Just noticed Thanos’ posting about Geller and the Ground Zero mega mosque bulkshit.

This is the same site where Geller and the Islamophobes claimed Muslims would build a mega mosque that would tower over the Ground Zero site (mind you, 1WTC is the tallest building in the US and Western Hemisphere by measure to spire at 1,776 feet). Several other buildings, including those around the corner are over 1,000 feet tall.

This building? 70 feet. Towering indeed.

The latest plan calls for a community center and public space, with a mosque/prayer area in the basement.

Who insisted on total loyalty to George W. Bush as an awesome wartime commander in chief with a giant package, strutting about an aircraft carrier? Fox News, Rush & right-wing hate radio.

Who insisted that deregulating Wall Street was only common sense as business knows better how to manage money than that damn gub’mint? Fox News, Rush & right-wing hate radio.

And yet … these same outlets largely escaped any reckoning for how wrong they were.

Why? The viewership could not - indeed, cannot - EVER admit they were wrong. About anything. Because once one thing is wrong … then the entire edifice starts to crumble.

And because of these past remarks by Trump, the wingnut response…will be to blame Obama for Iran being in the position where is can influence Iraqis to attack our embassy. And that Trump is an amazing leader because the security reforms and measures implemented by Obama prevented any casualties at the embassy despite protestors breaking down the gates and setting fires while embassy staff cowered in a panic room.

I just don’t know how anyone looks at Trump and not only says “Hey this is a good President but hey this is a great person.” Trump is at his core undemocratic and hostile to democracy and only satisfied if he’s being worshiped. I’d say his friends weren’t worth it if they think this guy is it but then again the right wing mentality that emerged in the rise of Obama is what helped make Trump possible to a lot of Republican voters so even the anti Trump Republicans need to look at why the Republican base was so willing to embrace this guy. I would be furious if the Dems ever nominated someone like this. I have my ideological problems with Trump but some of the worst things about Trump aren’t ideology. It’s who he is as a person and leader. There’s nothing admirable about Donald Trump.

No one candidate matched/surpassed Trump’s fundraising, thus he’s “way ahead” in raising funds while the Dems are “wasting money” splitting campaign donations between multiple candidates who can’t all win. It doesn’t matter that he’s gonna end up plowing a lot of those funds into his pockets or those of his lawyers, we’re supposed to believe it’s all going to this great “war chest” that he’s gonna unleash in the fall and crush the Dem nominee.

As always, the rule book is totally different for Repubs than Dems. We’re supposed to view it as a zero-sum game, that all the donations being brought in now when the field is wide-open means less money available later in the year as the field narrows and particularly after the convention.

Spending by PACs isn’t factored in at all, the whole focus is on what each campaign is bringing in individually, with the idea being that every dollar given to anyone other than eventual nominee being a dollar “wasted” and thus unavailable in 6-9 months.

I could go with they got treated unfairly for being minority candidates, but I think it’s a stretch to say they got punished for criticizing Biden, especially since one of Biden’s biggest support groups is African Americans. I agree and I don’t even like Pete that much at this point. The problem is yes the purity shit. The ones that embraced Sanders and Trump got all the attention but there’s a lot of us who are actually seeking our own paths. As I’ve often said, I have it with economic ideologues. I don’t care if it’s on the capitalist or socialist end of things. Economic absolutionism is harmful. I could die a happy man without ever seeing a meme again that acts like if we just adapted Scandinavia’s programs, we would be fine and I would do just as fine without another yay capitalism is the best thing ever meme because it’s all bullshit.

We should be realizing that most of our candidates share a basic philosophy and we should be looking at which of them would do the best with the tasks a President faces. Who will appoint qualified yet thoughtful judges? Who will have a foreign policy based in reason that includes our allies? Who will be able to give comfort to people impacted by tragedy?

It’s designed for ostentatious display and not for comfort. Comfortable rooms are places like studies that are cozy and close, or open and airy like a nicely shaded arbor or garden.

The depressing thing is I remember Sears used to service what they install and their warehouses kept replacement parts for everything.

They did a complete remodeling of our kitchen, building cabinets and installing Sears appliances. But thanks to Fast Fuck Eddie those days are gone.

I quit giving Sears any of my business back in the early 2000s.

I bought a bike rack for my Saturn and then tried to return it due to the fact that it was missing parts and also had a necessary hole drilled in a bracket more than a 1/2” from where it had to be to fit a bolt. And the store gave me a considerable hassle about returning it, even though I had the receipt. (It probably did not help that I was spitting mad at the time about the poor quality control of the product.)

They used to ship whole houses long before IKEA was a teardrop in the eye of a customer trying to follow directions.

I think their demise is linked to the rise of the suburban mall. Poorly lit, badly planned—it had to go once the internet hit if they didn’t change; and they couldn’t because they were attached to early-morning indoor walking spaces for elders. I’m not sure how Kohls survives.

A friend of mine lives near downtown Houston in one of those, one of several on his street. I think he mentioned it cost $10,000 originally, and came as a kit of parts.

My old boss was Iranian. Iirc he told me that their calendar begins with spring. I liked that. But yeah so much our culture is informed by Christian conceptions of things. Which is why you have to laugh when you hear that they’re persecuted.

The calendar start year may have been set by Christian conceptions but the 12 month calendar is inherited from the Roman Empire. And I have no doubt that some time in the future the start year will be reset again, assuming we haven’t destroyed civilization in the interim.

Oh my!

A former Senate candidate for Florida who headlined the infamous Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 and inspired its slogans, has been arrested by police on a number of charges.

The Miami Herald reported that Augustus Sol Invictus, born Austin Gilespie, 36, had been under surveillance since Christmas Day after South Carolina authorities told Florida officials he may be in the area.

He was arrested at a mall in Melbourne, Florida as he left a gym by officers from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

He faces charges of “high and aggravated” domestic violence and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, according to his arrest affidavit. His address was listed as Ocala, Florida and jail records described him as an “out of state fugitive,” the Associated Press reported.

Also, there used to be a super-tall building in Chicago that we went to as teenagers (because at my age the John Hancock building was the tallest when I was young). I think it was named after a certain retailer.

Actually, the start of the Christian (or Common) Era was retro-calculated in the early 6th Century AD/CE on a lunar/astronomical basis (and is likely “off” by a few years either way vis-a-vis the actual life of Jesus - of whom, pace the New Testament, little hard historical data exists). However, it’s become so fixed as a historical reference system, even if as a backup in non-Christian countries/societies, that it’s hard to see a “reset” - a la the French Revolutionary Calendar - taking hold.

Fun factoid: when I worked for a British couple, I was always curious why their (UK) fiscal tax year ran from April 6 to April 5. They just assumed it had “always” been done that way, and never questioned it. Much later, I read that it was a relic of the old English custom where the “calendar” year began on Lady Day (Annunciation, Mar. 25): but that the April 5 end date was set to accommodate the shift from Julian to Gregorian dates in 1753 (eleven days).
