On Fox News, Trump Brags About Turning the US Military Into a Mercenary Force

Politics • Views: 24,155

MP4 Video

I don’t know why this hasn’t caused more outrage; maybe the average Joe or Jane doesn’t understand how incredibly damaging it is that the president of the US is turning the world’s largest military into a fight-for-hire gang of mercenaries, while encouraging and pardoning war criminals.

He had the chance to produce witnesses and evidence. He did not. He was lawfully impeached and he should be lawfully removed and then criminally indicted for high crimes.

Why should he be stigmatized? It’s not as if he were an unnamed co-conspirator in a criminal case against his personal lawyer, or that his campaign managers and advisers were in jail or that he had just paid out millions in settlements for fraud cases involving his university and his charity!

And again, I repeat, the man never wanted to be impeached, he wanted to be “acquitted.” The fact that impeachment cannot be done away with, that his name in the history books will have the same asterisk next to it as Bill Clinton’s, is hollowing him from the inside out with each passing day.

The same as he is now: Bitching and whining that the House Dems have no authority to do so, that it’s totally unconstitutional, and whatever else burbles from Faux. Don’t be surprised if they try to claim that impeaching him again would be “double jeopardy” and thus totally against the Constitution.

But really, don’t expect any more articles of impeachment at this point. Ukraine was really the perfect storm, the perfect set of circumstances and facts that made it impossible for moderate Dems to argue it wasn’t worth pursuing. Unless there is some major breakthrough in the next 6 months, any further talk of impeachment after the Senate has their “trial” will be met with “If you want him gone, vote him out.”

I just don’t see it. Personally, I still believe that Pelosi only pulled the trigger on impeaching him over Ukraine because of fear of a leadership challenge if she didn’t. That she’s handled it as well as she has doesn’t mean she supported impeachment, only that once she’s set upon a task she will see it through to the best of her abilities.

Horrible story.

And what makes it worse is that even after the 1988 discovery of Clark’s letters, historians still seem to have been slack in correcting the record, and were still simply repeating the received “facts” that Clark “freed” York after their return from their Western expedition. Though that “fact” (given that slavery was a high-value property transaction, and, even 200 years ago, usually thoroughly documented) should have been easy enough to disprove.

But of course, RW “intellectuals” keep telling us that we don’t need journalistic endeavors like the NY Times’ “1619 Project” to keep “harping” on slavery and racism….

I disagree. I think she dreaded it, certainly, and wanted to make sure that he had really stepped in it before she pulled the trigger. Of course she wants him out of there, yesterday! Any thinking person would, and she knows a lot more about the damage he is doing than we do.

Yes. The whole thing is just sickening. If the article said, I missed it, but it sounds as though he sold York’s wife away before the trip. To owe your life to someone, and then to beat them if they want to join their wife, it is just more than human sensibility can handle. I will never think of either Clark or Lewis (who encouraged Clark not to free York) well again.

And historians today? A pox on their houses if they perpetuate such a falsehood.

IMO that she sees him as the best advertisement against the GOP in November, that having him on the ticket will do great damage to the party at all levels. And that impeachment is the means to remove him, but instead another mark that will count against him when the voters go to the polls.

With a Republican Senate, she knew that the complicated narrative of the Mueller Report would not hold the public’s interest. She knew that the GOP Senate was never going to convict — if they had any loyalty to this nation, they would have removed him themselves when they still held the House for his rampant violations of the law and his subservience to Putin. So she needed a story that was simple enough for the average person to understand to get their support for impeachment, even knowing that the GOP would never convict. The Dems have to make sure a large enough majority — in the right states — shares their view and will vote the GOP out in November.

York’s wife was a neighbor’s property. The neighbor then moved to a different city, taking her along. That part of the story isn’t Clark’s doing.

From that WaPo article by Jennifer Rubin:

“One of the most common tools of autocrats around the world is to use law enforcement as a weapon to go after political opponents,” explains Ian Bassin, executive director of the nonpartisan organization Protect Democracy, which has litigated against Trump’s unconstitutional actions. “That this misguided investigation has been brought to an end is a sign the walls of our system are still holding; that it was allowed to happen at all is a sign that Trump’s constant pounding at those walls is producing cracks.” Bassin adds, “With a president who has boasted wrongly that he can do ‘whatever he wants’ with the Justice Department, we can’t afford to just hope that sanity prevails the next time — and there will be a next time.”

When asked if Giuliani would be on the legal team that tries the case, [Former federal prosecutor Cynthia] Alksne laughed and said, “no.”

“The people at the White House Counsel’s Office know better than that,” she explained. “Rudy Giuliani just gave an interview to New York Magazine, and he forgot to zip up his pants. No one is going to put this guy in charge of anything.”

I want to laugh it off too, but Trump never let incompetence stand in the way of his sycophants going to ridiculous lengths to defend him. If Giuliani continues to bend the knee, he’ll be able to worm his way into the Senate trial. The Senate trial will not include the poo-flinging that dominated Republican efforts in the House event. We’ll see concerned looks and furrowed brows by the likes of Susan Collins, Mitt Romney, and Rand Paul who will then vote for acquittal. But Trump wants the poo-flinging, and Rudy is his man.

Anyone who actually likes American Football, I hope you’ve been watching the KC/Texans game. That is one insane 1st half.

Big time. My oldest son and I have been texting during it. He lives in San Antonio and is a sports writer for MSNBC sports online. He of course leans towards Houston where he was born but he understands how quick KC can score. Here is a screen shot of our conversation starting when Houston was up 24 - 0 and the Chief’s had just had that great kick return.

34 unanswered points (5 TD with a missed PAT) by Kansas City. Down 24-0, they scored three straight touchdowns in 3 minutes and 21 seconds. As a lifelong Houstonian and fan of Houston sports, I grew up with the Oilers. In 1993, the Oilers had a 35-3 lead at halftime on the road against Buffalo in an AFC divisional playoff game. Star Bills QB Jim Kelley missed the game, and second-stringer Frank Reich (now the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts) led the most incredible comeback in the history of the NFL, with the Bills winning 41-38 in overtime. I remember it like it was yesterday. These meltdowns are a part of Houston sports DNA.

OFFS. “Damn” has been allowed to be in TV and film for almost 80 years now.

I recently saw a restored version of the 1958 BBC serial “Quatermass and the Pit”, and was quite struck by how an evening drama of it’s time was so casual in its usage of words like “damn” and “hell”.

Fast forward half a century, and you have Doctor Who under showrunner Russell T. Davis, and seemingly in each episode there’s at least one line where someone’s asking “what the HELL is going on”, and, although I love RTDs era of Who, it almost seems quaint and forced by comparison.

I had a discussion with my brother yesterday about Harry and Meghan. First of all, I was surprised he was following the story. Second, I was surprised about his opinion, which was basically that Harry and Meghan were doing the absolute right thing for their family. In his mind, getting away from the paparazzi harassment and the racism is just the right thing for them to do. He particularly applauds Harry for putting his wife and son before the royal family. He does acknowledge the issue with security, but “that can be worked out. These people have plenty of money.”

Frankly, I think Harry and Meghan should tell the rest of the royals, “I (Harry) have PTSD from the decades of attacks by the tabloids. Meghan here is developing PTSD from the same attacks plus the racism. We would prefer not to raise our child in this kind of toxic stew.” And then sit back and watch the astonishment as Liz and Chuck and Bill have a collective fit of apoplexy. I would pay money to see that. (Will have to wait for ‘The Crown’, season 8, I guess.)

Along those same lines, one of my coworkers (black guy from Alabama, moved to Arizona last summer) is completely astonished at how Meghan is being treated. “She’s *gorgeous*. It’s got to be racism to just up and hate on a woman that good looking.”

Lenny Bruce: prescient

You are a white. The Imperial Wizard. Now, if you don’t think this is logic you can burn me on the fiery cross. This is the logic: You have the choice of spending fifteen years married to a woman, a black woman or a white woman. Fifteen years kissing and hugging and sleeping real close on hot nights. With a black, black woman or a white, white woman. The white woman is Kate Smith. And the black woman is Lena Horne. So you’re not concerned with black or white anymore, are you?

Still, asshole board member won’t let it go and now the entire board is onboard, as it were. So I got to see a confrontation on my drive out this morning, asshole, handyguy, handyguy’s wife and daughter, nobody happy. If we forget the war he started that left thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead and the torture approved by his administration and his total mishandling of Katrina and the vicious political attacks by surrogates on McCain in 2000 and Kerry in 2004 and we just look at this snippet, Bush the younger comes across as a knowledgeable, thoughtful person. He’s clearly not using a teleprompter — and he appears to be a compassionate, reasonable statesman.

This +100

GWB might be a more articulate and intelligent (even former-) President than Donald Trump, but:

1. That is about as low a bar to hurdle as one can imagine.

2. This fool should NEVER be forgiven for lying this country (and others) into a bloody and tragic war. Whose negative effects we are still seeing today: almost 17 years later.

re: #162 uriel

So sick of this line of reasoning. Wishing economic misery on kids just because I had to suffer through it just seems so peek “got mine/ fuck you.”
