Bolton Is “Prepared to Testify” in Trump’s Impeachment Trial

Politics • Views: 23,335

Former national security adviser and rabid war-hawk Islamophobe John Bolton is now saying he’s willing to testify in the Senate impeachment trial… if he’s subpoenaed.

The House has concluded its Constitutional responsibility by adopting Articles of Impeachment related to the Ukraine matter. It now falls to the Senate to fulfill its Constitutional obligation to try impeachments, and it does not appear possible that a final judicial resolution of the still-unanswered Constitutional questions can be obtained before the Senate acts.

Accordingly, since my testimony is once again at issue, I have had to resolve the serious competing issues as best I could, based on careful consideration and study. I have concluded that, if the Senate issues a subpoena for my testimony, I am prepared to testify.

This could be bad news for Donald Trump, depending on how much ill will Bolton has toward him. On the other hand, it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if he does testify but does his best to whitewash Trump’s crimes.

If Bolton’s willing to testify for the Senate after getting a subpoena, he sure as fuck can testify before the House as to the same.

But this is about pressuring the GOP controlled Senate to allow witnesses, and if he doesn’t testify in the Senate, you can be sure that the House will set up counterprogramming with Bolton’s testimony front and center.

TARP? That’s a successful bailout.

1. I think IWPNT was being sarcastic (“it’s a tarp” is a common Internet joke)

2. This could be a trap, in fact: that Bolton’s testimony could be “damning” to Trump is a pretty common assumption, though with this gang of cretins, the idea of “pulling a fast one” - where Bolton gets up and testifies that Trump did absolutely nothing wrong, etc - and then Mitch McConnell and the Senate GOP rush a vote to dismiss all charges and hip hooray - shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.
Not that they WILL do it, of course: but I’m sure the IDEA has been floated in the WH by some imbecile or other.

His excuse on not testifying to the House is that he needed a subpoena, which Trump was challenging through the courts. It will be the same issue with the Senate.

Yep.

The same John Bolton who probably has had a days-long orgasm over the fact that we are on the brink of war with Iran.

It’s also entirely possible that Bolton would sandbag any potential impeachment testimony if the end result meant Trump staying in power and murdering millions of civilians by nuking Iran.

I think his desire for the wholesale annihilation of Iran outweighs any lingering animosity he harbors towards Trump.

The Niger attack on American soldiers was a direct consequence of Trump’s Muslim travel ban — it occurred after Chad (which was cooperating with us on anti-Boko Haram operations in West Africa), pulled its troops out and stopped cooperating with us after being placed on the list.

Trump’s going to claim success in his claim that he got the US out of Iraq.

Never mind that he was given the boot, or that he ended anti-ISIS operations in a snit, or that he abandoned our Kurdish allies to be slaughtered by ISIS and Turkish forces, or that abandoning Iraq means Iran has greater sway, or that Russia fills the vacuum left by the US leaving (just as Russia entered and took over bases we abandoned in Syria).

This is about Trump branding failure as success and knowing his base wont give a shit either way.

I didn’t see what Gervais did, but here’s an article that discusses it from The Atlantic:

In a generally sour speech—Gervais had earlier emphasized how little he cared about the Golden Globes, and had suggested that Dame Judi Dench licks her nether regions—this was the acid-bomb climax. There was no conciliation, no wink in Gervais’s voice. It’s tempting to call this his moment of moral clarity, and it was likely aimed to be played on loop by Fox News and other outlets that make a habit of questioning Hollywood’s pieties. The passage is so close to saying the necessary thing about those pieties: that they’re often directed at broad causes rather than specific situations stars might actually have the power to change. But Gervais instead devolved into something more incoherent and regressive.

I know a lot of RWNJs are confused about the withdrawal issue because they assumed that Obama didn’t have to respect the agreement on draw-down that the Bush administration signed. He respected Iraq’s wishes and in the aftermath ISIS gained force, so the right blamed Obama for the creation of ISIS (and it was dumb to call them “JV” to be fair). The excuse I was always given for why Obama had “retreated” was that Iraq was obviously wanting us to “renegotiate” Dubya’s agreement and the WH hadn’t taken that seriously. But even if Iraq had really wanted us out, we could just ignore the agreement and their stated intent in the name of “protecting” them.

Following the killing of Iranian military General Qassem Soleimani, Iran has issued an $80 million bounty on Donald Trump’s head.

According to White House sources, Trump is infuriated with this latest move out of Iran. No, not that a bounty was placed on him, but because of the low dollar amount.

“I’m the most powerful man on the face of the Earth and this is all I’m worth?” Trump supposedly said. “They should be talking billions, not millions.”

When Iran’s Supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, heard of Trump’s remarks, he made the “leader of the free world” a new offer. “Show us your tax returns and we will reconsider the bounty offer.”

Unfortunately for Trump, he will not be able to comply with the Ayatollah’s demand as his returns are currently under audit.

Looking at the TPM article, the “honest mistake” according to Milley appears to be that the letter was “poorly worded.” That it’s his insistence that Seely meant to convey that US troops will not be leaving, but will instead be moved to new positions within Iraq.

Or, for those taking notes, Milley is making a valiant effort to keep Seely from being drawn and quartered by a frothing mad CinC.

Civil War medical museum prepares to amputate Confederate flag from logo

While I understand the reasoning somewhat, that museum is a place where I can see having the Stars-and-Bars alongside the US flag, even in the logo, because it deals with the how both sides handled battlefield medicine. This (and places like the national battlefields) is exactly a place where I would expect the Stars-and-Bars to be, because it is history; the matter is just relegating it to history everywhere else, where it belongs.

Edit: After reading a paywall-free version of the story, it’s clearer that the logo is the only place the Stars-and-Bars (and also the US flag) is going away from, due to a now-broader mission.

So I guess IraniansdetestSuleimani is trending (not using hashtag). It’s being used to say the Trump is a hero who won’t be forgotten and the Dems support Suleimani. And of course, it’s being glommed onto by Cernovich and the usual suspects. This stupid world.

Edited: but, hell, if this is a real thing then great. All I’m saying is that the Democrats who actually knew of Suleimani detested him too. They were thinking of consequences.

I checked that out earlier, looks mostly bot-driven.

The Anarchist Daughter of the GOP’s Gerrymandering Mastermind Just Dumped His Maps and Files on Google Drive

The daughter of late GOP gerrymandering mastermind just put all of his files online in a Google Drive for anyone to read.

Thomas Hofeller, who died in 2018, was crucial to the Republican Party’s redistricting efforts across the country: He drew up tons of maps that the party used to make districts easier for them to win — sometimes at the expense of minorities’ voting rights. In an effort to defend their state’s political map in a lawsuit, Republicans had tried to keep Hofeller’s files secret.

But on Sunday, his daughter, Stephanie, who identifies as an anarchist, tweeted them out. She’d announced her plans to release the files last month and has now made them public on a website: thehofellerfiles.com, which links to a Google Drive full of his emails and documents related to his gerrymandering work.

Kids, aged 12 and 13, shot by driver after throwing snowballs at passing cars

Two children, ages 12 and 13, were shot after throwing snowballs at passing cars in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, police said.

The pair was hurling snowballs at passing cars with a group of children on Saturday evening, Milwaukee police said in a series of tweets.
One of the snowballs struck a white Toyota, and the driver of the car shot at the children, police said.
Police found the 12-year-old girl and the 13-year-old boy minutes apart. Both of their injuries were non-life-threatening.
Both children are being treated at a local hospital, police said.

Suspect in custody for Waukesha County Courthouse bomb threat, sheriff’s department says

The announcement of the arrest comes just a few hours after the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department released images of a man labeled as a person of interest and his vehicle.

Sheriff Eric Severson said in a news conference shortly before noon that the threat was being treated as serious. He said there was enough information in the threat to warrant the evacuation.

A Milwaukee County K-9 unit swept the buildings. Severson declined to discuss what, if anything, was found.

The evacuation began shortly after a call was received at a local TV news station, WITI, in which an anonymous caller claimed that “five bombs were placed in the courthouse, and the first one was set to go off at 9 a.m.,” Severson said at the news conference, held in the north parking lot along Moreland Boulevard.

Ayatollah Mystified That He Is the Only Dictator Trump Dislikes

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is “completely baffled” as to why he appears to be the only dictator whom Donald J. Trump does not like, the autocrat said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran, the long-reigning tyrant expressed puzzlement and dismay that Trump had not given him the adulation that he has showered on seemingly every other totalitarian in the world.

“Trump loves Vladimir Putin and Mohammed bin Salman, and he’s even given Kim Jong Un a cute nickname, but, for some mysterious reason, I leave him cold,” the visibly saddened Ayatollah said. “I just don’t get it.”

30%. Between this and chlamydia, the wild koala is likely to go extinct.

The fires in Australia are an extinction-level event. Not just for wildlife, but for the nation as a whole. An area the size of France is burning. 500 million animals or more are gone. Between low population, large land area, and lack of infrastructure, only the cities can really be defended. Any town smaller than 10,000 people or so is simply evacuated and abandoned. And these fires are likely to intensify and continue for the next two months. They will stop when it rains or when there is nothing left to burn.

Australia’s environment has always been uniquely fragile. It is the canary in the coal mine of climate change, which will render it lifeless far more surely than a nuclear holocaust would. It may be the first nation to have its government fall due to climate change - the first of many across the world, which will lead to untold suffering and bloodshed but unfortunately needs to come if humanity is to survive this crisis.

Those are all good reasons to serve vegan food, none of them is why they did though. Apparently they had already set traditional menu and ordered everything and someone at the last moment decided the Globes should make a statement and set an example by going vegan. They sent the kitchen scrambling to develop and source a new menu last minute. OrganIc farming has a much higher soul erosion rate than farming techniques that can use low-till and no-till. And organic farming uses pesticides, they are just not made from petrochemicals.

I don’t know anywhere near enough about farming practices to have much of an opinion. I do know that the assumption of less-harmful farming practices contributes to some people’s decision to buy organic. Personally, I would really like to see less pesticide use wherever possible; I am also guilty of assuming that petrochemical-based pesticides might be more harmful than non-petrochemical pesticides.

Does the soul erosion rate indicate that organic farming is Satanic?

Farmer here:
all of these statements:

OrganIc farming has a much higher soul erosion rate than farming techniques that can use low-till and no-till. And organic farming uses pesticides, they are just not made from petrochemicals.

are strawman arguments.

There is no reason for organic farming to be singled out in that statement because ANY traditional farming technique is erosive.

I am an organic farmer because I do not like using poisons. The statement used implies that non-petrochemical pesticides = poison, which is complete balderdash.

I also use several old-school farming methods that mitigate erosion.

OTOH, if organic farming is Satanic, then I guess I’m a heathen.

I totally get that. There are times when prickliness is totally appropriate. It doesn’t happen to me as much now that I am back in post-production, but when I was teaching I was informed that teacher’s unions are the problem with education, teachers have it SO easy cuz we usually get out early in the afternoon (which is true - but finishing the work I took home frequently kept me busy until 11 pm,) and that it is a terrible thing that the parents of special needs kids try to get them a proper education. Grrrrr.

Worst I get these days is someone insisting that documentaries are not edited - what you see on the screen is the camera running continuously from start to finish. Or not understanding that deceptive editing exists and can be very effective.
