From the previous thread:

re: #220 Nyet

That I don’t know, I’ve just read some lines by him that suggest he’s not, but maybe that’s not the whole picture.

The UK national lottery gives money to charitable organisations.

One such organisation which qualified is named Mermaids, an organisation which provides aid to transgender youth and their families.

Graham Lineham went to the UK’s equivalent of One Million Moms (Mumsnet) and raised an army of people to protest via E-mail, causing the lottery to suspend a grant of £500,000 to Mermaids.

Hbomberguy (a YouTuber who discusses philosophy and video games) decided to throw a big FU to Graham Lineham by playing a speed play of Donkey Kong 64 to raise $500 for Mermaids through donations back in January.

He went almost sixty hours before completing the game. The livestream went viral around the world, with famous people dropping into the livestream (including AOC).

The event turned out to be more than him playing the game. As it went on, transgender people from around the world were sharing their stories and problems in the thread, personalising the issue for those who didn’t know those problems even existed. Hbomberguy wound up just being the game playing behind the fundraising effort led by his friends. He says imagine what we could have done if they actually organised it.

By the time the stream was over, he’d raised $385,000 for Mermaids.

Cherry on the top? The national lottery decided that most of the crap sent in by Mumsnet was copypasta and sockpuppets, and gave Mermaids the £500,000 anyway.

He spoke about the event at the 2019 XOXO festival in Portland, Oregon (34:13) and how it evolved from an FU to Graham Lineham to a worldwide event.

The best thing Trump has done is speaking the quiet part out loud.

Makes it easier for us to prove what he’s really doing; previous Conservatives were able to retain plausible deniability in ways that Trump just can’t.

LOL. Yeah, I saw that earlier and was like: NOPE!

I already practice good habits to keep my blood pressure under control but it has been somewhat elevated for the past couple of months (140/90 range). Both my parents have hypertension as did my maternal grandfather.

Doctor gave me two months to try and get it down using natural means before she puts me on blood pressure meds so that’s what I am working on now. Obviously trying to diet during the holidays is something of a losing cause, so I am trying to prepare to hit the ground running for 2020.

But I am not going for any fad diet or anything stupid like that. More like some minor tweaks to my current diet (which is reasonably healthy already) to help things along.

Honestly, I think the higher stress levels I’ve been under for the past year or so due to a variety of things may one of the biggest things hurting my BP.

My diet is more like “eat when you’re hungry.” My weight tends to fluctuate between 115# and 125#.

My blood pressure is fine, though my cholesterol levels are marginal. The VA used to give me crap about the cholesterol but doesn’t any more, as it’s stayed the same for a couple decades.

I’ve heard that with everything from six to 12 hours for the “fast” interval, and have tried it with the 12-hour interval (every day, not a few times a week). I haven’t been able to do it lately and didn’t do it long enough to draw real conclusions, but I felt better when I was on it.

Well when the QAnon nutters draw from Christian nutters, I have no idea what will happen.

Some of the Christian apologetics video titles on YouTube today (these are real):

Atheists Defend Incest & Necrobestaility
Why Do #Atheists Often Equate Us With Apes?
WHY JESUS? 10 objections to Christianity — unbelief after 9/11, the new atheists, the DaVinci code
The Brain Mediates Consciousness from the Soul
Byzantine Ugly: Holy Spirit, Fake Atheism, Ugliness, and Parade! (I don’t get it either)
Argue Against Evolution And Win (for the billionth time, evolution is not atheism)

Lest we leave Muslims out:

مأزق الإلحاد مع تطور العلم الحراك_مستمر The dilemma of atheism with the development of science (a Dennis Prager video translated into Arabic)
Truth Behind Theory Of Evolution (You’d be unsurprised to learn the Qur’an proves evolution is wrong)
Free speech rights debated over Atheist vs. Muslim (CNN article, a judge threw out a case in Pennsylvania where a Muslim assaulted an atheist protestor, saying the atheist had no right to hold such a position of free speech and deserved to be assaulted for attacking a religious view, arguing “abuse of rights” will result in loss of them. Recording in the courtroom shows the judge called the atheist a “doofus” and that there was “no evidence” of the assault which was caught on video by multiple people, the judge is apparently a Christian)

Or Judaism:

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks’ Response to Atheism (he thinks we have no meaning to our lives)—that’s Lord Sacks, he is a UK peer.
God Gave Israel Land (Justifying Israel’s suppression of Palestinians)
Debating an Atheist (shorter, we’re evil and assertions of Judaism can’t be questioned and atheists have a burden-of-proof to prove their non-belief)

I heard the reviewer being interviewed on NPR when I was going up to get a script for my wife. She was saying something to the effect that the movie made it sound like Jewish people had never heard of Christmas or what it is all about, like they needed to be taught. As if living in the US isn’t enough (over)exposure to Christmas to kinda pick up on the tradition.

which is really weird, because the film they showed as an example is exactly the opposite, it’s the Jewish Guy showing the Christians what Hanukkah is about (more or less) when they discover he’s never celebrated Christmas. It’s a Hallmark movie, I end up watching them all because that’s the spouse’s favorite source of formulaic escapism. I don’t mind honest criticism of Hallmark (yeah, they only have like 4 or five templates for plots in their films and they are trying to expand the presence of POC in their movies too, be nice to see them do the same for gender), I only wish it was accurate.

This is too long for a tweet so I’ll put it here.

Well, I looked it up in Ritchie Yorke’s Led Zeppelin: The Definitive Biography. There is this quote from Jimmy Page:

“We were sitting there kicking around group names and I suddenly remembered a name Keith Moon had come up with some months earlier. This goes right back to the days when Simon Napier-Bell, who was managing the Yardies, was trying to get solo discs from each member. Jeff Beck and I were collaborating and in those days with these solo diversions it seemed we should use other musicians. So there was Keith Moon, John Paul Jones, Nicky Hopkins on piano, myslef on twelve-string guitar and Jeff. We were doing ‘Beck’s Bolero’. After that session Keith Moon was really fired up - and I don’t blame him - and he said, ‘We must get a band together - how about it?’ He was fed up with The Who at the time, and he wanted to take the Ox - John Entwhistle - with him, with Jeff, myself, and all the rest of us. It didn’t happen because we couldn’t find the right vocalist. But Keith’s name for the band, Led Zeppelin, stuck in my mind.’ (p. 69).

“That’s the official version of events. However, John Entwhistle, bass player with The Who and a budding solo star in his own right, swears that he thought up the name. ‘There were several occasions during The Who’s career when both Keith Moon and myself were going to leave the band,’ Entwhistle claimed. ‘Once when we were in New York, I sat down with Keith and our chauffeur at the time, a guy called Richard Cole, and tried to come up with possible names for the new band we planned to form. That’s when I flashed on Led Zeppelin. I also came up with the idea for a first album jacket with a Zeppelin going down in flames. The reasons behind it are quite simple. In those days it was a favourite line among British rock bands. ‘How did you go?’ one group asked another, ‘Cor, we went down like a lead zeppelin,’ they would reply. Not long afterwards, the chauffeur Richard Cole went to work for Jimmy Page and Peter Grant and he must have told them the idea. But I was definitely the one who first thought of it. Later on Keith Moon claimed that he came up with it, which made me very angry. When I heard that Jimmy Page was going to use it, I was a bit pissed off about it. Later on, I didn’t care that much: after all they became an institution.’ (Ibid., p. 70).

Yeah, that’s something that I doubt any of the MAGAts know: Trump required any film production that wanted to use his property to write in a cameo for him. In other words, his appearance in Home Alone 2 was purely about contractual obligation than any belief that it added something to the film. How do we know this? Because you can cut it from the final product and all you lost is a few seconds of film.

Chris Hayes has a lawyer representing TX landowners fighting Trump’s eminent domain grab for his stupid fucking wall.

I really want Hayes to ask him how many of these folks voted for Trump.

Probably more than a few, but a good number of border landowners are descendants of families that have owned the land since before the Mexican War of Independence (ended 1812). It’s worth noting that Mexico considered the Texas border in 1835 (Texas independence) as being the Nueces River. When Texas became a state, the US sent soldiers in to basically seize the land between the Nueces and the Rio Grande (called the Rio Bravo in Mexico).

So, in short, there is a lot of generational anger at the US government going back to the Texas annexation about this land that Trump is seizing right now for his damned wall.

That goes back to certain plants having phytoestrogens (chemicals which bind to the same receptors that oestrogen does, but do not act like oestrogen because they are not).

It comes from wingnut claims about soya, posited by Paul Joseph Watson on Infowars, hence the “soy boy” claims of effete men.

By the way, Jones’s “Brain Force” is made of soya.

What grows breasts on men is either a) obesity, or b) gynecomastia (which is not caused by any food product).

Speaking of 401Ks, I often get amusement about how many people say they’re cool with Trump and/or his policies because of some variation of “My 401K is doing great!” Why do I find that hilarious? Because of all the anecdotal stories I heard during the Great Recession about people who had to dip into their 401Ks just to cover basic expenses. So yeah, you’re not looking at your retirement, my friends. You’re looking at your bailouts when the halfwit sinks the economy.

My 401K is doing great (I know the market will go down at some point), but that doesn’t excuse putting kids in cages, fucking up the environment, being a racist, allowing foreigners to fuck with our elections, etc. Fuck trump and his supporters who care more about money than anything else.

I drank the Kool-Aid. No, literally. I was in the store today and saw the Kool-Aid display. I had forgotten that the stuff existed as a real product. It occurred to me that I have not drunk any in at least 30 years, not since I was in the National Guard, and I had never bought any with my own money in my entire life. I bought two packets, Tropical Punch type, and mixed one of them up tonight. The stuff isn’t bad, but with sugar the calorie count is astronomical. I can see how it will disguise the taste of potassium cyanide though.

they did not use Kool-Aid at Jonestown. From my novel, Research.

*Kool-Aid is a trademark of Kraft foods. To say that Kraft had nothing to do with Jim Jones and Jonestown is an understatement. The inhabitants of Jonesstown drank their potassium cyanide in Flavor-Aid, an obscure competitor to the more popular drink. Since most reporters had consumed Kool-Aid as children, the more popular drink got credit for the largest example of insanity in the modern world and was also blamed for the 700 plus deaths at Jonestown.

Jonestown used FlavorAid. It is a slur on the state drink of Nebraska that Kool-Aid was what they used. [/rant]

Kool-Aid is much lower in calories if you don’t use table sugar to sweeten it. (The VA told me I needed to knock off the sugar in Kool-Aid, so now I use sucralose.)

I’ll drink to that.

People with nothing better to do still dispute which brand was used or whether both might have been.

The drink became linked to the Jonestown mass murder-and-suicide when it was learned that the cyanide poison taken by or forcibly administered to the commune’s members was placed in Flavor Aid. Large barrels filled with the grape variety, laced with the cyanide and a variety of tranquilizer drugs, were found half-consumed amidst the hundreds of bodies. Kool-Aid, rather than Flavor Aid, is usually mentioned in connection with the massacre, due to its status as a genericized trademark. The association with Kool-Aid has spawned the figure of speech “drink the Kool-Aid” but is regarded by some sources as a factual error. Others insist this was not a factual error as both Kool-Aid and Flavor-Aid were found among the commune’s supplies: film footage shot inside the compound prior to the events of November shows Jones opening a large chest in which boxes of both Flavor Aid and Kool-Aid are visible.

Reminds me a little of the poor guys who make Tiki torches.

Kool-Aid is great when you want to let children dye protein fibers (like wool) with a non-toxic dye. Naturally you use unsweetened Kool-Aid, but the food dyes also will dye the aforementioned protein based fibers and in the summer you can do it in a zip lock type plastic bag set out in the sun.
One wonders if it dyes one’s innards as well?

Of course, Trump hasn’t yet started a pointless major war with significant American casualties at a substantial cost — so there’s that on his side. Trump talked about his appearance in the movie with troops stationed overseas during a video call on Christmas Eve from Mar-A-Lago.

“Well, I’m in Home Alone 2 and a lot of people mention it every year, especially around Christmas,” Trump said. “They say, ‘I just saw you on the movie.’

Sure they do.

Many homeless people have mental health issues (some prior to being homeless, some developed as part of being homeless or some combination of both). The fact that some of them are antisocial tells us nothing (except that Dinesh is a felon and an asshole).

Many homeless people have mental health issues (some prior to being homeless, some developed as part of being homeless or some combination of both). The fact that some of them are antisocial tells us nothing (except that Dinesh is a felon and an asshole).

California used to have state-run in-patient mental hospitals (Camarillo being perhaps the best-known). Governor Reagan ordered them closed as a budgetary measure. He said it would be so much cheaper if they lived with their families and were treated out-patient at community health centers.

Problem being

1) lots of them didn’t have families to live with; and
2) Reagan also took community health centers out of the budget.

There’s still some degree of “because they’re mentally ill” kind of homeless, but they’re nowhere near a majority. Most of today’s homeless it’s just because they have no money. And without an address they can’t apply for benefits. (also, slashing Section 8 housing benefits was totally a Federal decision, the States didn’t do it.)

Also, a significant percentage of “homeless” are employed. Shelters are way overcrowded and have sharp time limits. Sometimes they can scrape together enough money for a week or two at a time in cheap motels, living in their cars between times. At least until the car breaks down, or gets towed/impounded, etc.

I was homeless.

If Dinesh D’Felon offered me an apple, I’d probably wonder if it was poisoned.

Hmm. Fun. Just watched “Ready Player One”. Much better film than the reviews would have lead me to believe. Certainly far better than the book (serious good changes for a change :). Just thought I’d mention it for anyone looking for an interesting bit of brain candy.

Did he really say that? Then go home Cory, we do not need people who surrender to evil for any reason. And yeah, I consider that a surrender.

Dinesh is that man who would throw a bag of quarters on the subway track to watch someone get electrocuted or run over by a train, and he would brag of it afterwards.
