This is serious. Southern California has a significant concentration of Iranians, between 300,000 and half a million people. Some of my college co-op buddies ended up in SoCal decades ago and they became citizens.

Apparently there was an Iranian concert just over the border in Canada and a lot of Iranian US citizens and residents are returning to being harassed by CBP.

A truly macabre bit of irony is that more than quite of few of these detained Iranians (especially the older generations) probably voted for Trump.

It never ceases to amaze me that white male supremacist enablers like these and (many others) never pause to think they too will eventually be included within the unclean, unwashed Subhuman heathens.

What’s troublesome is that if the use of nukes - by either side - is seen as unprovoked, it will be both a PR suicide as well as getting enemies that will stop at little to get your sorry ass. And it won’t just be the guys whose back yard you tried to convert into a day-glo parking lot.

I would be far more worried about biological warfare. Much easier to create than chemical or nuclear weapons and something we, with our craptacular health care system, are horrifically unprepared for. Combine that with the antivaxxer stupidity that is so prevalent and all you’d need is a sample of smallpox sourced from Russia or dug up from a mass grave somewhere and you could devastate the modern west.

For a long long time now, i’ve had a couple of side project novels i’ve toyed with, never really completing either due to Writer’s Indecision.
One of them is a thriller set in the not-that-distant future, set among other things after a vaguely-referenced, non-nuclear World War III; Readers aren’t supposed to know with certainty what happened, or how it happened.
So with the latest developments courtesy of the Lunatic In Chief, I guess I need to start changing the references to World War IIII for that to still apply….

(SEATTLE, WA, 1/5/20) - The Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) is assisting more than 60 Iranians and Iranian-Americans of all ages who were detained at length and questioned at the Peace Arch Border Crossing in Blaine, Wash.

Many more were reportedly refused entry to the United States due to a lack of capacity for Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) to detain them.

Other Iranian-Americans are about to cross the Peace Arch Border as they return back to their homes in the United States from an Iranian pop concert that was taking place on Saturday in Vancouver, Canada.

Those detained reported that their passports were confiscated and they were questioned about their political views and allegiances. CBP officials contacted at the Blaine Port of Entry provided no comment or reasons for the detentions.
…..
Crystal, a 24-year-old American citizen and medical student was allegedly detained and interrogated for more than 10 hours with her family at the Peace Arch Border Crossing before being released early this morning. “The vast majority of people being held last night were American citizens,” said Crystal. “We kept asking why we were being detained and asked questions that had nothing to do with our reason for traveling and was told ‘I’m sorry this is just the wrong time for you guys.’”

Doesn’t the Book of Revelations by John only mention 144,000 are to be saved before the ‘crisis’? (Ignoring that they are supposed to be from the 12 Tribes of Israel.)

Speaking as someone not familiar with the theology of the radical Evangelicals, wouldn’t that kind of put a crimp on the entire concept of ‘Rapture’?

To riff on this a bit. What if it already happened and they didn’t know any of the folks (144k out of 10 gigapeople) who were raptured?

“…The expansion of government power both at and near the border is part of a trend toward expanding police and national security powers without regard to the effect of such expansion on our most fundamental and treasured Constitutional rights. The federal government’s dragnet approach to law enforcement and national security is one that is increasingly turning us all into suspects. If Americans do not continue to challenge the expansion of federal power over the individual, we risk forfeiting the fundamental rights and freedoms that we inherited—including the right to simply go about our business free from government interference, harassment and abuse.”

I don’t think Korematsu would be useful to the government in this case. The Japanese who were interned during the war weren’t citizens, mostly (prevented from becoming citizens). The children were, but they were the minor children of noncitizens, and not interning them would have meant separating them from their families.

Obviously, DT and his thugs don’t care about that, but the courts will.

Looks like 27% of the total interned were children, so if we remove that percent entirely (by conveniently assuming that none of those children aged into adulthood during internment) then we can assume a lower limit of one in three adult internees being a US citizen.

The fact is Korematsu didn’t care about citizenship status. The only ways out of the camps on the US mainland were death, a limited number of advanced education exemptions dependent on sponsoring institutions, and (later) enlistment. A bunch of J-A US soldiers who had enlisted prior to Pearl Harbor were either summarily discharged (some honorably, some less than) or they were sent to Arkansas where they were disarmed and forced to perform menial labor. It took about two years for the 100th and 442nd to be formed and internees were allowed to enlist again. However there were many more volunteers at that point from Hawaii and very few from the mainland camps.

I received this in an email from Post Cards to Voters. Not a bad problem to have.

Our prior email inviting you to write postcards to Kentucky Democrats for Andrew Bailey’s January 14 Special Election was so well-received, we ran out of addresses in one day! We are sorry we did not anticipate such a strong response during the holiday season. For so many of you, it was frustrating to try to get addresses only to find the campaign was no longer listed in Abby’s menu. Please accept this apology. We would never send out an email to our entire volunteer list if we thought we only had enough addresses to last a single day.

They’re starting a new campaign to try to address purges from voter rolls in Texas.

We’re conducting a test with Texas Blue Action Democrats to remind Democrats who recently moved that they need to update their voter registration.

Ratfuckers gonna Ratfuck:

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey O. Graham suggested Sunday that Republicans should try to change Senate rules governing impeachment if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to withhold the charges against President Trump — an unlikely 11th-hour bid to begin a trial within days without the actual documents.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was unequivocal in a Senate floor speech on Friday that “we can’t hold a trial without the articles; the Senate’s own rules don’t provide for that.” But Graham (R-S.C.), a close ally of Trump, floated the idea of a unilateral GOP move, saying he would work with McConnell to allow the Senate to proceed without the two charges against Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Why lying about an ‘imminent’ attack would matter, Jennifer Rubin, WaPo

This is a case in which we would wise to remember the lessons of the Iraq War and ask serious questions about the intelligence, planning, downsides and risks of military action. The decision to escalate military action against Iran, a country far more sophisticated in modern warfare (including cyber-terrorism) than Iraq, should prompt more caution, not less, than the decision to go to war with Iraq. Among the questions to be asked: Did the administration consult with Iraq to ensure the move would not trigger expulsion of U.S. troops in Iraq?

I’d quit, and if I had retirement and didn’t have to go into the Republican Industrial Complex, would say I had enough of Trump. What’s the point in staying if you are only going to be a rubber stamp and toady for Trump? No incentive could be worth that. And as for letting a Democrat take my place, so be it.

The thing is, what made the muslims fear and respect the PCCTS was their discipline, fighting skills, strategic thinking, and some other factors. None of which the alt-right wannabees have.

Then we also have the legends about The Order. What if it actually just went underground? Then it would be unwise to use their symbols for ill. And the PCCTS would be one organization I do not want on my six.

And speaking of polls, I wonder what public opinion is actually going to think of Trump’s actions re Soleimani/Iran/Iraq? I realize it’s too soon to get accurate polling (at least I haven’t seen any) - and I’m just as sure that public response is going to vary greatly with the wording of the polling questions, like:

Do you approve/disapprove of President Trump blowing up the World’s Evilest Terrorist?

or

Do you approve/disapprove of President Trump violating international law to provoke a war with Iran?

Sorry, back to Little Women, but a couple of years ago I got hold of a booklet that one of my cousins did of letters (originals copied in color so we could see the shade of the paper) and transcriptions between my great-great grandfather and great-great grandmother that they exchanged while he was fighting for the Union at Chickamauga and she was trying to hold down the farm in western Illinois (there’s still a town there named after him). It was about half news and half instructions about who to go to if she needed to sell some cows or corn to get through a certain month. So many families led by women in times of war. The movie lets you know the cost without dwelling on it.

Ironically, a couple of my mother’s ancestors from Georgia also fought at Chickamauga on the Confederate side, but we don’t have any such letters as far as I know. Her mother was was from Lookout Mountain on the Georgia side.

Small bit of good dog news.

Our country neighbor’s old collie wandered off and didn’t come home Friday night. We searched for hours with flashlights and dog nose through the woods, with no result. Next morning the crew trimming brush at the other neighbors property said they had pulled a dog out of the mud down at the creek. The dog’s owners were working, so armed with a sheet and towels, we walked about a half mile and collected an old cold muddy collie, rolled him into a sheet hammock, and hiked him onto less muddy ground, then a drive home to bake under a heat lamp. Out neighbors called us today to describe the dematting/demudding/haircut.

Technically, the “I was following orders” defense doesn’t hold water at the Hague, so I’m going to guess that the answer is that even if they don’t according to US law and custom, they probably should do it anyway. Better to get fired from the military than arrested and tried before an international tribunal for war crimes.

I grew up in Champaign, but lived for a few years in Quincy for my dad’s work. A lot of my cousins farmed from Adams county through to south of Peoria. But none do now. As you well know—big ag took over. My grandmother’s sister’s farm had a great iconic round barn in the area.

When I was a child, and we first moved to Champaign, there were several round barns, and we lived with that wonderful big one at the west end of town. It was a pony farm then, and I was in heaven! Later they tore down that magnificent house (it was fantastic) and made the round barn into a restaurant. I used to love to play in it, and play with the ponies. Sigh!

My great aunt’s round barn was about a mile away from the homestead. Every fall we had a family reunion and made apple butter on a grand scale. The barn at the farm was a great place to jump in the hay and play with semi-feral cats, but the old round barn was where—in the late 1970s and early 1980s—the cousins went to pass a few joints around while the elders tried to teach the kids to churn butter.

Trump’s totally fucked up things with Iran, and we are learning that Pompeo has been the one pushing to go after Suleiman for months but finally got enough people out of the way to convince Trump to do it.

What the fuck for? He was busy lying that it was an imminent threat? That clearly is bulkshit when Pompeo has been at this for months.

It clearly wasn’t an imminent threat. It was about fucking up things so badly that we have a war and someone gets their religious beliefs fulfilled in hellfire.

That’s what this is ultimately about and Trump’s the vessel these religious extremists are tied to. This is his last bastion of support. They don’t want peace. They don’t want anything other than the End Times, and Trump’s pushing them right to that brink.

Of course, when there’s war, it’s not like they’re the ones paying the price. It’s always someone else. And they wont pay the bill.

How fucked up are things? There are media outlets talking about how Trump’s idiocy might force a restart of the draft.

Considering that we don’t have nearly the size force that we did during the Gulf War, aren’t likely to have any European assistance, and Trump’s likely going solo, the odds of a draft are still low - mostly because the military knows how costly and difficult it is to do a draft and to train people to the necessary standards for combat.

Trump acted without thinking. That’s the hallmark of Trump. His cult believes anything he does, if only because they think it gets them closer to the End Times.

Let those fuckers go first. Let them volunteer for this bugnuts insanity. All these Chairborne Rangers need to get off their barcaloungers and go enlist (that is if they could pass the basic entry requirements).

Do we know that the story about Pompeo pushing for this assassination is true? Isn’t it in direct conflict with the allegations that the assassination was added to the list of options because it was extreme and no one thought he would select it? How do we know whether any of these stories are actually true, rather than fake anecdotes leaked by sources to control the coverage?

246

Because the two things could be true simultaneously. That he was pushing for the option and the best he was able to do was treat assassinating Suleiman as an extreme remote option - knowing that Trump’s dumb enough to go for it because no one knew better or worse - that Pompeo was pushing for it without considering any of the negative consequences to the US, our allies, or the world at large.

You make a good point. We don’t know. On the flip side, these can actually both be true from the perspectives of the various sources. It’s quite possible that.
1. Pompeo has personally been pushing Trump on this for months, while maneuvering to get people who share his opinion into key positions, particularly in civilian leadership at the Pentagon
and
2. The actuall military leadership who prepared the options lists thought this suggestion (or were even told) that this was just a method to get Trump to pick different, less aggressive option.

I wouldn’t say it’s in direct conflict. Six months ago after ordering an airstrike Trump got cold feet just 10 minutes from the point of no return. Pompeo probably has been trying to push for a more aggressive use of force and those key personnel changes at the Pentagon may be how that particular option got slid into the list of response packages. We’re witnessing the steady erosion of professionalism in real time.

In fact it addresses one thing that really bugged me until now, how Soleimani’s name was seriously suggested as a target to begin with.

The decision tree was based on boosting Trump in public opinion. Suleiman looked like an obviously great target on the surface. Who could argue with killing a killer on US troops? the old crude triangulation move. But of course, this self serving approach ignores any and all greater wisdom. Just like Ukraine, just like killing the ACA. Lives don’t matter to this guy. That’s what should put us on the streets in opposition. The whole Don’t Care Do You thing as policy.

A lot of the heartache of the Civil War still echoes down through the ages. And those who talk lightly about any war, or worse, new civil war do not understand what they are asking for.

Unfortunately, my favorite version is not on YouTube outside the paywall. If you have a music service and it has Grey DeLisle’s version of “O Willie We Have Missed You”, please make an effort to listen to it. She won a Grammy for it.

Barring that, here is a more traditional version:

Willie We Have Missed You

Willie We Have Missed You

As the song goes on, you will likely realize it is a song about a Civil War widow thinking she hears her husband’s footsteps at the gate.

The Grey DeLisle version comes from “Beautiful Dreamer - The songs of Stephen Foster” album which has a number of modern interpretations of his songs.

Watching CNN’s reports tonight on impeachment past. The 1974 Republicans put country over party. We aren’t going to see that again — ever — on any issue. So far, except for Rand Paul, the Republicans have not defected from the president on the rush to war nor his bellicose criminal tweets.

Ayn Rand Paul is all bullshit and no action except to continually kiss Trump’s ass!

What a nightmare.

The problem with that image is that it looks too much like a possible image, rather than what it’s trying to show. It’s going to confuse people, and make it that much harder to get through to them what is actually going on.

Generally true — but he expressed a lack of enthusiasm for this latest action:

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., called into “Your World with Neil Cavuto” Friday to discuss the deadly airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Iraq, saying he fears an “escalation” between the U.S. and Iran.

“I think without a declaration of war, without Congress and the American people behind it, what you get is a messy mission. You get a mission of escalating intermittent violence,” Paul told Cavuto. “The president said he didn’t want perpetual war in the Middle East. But he’s adding more and more troops. If you don’t want perpetual war, you don’t keep sending more targets over there.”

This is certainly more of a critique than any of the other Republicans in Washington.

It is not Trump’s ignorance ruining America’s reputation. It is Trump’s hatred of 20th Century style diplomacy, statesmanship, and compromise.

For Trump, victory is personal and an all-or-nothing game. This is what 35% of America stands behind.
