’s $391m Ukranian Impeachment about 18 hours ago. It seems like a pretty big story that is lost in the background noise of so many other big stories. ICYMI:

Manafort (PM) mobbed up in Ukraine and Russia, in deep debt to Oleg Deripaska (OD)

PM gets into Trump campaign, figures he can get right with OD by cooking up some big deals being close to power, the classic recipe for grift

2016 RNC Platform at GOP Convention: language supporting Ukraine changes from providing ‘lethal assistance’ to ‘appropriate assistance’

Besides trying to get Trump/Russian meetings going PM keeps feeding polling data to OD right up until Trump’s victory

PM continually pushes Russian friendly Peace Deal for Ukraine to Trump Team before and after he’s publicly sacked: he never left the campaign or admin until Mueller cuffed him

Peace Deal includes: Russia keeps Crimea, Ukraine keeps the rest, except for Donbas: that becomes new state, run by democratically install-elected (cough) Victor, PM’s old bestie client Yanukovych!

Crimea is almost all Russian speakers, Donbas is largely Russian speakers, unlike the rest of the Ukraine. This is probably why Putin will ‘settle’ for Donbas and Crimea for now.

Years later, $391m aid package approved with Javelin missiles, Trump gets impeached over it for being Trump

The catch: the missiles cannot be used in Donbas. They have to be stored hundreds of miles away from Donbas. They are stipulated to not be used in that theater.

Trump originally did not want any Javelins going to Ukraine but had to be convinced over the economic impact of the arms sales as good for business

Manafort was pushing the Russian concoted Ukraine ‘Peace’ deal to Trump early and often: President Trump has had meetings with Putin that are not documented or transcribed

This seems swampy as fuck. It’s beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump should be a registered FARA agent.

There is nothing I’d like more than for the whole NY FBI office/Giuliani/Weiner laptop/Comey situation to be thoroughly investigated. It stank like ratfuckery at the time and it still does. I think the Comey letter was probably 1-2% of the PV: that 1-2% in the battleground states could have given Clinton those states.

Republicans: Always cool-headed and rational people.

An Iowa state representative is standing by inflammatory comments he made online suggesting that a supporter of required vaccines is a “pharma fascist.”

Rep. Jeff Shipley, R-Fairfield, replied to one of California state Sen. Richard Pan’s tweets about vaccinations Saturday and continued to tweet about the subject Sunday. Shipley first called Pan “a medical rapist” before apologizing for the term and saying that “pharma fascist” or “corporate vaccine whore” would have been more appropriate terms.

She told him she can’t handle more than one death in a day, and if he dies on her today she’ll never speak to him again. (That drew a laugh from him.)

Current Christmas Day Playlist the Wife Unit and I are arguing over. We have 30 hours to figure this out or Christmas is ruined.

1. Elf
2. A Christmas Story
3. Bourdain’s Parts Unknown: Manila
4. Die Hard

I’m cool with Elf leading off but we are locked in stalemate on the best #2.

Parts Unknown: Manila is extra special as it’s connects me to my wife’s family, and it’s also shot during Christmas which is pretty much the entire month of December in the Philipines.

Mom 2 always went to the Philipines every year to visit with fam and I always wondered why she would pack up cardboard boxes full of treats and knick knacks to bring, tiny little Philipino woman with a large suitcase and two heavy ass cardboard boxes. Of course she’d bring a box back of Philipino treats. My dumb ass thought ‘Why not buy that shit when you’re there?’

It wasn’t until I watched Parts Unknown:Manila till I understood the meaning of the balikbayan box.

Dammit Bourdain, I miss you ya bastardo.

Happy not-quite-Christmas from a chilly western New York State.

Travel here yesterday from Pennsylvania was a bit more adventurous than I wanted.

My car is a bit of a runner. 2005 Subaru with a few issues for which repair cost is greater than the book value of the vehicle. And so I was driving between Philadelphia and western New York.

About 80 miles from home and in a relatively rural area of Pennsylvania I am at a stop light and notice that smoke is issuing from the hood of my car along with a definite burning smell. So I pull off into a Wawa to see what is the matter.

Just something smoldering*. But still unsure exactly what in the car has now given up the ghost and let out the magic smoke. And I’m 1.5 hours from home and 3.5 hours from my brother. So I limp the car about 15 miles to the closest Subaru dealership.

And then spend about 2.5 hours buying a new car. Which given that I wasn’t carrying the title, a checkbook, etc. went better than I expected. Not an expense I was quite ready to pick up, but I hit a sort of “screw it” mentality and decided to just get the issue out of the way now instead of messing with old car, getting rental or something to get past the holiday, etc.

* - To the best of my knowledge and someone looking at it the smoldering part was a bearing in the fan/AC seizing up and self-destructing. Which would have been another expensive repair to toss on the pile.

Subaru Impreza. Back to compacts and having a trunk.

Getting used to how “chirpy” the car is since it has one of those sensor systems that detects cars ahead of you and warns if you wander into the edge of your lane, etc.

Bummer about your car. Hope you’re happy with the new one!

Though it is strange: “It started smoking, so I took it to the shop and ended up buying a new one rather than fix the old one” is a story one usually hears about cellphones, or microwave ovens, rather than automobiles. Oh well….

Drive safely!

ADD: if the hazard-detection “chirping” gets annoying (though it can be very useful at times), you might want to check the manual to see if the audio signals can be disabled. My car had the same issue, and since driving in Manhattan is, at most times, a hazard-in-your-spaces game anyway, it was good (if borderline dangerous) to be able to shut it off.

Yeah, that would take some getting used to - but the blind spot monitors are awesome - I’ve avoided accidents that way - but when I switch to other car, I forget that I don’t have that helping me.

I also adjusted the sensitivity on some of the warning chirps since I do so much driving in NYC metro - just because there’s so much traffic, having it constantly warn would be tiresome.

Well, zero down and a finance plan can get you past the no available money right then issue. And replacing the old car was in the near future and I do have sufficient savings to handle the cost luckily. (Which I do know would put a lot of other people in the lurch.)

And a bit more than I planned on spending since I was going to luck for a used car to replace the old one. But this was adapting to circumstances and not wanting to get stuck in the middle of nowhere right before Christmas. Or a lot of shuttling about to deal with a rental and a nearly dead vehicle not worth sinking repair costs into.

I read a pretty good article written by a guy that does aircraft safety systems. Long story short many carmakers are doing this wrong. One example is the transition you mention in a less equipped car. Safety system habituation. The gear is good, sensors and all. But the pesky human reaction thing. Pilots are highly trained as civilians. Insert military flight training, then a career flying for Delta. Even that guy needs a landing gear-shaped landing gear control.

A stroll down memory lane.

The Night Before Christmas 1973

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the land
There were mittens and gloves on each cold little hand.
The stockings that year were on feet to keep warm
All chimney flues closed against oncoming storm.
The Lincolns and Caddies and Chryslers alas,
Lay idle all over—they’d run out of gas.

Our thermostat set at a cool 65—
Our unlit Christmas tree kept our spirits alive…
But to keep our minds off having no food to eat
We were burning the branches for some extra heat.
When on our TV there arose quite a din
Out rang “Here’s Comes the Chief” and St. Dickie walked in.

“I have something to say” he said, smiling quite broadly
(As cold as it was—still his lip sweated oddly.)
“I must make this short to conserve on all power,
So I’ll limit my talk to a very quick hour.
“It’s HEALTHY to walk and it’s HEALTHY to freeze—
My doctor informed me” (He said with a sneeze.)

“We must simply not panic; we must keep our head.
You won’t be cold next week-you’ll be hungry instead.
“I gave wheat to the Russians” the president said.
“So you dieters can smile as we’ve none left for bread.
“Please be happy today. I know of whence I speak.
‘Cause the REALLY bad news won’t be out till next week!”

With a cock of his head and a wink of his eye,
He turned to his gas deer saying, “Come on, let’s fly!”
“Come Shell, Mobil, Exxon, I need gas aplenty
To fly me from Washington to San Clemente.”
But man that he was as he boarded his flight
He cried, “MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND GOOD NIGHT.”

And as cold as we were and quite hungry as well
We kicked in the tube and said, “JUST GO TO HELL.”

Addendum:
But of course:

Multi-level marketing: Monavie and Jeunesse
Howard-Browne and his wife Adonica were top-ranking (“Black Diamond executive level”) distributors for Monavie, a multi-level marketing company that sold acai berry juice-based beverages until folding in 2014 subsequent to a $182 million loan default and allegations of pyramid scheming, fraudulent advertising, and patent infringement. As of 2016, Howard-Browne also served as a “North America Emerald Director” for the multi-level marketing company Jeunesse.

He also believes that cannibalism and human sacrifice have been common in Hollywood and Washington DC for years. He has been a guest on Info-Wars and in Trump’s White House.

The Parts Unknown Manila episode is good, gets you right in the feels at the end.

Not big on Elf, but one can’t go wrong with either Die Hard (it is a Christmas movie, damnit!) or A Christmas Story. I’d throw in Scrooged, though; of all of the “A Christmas Carol” film adaptations, it’s easily the best, with a Grade A ensemble cast anchored by Bill Murray and a still modern-ish sensibility.

The Pie Overlord!  Dec 24, 2019 • 8:59:06am

I have a Christmas story. It’s kind of mean but also very funny.

Years ago, a neighbor from down the street came knocking on my door and she was seething mad.

ONE OF YOUR KIDS TOLD MY TOMMY THAT THERE IS NO SANTA AND NOW HIS CHRISTMAS IS RUINED!!!! YOUR KIDS HAVE TO APOLOGIZE TO TOMMY RIGHT NOW!!!1!!1!!

I stood there in utter shock and then I started to laugh and I couldn’t stop.

ITS NOT FUNNY!!! YOU TELL TOMMY THAT THERE’S A SANTA OR I’LL… I’LL…

“Call the police” I suggested before shutting the door.

Then I turned to my kids and said “Which one of you told Tommy there is no Santa?”

“I did!” admitted my daughter. “Everybody knows the grandparents buy the presents!”

Interesting article on how Joe Biden’s stuttering, how it affected and affects him, and how it affects how he is viewed. Including how stuttering compensation techniques may be misinterpreted by the non-stuttering general public.

And, yes, the article is sympathetic and humanizing. Something that, sadly, seems to be increasingly rare these days.

With regards to the impeachment trial in the Senate, someone needs to whisper in Trump’s ear every so often that people won’t believe he’s totally exonerated unless he produces witnesses and documents in the trial to show how perfect everything was. That he needs a real trial and should demand that of McConnell.

Newly revealed emails show why Trump should fear a real Senate trial
Paul Waldman, WaPo

These new emails will make it even more difficult for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to justify staging the kind of Senate trial he and the White House would obviously prefer: one as brief as possible, with no witnesses. And while the president himself might like to create an absurdist spectacle by forcing Joe Biden or his son to testify, Trump doesn’t have a single witness he could call whose testimony would support the idea of his innocence.
That’s Trump’s problem, which is now McConnell’s problem, in a nutshell. If there are going to be any witnesses at all, they would have to include at a minimum Duffey, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton, all of whom have refused to testify before the House. And who would the witnesses for Trump’s defense be? They’ve got nothing.

And who would the witnesses for Trump’s defense be?

Because he believes he is his best advocate, Trump will demand to testify in his own defense at the Senate trial.

Actually, that might be the best way to goad them into having witnesses… convince Trump that he should testify in his own defense, prey on his ego and insistence of being the center of attention.

re: #208 KGxvi

He always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and knows more about everything than anyone else. We see this in every thing he spews - whether it’s the nonsensical ravings about wind power, or light bulbs, or coal and manufacturing.

He’s got such a fragile ego that it’s easy to goad him into doing what you want him to do, because he can’t help himself either.

So, the ongoing impeachment continues to eat away at whatever is bouncing around between his ears and he can’t stand that he’s not the one in control of the process.

That adds pressure to McConnell, who is his last line of defense here.

Trump will likely demand the ability to testify, even though everyone in the legal community knows that this would be disastrous for Trump. Doesn’t matter what side of the aisle you’re on, you know that Trump would implicate himself in not only the crimes directly before us, but admit to still other crimes under oath as a boast of what he can do, what he will do, and has already done. Allowing anyone else to testify would eliminate the second charge (obstruction of Congress) but open him up to still more criminal charges and jeopardy.

Pelosi’s living rent free in Trump’s head, and she knows it. She knows that impeachment is eating away at Trump, and there’s nothing he can do about it short of resignation. His ego wont allow resignation to even enter the discussion, but it should be what McConnell and others are telling him.

The GOP chances in 2020 depend on it, and the longer impeachment runs, the lower the GOP odds of holding on to the power they have declines (or it should).

Man, this story keeps getting worse.

Twice within an hour on the afternoon of Dec. 9, police say a Des Moines woman intentionally struck young pedestrians with her SUV: a 12-year-old boy in Des Moines and a 14-year-old girl in Clive.

Authorities say the woman, Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, last week admitted she targeted the teenage girl because she was Latino. Police said she had made no admissions as of Monday about her alleged role or motive in the hit-and-run of the boy, who is black.

She was charged with attempted murder in the Clive case on Friday, and a separate charge of attempted murder in the Des Moines case on Monday.

Franklin is also charged in a disturbance that occurred at a West Des Moines Conoco convenience store about an hour after the girl was hit. She faces a hate crime charge in that case, which also includes charges of assault, operating under the influence, theft and public intoxication, court records show.

I just got back from doing some last minute shopping. The State Wine and Liquor store, which will close at 6PM and will be closed tomorrow, was madness. I’m betting the parking lot will be like demolition derby around 5:45 or so. I got a bottle of red and of white for under $20 for tomorrow’s dinner.

Just after that my wife came home. She works elder care. The son of one of her clients gave her a bottle of white and red from a winery called Cakebread Cellars. Looked it up and they’re over $70 apiece. You don’t want to get used to that kind of thing, but it was a nice gift of appreciation. My wife bought presents for all of her clients, too (one of whom she was to care for tomorrow morning died today).

That’s OK, I just came from my neighborhood Kroger, where their network is apparently down and they can’t take any debit/credit cards; fortunately, I had cash, but it still took me 15-20 minutes of standing in line to check out a box of dog food. There’s a whole bunch of people in those lines that are trying to get last-minute stuff before the store closes at 6 PM getting pissed off right now…

Newly revealed emails show why Trump should fear a real Senate trial
Paul Waldman, WaPo

This is totally the fault of the man’s ego. Had he been willing to accept the initial defense strategy of the Repubs, which was to spin his call as “wrong, but not impeachable,” he might have been able to put Mulvaney or Duffey up there to say that they’d conducted the hold with “good intentions” but had belatedly realized they’d fucked up.

But no, he insisted upon his call being seen as “perfect” and absolutely refused to accept even the slightest shred of responsibility for his wrong-doing, so there’s absolutely no way he can allow a single “fact witness” take the stand because the moment they admit that they knew what they were doing was going against Congressional intent, they’re well and truly fucked in the eyes of the public. Yeah, Yertle will still probably pistol-whip his caucus into acquittal, but the damage will have been done and it will last well past the final vote.

There’s an interesting aspect to this impeachment trial as well… the vulnerable Republican Senators have to make a choice on two votes. There’s basically four ways it can play out:

1. they vote with Trump/McConnell on the rules and then for acquittal - in which case they’re probably fucked with their non-base voters.
2. they vote with Trump/McConnell on the rules and then to convict - assuming they know they don’t have 67 votes
3. they vote against them on the rules but to acquit - they can argue that they gave a fair trial, but then they have to explain why they ignored evidence in front of their eyes
4. they vote against them on the rules and to convict - again, assuming they know they won’t get to 67 votes.

Each move has problems. 1 and 2 likely screws them with moderates and independents. 3 and 4 screw them with the GOP base. 2 and 3 will be seen as splitting the baby and likely to piss everyone off. 1 is a godsend to a Democratic challenger. 4 is asking for a primary challenge.

I can really only assume at this point that Yertle is privately hopeful that if this stretches past Iowa, then it at least goes until April, when most of the GOP’s primaries will be over and thus the pressure to acquit less immediately apparent. Because if the “trial” happens prior to that, then his caucus is well and truly fucked either way.

I can’t understand why more humans do not get that we’re supposed to be here to look out for each other and help each other over the rough patches. To celebrate the fun and joyful and good and to be there to mourn and grieve the inevitable losses and setbacks. To give when you can and receive when you have the need, and yes, the want as well. We’re not meant to be lonely, alone and excluded, pushed away and hated. We’re meant to have a pack, a place of belonging. And yet humans do their fucking best to ruin that all the time.

This was lovely. And so many turned out to help too! Thanks for sharing!

Trump Doesn’t Know What Pelosi Is Doing to Him
by Martin Longman December 19, 2019, Washington Monthly

An essay on the process, which I understand a bit better now.

from Senate Rules:

I. Whensoever the Senate shall receive notice from the House of Representatives that managers are appointed on their part to conduct an impeachment against any person and are directed to carry articles of impeachment to the Senate, the Secretary of the Senate shall immediately* inform the House of Representatives that the Senate is ready to receive the managers for the purpose of exhibiting such articles of impeachment, agreeably to such notice.

A normal reading of this clause would allow for no delay on the Senate’s part in receiving the House managers. But it also shows that the Senate can’t initiate a trial until the House appoints their managers and sends notice to that effect.

My wife and I have returned from the county seat to refill her medications in advance of a trip to Chicago.

Already every person I ran into offered condolences. (I imagine my message to the village board here flew like wildfire through the county.)

My sister called again. She convinced my eldest first cousin to “not cancel Christmas” and go to Chicago afterward.

My sister points out that a plane ticket one way from LAX to ORD is over a frickin’ thousand dollars.

My sister suggested that my cousin try to convince my mother to move out of Chicago to our home town; our aunt is fine with my mother moving in with her. The trouble is convincing my mother, as she doesn’t want to leave her friends and isn’t big on the idea of living in a town of two hundred.

“I want to be near my friends” seems to be a problem in my family. My sister is currently paying more than $1,000 a month for a 10x13 foot apartment in Burbank and sharing it with another person. She won’t move here (that $1,000 is nearly three times our annual tax bill we just got in the mail today) because “small town.” I’ve already suggested it to my mother and she immediately rejected it.

From the Renaissance Faire community, the Triple Nine Society, and Intertel my E-mail box blew up with condolences.

I’d love to know how much money he made off of those pardons.

Aside from the campaign contributions he got from the families of the people he pardoned?

This seems to be a thing with conservatives when they are voted out for a more liberal governor. They suddenly start pardoning the worst douchecanoes in the prison system to stick it to the Democrat coming in.

See Mike Huckabee for details.

Blech!

I really think it’s cute that anybody still believes Roberts is concerned about anything other than the way he personally looks in the eyes of the public. His entire reasoning behind “saving” the ACA was because he couldn’t get his buddies on the right side of the bench to budge from striking down the law in its entirety, so he went with the “best” option he could in ruling with the minority that the mandate was a “tax” so as to save it and thus the law.

The idea that he’s somehow above being a willing participant in whatever sham of a “trial” Yertle cooks up just really doesn’t pass the sniff test. If the Repub majority can ram through “reasonable” rules and act as though they’re abiding by such, then he’s not going to step in and say that the “trial” is a sham. He’ll go along with it, he’ll sign off on it, and then he’ll tell anybody who asks that he was just there to make sure that the Senate followed the rules.

It sounds like a connection issue for their terminals. As opposed to being declined because your bank is down and the payment network (MC or Visa) is using default settings. I’ll be curious to find out the cause, professional interest, obviously.

The Questions That Will Ultimately Define Who We Are
Can our pluralistic democracy survive an attack by those who view themselves as engaged in a holy war?
by Nancy LeTourneau December 24, 2019, Washington Monthly

… Kathleen Parker wrote that it is a shame that cruelty isn’t an impeachable offense. But I was immediately reminded of the powerful piece from Adam Serwer titled, “The Cruelty Is the Point.”

Trump’s only true skill is the con; his only fundamental belief is that the United States is the birthright of straight, white, Christian men, and his only real, authentic pleasure is in cruelty. It is that cruelty, and the delight it brings them, that binds his most ardent supporters to him, in shared scorn for those they hate and fear: immigrants, black voters, feminists, and treasonous white men who empathize with any of those who would steal their birthright.

…Is there a place for reasoned dialogue and disagreement with those who have chosen to use “any means necessary” to impose their will on everyone else?

My guess is the sheer volume of transactions being processed just overwhelmed a less than ideally designed system.

When the topic of lamb came up I remembered that my mom likes it with mint sauce/jelly. So I googled the topic of why mint with lamb. Some compelling theories: actually a holdover from medieval thinking about combinations of foods under prevailing medical doctrine based on “humours”; they didn’t actually eat lamb, but ate mutton and had to have some thing to cover the strong taste; English law mandated it because it actually tasted horrible with the meat, commoners were getting a taste for lamb and it was cutting into England’s main export market—wool, but they didn’t outlaw the eating of lamb because it was a dish of the elite, but somehow people started to actually like it. All are compelling, but I like the English law theory. Remains inconclusive.

Reagan got away with his tax cuts largely because the increased gov’t spending did enough to keep the economy afloat that people didn’t really question why all the well-paying union jobs were going away and being replaced with minimum wage jobs in industries that treat their employees like shit.

Dubya managed to keep people conned for a few years about his tax cuts because the housing bubble made it believable that the stock market’s post-9/11 recovery was finally “trickling down” to the middle class.

But Trump? His runaway spending is not making much of a dent in an economy where the people who most need well-paying jobs are finding none, while the stock market “recovery” only really helps those who are aging out of the economy anyway. Like Dubya, his tax cuts were totally about helping those who needed the least help (i.e. the rich), but unlike Dubya he has no real “recovery” to call his own.

As I have said on another occasion or two, my husband and I raised Arabian horses, and on several major open houses, I cooked a huge Arabic dinner. Not lamb with meat sauce, but a huge brass tray covered with rice and lamb bits, and lamb tajine, and Syrian vegetables braised and tabbouli and fruits, and baclava with rosewater sugar syrup and pistachios instead of walnuts and honey. For another one, we had a friend buy and raise 6 lambs, and they were boned and covered with a dry rub, then wrapped fat to the inside around a spit and grilled. Now let me tell you, that group darned near ate the whole 6 lambs. I prefer not to think of the lambs, but BOY, was that good. I used to really cook. Now I eat frozen vegetarian meals. Sigh…

I spotted a mistletoe-infested tree about 5 miles or so south of our farm as we were taking Glory to the animal hospital last Friday.
I’ve seen loads of trees in Fayette County (Lexington) Ky that were absolutely filthy with mistletoe, but never saw it anywhere in my country until last week.
Now I’m looking for it everywhere.

I hadn’t heard of this when I lived in Lexington, but I lived on a street which derived its name from a kind of tree that had mostly died; the last couple of trees were the back yard of the house we rented and a neighbors. Over the two years we were there multiple interventions were needed on both.

Reagan got away with it because when he took office, the highest marginal rate was 70%, and inflation and interest rates were both well into double digits. Putting that much more cash into the banks really did bring interest rates down. (also, he really did eliminate a lot of corporate deductions, and he put earned income and dividends/interest income into the same brackets, because income is income.)
