UK Defense Secretary: Trump Has Wrecked the Special Relationship Between the UK and US

Politics • Views: 24,350

This is really bad.

UK abandons Trump as US ‘withdraws its leadership around the world.’

In remarkably outspoken comments, UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in an interview published Sunday that Trump’s isolationist foreign-policy stance had prompted the UK to look for alternative allies.

“I worry if the United States withdraws from its leadership around the world,” he told The Sunday Times.

He added: “The assumptions of 2010 that we were always going to be part of a US coalition is really just not where we are going to be.”

If Trump were actually a Manchurian candidate bent on wrecking everything about the United States, I’m hard pressed to think of anything he would do differently.

Note that this is an actual example of the Anglo-American relationship being wrecked, as opposed to the endless whining over the return of a bust that Obama had to endure.

You look at Trump’s tweets today and find yourself realizing that tens of millions of your fellow Americans think this is “strength,” that having the emotional maturity of a schoolyard bully is the mark a great president.

They’re also the same people who thought cling to their guns and bibles was this terrible insult but then they prove it in their actions.

It’s always projection with these clowns. Republicans are traitors just seeking to steal everything that isn’t nailed down, and if a bit of stochastic terrorism helps them stay in power, that’s OK for them.

Naturally, they think Democrats are just as depraved.

“…The Wisconsin Elections Commission in October notified more than 230,000 people it believed they may have moved and asked them to update their voter registrations or confirm they were at the same address. It planned to remove them from the rolls in 2021 if they didn’t act.

Three voters represented by the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty sued, arguing the state had to remove them from the rolls much faster. Malloy agreed and ordered the voters purged from the rolls.

The commission has deadlocked on whether to take people off the rolls as it pursues its appeal. Their inability to take action prompted the move to find the commission in contempt of court.”

Sounds more like Gigi Hadid just happened to be in the juror pool that day: one thing about NYC: they’re pretty ferocious about rounding up potential jurors (you get like NO excuses or exemptions these days): and Gigi probably got called up just by chance.
Though if I were Weinstein’s attorney, (or the prosecutor) I’d challenge her out: I thought one of the basic rules about jury selection is that, despite whatever they say, you NEVER want anyone who knows the defendant on a jury.

McConnell’s goal is to hold 51 seats and thereby control the Senate. 50 isn’t good enough (even with a Republican VP) because the precedent in 2001 would mean sharing too much power with the Democrats. He needs a true majority.

So the calculus he has to do is, ultimately “how do we hold 51 seats come January 2021?”

A motion to dismiss probably hurts vulnerable Republicans in what could be several very competitive states - or may even create a scenario where “safe” seats suddenly become competitive seats. Going through the motions of opening arguments and questions, followed by possibly one or two witnesses, and then a party line (or near party line) vote is his best option of keeping his majority.

We can probably debate the Senate probabilities til we drop from exhaustion, but I’ll just put it out here (and try not to mention it much again til WAY nearer the election), that I think the current indications are that the Dems will likely flip three seats (AZ, CO and ME), and lose one (AL), which would make it 51-49 and mean that the GOP could not lose more than one seat next year to avoid a tied Senate, and two would mean a loss-of-majority. Which situation I’m sure that old McTurtle would try to fiddle the Senate rules to leverage to maximum (R) advantage, but would still severely crimp the GOP’s plans.

Public Citizen today filed an ethics complaint against U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) over his public statements on the pending impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. The complaint, filed with the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics, requests it investigate and determine whether recent public declarations by McConnell violate his oath under the U.S. Constitution as well as the rules of the Senate requiring impartiality. The complaint seeks a determination on whether he should recuse himself from the impeachment proceedings. Source

Great article! I found this neat:

Between 80,000 and 100,000 years ago, head and body lice became separate species. “This is an indication that individuals started wearing skins,” says Sarah Wurz, an anthropologist at the University of the Witwatersrand, who was not associated with the d’Errico study. “The lice lived in these, and therefore evolved into a separate species.”

Exactly. I have a lot of family who love that Sanders supports this and that. They never answer how Bernie who has never been a great legislator hasn’t gotten his agenda passed as Senator and Rep. Therefore they can’t think of a valid reason that he’d be a successful executive. They say they venerate FDR. Well FDR and also LBJ were very savvy politically. You would see longer and more substantial reform under a moderate like Biden than you would Bernie. My concern with Biden isn’t that he’s not able to get laws passed and implemented. It’s that he doesn’t see how the opposition doesn’t operate in good faith at all. Make no mistake, Bill Frist isn’t missed by me but he was more reasonable than the guy who brags about stopping legislation without even voting on it. We need a Senate majority. And Bernie has never seen the importance of that. Warren I feel does and I think Pete does too but I’m afraid Sanders does not and he would ignore down ticket races.

Exactly. I have a lot of family who love that Sanders supports this and that. They never answer how Bernie who has never been a great legislator hasn’t gotten his agenda passed as Senator and Rep. Therefore they can’t think of a valid reason that he’d be a successful executive. And it’s frustrating because they’re not dumb but they just hear Bernie promise the world and think that’s the way to ambitious reform. You want ambitious reform. Build a strong and lasting legislative majority. You’ve seen the fruits of that budding here in Virginia as have I.

Bernie’s never had major legislation with his name on it because Bernie doesn’t really involve himself in the sausage-making that is being a member of Congress. He “takes a stand” not when it’s important, but when the passage of the legislation is assured and so his speechifying against such amounts to a fart in the wind. Next time you discuss him and/or his proposals with your family, ask them a simple question: “What happens when he finally puts a bill forward…and they don’t like it?” It’s easy to put forward ideas during a campaign, it’s a lot harder when you actually have to start putting such to paper. If they don’t understand that, then tell them three words: “Affordable Care Act.”

Lots of people have great ideas. Fewer people can get those laws into law. And that’s why finding leaders is difficult. Sanders’ legislative record isn’t a legit argument to nominate him. I really feel he would disappoint so many people and disillusion tons of people because I really think he would be an ineffective executive and it’s frustrating as hell being a big minority in my generation on that. Maybe I’m cynical in some ways after how ACA got distorted into Neo-Stalinism but maybe we fucking should be a little.

I’m trying here because he is actually paying very close attention to the political process and wants to be involved in canvassing. I have told him to put his heart into it but be prepared that it could get broken. I still think Biden will ultimately be the nominee and I remind him daily that I will vote for Bernie, even though I don’t like him, because anyone is better than Trump. I expect him to do the same.

I also reminded him that Biden is up with the 65 and older vote, as well as African Americans. Those are the people who vote. If the kids want Bernie they’d better grow up and get to the polls. There will be no voting by Instagram or Twitter.

My middle brother likes Bernie. He’s where I was as a teenager. Super idealistic in a lot of ways. He’s educated enough but I think he needs to read more history about how we’ve gotten the radical changes in our history. There’s a lot of people like him and your son who are typically younger and by that, I mean under 30. I want a lot of what Bernie does. I agree completely with Bernie that wealth disparities cannot continue like this but Bernie ignores a lot and I hate the pedestal he puts himself on. I hate saying it to people but it’s Trump like and I fear a lot of otherwise sensible people ignore it since they like what he’s offering.

Bernie Sanders says he doesn’t want a super PAC. Instead, he has Our Revolution, a nonprofit political organization he founded that functions much the same as one.

Like a super PAC, which is shorthand for super political action committee, Our Revolution can raise unlimited sums from wealthy patrons that dwarf the limits faced by candidates and conventional PACs. Unlike a super PAC, however, the group doesn’t have to disclose its donors — a stream of revenue commonly referred to as “dark money.”

Now, with less than one month to go before the Iowa caucuses, Our Revolution appears to be skirting campaign finance law, which forbids groups founded by federal candidates and officeholders from using large donations to finance federal election activity, including Sanders’ 2020 bid….

…[W]hile Warren has come under fire for courting wealthy financiers in her past Senate campaigns, Sanders and Our Revolution have largely avoided scrutiny during the primary, even as he has accelerated his criticism of others, among them Biden, for relying on super PACs founded by their allies.

In the case of Our Revolution, which aims to boost voter turnout for Sanders, the Vermont senator was the founder…

The campaign finance act says groups “directly or indirectly established” by federal officeholders or candidates can’t “solicit, receive, direct, transfer, or spend funds” for federal electoral activity that exceeds the “limitations, prohibitions, and reporting requirements” of the law. Those limits are currently set at $2,800 for candidates and $5,000 for political action committees.

Our Revolution has taken in nearly $1 million from donors who gave more than the limits and whose identities it hasn’t fully disclosed, according to tax filings for 2016, 2017 and 2018. Much of it came from those who contributed six-figure sums.

It won’t have to publicly reveal its 2019 fundraising until after this year’s presidential election. And money it raises between now and then won’t have to be disclosed until the following year…

Exactly. I trust Biden and Warren when it comes to building a team. Bernie? Nina Turner? Tulsi last time? Cornel West? Nixon signed the EPA into existence, and OSHA, and Title IX and Title X. He proposed a universal health care program considerably left of Obamacare (Ted Kennedy said his greatest regret in his senate career was turning it down, because he thought he could get something even leftier.)

It’s the fact that her team leaked it now, after sitting on it for a full fucking year. I mean, if I were a Sanders supporter I’d be pissed too, because it kind of signals a zero sum game, where Warren is calculating that her worst case scenario is she drags Sanders down with her and moves into decent contention for the role of Biden’s VP.

And while nothing about that analysis is wrong, luckily I’m not a Sanders supporter so I don’t give a fuck. Also, he absolutely did say that shit, it’s 100% who he is.

Ditto. I’d also like to see everyone on Team D thinking much less about presidential races and much more about party-building, 50 state strategy, state-level races, and the damn Senate.

Can’t speak for the country, but that’s the way it’s going in my neck of the woods. Oh. Greetings from the other side of the Panama Canal, heading for Costa Rica.

So IOW, China can ( and will) keep on manipulating its currency, and we just won’t do anything about as long as Trump can declare a “ victory”?

Weather Channel.
Animal Planet
Fishtank channel.

My cable system even has something called Dog TV… something for your fur baby to watch all day while you’re at work.

I once had a dog that hated sharks and lions and would attack the big screen TV every time. I had to block out The Animal Channel and Discovery in case he saw one as I flipped through channels.

My roommate’s dog when I was in college LOVED Letterman’s Stupid Pet Tricks segment. If he heard Letterman say that after the break is SPT, he’d come running and park himself in front of the TV. (this is the same dog who used to play solitaire fetch on the stairs. Drop the ball, go get it, drop it again…)

Politico had an article on Trump supporters explaining themselves. It used one remark in its title “He Is Our O.J.” Basically, a riff on “I could shoot someone on 5th Avenue.” It’s like at some level, they’re aware that they’re a cult.

I think a bunch of people got spooked by the backlash against a polished and accomplished black man, no matter how well he did. In fact, it seemed like the better he did the more hate was pumped up. And that hate was rolled up in a ball with everything thrown at Hillary Clinton since she was first lady of Arkansas, and when despite it all, she won the popular vote by a considerable margin, she somehow lost a few northern industrial states with Republican governors by very slim margins. So SOME people are probably thinking it is too soon for a woman or PoC. Gotta have a white man in there again! And I wasn’t against some of the white men in the race either. Just think enough people got spooked to pull back and get cautious.

I mean, that’s basically my read too, but at the same time, it feels like just another regression to pile on to all the other regressions this country seems to rapidly cede itself to.
