And Romancelandia is blowing up again because it appears the staff of the Romance Writers of America encouraged Nice White Lady (NWL) writer Kathryn Lynn Davis to file a complaint against Chinese-American writer Courtney Milan (pen name of Heidi Bond, former clerk for the 9th Circuit and the Supreme Court, now penning romance novels). It also turns out that Davis’ claim of losing a contract because Milan had called one of her books “fucking racist” on Twitter isn’t true. There was no contract.

theguardian.com

It also appears that RWA may have libeled Milan in an email sent to the entire membership (~9,000 people), in which RWA repeated the claim that Milan had caused Davis to lose the non-existent three-book contract. This is a pretty dumb thing to do, since Milan is a former attorney.

Once the dust settles, Milan may come out owning RWA.

ETA: the same staff that encouraged Davis also deep-sixed ethics complaints from women of color and sexual minorities.

It was alleged that Carlos Ghosn, former head of Nissan, recently under house arrest in Japan, lately returned to Beirut, had been smuggled out in a double bass case. Apparently not.

(I have not read the WSJ article as I don’t have a subscription.)

Pity the surveillance tapes apparently show him just walking out because the Japanese had gotten lazy and were only checking them once a month. Still the box story is probably what will remain in people’s minds and eventually be in the Hollywood Movie.

In the end, much as I like Japan and enjoyed my time there, I don’t blame him. The judicial system there is rigged, especially if you’re a gaijin. 14 million is a cheap fine at that point.

Charles Pierce hits the nail on the head again!

The American history with Iran is a microcosm of everything we’ve done wrong in that part of the world since the end of World War II. Basically, we’ve treated Iran like a chess piece and not like a nation made up of living, breathing human beings. (That last bit is summed up by a remark attributed to Henry Kissinger during the sanguinary heights of the Iran-Iraq War, to the effect that he hoped both sides would lose.) We shined on the secular Iranians who begged us to stop our support of the shah. Hell, we shined on the people who warned us there would be consequences if we allowed the shah to come here for medical treatment after he was overthrown (Kissinger’s idea again. He loved the shah.), and that led directly to the seizure of the embassy. The ascension of the United States as a successor to those European imperial powers in the wake of two world wars is nowhere more clearly drawn than it is in the postwar relationship between this country and Iran.

When the United States embarked on the calamitous invasion of Iraq—which, where it wasn’t based on lies, was based on the same kind of magical thinking that always marked American involvement in the region—Iran’s influence in the region as a large, well-armed country to balance out the large, well-armed country that had just come to town was magnified. The U.S. quickly got entangled in campaigns against successive militia groups, most of them supported by Iran, and many of them ultimately directed by Soleimani. In fact, some of Soleimani’s soldiers fought against ISIS alongside U.S. and Iraqi troops. There is nothing about the relationship between these two countries that is not, well, Byzantine.

It seems impossible for the United States and Iran to disentangle themselves. We couldn’t even do it when Saddam Hussein became Our Newest Hitler in the 1990s, and this after we had supported him in his own war against Iran. But Iran was always looming in the background; the neocon fantasist who dreamed up the Iraq War famously cracked that “real men want to go to Tehran.” Whatever we may be hearing now about a “cycle of escalation” dating back to the American withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal last May, the real cycle has been going on for years.

We have a remarkable capacity for cutting loose from our own history. Those parts of it that we don’t simply ignore, we simply hand-wave into the past. Nothing ever connects to anything. Nothing ever leads to anything else. Because our intentions are always clean, and our motives always pure, nothing bad in the future can come of what we do today. How in hell could the CIA not see the Islamic Revolution coming in 1979, knowing what it had done decades earlier? Because the CIA was made up of Americans, who don’t believe that history plays the longest game of all.

link.esquire.com

That’s what I keep saying: that we are not the good guys here. We overthrew the democratically elected leader of Iran in 1953 at the request of BP’s predecessor oil company. Everything bad that has happened can be linked to that action. Who knows how Iran would have developed if we hadn’t intervened. A quote from Persepolis Rising (part of the Expanse sci-fi series) sums this up nicely: Your empire’s hands look a lot cleaner when you get to dictate where history begins, and what parts of it don’t count. It is tiresome to hear reporters talk about what happened 40 years ago as though that was the start of everything without any acknowledgement of what happened 26 years prior to that.

Also, the Nuremberg rules:
Any person who commits an act which constitutes a crime under international law is responsible therefore and liable to punishment.
The fact that internal law does not impose a penalty for an act which constitutes a crime under international law does not relieve the person who committed the act from responsibility under international law.
The fact that a person who committed an act which constitutes a crime under international law, acted as Head of State or responsible government official, does not relieve him from responsibility under international law.
The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him.
Any person charged with a crime under international law has the right to a fair trial on the facts and law.

Part of Trump’s problem is that he has no friends, and is incapable of conceiving of true loyalty. The closest he probably gets is Ivanka and that’s mostly some gross dysfunctional Electra shit.

So he has no idea of the kind of reverence, true affection and loyalty a guy like Soleimani has within Iran, especially within their leadership. He might be a monster to us, but from their perspective Trump just killed a national hero in a strike with very limited actual military value, if they wanted to strike back immediately they very well could have. The fact that they seem to be taking their time suggests that they’re likely crafting a bespoke response

My wife and I went to a Pakistani restaurant for dinner. Yum.

I can imagine some of the people in my town if they saw the two women in hijabs there: They would be diving under tables or headed for the exits.

The owners seemed a little taken aback at two pasty-white middle aged people coming into their restaurant. When my wife and I ordered what we wanted, the man asked us “are you sure? That’s pretty spicy.” The woman kept coming back to ask us if we thought it was alright.

When we settled the bill, my wife got with her and traded recipes with her.

On the way out, I held the door for my wife, and coming in the restaurant after was a woman wearing a niqab. I held the door for her as well, for which she thanked me. (I imagine people where I live would have been terrified of this tiny woman. These are the same people who were concerned when we went to Poland because they thought it was being overrun by Islamic State.)

That moment you find what others describe as routine… to be utterly terrifying nightmare fuel.

Fuck trump. I doubt that a majority of Americans even know about the hostages in 79. This country is fucked. Not because of trump, but because 40 % of the population think he’s a good president/decent human being.

Side note. Have to go to sleep, part of my new years resolution is to do things I’ve always wanted to do. Tomorrow I am taking a comedy class in the city. I’m going to do some stand up. We all know the world needs more Jewish Comedians (cause I’m never going to med school).

Pretty sure that in 1979, Americans were saying the Iranians should be over the Mossadegh overthrow, because it was so long ago - 26 years - and here we are, with Americans still obsessing on 52 hostages, taken, held, and ultimately safely released almost 40 years ago.

Oh, God, the Republicans will be running against Jimmy Carter again. They finally stopped doing that during the Obama administration.

I’ve been playing around with standup at open mics and taking a class over the last few months, too!

And weirdly, it seems I may be the only Jewish comedian in town at the moment. What has become of our people’s heritage? //

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Discovery Channel says a television show featuring Bill O’Reilly is not an official program on their network after receiving backlash for the former Fox News host’s appearance on the show amid sexual harassment allegations against him.

A Discovery Channel spokesman said the one-hour episode of “Pet Tales with Greta” appeared on the cable network through paid advertisement Saturday morning. The show is hosted and co-executive produced by Greta Van Susteren, a cable news veteran and former Fox News anchor.

The next winter we had one of our first major droughts. I and a friend went backpacking on December 20th. Even at 8000’ there was almost no snow, but it was cold so all the lakes were frozen at least four inches thick. (well, all but one, it was slightly more than 1.5” where it started cracking!) We could skate across lakes instead of boulder hopping around their edges and covered almost 3x as much distances.

Silly question but is Pakistani food similar to Indian food? I eat Indian food quite often and although it is spicy, it’s delicious and mostly healthy. Never been to a Pakistani restaurant and don’t believe there are any in Southern Maryland.

Indian restaurant that I used to go to in Philadelphia was actually run by Pakistanis. So to a degree I am not sure quite what the differences would be.

re: #147 Patricia Kayden

Not really. Why wouldn’t Iran strike us here?

You actually have to worry about more than Iranians. Trump has threatened Iran in such a way that any Shia-hating group in the Middle East might opt to kill a few Americans with the hope that Trump ham-fistedly blames Iran and attacks them without caring about who actually carried out the deed.
