I just want to say happy holidays to all on here and for being awesome and helping me with political discussions and also being a voice of sanity in an insane and ridiculous world gone upside down.

Thank you Charles and thank you everybody

Much love to my friends (and lurkers).

I’m sorry to hear of your family difficulties. It really stinks when Christian family members disown you (and their grandchild) because of your own lack of belief.

I hope your hub is doing okay over his brother’s condition.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it, although if you celebrate it, the odds are good you’re doing it right now.
We had our lovely traditional Xmas Eve dinner last night. After a lot of to-ing and fro-ing about who would be able to make it, everything settled out, almost all the invitees came and we had a lovely evening. The 5 month old granddaughter (who is incredibly sensitive and easily overwhelmed) even behaved herself and let various members of her adoring public hold her.
This afternoon the immediate family goes over to my daughter’s for the gift opening, such as it is. A few items like books or socks and assorted charitable contributions. Tea, some soup later-very relaxed.

Thanks to Charles and to all the Lizard family for the community here.

I wanted to thank our host, Charles and any help he may have running this wonderful place. It’s pretty rare at this point to find an online community that’s not full of shit, and this place is totally the opposite of most online community experiences. I sometimes don’t respond much or disappear from the conversation, but it’s mostly because I don’t feel I have much to add and so I read and try to learn. Sometimes this place is too fast for me, but there’s always a place to jump in and begin again. That’s a cool thing. And rare.

And to the rest of you, just thanks. For making me think, laugh, learn and figure some things out. I hope the coming year is better than this one for all of us. Love ❤️ you all.

I don’t need a religious pitch.

Most of my family has disowned me years ago because I don’t accept their religious assertions.

Grief is not equal to religion.

As for chatting on-line, no amount of chatting with anyone is going to assuage my mother’s, sister’s, or my grief. (Those folks across the street? They think my sister deserves hell for her having “Teh Geyh lifestyle” and my mother and me for being atheists. I hear enough about that other times, I’ll pass on that now.)

Catch y’all some other time. Enjoy the holiday.

I wonder if Trump’s mental decline can be tracked by observing his use of makeup. On average it seems to be getting darker and darker, with poorer blending (as in none at all) on the sides. At times it is approaching some sort of ritual mask look.
His followers seem to be OK with this, though.

Just heard an interview with Eric Idle on NPR (ostensibly about his book, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life) and learned two things: 1) he was a dear friend of Robin Williams, gave a number of anecdotes, but also said that Lewy body dementia was the cause of his depression and suicide (my husband died of this) and 2) he gave a passionate “hate” on Brexit, saying it was caused by big corporate media that weren’t even British (hello Murdoch) and that it was going to ruin England.

The odd thing is that a lot of people know that but are too stiffly upper-lipped to admit it or do anything about it.

Hope your end-of-year days are going well - better than mine, at any rate* - and that 2020 will follow through on the hope of improvement New Years always promise.

Found an interesting link vis dKos this morning: Adam Serwer in The Atlantic on scholarly critique of the New York Times’ 1619 Project.

It’s an interesting piece: not least in the fact it reveals that even professional “critics” of 1619 can’t really find substantive fault with the fundamentals of it: it’s just (IMO, anyway) more of the usual usual when it comes to race relations in this country: the old “history” vs. “ideology” critique: which almost invariable surfaces when anything dealing with race (and more generally, anything that deals with American History in anything other than simplistic rah-rah positivism) comes up in public discussion.

However the really depressing bit was a piece by Allen Guelzo in City Journal that Serwer linked as a point of “conservative rebuttal” (the other two links were to derisive comments by Newt Gingrich and Erick Erickson, so I ignored those) to the 1619 Project. It wasn’t so much the piece itself’s trite dismissiveness of 1619 as a sinister liberal “conspiracy theory” - which seems pretty much like standard RW “analysis” these days (i.e. viciously dumping on the source of criticism while ignoring any actual points which might be made) - but the comments section was the real cesspool. RTWT.

Feeling like he really fucked up here: there is so much evidence and so many instances of Trump’s guilt I’m still amazed he ended up where it did. Trump is guilty AF of Obstruction and I’m not sure why the House didn’t write Articles up for it.

I’m going off to my mother’s in a bit to eat tamales with her and my brother, smothered in his special queso sauce. It doesn’t feel like Christmas in south central Arizona. It’s raining on and off and I have my heater going (not just for the heat but for the damp). I’ll probably talk to my sister by phone while I’m over there—the one time of the year we talk. This year she fell down the QAnon rathole but thankfully my brother did not!

Overall, it was a good year for me. I got out of a job that was mentally like having a steel trap around my ankle into one that really has its moments, but it pays better.

I got to go to Japan again, and the thoughts and pictures I have from that experience make me happy on days when things are just weird. I want to go back next May and visit Tokyo, if possible.

Sometimes I think he means well, sometimes I think he’s mean. But he may not mean to be mean….

Many years ago, a colleague made a very hurtful, cruel comment that he thought was funny — and I never forgave him for it. We had had a good relationship until then but I could not get past his remarks. He was not a malicious person, just a jerk.

But one hard lesson learned throughout the years is people can hurt others, not through deliberate cruelty, but through thoughtlessness —- with no intention to harm. I lost a friend because in her hour of need, I failed to respond with immediate understanding (in that case, she called on my cell when I was at a brunch with other friends and I didn’t really want to talk). I repeatedly made efforts to repair our friendship — but she never reciprocated. So we all fail but hopefully we learn from these experiences and try to become better people.

National Security
In aftermath of Ukraine crisis, a climate of mistrust and threats
By Greg Miller and Greg Jaffe WaPo

This is a long read about the deconstruction of the administrative state, as Steve Bannon called for. What has happened to people who “stand in DT’s path” is awful.

… Veterans of the Foreign Service are bewildered. “These attacks — I’ve not seen anything like this since I joined the Foreign Service,” said John Heffern, a former senior State Department official who entered the department when Ronald Reagan was president. “Our work is promoting international universal values — freedom of the press and rule of law. Considering what’s happened in the United States, it undermines our ability to project that message to our foreign counterparts.” …

Fiona Hill, the former top Russia adviser at the White House, has endured obscene phone calls to her home phone, according to people familiar with the matter, and vicious assaults from far-right media. Alex Jones, the conspiracy monger who operates the Infowars website, devoted much of his Nov. 22 broadcast to smears against Hill. “I want her ass indicted,” Jones said. “I want her indicted for perjury. Today. Indict that whore.” …

“My entire first year of my tenure at the National Security Council was filled with hateful calls, conspiracy theories, which has started again” amid impeachment, she testified in October. For months, Hill arrived at work nearly each day to find venomous messages left on her work phone by a caller from Florida. The same woman called Hill at home several times, frightening her young daughter, according to two people familiar with the matter. …

Among the first to confront Hill when she joined the White House that year was Derek Harvey, who went to the NSC after working for Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on the House Intelligence Committee. On one of Hill’s first days on the job, Harvey told her he could not understand why Trump had allowed her into the fold, according to officials who witnessed the exchange. …

For decades, the GOP cast itself as the champion of the FBI, CIA, Pentagon and other national security institutions. But over the past three years, Republicans have repeatedly turned on those agencies when necessary to protect Trump’s presidency.
In their final report on the impeachment hearings, Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee focused on “unelected bureaucrats” as the true villains of the impeachment scandal. These officials made “accusations and assumptions” about the president, were “discomforted at Trump’s call,” and they “chafed at the president’s outside the beltway approach to diplomacy.”

(This picture was taken at a famous garden in Okayama that’s been around since the 17th century and entered its final form about 140 years ago.)

Happy Holidays / Merry Christmas / Happy Hanukkah / Happy Yule / Happy Kwanzaa!

If you ever have the chance I recommend visiting Kanazawa—the Kenrokuen garden is fabulous, and the town has a preserved/restored district of old samurai homes.

Stock report: I baked the bone to get the marrow but most of what looked like marrow was porous bone. So I didn’t get much out. Christmas is not ruined because what I have already is awesome. I’ll probably simmer this off for a bit and taste if it’s worthy. The schmutz of meat fat and gristle is already getting bland flavor so it’s flavor value is about cashed out.

All that flavor is in the liquid in my fridge awaiting the fat to rise, rise, RISE!

Rather, according to the spreadsheet data, younger people were more likely to be uncertain or ambivalent about the shape of the Earth, either agreeing that they have recently entertained doubts that the Earth is round or opting for the “Other/Not Sure” choice on the questionnaire. Importantly, these responses weren’t distinctive to those aged 18 to 24 but were comparably prevalent among those aged 25 to 34 and those aged 35 to 44.

The Sickness is spreading accross the ‘advanced’ societies. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that, at least as far as the US, conservatism is inherently anti-democracy, anti-government, and pro-fascist. While it evokes an extreme patriotism and nationalistic fervor, it is most definitely anti-patriotic.

I’ve been gathering thoughts on it and studying the idea for a few weeks now. Looking for books to explore on the subject.

Yes. There is evidence of a lot of this stuff. That is why Mueller said, “Read my report.”

I’m reading it and taking notes. Actually writing a concise summary I may post here or on FB. I’ve found that writing something out helps me learn it better. I went through the Mueller Report when it first came out but, like most others I suspect, read the Summary then skimmed through looking for the meaty bits. Then I started on the IG Report, read the Summary, then stopped. I realized I needed to take a slower but more methodical drive through.

And also, not be distracted by all the other news and info coming out. There’s just so much shit going on.

I decided to start over on Mueller and read through the whole thing, then I’ll go back to the IG Report and do the same thing. I’ve already read the Steele stuff a few times.

This is my ‘doing something.’ I don’t have the big $ to throw at campaigns now, and I’m in a solid blue district where Toolsi is not going to run again and the contender is a very solid choice (Kai Kahele). Now when I deal with online trolls I hit em with with a Wall of Facts, blocking when they just get ridic. Sooner or later somebody will see something and it will stick.

Yeah, but what he didn’t say was: “Read my report, then DO something about it”!

Even if he suspected that Trump, Barr, and the rest of the corrupt asshole GOP would simply release a lying bullshit “summary”, then start screaming NO COLLUSION!!1!!11! COMPLETE EXONERATION!!1!!!11! at the top of their lungs hoping (disgracefully, correctly) that the media would simply swallow the lies, and then move on, leaving “The Mueller Report” as “yesterday’s news”.

I think Mueller did a decent enough job in the actual investigations: but he either should have known/guessed that the fix was in from the get-go (he can’t have expected much else from that corrupt pig Barr) - or worse, he knew and just didn’t care.

BigPapa  Dec 25, 2019 • 1:22:31pm

weird - I heard holiday sales were down a little bit

If one want to make a comparison to Watergate, it’s this: the cover up (Russia) is worse than the crime (Obstruction). But by all other measures there is no comparison.

The crimes of Russia were probably not convictable in court but there’s also lots of issues where there is no law to regulate or govern seriously troubling issues or behaviour. We’re in a brave new world and a new Admin will have to get the FEC back up to health then add a shit ton of regulation to deal with problems Russia is very good at creating. The Mueller Report made that message loud and clear.

Fredo Jr was on the legal brink with the July 9 2016 meeting in Trump Tower and Mueller explains that there was considerable evidence of crime but A)there were many avenues for defense since some issues had no precedent and B) there were truly dumb asses and could say they didn’t know, even though they acted like they knew it wasn’t on the up and up.

So anybody who thinks being a businessman will make for a good government administrator, Team Trump’s activity with Russia will utterly smash that ignorance. The more I think about people like Fiona Hill, Marie Yovanovitch, and many of the other experienced employees that shined as solemn public servants in those hearings, the more I realize the seriousness of public service and oaths of office.

There are people who shy away from public service. Then there are those that are drawn to it. LC Vindman and many of the immigrant House Reps rose to the occasion in the hearings, they are drawn to it.

asshole

A delivery driver in Detroit, Michigan, who was supposed to be dropping off a package for an Amazon customer for the holidays, instead decided to destroy it.

Surveillance video shows the driver get out of his vehicle, place a package in front of the back tire and then proceed to run it over repeatedly.

It’s the video footage neighbors living on the 3500 block of Bellows Court never imagine cameras would capture.

The truck driver stopped in front of a home and carefully placed a package in front of his rear passenger tire after doing a door knock. He gets back behind the wheel and goes back and forth, crushing what’s inside.

re: #1 nowherenorth2

I just want to say happy holidays to all on here and for being awesome and helping me with political discussions and also being a voice of sanity in an insane and ridiculous world gone upside down.

Thank you Charles and thank you everybody

in the theology of trelotheism, the belief that god is a blind, insane child, one logically concludes that it would be blasphemous to attribute the universe - that minute by minute wreaks harm on the innocent, leaves evil unscathed, and, most of all, is indifferent to human kind on our obscure little planetoid - to a wise, beneficent deity who cares about mankind

the idea is absurd on the face of it

no, one must face up to often downright perverse cruelness of being thrust into a life caught in the random play of electrons and quarks. the only law and commandments here are a physics which we barely understand and which often still baffles us

why, then, do trelotheists strive to live a moral life in a meaningless universe?

there is a satisfying symmetry to asking pointless questions to those who believe there are no answers
