If the articles are sent to the Senate next week, is the impeachment going to be finished before the State of the Union? My liver can’t take two hours of trump gloating.

I doubt it. Pelosi I am sure is waiting until after SOTU to send them specifically to dent Trumps ego.

Neil Peart, Rush Drummer Who Set a New Standard for Rock Virtuosity, Dead at 67

Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist for Rush, died Tuesday, January 7th, in Santa Monica, California at age 67. The cause was brain cancer, which he had been quietly battling for three years, according to Elliot Mintz, a spokesperson for the Peart family. A representative for the band confirmed the news to Rolling Stone. rollingstone.com

Hearing the Senate trial may take as little as 2 weeks, so if it starts around this time next week it will probably be done. I seriously doubt Mitch will allow it to go past the SOTU

re: #64 NO SMOCKING GUN!

The fascists are gearing up for civil war in Virginia over gun control.

From last thread…

I suspect that this is more due to the ongoing demographic shift in Virginia than any actual firearms ownership issues.

The urban and suburban areas of Northern Virginia and the Tidewater regions have been rapidly growing. And the longtime power base of the rural areas is rapidly diminishing. Add to that the unpopularity of the current Trump administration and failure of the Republicans to actually govern (as opposed to fight a political and cultural war) in either the National or Virginia State governments for the past 20 years. The result has been the sweeping out and repudiation of the Republicans in Virginia.

The losers are panicking and trying a bunch of different tactics. The threat of physical violence is a traditional go-to in this state. It will be ‘interesting’ to see how this plays out.

Edit - Clarify that it is the Trump Administration who is unpopular.

Asian: 4.69%
Two or more races: 2.62%

The VA GOP is suffering a slow death in this state, and it is entirely their own fault. Like a lot of states slowly changing from red to purple, the VA GOP only really retained any power through gerrymandering and even outright cheating when that didn’t work in their favor. They’ve made no real effort to moderate their stances or draw in new blood, it’s been totally about social warfare and racial dog whistles (“Southern heritage,” anybody?) when they’re not making empty promises about jobs and tax cuts.

Very cool, very normal:

metrotimes.com

An anti-Gov. Gretchen Whitmer group on Facebook devolved into a vile platform that promoted violence against Democrats and Muslims and churned out degrading comments about women.

But on Friday afternoon, the group’s creator deactivated the page in response to questions from Metro Times.

The public group, “People vs Gov. Gretchen Whitmer,” was rapidly growing, attracting nearly 9,000 conservatives of all kinds - elected officials, veterans, firefighters, law enforcement officers, educators, pastors, business owners, political candidates, militia members, blue-collar workers, and your garden variety trolls.

Metro Times identified dozens of recent posts promoting or threatening violence, primarily against Whitmer, U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Elissa Slotkin, American Muslims, and Dearborn. Hundreds of comments were posted each day, and many included vulgar insults against women, Muslims, Democrats, and LGTBQ+ communities.

Tlaib, who is a Muslim American from Detroit, was a common target of the vitriol.

“She needs a bullet between her eyes,” Spencer Hayward wrote.

Carl Wilhelm Sr. posted, “How many teeth you figure you could knock out with one swipe with a baseball bat.”

Mike Nixon suggested, “set that bitch on fire.”

In an exchange about a photo showing Tlaib posing with the Palestinian flag, group members called for the congresswoman’s death.

“Die bitch,” Gerald Carter wrote.

Jeannie Percy added, “I wish someone would find this b**** in a dark alley.”

Tommy D’avignon followed up: “Death to this bitch and her voters.”

These are just a few examples of the hostile comments that fill the grammar-challenged page every day.

“We overflood them with imminent death threats, until it stops, one way or another,” Michael Dearing explained to the group.

The creator of the page, Charlie Gillett, admits the “group has spun out of control” and told Metro Times he shut down the page to avoid repercussions at his job as a machine tool electrician in Sterling Heights if his identity is revealed in this story. (He’s listed publicly as the administrator and creator of the page on Facebook.)

But Gillett had done little, if anything, to stop the threats and posts promoting violence, and blamed the anger on Democrats.

“People promote violence I can’t do anything to stop them. I can block them, ban them, report them but don’t matter,” Gillett told Metro Times in a statement. “Do I agree with it. Some of it no some of it yes. Do I think it gets to far yes most definitely. But for it to stop id have to shut the group down. Then where would people be able to have their voices be heard. Everyone has opinions and not everyone agrees with everyone’s point of view.”

Joshua Doan, who was the group’s co-administrator, told Metro Times he was recruited by Gillett to help launch the page and regrets getting involved. He said he wasn’t monitoring the page closely because his primary role was to get the page started.

“I do not support or align with those people in the group,” Doan said. “The only reason I am an admin is to clean it up. I may not be doing the best job. But I am doing the best I can with the time I have. The group is not a very big focus point in my life.”

On Thursday evening, Doan alerted the group that he would remove racist and threatening posts, which incensed group members.

“Where can I join a militia?” Stacie Rose Laesch responded.

A member provided an email address.

By Friday morning, Doan said Gillett removed him as an administrator, giving him no control to delete threats as they continued to stream in.

“It’s so awful,” Doan told Metro Times. “These people are so scared and uneducated.” [article continues—does not get better]

How does this table deal with “Hispanic” identification? Usually US ethnic-breakdown charts specify “non-Hispanic White” (to classify the caucasians), and “Hispanic (any race)” to differentiate. One would think this would be a big issue in Texas.

Never mind: Wiki has a (sort-of) answer, as usual:

According to the 2010 United States census, the racial composition of Texas was the following:[217]

White American 70.4 percent (Non-Hispanic whites 45.3 percent)
Black or African American: 11.8 percent
American Indian: 0.7 percent
Asian: 3.8 percent (1.0 percent Indian, 0.8 percent Vietnamese, 0.6 percent Chinese, 0.4 percent Filipino, 0.3 percent Korean, 0.1 percent Japanese, 0.6 percent other Asian)
Pacific Islander: 0.1 percent
Some other race: 10.5 percent
Two or more races: 2.7 percent

That’s why they are properly called ‘gun nuts’.

Any reasonable psych evaluation would bar at least 3/4 of these second amendment worshippers from owning guns. That’s one of the main reasons the NRA et al., always oppose such evaluations — they know their membership would be disproportionally affected. Ditto with the red flag laws (e.g., banning gun ownership after conviction on a domestic violence charge).

Dunno if y’all have seen this story from Nicholas Kristof about the Knapp family in Oregon.

It’s a fucking doozy.

He goes back to his roots and traces what happened to a white working-class family in a place not all the distinct from where I grew up.

“… today about one-quarter of the children on that No. 6 bus are dead, mostly from drugs, suicide, alcohol or reckless accidents. Of the five Knapp kids who had once been so cheery, Farlan died of liver failure from drink and drugs, Zealan burned to death in a house fire while passed out drunk, Rogena died from hepatitis linked to drug use and Nathan blew himself up cooking meth. Keylan survived partly because he spent 13 years in a state penitentiary.

Among other kids on the bus, Mike died from suicide, Steve from the aftermath of a motorcycle accident, Cindy from depression and a heart attack, Jeff from a daredevil car crash, Billy from diabetes in prison, Kevin from obesity-related ailments, Tim from a construction accident, Sue from undetermined causes. And then there’s Chris, who is presumed dead after years of alcoholism and homelessness. At least one more is in prison, and another is homeless.”

32
Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)  Jan 10, 2020 • 3:34:07pm

So yeah, like my relatives in Northern Wisconsin, these are people who are deeply, deeply fucked. They are too stupid to figure out that the shysters & con men they’ve been voting for for 40-odd years so far are the ones that have been fucking them up the ass.

They just know that they’re fucked, and they’re casting about for causes. Mexicans and liberals is what Fox News tells them, and everybody in their threadbare and shitty churches nods & agrees with this assessment.

So they voted for Trump, as a kind of “Hail-Mary Pass,” hoping that this would somehow bring back the union jobs and small town hardware stores that used to provide them with a decent living.

Part of me is so fucking angry that I just want them all to die.

They are obligingly poisoning themselves to early graves, and I’m not sure how to feel about this.

Wow, that’s an amazing article. Big money quote highlighted:

Even in this presidential campaign, the unraveling of working-class communities receives little attention. There is talk about the middle class, but very little about the working class; we discuss college access but not the one in seven children who don’t graduate from high school. America is like a boat that is half-capsized, but those partying above water seem oblivious.

Yeah, that hit me too.

I read the obits and I keep seeing names of people I went to school with, blowing their heads off, or dying of untreated diabetes/liver failure/kidney, all brought on by numbing themselves off to the hellscape that is Reagan’s America.

It’s fear.

It’s absolute fear that nonwhites may have power in the US.
It’s fear that white guys will be in the minority at some point in the future.
It’s about angry white guys so fearful that they will hold on to power at all costs, even lying to themselves and everyone around them about their intentions.

And lest we forget, the wall works to keep those who are here illegally inside the US. They can’t cross back. And the wall doesn’t address the millions who overstay visas after entering the country lawfully.

What finally forced my hand and made me go in for a sleep study:

A new study has revealed that people with obstructive sleep apnea or those who snore at night are more at risk of dementias and Alzheimer’s disease. It has been noted that these individuals may have a high accumulation of the toxic protein tau in their brains. The area involved in these depositions is usually the one which is vital for memory, time perception and navigation.

A hefty percentage of that “white” would be “hispanic” because nonhispanic whites are a minority in Texas now.

Non-Hispanic whites are a plurality, not a minority. Slight difference. And there’s enough white hispanics who relate more to the “white” than “Hispanic” part of their ethnic identity that it is probably still a functional majority

Hi.

My wife says if she had designed a Website as poorly as the Illinois Tollway system, she’d have been fired on the spot. (It employs what I call “user antagonistic” elements.)

Leaving Chicago, because of poor signage, I missed the toll plaza leaving I-294 shortly after entering I-88 West. (I wound up blowing through the EZ-Pass lane.)

At the next toll plaza, I told the toll collector I’d missed the previous plaza, and she handed me an instruction form on how to redeem the toll I did not pay. It recommended using the accursed Website, but also offered a form to fill in giving the details of your registration, time, &c so you could mail the toll.

So today I wrote a giant $1.50 cheque and put it in the mail.

I’m still recovering from the flu.

Oh God, this guy has started up his own shtick within Charismatic Protestantism. It’s all about “the courts of heaven.” Basically, it’s not enough to just pray to God/Jesus to forgive us, we have to do battle in the courts of heaven. While this isn’t Henderson, this is a fairly succinct description of the *crazy* from another guy, Doug Addison.

The Courts of Heaven operate similar to the legal system we see on Earth.

Because of all the injustices happening in the world, God is releasing new revelation about gaining justice through the Courts of Heaven. The Cross of Christ is our verdict but there are times we need to enforce this by entering into the justice system of God. We operate in the Courts of Heaven through prayer and an intimate relationship with the Lord.

And just like here on Earth, there is more than one type of court in the Courts of Heaven. You might be wondering: which ones are accessible to us?

dougaddison.com

Anyway, Henderson, Addison and the rest have created their own version of human legal courts, and they’ll sell you ways to work those courts to our favor. (Henderson’s got a raft of books, Addison will sell you how to become your own prophet.) It’s all magical mumbo jumbo. And yes, I know that religion in general can be called magical mumbo jumbo, but the *irony* of this is how these very same people will tell you how the Bible is inerrant but in the next minute they’re talking about an elaborate system of courts of heaven that can’t even be found in the book they claim is without error and complete. *sigh* Might as well get my chakras scanned.

Why? Because Democrats have hurt his feelings by not bending the knee.

Dad crossed over the Rainbow Bridge 18 years ago yesterday. Just been down in the dumps thinking about Dad. Oh if he was still around he’d be out in the streets marching against The Heinous Anus.

Sunday the 12th will be a hard day to get thru because that was the day of Pop’s funeral while a dysfunctional family feud was well underway. That day was the last time I walked all around my home town because I knew it would be the last time I would ever be there…

Today been remembering the Raggedy Ann and Andy bedtime story Dad would tell me when I was ill as a kid. If only I had a tape recorder going when he told it…

There is a huge and dumb conspiracy theory surrounding A=432 cycles, involving Nazis (no), New Age “natural vibrations” (no) and a whole host of other crap.

If you Google “432 Hz”, you will find a tremendous number of articles and YouTube videos about the tuning A = 432 Hz and its presumed healing and soothing properties. If you dig a little bit deeper, you will also find an “explanation” of this phenomenon. Presumably, the 432 Hz tuning is in some way tuned to the vibrations of nature itself, whereas the 440 Hz tuning was introduced by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda.

Yes, that’s right. There are millions of people in the world who believe that Goebbels introduced the tuning to make people feel more anxious.

Now, why should 432 Hz be so great? According to proponents of the theory, the number 432 has special properties. And, indeed, it is an interesting number. It is a sum of four consecutive primes: 103 + 107 + 109 + 113. It is exactly three gross, where gross = 144 is a traditional unit. An equilateral triangle whose area and perimeter are equal has the area of exactly the square root of 432.

Then you will find many mystical arguments, such that there are 432 Buddha statues on Mount Meru, or that it is somehow related to the location of chakras. There is even a claim that scientists at Nike found out that the best golf balls have 432 dimples…

The best part debunking the 432 cycle assertion being “spiritual”:

However, in the 1940s, scientists discovered that the speed of rotation of the Earth is not constant (due to various tidal effects), and the second was eventually redefined as “the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom”.

So, yeah. The 432 Hz tuning, the divine tuning of nature itself, is ultimately defined as one vibration per 21279240.2083 periods of radiation of an uncommon chemical element. Very spiritual, indeed.

I didn’t expect this to happen: they were “sanitizing” the scene for days and have now admitted they were flat out lying. They kinda sorta blame the crew for “turning towards a sensitive military center”, as well as US adventurism, but the Iranian president and military apologized.

My guess is that there will be a significant anti-Trump vote due not because of his crimes or fuckups or evil policies, but because they’re just sick of the fucking constant drama.

This also leads into my little theory of why support for Biden is higher than most people thought: because he looks like the guy who will take care of business and not screw with everything, so the country can take a goddamn breather and not have to think about the fucking President every twenty minutes.

Unfortunately I think that we need a Democrat in charge that *will* mess with things. A lot of damage needs undone, and also there’s a lot to fix that the current administration has made clear needs to be adjusted at a minimum.

And a “we can work together” approach like Biden seems to be basing his campaign on will result in the GOP entrenching all their gains as the new normal.

re: #130 Anymouse 🌹🎃

The article doesn’t mention this, but it was in fact one of Lyndon LaRouche’s pet theories, which he also used as a tool to recruit unsuspecting musicians into his movement(s).

It’s actually typical of the way many cult theories/movements operate: starting with some facts or intuitions that may or may not be valid, at least partly (there *are* good historic and aesthetic arguments for a slightly lower pitch, one of these being the lesser strain on classical singers’ voices), they build an all-encompassing, all-or-nothing, with-us-or-against-us system: the LaRouche movement went as far as to promote a bill in Italy that would have mandated what they call the “Verdi pitch” for all State-sponsored musicians and orchestras, with hefty fines for “offenders” and even the confiscation by law enforcement of all “non-Verdi” tuning forks… The way tuning evolved through centuries (and the fact that it became more or less fixed at A=440Hz only recently) actually makes a case for diversity and case-by-case experimentation, for greater creative freedom - performers could choose the “best” pitch for their particular interpretation of a piece, specific orchestras could adopt a slightly lower or higher pitch depending on the mix of color and brilliance they want to achieve. Instead, conspiracy theorists advocate for a totalitarian solution mandating a “natural” pitch (arbitrary at best) for all, and backing it up with loads of pseudo-science and numerology.

It’s been a pretty mild winter so far, at least in my region of Moravian Silesia.

Good to see that Iran fessed up - a lot of people (here and elsewhere) correctly recognized that it was an accidental shootdown, and most likely caused by a lack of communication between ATC at Khomeini International Airport and Iranian air defense forces.

To this day, the Russians refuse to acknowledge they accidentally shot down Malaysian Airlines #17.

The Iranian government may have figured that the jig was up:

Oman has announced culture minister Haitham bin Tariq Al Said as the new ruler of the Gulf Arab country, ending the mystery of who would succeed Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The announcement on Omani state television was read over footage showing thousands gathered in the capital, Muscat, for the funeral of Sultan Qaboos, who ruled the country for 50 years and did not have any children.

His choice of successor was a closely-guarded secret believed to have been known only to the sultan.

Looks like Tsai Ing-Wen has been re-elected as Taiwanese president.

Tsai Ing-Wen has been re-elected as Taiwan’s president, as voters delivered a sharp rebuke to Beijing by choosing a leader who had campaigned on protecting their country from China.

As results came in on Saturday following a quiet day of voting in schools, temples, and community centres across the island, Tsai, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), quickly established a lead over her opponent, Han Kuo-yu, of the Kuomintang, which promotes closer ties with China.

“With each presidential election, Taiwan is showing how much we cherish our free democratic way of life and how much we cherish our nation,” Tsai said in her victory speech in Taipei.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy more deserving prick:

Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican and staunch ally of President Trump, pushed other Republicans to vote in favor of limiting Trump’s authority in the military confrontation with Iran, drawing ire from the president and other Republicans in Congress, according to aides and emails.

“Reclaiming Congressional power is the Constitutional conservative position!” Devin Murphy, Gaetz’s legislative director, wrote to all Republican offices around 11 a.m. Thursday, underlining the text, according to the email obtained by The Washington Post.

The message, arguing for Republicans to buck the president, ended: “We WILL be voting in favor of H. Con. Res. 83, and hope you will do the same!”

It was a risky move that surprised the president and showed rare fissures in a Republican Party that Trump has firmly controlled. Trump fiercely complained about Gaetz after aides informed Trump that his office had sent the email backing the resolution, which was pushed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Trump’s team lobbied heavily against the nonbinding resolution.

28 years since my dad passed. Christian church wouldn’t allow service because he died of AIDS.

$%^&!@#. One of my law school classmates died 30 years ago in September of AIDS. He was clerking for an appellate court. We had to remain quiet about his cause of death (officially put off to a heart attack) because one of the judges on the appellate court was one of the architects of the Southern Baptist Convention’s “conservative resurgence.” We didn’t want Buddy to become an object lesson in one of Judge Paul Pressler’s sermons.

That said, the last few years have been kind of hard for Judge Pressler. He was sued a couple different ways by men who claimed he’d sexually harassed them, or worse. I’m not sure of the status of the suits, I think they may have been dismissed due to the statute of limitations. The guy he ran with in chasing out the liberals, Paige Patterson, lost his position as President of Southwestern Baptist Seminary in 2018 after it became excruciatingly clear to everyone (not that it wasn’t but it needed the press to expose this) that he had covered up rapes and other abuse at SWBTS. Oh, and the lovely stained glass pictures of Pressler and Patterson that Patterson had solicited money for and was having put up in the SWBTS chapel…they have been removed.

Ships loaded with explosives were used as far back as the 1500s, while various jury-rigged bombs and mines were used in our own Civil War, such as at the naval battle of Mobile Bay and the land battle of Petersburg. Even the “new” version of IEDs — whose explosively formed penetrators can pierce even the armor plating of the U.S. military’s mine-resistant vehicles — actually dates back to World War II.”

National Geographic: In the Alaska-Yukon wilderness, wildlife crime fighters face a daunting task
There is growing need to patrol this wildlife-rich expanse, but resources are scant.

Vanda Felbab-Brown, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, a public policy think tank in Washington, D.C., says she’s “become concerned that the U.S. and North America are about to experience significant increases in poaching and wildlife trafficking, including as an outcome of decisions made by the Trump administration.”

These, she says, include stripping refuge managers and others of their law enforcement capabilities while simultaneously repealing rules and deregulating hunting. In Alaska such rules had prohibited the shooting of wolves and pups and hibernating bears and their cubs in their dens, using dogs and bait to hunt bears, and killing swimming caribou from motorboats.

My accountant and I do a calculation for estimated taxes when I file my returns in March. And then we sit down in early November with my investment summaries for the end of October and check whether we need to make an adjusted payment in January. She (the accountant) takes the results from 3/4 of the year and projects from that what the annual income can be expected to be.

re: #316 bratwurst

We have seen some remarkably bad behavior on the part of political candidates in recent years, but this is really among the shittiest things I have ever heard.

I saw this earlier and was talking to a friend of mine who lives in MO. I said that MO doesn’t get enough credit for the batshit crazy that happens in the state.

WOW! A one man Jonestown. May it become a trend. (Yes, I know it’s unlikely but we can hope.)

Yes, it was 60 here on Thursday, and nasty as all get out after that. So that is coming your way from Illinois!

I often forget that Limbaugh is still lurking around out there. Trump has really taken the spotlight off people like Limbaugh since people can now mainline hate directly from the president. They don’t need the spin provided by the AM hate-fest spin.

This describes my relationship with “El Rushbo” as well. During the Obama years I would catch a segment or two a few times per week just to get an idea of the talking points that had been distributed to various AOL inboxes the night before. Now I get the same information just following Trump on Twitter, so I don’t even bother with Rush at all.

He recently extended his deal with Premiere (I am still amazed that as recently as 10 years ago we had people here who believed Rush owned his own platform, that “EIB Network” was actually a thing!). The fact the numbers for these things are no longer disclosed tells you he makes way less per annum than when he trumpeted the fact he signed a $400 million dollar 8 year deal in 2008. Even so, he is still paid a LOT of money. If Premiere winds up making only $100 dollars per hour on advertising that is still WAY better than having to re-invent middays completely, a daypart that barely generated a penny for the industry before Rush.
