New Details on the US War Criminal Pardoned by Trump: Fellow SEALs Called Him “Evil” and “Toxic”

One of the most horrifyingly wrong things about our horrifyingly wrong president* is his attraction to and support for dictators… and sadistic war criminals. The New York Times has released video with disturbing new details about crimes committed by Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher, who Trump recently pardoned against the Pentagon’s wishes.

Chilling new details have emerged about the conduct of the Navy SEAL who was accused of war crimes but supported by President Trump. Confidential footage obtained by The New York Times shows members of SEAL team 7 being interviewed about the conduct of special operations chief Edward Gallagher. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin joined CBSN with more.

Gallagher is only going to be further elevated into hero status by Trump’s cultists. It’s also going to make Gallagher millions of dollars off these fucking donkeys.

I wonder what those fools will do when American soldiers are captured by enemy forces and tortured to death and it’s announced that’s retaliation for what Gallagher did?

Off the subject…but I read that story about Betelgeuse dimming and speculation about this being a precursor to a supernova. It has been on my bucket list since I first learned about supernovae when I was eight years old that I hoped there’d be a naked-eye supernova in my lifetime.

While SN 1987A was naked eye, it was in another galaxy and not very spectacular. The boyfriend and I did consider going to Central America to see it before it dimmed, but the combination of me being in law school and broke, and the political situation in Central America at the time was dicey (plus the weather might not cooperate), so it didn’t happen.

This is the one bucket list item I have no control over. I so want it to happen.

This is an excellent observation from Finnish military historian Petri Mäkelä. The Dirlewanger Brigade, named for its psychopathic leader, was a Waffen SS unit made up of criminals and thugs. It was so bad that other SS men complained about its brutality and lack of discipline.

Too bad Eddie Gallagher will be unlikely to share Oskar Dirlewanger’s fate. IIRC, Dirlewanger evaded capture right up until the war was almost over, but was finally captured and ID’s by a Red Army detachment. Who then simply turned him over to a group of his former prisoners, and walked away….

When Trump describes soldiers as killers, there’s no deeper level of meaning. The ethics of soldiering, that soldiers are people, that commanding others to do harm is a burden, simply aren’t present in his worldview.

Ultimately, we’re talking about people who believe that power justifies itself, and thus find greater and greater license thrilling. A man who kills freely, to suit his tastes and emotion rather than according to a standard of conduct, is exciting. It’s who they want to be; sadistic, enjoying cruelty openly and freely rather than through coded means.

You’re absolutely right about how he sees soldiers and it honestly comes from a place of being insulated from the reality of warfare. My grandfather I have no doubt was seriously impacted by what he saw in Korea as were my grand uncles who fought in WWII.

His April 2007 racist and misogynist crack about the mostly black Rutgers squad, an oft-replayed 10-second snippet, crossed a line that Imus had long straddled as his rants catapulted him to prominence. The remark was heard coast to coast on 60 radio stations and the MSNBC cable network.

Despite repeated apologies, Imus — just 10 years earlier named one of Time Magazine’s 25 most influential Americans — became a pariah for a remark that he acknowledged was “completely inappropriate … thoughtless and stupid.”

His radio show, once home to presidential hopefuls, political pundits and platinum-selling musicians, was yanked eight days later by CBS Radio. But the shock jock enjoyed the last financial laugh when he collected a reported multimillion dollar settlement of his five-year contract with the company.

The universe can be so fucking unfair, man…

Here’s this evening’s WashPost forecast. Safe travels!

Then there’s the snow. Snow is predicted across most of South Dakota by daybreak Saturday, spreading into northern and western Nebraska during the afternoon as cold air filters into the region amid a tightening temperature battleground beneath the storm. Recent periods of unusually mild air could make it hard for the snow to stick initially.

Snow is then likely to make it to eastern North Dakota and Minnesota on Saturday evening, becoming heavy overnight into Sunday. The long-duration snowstorm is expected to rage in northeastern Nebraska and the Dakotas on Sunday, walloping western and northern Minnesota. Minneapolis proper may dodge the snow, as snow bands pinwheel to the north of the city.

A widespread 10 to 12-plus inches is expected for much of northern Nebraska, particularly north of Highways 20 and 275. Similar snowfall amounts are also predicted for a large chunk of the Dakotas and Minnesota. The storm should be accompanied by progressively higher winds as it intensifies, blowing and drifting the snow.

Snow looks to wind down west to east on Monday.

Rain here on Saturday and Sunday, mostly temps in high 30s low 40’s. 3-5” snow Monday but even that only brings a low of 18. Highs in the 20’s for Tues/Weds. Not bad for winter around here.

I’m a DV survivor, I know that handhold. He’s squeezing tight enough for her to be uncomfortable, by design. I know it’s a leap, but seriously, he will eventually snap. He thinks he’s bulletproof now, that’s not a good thing for the people around him.

So the NY times opinion piece discusses how men are not interested in Little Women. Probably because they will get girl cooties all over them. Based on my limited experience, seems to be true: several of us were at dinner; women movie goers were enthusiastic about seeing the film — a male movie goer initiated the conversation by saying that there was one movie he had no intention of ever viewing.

It’s becoming a “Day ending with ‘Y’” phenomenon to see reminders that Trump never really wanted to be impeached, he wanted to be “acquitted” so he could boast about such. The reality of being impeached has driven him totally batshit insane, which is quite an accomplishment compared to where he’s been so far in his presidency*.
