The Washington Post Looks Back: How Trump Criticized Obama’s Policy Toward Iran [VIDEO]

As president, Donald Trump has touted his Iran policy in part by saying Iranians no longer chant “Death to America.” Then an Iran-backed militia stormed the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad at the end of 2019 shouting exactly that. Of course, Trump is too stupid and ignorant of history to even know why they yell “Death to America.”

Just noticed Thanos’ posting about Geller and the Ground Zero mega mosque bulkshit.

This is the same site where Geller and the Islamophobes claimed Muslims would build a mega mosque that would tower over the Ground Zero site (mind you, 1WTC is the tallest building in the US and Western Hemisphere by measure to spire at 1,776 feet). Several other buildings, including those around the corner are over 1,000 feet tall.

This building? 70 feet. Towering indeed.

The latest plan calls for a community center and public space, with a mosque/prayer area in the basement.

It scarcely matters, when Fox News & Rush Limbaugh will back Trump up in anything he utters. Reality is now fungible, especially when the GOP base has the memory capacity of goldfish.

Who banged the drums for the Iraq war that 65% of Americans and veterans now say was a mistake? Fox News, Rush & right-wing hate radio.

Who insisted on total loyalty to George W. Bush as an awesome wartime commander in chief with a giant package, strutting about an aircraft carrier? Fox News, Rush & right-wing hate radio.

Who insisted that deregulating Wall Street was only common sense as business knows better how to manage money than that damn gub’mint? Fox News, Rush & right-wing hate radio.

And yet … these same outlets largely escaped any reckoning for how wrong they were.

Why? The viewership could not - indeed, cannot - EVER admit they were wrong. About anything. Because once one thing is wrong … then the entire edifice starts to crumble.

Is that starting to happen to Trump?

And because of these past remarks by Trump, the wingnut response…will be to blame Obama for Iran being in the position where is can influence Iraqis to attack our embassy. And that Trump is an amazing leader because the security reforms and measures implemented by Obama prevented any casualties at the embassy despite protestors breaking down the gates and setting fires while embassy staff cowered in a panic room.

“our greatest Warfighters”

jezuz godd

So - faced with what has almost certainly been well-organized and carefully-stage-managed (and now-terminated) piece of Riot Theater in Baghdad (and never mind that it appears - IMO - to have been stage-managed by what is supposed to be a “friendly” “allied” government), Trump’s reaction is to treat this like Operation Overlord redux?
And what are all these “greatest Warfighters” going to do once they get there? Strut around in combat gear to boldly defend the Embassy against an attack that’s NOT going to happen?

Idiot….

Trump basically making a play at repeating St. Ron’s Beirut barracks bombing, rushing troops into a central location as a “show of force,” but really presents little more than a convenient target to terrorist groups who don’t give a flying fuck about civilian casualties.

Yeah, this “show of force” is just putting what the cybersecurity geeks call “a larger attack surface” into the critical area.

Pinprick incitement attacks that lead to over-reactions of bombing (because you KNOW that’s what Trump will do, i.e. “Bomb the shit out of them.”)

I just don’t know how anyone looks at Trump and not only says “Hey this is a good President but hey this is a great person.” Trump is at his core undemocratic and hostile to democracy and only satisfied if he’s being worshiped. I’d say his friends weren’t worth it if they think this guy is it but then again the right wing mentality that emerged in the rise of Obama is what helped make Trump possible to a lot of Republican voters so even the anti Trump Republicans need to look at why the Republican base was so willing to embrace this guy. I would be furious if the Dems ever nominated someone like this. I have my ideological problems with Trump but some of the worst things about Trump aren’t ideology. It’s who he is as a person and leader. There’s nothing admirable about Donald Trump.

Ayep. No one candidate matched/surpassed Trump’s fundraising, thus he’s “way ahead” in raising funds while the Dems are “wasting money” splitting campaign donations between multiple candidates who can’t all win. It doesn’t matter that he’s gonna end up plowing a lot of those funds into his pockets or those of his lawyers, we’re supposed to believe it’s all going to this great “war chest” that he’s gonna unleash in the fall and crush the Dem nominee.

Yeah, I think I am going to get very used to this new-to-me D3200 and the Silver Efex workflow. I’m still not quite used to it, need to learn a bit more on the digital burning and dodging side of things, but I think things are going to come out better than they did when I was doing the m4/3 thing.

27
Targetpractice  Jan 2, 2020 • 11:55:51am

As always, the rule book is totally different for Repubs than Dems. We’re supposed to view it as a zero-sum game, that all the donations being brought in now when the field is wide-open means less money available later in the year as the field narrows and particularly after the convention.

Spending by PACs isn’t factored in at all, the whole focus is on what each campaign is bringing in individually, with the idea being that every dollar given to anyone other than eventual nominee being a dollar “wasted” and thus unavailable in 6-9 months.

Yes, Trumpism includes the usual cultic practices.

But here I will be boring and repetitious and restate again: Trumpism is very much tied into Christian fundamentalism, the collapse of the fundamentalist worldview that was already out of date in the 18th century when the US Constitution was written.

Said worldview is not only anachronistic in the 21st century but downright destructive to the general comity of our society.

Said worldview is very much a into patriarchy, and extended hierarchical structures extending from patriarchy, and magical beliefs which otherwise would not be of great impact but in the hands of demagogues become the lever by which said demagogues do great harm.

It’s why they’re aptly described as reactionary. American conservatism at its core is quite reactionary and this is especially true in the age of Trump.

It might seem pedantic of me… but space-time exists whether or not we want to believe it does.

Calendars though area really interesting, culturally. They are about dominance. This is why in some cultures calendars are set by the life of the ruler.

The Gregorian calendar is a leftover from when RC hierarchy were the big players in Europe. Even other people , such as your Jewish calendar, have to play second fiddle to it, because of cultural dominance.

What other candidates are failing to do, with the possibile exception of Warren, is prove that are just as electable as Biden.

What other candidates are failing to do, with the possibile exception of Warren, is prove that are just as electable as Biden.

“Electibility” will be the death of this country.

The failure of the current Democratic candidates, to find a way to keep the angst that Trump has caused among many groups from spilling over into blaming the Democrats, is starting to tell.

We can blame the both-siderism of the “media”, but it is the responsibility of the candidates to control their own narratives.

And the irony is, one person who has tried to discuss this problem of Trump poisoning the well, Buttigieg, is one of those who is now some sort of “Republican” (which he most definitely is not), in the view of the pipe-bomb throwers on social media.

The problem with “progressives” as a label is that it is easy to adopt but if all that means is adopting a type of radicalism where no one is ever pure enough, then we are in trouble.

There is a lot to be said about a candidate who can simply get a few things done. Not everything. Not perfectly. Just who can get some of the important things done.

Yet I hope that we can find candidates who can articulate that our communal well-being is at stake, and that very issue is the number one issue to tackle. We have to build a society that can withstand the ups and downs.

I agree and I don’t even like Pete that much at this point. The problem is yes the purity shit. There was that article the other day about how some young progressives are mad at Pete for “stealing” their thunder. The fact is Millennials are a diverse ideological group. The ones that embraced Sanders and Trump got all the attention but there’s a lot of us who are actually seeking our own paths. As I’ve often said, I have it with economic ideologues. I don’t care if it’s on the capitalist or socialist end of things. Economic absolutionism is harmful. I could die a happy man without ever seeing a meme again that acts like if we just adapted Scandinavia’s programs, we would be fine and I would do just as fine without another yay capitalism is the best thing ever meme because it’s all bullshit.

“OK, Boomer” was the result of an older person talking down to a younger person and the only thing she could do to get him to shut up was to shock him. It’s a completely understandable show of frustration, especially when the older person obviously doesn’t care what is going to happen after he dies.

I know man but I get tired of the Millennials who act like all our current societal problems are Boomers’ fault. That’s complete shit. Some of the most toxic people in this WH are close to my age. Stephen Miller is closer to being my age than I am to my closest sibling in age. A lot of times I wish Boomers would STFU about participation trophies and avocado toast but a lot of times I wish Millennials would stfu about how the Boomers didn’t do anything to improve society either. What I don’t like are old men like Bernie and Ron Paul who frame themselves as our only saviors. Bernie is nothing but a socialist version of Ron Paul and it’s not a surprise at all to me to see the same people who embraced Ron Paul embrace Bernie. Neither of those two guys has any understanding or at least communicating any understanding of what a President actually does to their supporters. As I said, forget electable, give me presiding. I agree with myself more than anyone else and I’m one of the last people I want to be President. We should be realizing that most of our candidates share a basic philosophy and we should be looking at which of them would do the best with the tasks a President faces. Who will appoint qualified yet thoughtful judges? Who will have a foreign policy based in reason that includes our allies? Who will be able to give comfort to people impacted by tragedy?

Mixed at best

The administration plans to announce this week that it will ban an array of flavored e-cigarette pods — closed cartridges that contain vaping liquids and have been embraced by teens. But it will spare e-liquids for “open tank” products that typically are sold by vape shops and are more commonly used by adults, according to a senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to describe internal deliberations.

The targeted flavors will include fruity and minty cartridges but not menthol — a significant retreat from an earlier proposal — and tobacco ones.

Yes, I’ve seen bigger gun collections. Putting them on the dining room wall is a little odd, though. None of those rooms look scaled or designed to be comfortable to sit in, which presumably should be easy on a multi-million dollar budget.

re: #148 steve_davis

who the hell is marianne williamson?

If the question is not rhetorical she is a New Age Spiritualist who was an announced Democratic Presidential candidate. Even took part in a few of the debates.

Her Wikipedia entry covers her background and some of the areas where she is controversial.

(I am being neutral here since in general I don’t care about her, never cared about her as a potential candidate, and have generally not thought her worth expending brain power or time studying about her or her potential as a candidate. In short, she never really made it onto my radar in the first place.)

It’s designed for ostentatious display and not for comfort. Comfortable rooms are places like studies that are cozy and close, or open and airy like a nicely shaded arbor or garden.

The guns are eh to me. I’ve seen far worse piles on display. No, the regal attitude in this pool table and room tell you more about his psyche than anything else and it’s not a sane person’s pool room.

Well, he is also married, so there is also the question of how much of that is him and how much is just “Yes dear.”

Agreed. What’s with the weird fucking tentacle things all over the damn place? That’s supposed to look chic and/or trendy?

She’s a crook plain and simple. I had multiple run ins with her in the 80s at the start of the HIV holocaust when she was fleecing victims for their money, telling them to not use AZT and instead use her “energized oils” and crystals!

TBH, that pool table, IMO is the only good thing about that house: except for the color: Jeeezus, baby blue? I’d love that table, but the first thing I’d do is to get somebody to strip and repaint it some properly innocuous color: hell, I’d do it myself with a can of brown spray-paint.

In keeping with the running theme of the rise of fascism in America, Hair Furor continues to demonstrate just why it’s absolute lunacy to concentrate an entire country’s decision-making powers into the hands of a man whose grasp on reality is fleeting at best.

It’s absolute lunacy to concentrate an entire country’s decision-making powers into the hands of a single person REGARDLESS of their intellect — a competent Trump would be far more dangerous and effective at leading to the rise of fascism and destruction of democracy.

They did a complete remodeling of our kitchen, building cabinets and installing Sears appliances. But thanks to Fast Fuck Eddie those days are gone.

I quit giving Sears any of my business back in the early 2000s.

I bought a bike rack for my Saturn and then tried to return it due to the fact that it was missing parts and also had a necessary hole drilled in a bracket more than a 1/2” from where it had to be to fit a bolt. And the store gave me a considerable hassle about returning it, even though I had the receipt. (It probably did not help that I was spitting mad at the time about the poor quality control of the product.)

They did a complete remodeling of our kitchen, building cabinets and installing Sears appliances. But thanks to Fast Fuck Eddie those days are gone.

They used to ship whole houses long before IKEA was a teardrop in the eye of a customer trying to follow directions.

I think their demise is linked to the rise of the suburban mall. Poorly lit, badly planned—it had to go once the internet hit if they didn’t change; and they couldn’t because they were attached to early-morning indoor walking spaces for elders. I’m not sure how Kohls survives.

A friend of mine lives near downtown Houston in one of those, one of several on his street. I think he mentioned it cost $10,000 originally, and came as a kit of parts.

My old boss was Iranian. Iirc he told me that their calendar begins with spring. I liked that. But yeah so much our culture is informed by Christian conceptions of things. Which is why you have to laugh when you hear that they’re persecuted.

The calendar start year may have been set by Christian conceptions but the 12 month calendar is inherited from the Roman Empire. And I have no doubt that some time in the future the start year will be reset again, assuming we haven’t destroyed civilization in the interim.

Yep, the old-school Julian calendar (thanks Caesar!) which was improved for the leap year by… Pope Gregory XIII.

Oh my!

A former Senate candidate for Florida who headlined the infamous Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 and inspired its slogans, has been arrested by police on a number of charges.

The Miami Herald reported that Augustus Sol Invictus, born Austin Gilespie, 36, had been under surveillance since Christmas Day after South Carolina authorities told Florida officials he may be in the area.

He was arrested at a mall in Melbourne, Florida as he left a gym by officers from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

He faces charges of “high and aggravated” domestic violence and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, according to his arrest affidavit. His address was listed as Ocala, Florida and jail records described him as an “out of state fugitive,” the Associated Press reported.

There’s a Craftsman house one door away from me. Shipped as parts many years ago.

This is so sad. My late husband traveled there a few years before we met and two of his photos of the Fall grace our walls. They were so magnificent.

Also, there used to be a super-tall building in Chicago that we went to as teenagers (because at my age the John Hancock building was the tallest when I was young). I think it was named after a certain retailer.

Actually, the start of the Christian (or Common) Era was retro-calculated in the early 6th Century AD/CE on a lunar/astronomical basis (and is likely “off” by a few years either way vis-a-vis the actual life of Jesus - of whom, pace the New Testament, little hard historical data exists). However, it’s become so fixed as a historical reference system, even if as a backup in non-Christian countries/societies, that it’s hard to see a “reset” - a la the French Revolutionary Calendar - taking hold.

Fun factoid: when I worked for a British couple, I was always curious why their (UK) fiscal tax year ran from April 6 to April 5. They just assumed it had “always” been done that way, and never questioned it. Much later, I read that it was a relic of the old English custom where the “calendar” year began on Lady Day (Annunciation, Mar. 25): but that the April 5 end date was set to accommodate the shift from Julian to Gregorian dates in 1753 (eleven days).
