The theoretical realm in which the ethos of the world is collectively held, shared, and developed.

OK then. That works.

Question) Well, why don’t Democrats bring up Rudy and his deadbeat son?

Answer) Because the Corporate Controlled Conservative Press will attack Democrats for picking on poor little Andy and his salary that barely makes ends meet!

Lil drive by-1917 is an amazing portrayal of human endurance and why we must not go to war unnecessarily. How to do a war film that does not glorify war.

A hollow voice says, Guilty, guilty, guilty!  Jan 12, 2020 • 6:40:00pm

Greetings from 10’N, 77’ 31W (halfway between Cartagena and the Panama Canal). Two days of very rough seas (I don’t get seasick, but I spent Friday horizontal), but it’s calmer now. I spent this morning at Cartagena’s National Aviary, with added iguanas, also under siege by ducks. Tomorrow is the Panama Canal transit.

On the “wingnuts and bad words” controversy, “taking the Lord’s name in vain” is the only commandment evangelicals really take seriously. Remember that short of DT saying bad words that caused such a stir the other day? Adultery — no matter, charity fraud, fake universities — they yawn. But don’t say damn, or you’re in real trouble.

To be fair, that’s probably Limbaugh tomorrow as well.

Rush is consistent, if nothing else. Consistently stupid, but consistent.

Hell, last time I heard him, he was still riffing on Mount Pinatubo, and that stopped being a thing like 25 years ago.

What gets me angry is seeing the tuition and board charges at Pitt now which are almost 15X what I paid from 1973-77! Hey I had a total of $8,250 in loans that I finally paid off in 1988. Kids now graduating with $100K+ in debt—they’re NEVER going to get that paid off! I see nothing wrong with Elizabeth’s proposal which is in league with Bernie’s.

I was lucky in that I came out of Pitt in ‘86 with a degree and no debt. My parents had saved some money towards my education (about $10K),. I had a scholarship for my first two years that was worth another 4-5K/year. And I had a job in the library system as well for the last two years where minimum wage at the very least covered my apartment rent and some additional things.

And a few years later the cost/credit there had already almost doubled. And had done so in the medical and engineering schools if I recall correctly.

Some friends are having a harder time, since they live so close to the south and living this up close.

With every bad thing, there’s a good thing. A group of people self organized and went throughout the Puerto Rico picking up donations to transport directly to the communities affected. I saw the convoy and I couldn’t believe the amount of cars, trucks and vans heading to the south. Here are some photos someone took.

isn’t amazing that the Bush Administration that lied to the American public and the world as a whole, have no fucking agency about the Iraq war, but every Democratic Senator that voted for it does, and STILL does and no GOP politician is ever brought up for the same questioning about THEIR votes.

I understand that a good many of us wanted the GOP to be right about this, but the basic facts show that they unabashedly lied about “what they found” and at that time, you’re supposed to support an administration, that regardless of how tenuously they did so, tried to justify THAT war as the needed response to the attacks that took place on American soil. Fucking wrong in every imaginable way but I loathe the absolute double fucking standard that exists when the IRAQ War vote is brought up.

84
Anymouse 🌹🎃  Jan 12, 2020 • 8:51:15pm

Turns out Florida’s poll tax law to prevent felons from registering to vote is backfiring spectacularly on Republicans.

It’s explained why here:

Florida Republicans’ Voter Suppression Efforts Are Backfiring (Goes to Ring of Fire)

Short version: They botched the voter-suppression law which says you have to pay up all court fees and fines before you can register.

There is a loophole in it which says those fees can be waived.

Thus, all Democratic-controlled counties are waiving the fees.

All the court costs, any settlement costs, any lawsuit costs, every single dollar that you racked up in state debt by being convicted. You’ve got to pay all that back and then, then we’ll talk about giving you your right to vote back. That was the law Republicans passed and yes, it made a lot of people angry, but some people instead of getting angry, decided to read the bill, which was probably the better thing to do because they found out that in that bill there’s a bit of a loophole and that loophole is now being exploited by Democrat controlled counties here in the state of Florida and it’s going to come back to bite all of these Republicans squarely on their butts. And here’s what the loophole says, the loophole written into this law actually allows these counties the ability to just forgive those debts, and that’s actually what’s happening right now in four different Florida counties that all vote blue and all by the way, combined account for one third of the total population of the state of Florida.

There are now massive voter drives in Democratic-controlled counties to ensure felons who have completed their sentences get registered to vote.

Because the majority of the republican base still thinks the Iraq war was a good idea. while less than 30% of Democrats do. So especially in a primary it is going to be more of an issue for Dems.

On the issue of “social media influencers,” one of the issues is when they take sponsored advertising and put it in their posts.

On YouTube, you see this as the presenter reading an advert and promoting the product or service.

On Instagram, that can get dangerous. BBC3 duped three Instagram users, with more than a million followers between them, into promoting a weight-loss product which contains as its active ingredient hydrogen cyanide. (The fake product name even incorporated “cyanide” in its name.)

YouTuber Iilluminaughtii gave her thoughts on people who will shill even dangerous stuff without knowing or caring what’s in the product (they are not good thoughts).

I don’t do stuff like Instagram, but people (especially children and teenagers) need education on what product promotion is, and how the people they follow often care so little about them they would pitch cyanide to them if the pay was right.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare announces holistic cancer center partnership (Cincinnati dot com)

doTERRA is an multi-level marketing aromatherapy company which sells essential oils. There is a lot of money in selling woo.

They gave $5 million to the hospital group St. Elizabeth’s as a donation; in exchange the hospital is building a new cancer treatment area in which doTERRA will able to pitch their product directly to cancer patients (that is their stated intention).

They get worse: The managing director of St. Elizabeth’s did an advert with a representative of doTERRA (who in the advert is presented as “a cancer patient”). As Jeff Holiday tears apart both doTERRA and St. Elizabeth’s on the “doTERRA Center for Integrative Oncology” you can see him become visibly angered by this hospital group director teaming up with a literal pyramid scheme, promoting aromatherapy, prayer, and meditative touching as treatment for cancer.

Antivaxxers aren’t the only people trying to kill us: Medical companies are too, by selling us bullshit.

So, Oscar nominations are due later today (Monday) and personally, two films I’d like to see nominated for Best Film, or at very least, Best Original Screenplay, are Knives Out and The Lighthouse - both of which also deserve (IMO), Oscar nods for acting as well.

Two starkly different films, yet both were very well done.

A threat so “imminent”…that nothing was done for years:

But not to worry, Trump took decisive action…back in June:

Trump signed off on killing Suleimani in June if Iran’s increased aggression resulted in the death of an American, according to five current and former senior administration officials, which raises new questions about the justification for ordering the airstrike, reported NBC News.

“There have been a number of options presented to the president over the course of time,” a senior administration official said.

That source told NBC News that aides placed Suleimani’s assassination on the list of options “some time ago.”

So yes, folks, Donny was prepared to take the country to war with Iran for something he’s given Li’l Kim and MBS a pass for.

I’m happy for mundane. I’ve had way too much “not mundane” in my life. I deserve some mundane. Maybe even some boring.

One of the things that did happen after the defeat of the Axis powers is the United Nations embarked on a strategy of decolonialisation. It took some time, and some countries didn’t want to do it (France, Portugal), and some didn’t really give up colonial thinking even though they gave up their colonies (the UK), but generally the trend has been toward more freedom rather than less.

(This is not really enlightening information, is it.)

So, in preparation for Oscar nods, I sat down and re-watched Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, and yeah, a solid flick from Tarantino. Brad Pitt was fantastic, as was Dicaprio, and indeed, pretty much everyone involved, even in the smallest roles (Dakota Fanning was, for me, unrecognizable as Squeaky Fromme and Damian Lewis as Steve McQueen; I had to do a double take as he very much does look like a late-’60s McQueen in the scene at the party at the Playboy mansion).

And yes, it’s historical revisionism from Tarantino - indeed, as the title implies, a Hollywood fairytale, what perhaps we wish could’ve happened instead of the horrific reality of the Tate-LaBianca murders. I can certainly see this film getting a Best Original Screenplay nomination as well as acting nominations for Dicaprio and Pitt, as they both did great work.

re: #23 danarchy

The first snow of the year in DC was days ago. Maybe they were just super slow posting an image of it.

It was about deflecting attention from the fact that East Coast saw temps 30-40 degrees above normal. It hit 69 in NYC on Saturday. It was in the 50s when WH posted that bulkshit snow tweet.

It’s about claiming global warming isn’t real.

And to deflect from everything else we know about Trumpworld, like fact that Trump apparently authorized a raid on Suleimani 7 months ago, which absolutely eliminates the imminent attack justifications given. It was authorized 7 months ago if Iran carried out attacks against the US and our interests following Trump ramping up sanctions and gutting the JCPOA. Trump was intent on starting a conflict with Iran.

That’s the only takeaway here. There was no planning or strategy of what to do next. There still isn’t. They’re winging it and lying every step of the way since Pompeo and Esper spent the weekend lying their asses off about how there was an imminent threat but couldn’t get around the definition of imminent other than fact that Trump is imminently impeached.

158
lawhawk  Jan 13, 2020 • 6:18:36am

Trump’s lying his ass off (I know, evergreen) again about health coverage and his intent to deprive millions of Americans of health coverage, especially the 25% who have preexisting conditions.

If Trump and GOP have their way, 25% of Americans would see their premiums spike, because insurers could then discriminate against them and raise their premiums because they are more likely to use health services.

That means anyone who has conditions from asthma to cancer to hypertension and diabetes could see significant premium hikes - to the point where they could no longer afford coverage.

Yet the fucker lies by claiming it’s Democrats who are going to take their health coverage away.

Media outlets will both sides the fuck out of this - just watch. Instead of leading with Trump lies about health care coverage and preexisting conditions, they’ll blindly tweet out Trump’s claim and later get into the reality.

The reality is that the GOP has spent the last decade trying to repeal Obamacare and screw millions out of their health coverage. They’re the ones fighting to invalidate Obamacare, which would eliminate the protection for those with preexisting conditions. They’re the ones who don’t have a plan for what happens next. They’re the ones burden shifting on to those least able to endure them so millionaires like Trump can avoid more tax.

Then I got a new job and had to quit since we were moving. It was interesting.

Of the folks I worked with, several drove over an hour to work; on the late-night shift a guy drove two hours and had his kids sleeping in the truck while we went searching. After 2008 there were lots of folks looking for any work they could get.

I have to disagree, Repubs do have a plan, because it’s always the same plan: Create a “crisis,” then exploit that “crisis” to obtain that which they cannot get through legitimate means. They’ve never been able to stitch together an alternative to the ACA, mostly because it took their best ideas and what’s left is “free market” BS that does nothing to address the very real need of tens of millions of Americans for affordable access to healthcare. So they choose instead to blow up the ACA, knowing that the result will be absolute chaos, because they believe they can leverage that chaos to get Dems to agree to anything they whip up if only to stop the suffering.

Joker was basically a pastiche/homage to Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. What propels the film is Joaquin Phoenix, who gave a great performance as the titular character and gave us a decent origin story film - albeit, like the Joker, an origin story we can’t be entirely sure is true, as it’s demonstrated pretty clearly in the film that Arthur Fleck/Joker is, at best, an unreliable narrator.

Is it a good story, or just a mashup of themes in an attempt to be edgy without actually being edgy or pushing narratives in a new direction.

If I want to honor a Scorsese film and directing like Taxi Driver, then I’ll honor his current film that does it better. Same with DeNiro.

Is Joker better than most comic book movies? Sure. And that’s the hook. That’s what Oscars are hoping will propel more people to watch.

You’re right
And it won’t work

If we can’t believe in the veracity of Comic Book Lore, what can we believe in anymore?

One thing I noticed is that some of the people who loved that film missed the little clues along the way that hint that maybe the events of the film were all just some fantasy in Arthur Fleck’s disturbed mind, or a mix of reality and fantasy.

It’s not a bad film, per se, but Phoenix’s performance elevated it from somewhat unoriginal narrative mediocrity. Joaquin Phoenix excels at playing disturbed individuals.

I’ve never been one for supernatural or fantasy or sci fi elements. The trailers gave it a very gritty feel to it that I love in the films it was inspired by. Plus King of Comedy is comically underrated.

Ah, yes, his “Kenyan world view”, as if there is something wrong with a nation that violently throws off the British Empire and gains its independence.

But he was just dogwhistling images of Mau-Maus going around hacking up white settles with machetes…

I just watched that trio of films about the Kenya, and Mau Mau was an invention of the colonists, and never existed. (I had not realized it was as faked as it was.)

Buffalo Soldiers is a much overlooked film of his that I stumbled across on a streaming site a while back, set in Germany around the time of 1990’s NATO Operation Reforger, all about the drop-outs, losers and jail-dodgers we had serving in our military.

Of course I think what makes Rupert so pathetic is his isolation from reality but a 2020 Rupert would live tweet his time in Jerry’s house. It’s such a good film because it shows how desperate people are for instant success and fame without having to do the work for it.

I saw it a couple of times, simply because on first viewing, the ending of the film caused me to think that perhaps the events portrayed in the flick were just some kind of wacked-out fantasy on the part of the main character, and personally, I like an ambiguous ending if it’s done well and in the case of Joker, it was done well; it left me wondering what events in the film were real, and what was the product of his deteriorating mental state.

There are transgender men with beards like me who probably have more muscle mass. Does Kaitlin want them in women’s rooms? The right’s idea of transgender people comes from a pathetically informed place.

It must be fucking nice to act like you’re this champion of capitalism and individual initiative but you’re actually nothing but a common political prostitute getting a pretty penny to lie about our economic history. Ben Shapiro, Charlie Kirk, Candace Owens, & Tomi Lahren are cut from the same cloth.

I honestly worry about the kind of damage he might do after he doesn’t have to worry about re-election any longer, even if it is only a lame duck session.

Moi aussi: even in a 1932-style blowout, I’m guessing the Orange Anus is likely to refuse to accept the results, spend his “lame-duck” time obsessively tweeting about how the election was “stolen”, how Democrats “cheated”, how anything and everything is “illegitimate” - and, of course, try to do as much damage to the government and country that he can. In which case, barring the unlikely event that the election of a Democratic President is accompanied by the Republicans regaining control of the House*, he’s going to be limited as to what he can do.
Oh, and despite the inevitable apocalyptic bluster, I think Trump leaves the WH quietly, and on time, after all. I wouldn’t want to take a bet that he actually shows up for his successor’s Inauguration, but I don’t think an Allende-style “last stand” is in the cards.

*Maybe I’m being overoptimistic, but at this point I see the worst-case scenario for the Senate at 50-50. Fingers crossed….

You blocked Pompeo, Bolton, & Mulvaney from testifying. Pelosi not letting you put the Bidens on trial wasn’t denying you your rights, Mr. I still go to lock her up to get a response from my Nuremberg inspired crowds.

I swear. Sometimes I become a Socialist when I look at how little we spend on our people versus the military.

This is just not true. Nearly 2/3s of the federal budget is mandated spending on domestic programs. Medicare, medicaid, social security, federal pensions, unemployment insurance, some SNAP etc. Discretionary spending is split pretty evenly between domestic and military.

The question we need to ask is why we get such shit ROI. The US government spends more per capita on health care(not just for those covered, but per capita) than any other OECD country and yet doesn’t cover everyone and gets worse healthcare outcomes. Medicare needs to be allowed to negotiate prices, period.

We spend more per student on education in k-12 than anyone but Norway and are still middle of the pack in educational outcomes. I have no idea what the solution is here, but it seems to me it goes beyond just spending more.

Fair but the same politicians who insist you can’t spend on social policy also resist any sort of cuts to military spending waste that even the Pentsgon agrees with. The problem imo is we always seek to cut social spending first. And I have a resentment with politicians who get their health care provided courtesy of Joe Taxpayer crying about socialized medicine.

We should turn around the discussion of health care spending. By having it privatized, it is treated as a separate expense than government spending. We should be talking about ALL spending and focus on whether it benefits people, whether it’s government spending or private health care or education.
