re: #74 The Pie Overlord!

Reagan was a better speaker than Trump even while he had dementia.

He had his acting skills - including learning his lines - burned in to the point where he had to be quite far gone for them to be lost. A good speach writer, and he had several, could make him look good for a long time.

OTOH, Gorbachev found him as easy to wrap around his little finger as Kim, Putin & Xi do with Trump for much the same reason.

Had to go read about it. I am afraid I am more inclined to sympathize with the Japanese in this case. It was not a flag created to symbolize a new and evil movement and there are very negative things that the US, UK, French & Belgian flags flew over as well. Should those flags be banned for those colonialisms and genocides as well?

I have to disagree. The Rising Sun flag is much, much worse than the Confederate flag. Plus it’s not even the national flag of Japan, which is a more apt comparison to the US, UK, French, and Belgian flags.

Would you feel the same if the French were to sport Vichy-era flags?

Even in Koreatown LA the use of Rising Sun imagery is very controversial.

32
electrotek  Jan 8, 2020 • 9:26:47pm

The types of people in Japan that sport the Rising Sun imagery are the equivalent of MAGA rejects in America, spewing anti-Korean epithets and even calling for the expulsion of Zainichi Koreans:

33
William Lewis  Jan 8, 2020 • 9:36:19pm

There are a lot of actual MAGAts here who sport the US flag the same way and would like to see all non-whites thrown out. It also flew over the genocide of the native American tribes. Should the US flag be banned?

I am not saying that Korea does not have serious history here and that emotions can run deep. However the rising sun flag goes back to at least the 1600’s according to wiki. That’s still different than a flag invented for a political movement in Germany or for traitors in the Southern US.

The origins go back to the 1600s, but it was explicitly adopted as a flag of Japan’s armed forces in the late 1800s, specifically marrying the symbol to martial practices of the country. And you can’t exactly blame many countries in East Asia for seeing it as a symbol of imperialism due to Japan’s expansionist campaign up to WWII. Again, it’s not even a national flag, but a military flag. While it’s understandably still a symbol of something else in Japan, there’s good reason to limit the amount of intentional use in an international spectacle such as the Olympics. There’s a reason why anime that’s likely to be localized outside of the country tends to concern itself with things like the Manji symbol (卍), and why video game companies such as Atlus made edits like removing a character’s Rising Sun shoe designs in the game Persona 5 when it localized that game for international markets.

Sometimes, it takes awareness to see what cultural symbols might be taken as outside of one’s country. I mean…as someone pointed out, there’s a good parallel with the Confederate flag, as the one we know it wasn’t even their National Flag, but a battle standard, one adopted likely for that reason as a rallying point for racist activism. Yes, the Rising Sun Flag in Japan has actual valid reasons for use in Japan itself, but it’s also still being adopted by racists for racist activism too, and recognizing that is worth something.

Lindsey Graham is getting the vapors, apparently.

On Wednesday, following intense criticism of the intelligence briefing on the Iran strike by Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rand Paul (R-KY), Lindsey Graham (R-SC) shot back at them ferociously when asked about their concerns by CNN congressional reporter Manu Raju — and accused them of “empowering the enemy.”

“I think they’re overreacting,” he said. “I’m going to let people know … to play this game with the War Powers Act, which I believe is unconstitutional, is that whether you mean to or not, you’re empowering the enemy.”

If they want to fly it in Japan and on military vessels, then I can understand their argument that it is of historic and cultural significance. But flying it in other countries (especially ones that Japan once invaded and occupied) is utterly unnecessary and tasteless.

Dang! There’s racism everywhere. I had no idea that any Japanese flag was so controversial.

Back in the 1990s there was a Japanese female stand-up comedian (can’t remember her name) who told a joke that went something like: “I called my dad in Japan and told him I was dating a black guy. He said, ‘I will disown you!’ So I said, ok, I’m going to date a Korean, and my dad said, ‘I’d like to meet your black boyfriend some day’.

Of America isn’t the nicest place in the world for women either, and the one they’re imagining in their heads that kidnaps women and forces them into grape feeding and other slavery looks like it would give Saudi Arabia a run for its money.

I’ve been saying this for awhile. Trump will have a very hard time getting reelected because its unlikely that the Democratic nominee will be as unpopular as Clinton was (thanks in great part to msm joining with rightwing media in hating on her) and now people know Trump can win if they cast a third party protest vote. I expect third party voting will be way down in this election.

The Qiam 1 is a short-range ballistic missile designed and built by Iran. with a range of 750 km and 500 m accuracy

If the missile used has 500m CEP then that was a lucky shot.

All the impacts seem to be on visible features and none of them seem to have been near US or Iraqi personnel. With 500m CEP that is extraordinarily lucky.

I think the Wikipedia claims for 3m CEP for some Iranian missiles, which seemed incredible at the time, are looking a lot nearer the truth than the 500m CEP claimed here.

Vice President Mike Pence told NBC News that the intelligence justifying the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani was “too sensitive” to share with Congress.

Said Pence: “Some of the most compelling evidence that Qasem Soleimani was preparing an imminent attack against American forces and American personnel also represents some of the most sensitive intelligence that we have. It could compromise those sources and methods.”

Aside from the obvious lie to cover-up
And that’s not how any of this works

I’ll accept this moronic approach
I will:

Prove this.
Prove is will compromise…
that congress can’t keep secrets, like when it debates declaring wars and stuff or natsec

No don’t give up the actual intelligence
Simply prove just what you said

That’s not how it works.

If you have “the most sensitive intelligence” you do not tell people about it. You do not act on it unless you can find some other believable explanation. Churchill let the Nazis bomb Coventry because he could not find any way to pretend they knew about the raid without revealing Enigma.

Just saying “we had the most sensitive intelligence about what Soleimani was preparing” is exposing the source.

AFAICT - and a quick Wiki probe can confirm - it’s the other way round: many (most?) Iranian ballistic missile systems are domestically made, but derived from North Korean designs/originals (NoKo: Arsenal Of Dictatorship). Their origins go back, ultimately, to old Soviet-era weapons systems, but have been continually up-engineered and up-teched. Which the Norks have made into a (?) thriving export business, and which the Iranians latched onto. Their latest generation of missiles are, I think, the Fateh series: SRBMs whose main improvements seem to been to their guidance systems. Which investment seems to have been borne out if the Al-Asad/Erbil attacks are the evidence.

The intertubes are overflowing with inconsistent stories (all obviously uninformed speculation).

This one starts out sounding convincing: Link and claims it was a mix of shorter range Fateh-110 and longer range Qiam-3 missiles. Unfortunately it also says “and at least one was intercepted by air defence systems that cover the bases” which is pretty much bollocks because there were no air defence systems covering the bases.

So I have been informed. Probably something I should have known, but didn’t. Live and learn as they say. :-)

The just showed that their guidance is a hell of a lot more accurate than a 500 meter circular error probability given in Wikipedia for the old SCUD it is derived from. This looks more like a five meter CEP….good enough for individual buildings.

If they want to fly it in Japan and on military vessels, then I can understand their argument that it is of historic and cultural significance. But flying it in other countries (especially ones that Japan once invaded and occupied) is utterly unnecessary and tasteless.

For sure.

I looked at the damage photo at NPR. The stike was not even remotely random, and the missiles hit maintenance structures..a couple of them were dead on bulls eyes. These were not old Saddam era SCUDs for sure. These appeared to have about the same accuracy as a Tomahawk.

No. You would have to have had a spotter with the laser right there. That works OK if you have an aircraft orbiting the area to designate targets as the strike aircraft arrive or a spec ops team on the ground, but Iran had neither here. I suspect it was GPS.

I had read something that said that could have been the case. Nothing definitive, but a plausible explanation. Which I would guess means that they have people on the ground close enough to paint the targets.

BTW. This is my next project. It needs a new battery pack ($1200) and a new after market charger ($600.00). Some work on the door latches and I will have a nifty little EV for getting around town. Fun thing about this EV is that since it is basically a street legal golf cart, I don’t have to have a DL to drive it. Just register and insure. Now I just need to get the company to give me a price. It’s 14 yrs old and has to be 100% depreciated by now.

We call it a Bubble car. If I have to puts plates/tags on it the will be personalized one with BUBBLE1 on them.

The Grindr date charged with murdering hairdresser Kevin Bacon — allegedly slitting his throat before stringing him up from then rafters and eating his testicles — had been stopped a month earlier chasing a half-naked man who was “terrified” at being chained in his basement, according to a report.

Mark Latunski, 50, was stopped outside his rural Michigan home on Nov. 25 as he chased a 29-year-old man who was only wearing a leather kilt, Michigan State Police told The Flint Journal-MLive.

Latunski insisted he was just trying to get back his $300 kilt — but the younger man told officers he fled after being chained in the basement, the report says.

I give it up, for drugs, sometimes for Elaine in Transportation

Watching the evening news in the Ivory Coast from time to time you see a touching ceremony where the president, or maybe his wife or a government minister will present “gifts” of medical supplies to a rural clinic, or maybe an ambulance, or sometimes pickups for the local police or gendarmes.

Welcome to the third world, Americans.

Someone should explain to Trump that we should at least call it NATOXP.

Nah. XP was a good solid system. ME on the other hand, not so much and a NATOME would be a cluster f*ck from the word go.

I’ll wait for word from the Canadian Transport Ministry, though it seems like a good possibility. Makes me ill to say so but I have no confidence in our civilian leadership and not a lot in the military.
BTW, the current Transport Minister is former astronaut Marc Garneau.

re: #202 John Hughes

Project Pluto — for when you are fed up of people saying “hold my beer”.

Damn, I was too subtle:

The 9M730 Burevestnik (Russian: Буревестник; “Petrel”, NATO reporting name: SSC-X-9 Skyfall) is a Russian experimental nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed cruise missile under development for the Russian Armed Forces. The missile is claimed to have virtually unlimited range.

With, for extra Dr Strangelove vibes:

The Poseidon (Russian: Посейдон, “Poseidon”, NATO reporting name Kanyon), previously known by Russian codename Status-6 (Russian: Статус-6), is an autonomous, nuclear-powered, and nuclear-armed unmanned underwater vehicle under development by Rubin Design Bureau, capable to deliver both conventional and nuclear payloads.

The Poseidon warhead can contaminate a large area with radiation. According NukeMap simulations, the size of the radioactive area will be about 1700×300 kilometers. For this purpose, the Poseidon is believed to be equipped with a toxic cobalt bomb, containing cobalt-60.

You’ve obviously never heard of cobalt thorium G!

Luckily we’ve got treaties to stop all this nonsense. (Aide whispers in ear). Oh, uh…

“President Trump made up more stupid shit today. Our panel will break it down for you lie by lie right after these messages.”

Yeah, good f—-ing luck with THAT!

While I usually try not to get too bent-out—of-shape over the pathetic state of our “mainstream” media, it becomes harder and harder to avoid in the Trump Era. I mean, seriously: by this point in time, the orange buffoon OUGHT to have somewhere between zero and less credibility left for virtually ANYTHING he says out loud, or tweets to the public. And yet it seems like nobody - outside lefty blogs, of course - ever brings up the c-word when it comes to reporting on the mindless gibberings our National-Disgrace-in-Chief spouts at regular intervals. “Post-truth reality” indeed….

Kind of depressing when you don’t believe your own government when they tell you that they think happened to the Ukrainian passenger plane.

It isn’t that hard when the thing they are telling you is the thing that makes the most sense.
