These are the golden days. For Christmas day we went to mil’s house. Cooked breakfast. Fresh, scratch-made apple pancakes and bacon. Then for dinner we did a boneless ribeye with a bacon cap, sauteed mushrooms, carmelized onions, baked biscuits. Really had a good time, even had surprise family dinner guests, neice, boyfriend and young 2 foster boys that were just a ball to have around. We gave them Hot Wheels. And so glad we got the big roast.

Briefly in and out for an update.

I spoke to my mother, sister, and eldest first cousin.

My mother is doing about as well as can be expected. My step-brother and his wife took her out to dinner today.

My step-brother and my sister have been working on the problem of an $80,000 medical bill. It would seem that may be a misbilling—the state of Illinois seems to have fouled up paperwork regarding that.

My cousin is going to leave Michigan day after tomorrow to stay with my mother. My sister has now raised sufficient funds and is looking for a plane ticket she can afford. She wants to fly out of Burbank but it appears she’s going to have to fly out of LAX.

Yesterday we picked up an advance refill for my wife’s medications at the county seat. As for my Phenobarbital, I ordered a refill the evening of the 23rd. It should be arriving in a day or two, after which my wife and I will leave for Chicago.

As I told my mother on the telephone this evening, I don’t know how much help I can be, but I can be a lackey or a Sherpa. I can also drive her around when my step-brother is not available or able.

She needs to get with the Illinois teachers’ pension people to have my step-father’s pension transferred to her, Social Security for the same, and still needs to look for another apartment.

It would appear we will all be in Chicago at the same time, so perhaps we can triple-team her into considering moving in with my aunt in Michigan (despite her resistance at the idea of living in our home town).

Mostly though, I just listened while she talked.

She did say she appreciates that.

Timing on a trip could be a problem. I can’t leave until my medications arrive, and the rainstorm now sweeping into California is expected to be a snowstorm when it gets here in a couple days.

As of yet the National Weather Service says they cannot tell how severe the storm will be, and are cautioning people here who are planning to travel in the next couple days to keep an eye on the weather report.

It’s usually best to move to where family lives; for years, a close girl friend had resisted entreaties from her children to move from Chicago area to Texas because she didn’t want to leave her friends, but she finally made the move this year. It can be overwhelming to cope simultaneously with the loss of a spouse and a move to a different state — so sometimes it might be preferable to postpone that decision, but you know her best and the right choice is different for each person.

Good luck and best wishes.

My mother says she doesn’t want to live with my sister in California (because she doesn’t want to live where the ground moves—she has a thing against that), nor does she want to move here (because we live out in the middle of nowhere though that’s not exactly true)—though the house across the street from us just went up for sale and we could squeeze out the bucks to help buy it outright (no loan) if needed.

As far as my aunt in Michigan, she and my mother are close in age and friendship (my aunt was married to her brother before he died in 1974), plus the cousin I mention lives in the house I grew up in, and it’s only one mile away, so that might work if we can convince her. Chicago is pretty expensive and her income is limited; our hometown is much less expensive (though has less things around than we do—there are no businesses or public facilities even though it has about two hundred people, whereas my town has a community centre, a public library, a store, and an art school—I don’t think she’d be interested in the gun shop—that said, the shop owner is looking to sell it because of his failing health and maybe she’d like to run a business).

I just want my mother to be happy and as far as possible financially secure.

Her principle objection is she doesn’t want to leave her vast network of friends: Those from her Irish folk sessions she’s held in her home over decades, the Morris dancing community, and the Renaissance fair community. Those are things my aunt, my sister, or me cannot replace.

She is also not a person who is very willing to accept financial help.

On a practical matter, none of that matters if she can’t afford to stay there. My sister and my step-brother are working to see if they can find a place she can afford to live with her means.

Big city vs small town — very different types of living and attracts different people. If your mother is reluctant to move out of the area, has your family looked into senior subsidized housing in the city itself or in suburban areas? The nicer places usually have waiting lists but it doesn’t hurt to check and you may just luck out.

Hope all works out for her. She needs time to heal from her terrible loss.

Both my step-brother and my sister have been looking into that as well. There is a problem with waiting lists as well as her limited means.

The problem with moving out of her apartment is more with her landlord. She is renting month-by-month (their lease expired years ago), and the landlord wants to renovate the apartment (she has already renovated the other apartments in the building).

She can’t renovate it as long as my mother is there, so now she wants her out. She has been patient since my step-father’s health started failing, and she’ll probably give my mother more time because of his death on the 24th. She won’t give her unlimited time though, and the rest of us are doing the looking she isn’t capable of doing now.

If he’d ever read his Bible, he’d know that pre-viability fetuses aren’t yet people (and killing one isn’t murder). Also, that the Leviticus prohibition on homosexuality is actually just a prohibition on one particular m/m sex act — other m/m sex acts aren’t a problem at all (see David/Jonathan story), and f/f relationships aren’t mentioned ever in the entire book (lesbian weddings often do a reading from the Ruth/Naomi story, the scripture is super-ambiguous about the exact nature of their relationship).

His degree in engineering and previously running for Governor of Colorado eminently qualifies him to weigh in on a teen girl climate activist from Sweden as “demon possessed” (by the way, why do Christians think everything they don’t like is demon possession—I’m demon possessed too because [many] Christians have a thing for epilepsy).

He has no education in theology or Biblical studies, so in those areas he has less training than me (because I’ve read the Bible and he cherry-picks it).

He’s also one of those Christians who wants to kill all Teh Geyhs, though I don’t know if that’s before you kill all the liberals or epileptics.

Matt Walsh is Catholic and this is Year A in the Lectionary, which concentrates on the gospel of Matthew. *sigh* Unfortunately, the reading for Epiphany (January 6, also my mother’s birthday) is only Matthew 2:1-12, which includes the story of the Wise Men and Herod, but doesn’t include the Flight into Egypt and Slaughter of the Innocents, which is Matthew 2:13-18. Blergh. SO MANY PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THOSE VERSES. Blergh.

I wish lesbian weddings would not do that, because Ruth is described in the text as Naomi’s daughter in law and if you read the text further, Naomi schemes to get Ruth into Boaz’s bed. I remember hearing in a class back in the 1980s that the person/people who wrote Ruth did it in part to counter the calls to divorce foreign wives in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. I mean LOOK, here’s the great King David’s g-g-grandmother, she was from Moab, and Israelites were flatly told not to marry Moabites!

Donald Trump’s impeachment was set in motion after a whistleblower report came to light complaining about the inappropriate nature of Trump’s July 25th call with Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine.

During that call, Trump leveraged the threat of withholding U.S. aid funding to Ukraine in order to get an investigation into alleged corruption of Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

Many had fixated on one aspect of the timing of the call: it came just one day after Robert Mueller testified in front of Congress about his report, a testimony that was widely seen as a dud. Perhaps Trump felt emboldened and newly vindicated by Mueller’s testimony.

But now we have a new clue as to what may have inspired the call to Zelensky: a Fox News poll that Trump had been touting that very morning:

secondnexus.com

TL;DR - Trump saw a poll on FNC on the morning of 7/25/19 that showed Joe Biden with a pretty commanding lead (10 points). And then, a little over one hour later, Trump calls Ukrainian President Zelensky to ask for a “favor” and then of course, after that, aid to Ukraine is promptly suspended.

Simply put, Trump freaked the fuck out over a poll. Yet again, as it has countless times in the past, his impulsiveness got the better of him…..and in this case, led to his impeachment.

A Caganer (Catalan pronunciation: [kəɣəˈne]) is a figurine depicted in the act of defecation appearing in nativity scenes in Catalonia and neighbouring areas with Catalan culture such as Andorra, Valencia, and Northern Catalonia (in southern France). It is most popular and widespread in these areas, but can also be found in other areas of Spain (Murcia), Portugal, and southern Italy (Naples).

The name “El Caganer” literally means “the pooper”. Traditionally, the figurine is depicted as a peasant, wearing the traditional Catalan red cap (the barretina) and with his trousers down, showing a bare backside, and defecating.

I never thought about a poll influencing the call but I definitely think it was the same impulsiveness we’ve seen from Trump constantly. 7/24 also my birthday was the day Mueller testified. I think he thought he was in the clear after that.

Trump’s impulsiveness has repeatedly gotten him into trouble in the past - his “business career” is ample proof of that. And you’re right that Trump likely thought he was totally in the clear after Mueller testified and probably figured he could do any damn thing he wanted without any repercussions; combine that with his reckless and impulsive behavior, and here we are.

Again, I’m so sorry for your loss.

The funeral home will contact Social Security on your family’s behalf, and getting copies of death certificates will help with all the other contacts since you’ll need those to make sure that the beneficiaries can get financials transferred in a timely fashion.

Pension funds typically have a set of forms you have to file to claim as a beneficiary. Banks too - POD/TOD accounts should be straight forward. If there are accounts that don’t have a beneficiary named, you’ll have to wait until someone is named administrator/executor (if will, that person is named).

During his second divorce… the Court ordered that the soon-to-be ex-wife could continue to live in the Mayor’s official residence, but the mayor had to move out. The judge was partially swayed by the fact that the Mayor hadn’t actually served Donna with divorce papers, he announced it in the middle of a press conference and seeing it on the TV was the first she’d heard about it.

What could be more American than fucking up a company and getting a Golden Parachute in the amount of $60 million?

It’s time to tax these Golden Parachutes at 100%!

Boeing’s ousted CEO Dennis Muilenburg left behind a long list of problems at Boeing, but he’s walking away with a sizable golden parachute.

The exact amount of money that he will leave with isn’t yet clear. That will depend on his negotiations with Boeing (BA), including how the company labels his departure — for example, was it a retirement? A resignation? A layoff?

But public filings show Muilenburg could be entitled to a benefit plan worth more than $30 million and, potentially, a severance payment of about $7 million. Muilenburg also has another $20 million-plus worth of vested stock and a pension package totaling more than $11 million.

Muilenburg, 55, became CEO of Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company, in 2015 after serving in several other executive roles, including chief operating officer and CEO of its defense space and security division, throughout his 34-year tenure at the company at Boeing.

He should get life+20. As I occasionally, though modestly, remind people from time to time, I have been a pilot for 54 years. When I first read about the 737 MAX’s problems I was incredulous. They tried to patch an inherent stability problem with a control gimmick? Then failed to tell people about it? No fucking way, I thought. Maybe the ass/elbow media have it wrong, as usual with aviation stories. But, no, it was true, and 300+ people died.
Thanks to this fiasco, and to the regulators who gradually allowed Boeing to gain a monopoly on commercial airliner production in this country, our strongest industry is now a shambles. We aren’t #1 in the world anymore, we will soon not even be #1 in this hemisphere.

Things that make you go hmmm….

Another Kevin Spacey accuser, Ari Behn, has died.

Behn, who accused Spacey of groping him during a Nobel Peace Prize concert in 2007 died by suicide on Wednesday at the age of 47, according to CNN. At the time of the alleged incident, Behn was married to Princess Marth Louise of Norway. The couple had three daughters. Norwegian King Harald, in a statement to Hello!, said, “It is with great sadness that the Queen and I have received the message of Ari Behn’s passing. Ari has been an important part of our family for many years, and we carry warm, fond memories of him. We are grateful that we got to know him.”

This death comes just three months after another Spacey accuser, a massage therapist known only as John Doe, died before his scheduled trial was able to take place. After the death of John Doe, the groping case against Spacey was dropped.

Behn’s suicide also comes on the heels of a bizarre video of Spacey that was posted online Christmas Eve. The video shows Spacey in character as Frank Underwood tending a small fire and speaking directly into the camera as he once did on House of Cards before his character was written off the show.

Winter Storm Watches are in effect for Friday late afternoon through Sunday morning for far eastern Laramie County, Goshen County, and Niobrara County in Wyoming and all of the Nebraska Panhandle. Areas east of the orange dashed line have the greatest chance to see snowfall totals of 5-8” with higher localized totals especially along the Pine Ridge area between Harrison and Chadron. Slick to snow-covered roads may impact travelers especially along Interstate 80 in Nebraska so take the time today to adapt travel plans accordingly, so you can get to your destination safely. Follow the forecast at weather.gov as headlines change as we get closer to Friday afternoon.

As a Christian, this irritates the hell out of me.

The Diocese of Lafayette posted a picture on Facebook showing the plane with several members of the St. Anne Church congregation surrounding it in the days before Christmas, preparing to launch the plane loaded with holy water.

“They loaded 100 gallons of holy water into the plane and the pilot sprayed the water onto the town and the nearby farms. Parishioners also brought water from home to the airstrip to be blessed,” the post read.

The Rev. Matthew Barzare of St. Anne Church told NPR that the plane was an efficient way to cover more ground for a blessing.

“We can bless more area in a shorter amount of time,” he said.

Just…all the Facepalms. The obsession with numbers that so many modern Churches have is maddening. I mean, I know you need a congregation to sustain a church and that new members are necessary for survival, but still. There are Preachers out there these days who get butthurt because they wanted 20 conversions this month and only got 11.

It’s not like Jesus said: “Hey man, you got get 1000 people to follow me or you’re not going to Heaven.”

Of course, He did give us the Great Commission but he never tacked any numbers on to it.

I have always believed it is the job of Believers to run the church as effectively as possible and let God deal with the numbers side of things.

Or, most dishwashers have a quick wash setting too. Not that most folks need it.

I can put wash on after dinner, and empty it before the next dinner. If I need it done faster, quick wash finishes in about an hour.

This is preying on the uninformed who think energy efficiency is a four letter word.

I don’t think the folks who eat up Trump’s anti-efficiency crap are “uninformed” - they’re just plain prejudiced. The sort of “low-information” types who have marinated in RW media hatemongering for decades, and for whom “energy efficiency” = “environmentalism” = “left-wing DFH eco-freaks who hate America telling them how to live”.

Same as with light bulbs, or car fuel standards, or carbon emissions: you can cite scientific data 24/7/365, even economic benefit in the form of lower electric bills, and it’s not going to make one iota of difference to that large fraction of the American electorate who will only see the issue in terms of the cheapest social-prejudice stereotypes: i.e. “Snotty affluent leftists from [naturally] San Francisco Berkeley wanting to make life uncomfortable for Us Just Plain Folks because they hate Us”.

A stupid message to be sure, and wrong on a vast number of levels; but probably, at this point, indelible.

To a limited market, to be sure: but they’d sell. And, when they would break down twice as fast, I’m sure the manufacturer (or, more likely, the importer) would find an easy way to blame the “eco-freaks” for their problems…

As someone who just had to replace a dishwasher, the LG my husband found on sale is freaking badly over engineered. I do not need my dishes steam cleaned. I use the one setting on it that is under 3 hours and it works just fine. I ran one of the super cycles when we first got it last month and it took 4 hours and I can’t for the life of me understand why this thing needs so much crap on it. New appliances are supposed to be energy efficient but I can’t see how that works if something has to run for 4 hours instead of one with no difference in how it works. I cook and clean up from that every single day and I cannot see how I would need to synchronize my dishwasher or my fridge with my computer or phone, and again wtf is up with steam cleaning dishes?

My husband thinks LG stuff is great. I hate it. We have a fridge from them too and it’s crap. I wanted a side by side because finding stuff in that stupid giant drawer freezer is a pain in the ass. He has been told he’s not picking out appliances anymore, lol. I’m a practical person, I don’t need all this overpriced and over engineered crap in my life. YMMV of course, and I do get that new technology brings better sanitation and all that, but it’s more shit to go wrong, and I bet if you took a survey of home cooks, they’d tell you that they don’t use half the crap on these appliances or know what it’s for.

That’s bizarre. When I use my dishwasher, I just run on it on a 30min energy efficient setting, and it does the job. The 1 hour setting is the longest program. This is a pretty bog standard dishwasher from a few years ago. And these dishwashers are designed to work in hard water areas, harder than we have in Glasgow. So I don’t get this “modern dishwashers use more water and energy” argument. In my experience, it’s the exact opposite.

I have a Bosch after old Kenmore kicked the bucket. The auto setting is roughly 2 hours; drying is uneven though - plastics don’t dry as well as with the Kenmore, but that’s because there’s no dryer element in the tub - it uses differential temps to get stuff drying.

But it cleans everything very well and is super quiet.

I could use the faster setting, but we typically run it before we go to sleep so there’s no reason to do it faster.

Our washer doesn’t have a dryer element either. However, it’s well insulated, so the heat left over after the wash pretty much dries the dishes by itself if you leave the washer for a bit after the wash has finished.

Quite agree about LG appliances: we replaced the refrigerator in our last apartment with an LG: structural - and cost - factors precluding our getting the Sub Zero we really wanted. Mediocre, to say the least: noisy, poorly laid-out, meandering “cold spots” (in the fridge section) that froze stuff seemingly at random locations, and an icemaker that was remarkably consistent in dumping a load of cubes (usually on the floor) when I removed the tray. Great ads, diligent consumer follow-up, crummy products.

I’m in favor of closely monitoring and auditing and taxing every church with more than 50 members. There should be mandatory rules for how much is given to charitable causes and which causes are given to. No minister has any fucking business with a private jet or a 30 room mansion on 20 acres. That’s not charitable and it shouldn’t be a tax deduction either.

Speaking of monitoring the activities of churches, the city of Cleveland is on it.

A few weeks ago, the church began a partnership with the Metanoia Project, a local nonprofit that aims to shelter the homeless in Cleveland. However, the city’s Public Safety Department sent the church a cease use notice.

While part of the notice asks the church to update its fire security, it also demands the church change its title from a religious institution to a homeless shelter.

Pastor Nozomi Ikuta understands the need to update the building’s fire safety, but not the order to change the church’s identity.

“You’re asking to update our fire extinguishers, that’s understandable,” she explained. “But you’re asking us to change the use of our building. We’re a church, we have services here.”

19 News reached out to city representatives, but they were not available for comment due to the holiday.

Pastor Ikuta hopes to find a solution that will allow the church to continue to help the homeless while also retaining their religious title.

Well, just following them wouldn’t necessarily mean anything. (For example, atheists tend to follow wingnut preachers on social media, because you need to know how they are thinking to protect yourself.)

Retweeting coded language from TERFs might not even necessarily mean she is one (that’s the point of culture jamming coded language).

However, when it was pointed out to her and she doubled down on her defence, that kind of made it apparent. She does not appear to believe all people should be treated on their merits, and the anti-scientific notion that gender must fit into one of two boxes that match your bits.

The comparison would only work if she followed more trans activists. Someone has done the research and she doesn’t appear to follow any.

One of the accs JKR follows. I’m hiding it because it can be traumatizing. (The author died in Sep. this year).

Bits that can be removed or grown. GRS (forth coming) and estrodiol (breasts) so yeah, fuck her.

Wholly crapballs.

Graham Lineham (who is in that thread) is a notorious homophobe as well.

re: #212 Mattand

So Gosar tweeted a video on Xmas of Bill Clinton protecting Hillary from an accident as an insult?

Am I being denser than usual here, or am I risking brain injury trying to think like a conservative?

When the lamp falls, Hillary is heard shouting “Jesus, Mary and Joseph!” the way some of us might yell “Oh shit!”

Lol, thanks for the reply, but I’m still not seeing why Godard thinks it’s an insult.
