We should be glad Trump is so incompetent. Just think what damage would be done if that malicious pumpkin was actually clever.

There used to be people like Don McGahn who would nod sagely and then ignore Trump’s worst ravings. To the extent that any of these people were guard rails, they’re gone. So now it’s two scandals a day of things they not only planned to do but carried out. It’s gotten worse and will only continue to do so. A 73yo narcissistic sociopath doesn’t suddenly find scruples.

On the other hand, it’s an indictment of our institutions that they would allow someone this maliciously incompetent not only to be considered as a nominee for the highest position of the land but to actually run it, even after showing both ignorance and disdain for the basic functions and institutions he is charged with running and defending. And that there’s no real actual functional recourse except voting him out, because of how much bad faith is rewarded in this system.

Last week: “WE HAVE THE VOTES! GIVE US THE ARTICLES OR WE VOTE TO DISMISS!!!”

This week: “Er, um, we don’t have the votes. In fact, Dems may have the votes to force us to hear more witnesses…”

At a press conference, McConnell told reporters that the Senate impeachment trial will likely begin next Tuesday.

“There is little to no sentiment in the Republican caucus for the motion to dismiss,” McConnell said.

The Majority Leader went on to suggest that Republicans would call their own witnesses if Democrats insist on having having new testimony.

“I can’t imagine that only the witnesses that Democrats want to call would be called,” he said.

Some Republicans have said that Joe Biden, Hunter Biden and Rudy Giuliani should speak to Senators.

Y’know, I think Hunter and Joe would be cool with appearing if that meant Mulvaney, Guiliani, Pompeo, and Bolton also had to appear.

2020 presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is calling on financial regulatory agencies to investigate whether President Donald Trump broke the law when he told associates and attendees of his Mar-a-Lago club to expect something “big” in response to Iran’s killing of an American contractor in Iraq…

Now, Senator Warren is calling on the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission to determine “whether there may have been any illegal trading in defense company stocks or commodities related to individuals’ advance knowledge,” according to the letter Warren sent to the agencies, which cites The Daily Beast’s reporting. Warren also asks the agencies for a briefing on the matter no later than Feb. 13.

“Individuals who were guests at President Trump’s resort may have obtained confidential market-moving information,” the letter says. “These private individuals … would have had the opportunity to obtain significant profits simply by being guests or members at President Trump’s private resort.”

Warren’s letter notes that several contractor’s stock prices jumped following the assasination of Soleimani. Northrop Grumman stock prices increased by over 5 percent and Lockheed Martin’s stock prices increased by 3.6 percent, according to the letter.

If one believes that the goal in the Senate is Trump’s removal or to do such damage to him politically as to make his reelection virtually impossible, then getting his inner circle on the stand is worth the possible damage to Joe Biden’s campaign. If this were happening in the fall, weeks after the convention and the nomination, I could agree that it’s not worth the risk. But now? When there’s still a robust field to fill the spot if he’s deemed “damaged goods”? I say go for it.

Yes the emails did the final blow (assuming that the Russians did not change real votes) but Benghazi harmed her in public esteem long before that. They were designed to take down her very high approval ratings of that time. They knew she was running for president and wanted to make sure that she was damaged property.

The company I work for uses both Windows and Linux, and the updates are pretty regular for both.

Windows did go through a period where it was having to be updated frequently, and that was because they had concentrated on releases and features over security. But they got hammered because they were 80% of the OS market. They are more secure, and Linux gets security reports as well.

Agreed, I don’t feel that these fuckers could tie their shoes, much less back him into a corner such that his campaign is irreparably harmed. Not to mention that the trade-off is putting Donny’s goons on the stand and subjecting them to questioning that is only going to further damn him. The political value of watching Mike Pompeo sweat as he either takes the 5th or accuses every one of his underlings of being goddamned liars would outweigh the possible bad press of Joe Biden being asked if his son made some dosh as a publicity hire by a company nobody outside of the Faux echo chamber had heard of before 2019.

I say go for it.

it might come down to who goes first

One thing that Schiff and his staff should do is what they did during the hearings: emphasize that the House’s investigations were not a trial, they were the political equiv of a grand jury. And no court in America, particularly no criminal court, simply rules based solely upon what’s presented at the grand jury.

He also could be seen pulling a knife on a dog and yelling “I will cut this f——— god—— dog’s f——— eyeballs out” while the girl is in the room and pleading with him to stop, the report stated.

I know the answer to that - North Korea nuked by US forces and the fallout spews all over South Korea, Japan, Hawaii, and the West Coast as the trade winds flow.

What Trumpists call preemption, North Korea or Iran or anyone else doing the same thing would be called an act of war and the US would respond with military force. Yeah, it’s the same exact arguments GOP made in support of the Gulf War against Saddam - prevent the bad guys from doing worse.

Putin could not have lucked his way into having a more idiotic and useful admin at his disposal than Trump. The GOP will bend over backwards to do what Trump wants, even when that means screwing decades of US national security, alliances, and partnerships to cede our diplomacy and statecraft that has prevented wider conflicts around the world.

re: #121 Eclectic Cyborg

Pete Rose was kvetching that the Astros deserved harsher penalties for their cheating, and he isn’t wrong.

They should have gotten lifetime bans. The Astros owner has more character and respect for the game than MLB did. The Red Sox should also be getting the same treatment as Cora cheated for them too.

I’d argue “death penalty” for all those involved and wipe out their seasons, but I know that’s not going to happen, which is why I’d go with bans - you mess with integrity of the game like this, and you lose all future rights to be in or around the game.

On the flipside, do other players/teams cheat? I’m sure of it but it’s just these guys who were caught. How is this different than PEDs? One was a team exercise while the other was individual players juicing.

Penalties and the crimes aren’t nearly as spelled out as they should in MLB and it allows for decisions that seem arbitrary - because they are.

The odds are that the plane declared an emergency and needed to return to LAX. The plane probably dumped its fuel where it was within the ATC pattern, which happened to be where this school was located (among other structure).

Not intentional - and still safer than the plane landing with all fuel aboard and potential for crash/fire.

OT,

Yeah. I hadn’t been because I’ve sorta dropped out of following baseball since these past three months have been draining but I decided to read up on it. There’s always been cheating in baseball. The tales of spitballers are part of the game’s lore but this is something that was impacting games potentially. That said, as a former little league hitter, there’s a certain advantage to not knowing what’s coming in some way. Hitting a baseball is a lot of physical rather than mental instinct. Someone compared Houston’s 2017 road stats versus their home and the road stats were actually superior and it’s not like guys like Correa and Bregman emerging as stars was a huge shock. They were highly touted prospects. So I definitely think something needed to be done because there definitely was some impact. The biggest I saw was in stolen base success rate.

“Shortly after takeoff, Flight 89 from LAX to Shanghai experienced an engine issue requiring the aircraft to return to LAX. The aircraft landed safely after an emergency fuel release to reduce landing weight,” Delta spokesperson Adrian Gee said.

So an emergency situation, then. Still seems somewhat careless to spill fuel on a school playground, but not sure how one can avoid it - though an ocean dump would be less-likely to harm humans. Except maybe, some unlucky surfers….

re: #121 Eclectic Cyborg

OT,

Who else here has been following the Astros scandal?

MLB has a lot of skeletons in its closet, so it would seem.

I’ve been following it as a source of humor. MLB has always been a sport of cheats - from the earliest days of Ty Cobb to the Black Sox to the spitball pitchers grandfathered in to the more recent “scandals” like corked bats and steriods it’s always been a sport where “getting away with it” is all that mattered. And it’s not like MLB organization is particularly innocent with the juiced balls being made because they want more home runs.

The Astros won the series and in the end that’s all anyone really cares about. They’ll make that particular cheat illegal and move on. A couple of years or months from now someone else will come up with the next one to win the series with. And then, once again, MLB will be all like the famous Casablanca sequence:

Captain Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault: Oh, thank you very much.

That’s what gets me, Trump is showing in real time just how much of a joke that conservative foreign policy is, yet Rubin is so dedicated to her ideology that she is arguing that it’s Warren that has to prove her ideas will work “in the real world.” Since when have conservatives given a shit about the “real world” when they can instead continue to operate in a Cold War fantasy about how the rest of the “free world” is so dependent upon the might of the United States that they will always take our lead without question?

Hi.

I’m finally starting to feel better.

On the comment, months ago when Jennifer Rubin started sounding reasonable, I pointed out she has not denounced conservatism, just Trump. She’d be just fine with every one of these policies if a sane-sounding Republican President was promoting them.

Several people were not happy with that. Conservatism is a religion, and until she renounces conservatism, everything she writes has to be viewed through that lens.

Jennifer Rubin and others like her are using the conservative version of Christian flirty fishing. She sounds good, with the idea of roping in liberals so she can later present conservative ideas as reasonable.

She is no different than any other conservative pundit out there saying “well if the Democrats just ran like Republicans, I could get behind them.”

There’s the Trump of Jon McNaughton’s “art” which by the way Stalin would want to hire Jon to be his court artist and then there’s the Trump that thinks he’s a genius because he added ME to NATO and thinks NATOME is this brilliant acronym.

Hell, I’ve been saying this shit since Spring 2017, when the sudden fascination with the “NeverTrump” crowd turned into the idea that we needed to be working to ally ourselves with these people, because “we need every vote we can get!” Even then, I rolled my eyes and told them that these people were not converts, they were not “seeing the light,” they were just frustrated that Trump was saying the quiet parts out loud. But no, I was told that we needed to do what we could to work with them, to avoid making them angry, because we couldn’t hope to win at the polls without them.

re: #69 Teddy’s Person

Because I write counter-apologetics pieces and run a forum critical of religion for an organisation, I can see what Jennifer Rubin is doing is no different than a creationist.

Substitute “conservatism” for “religion” and “creationism” for “evolution” it becomes easier.

It doesn’t matter how many holes a creationist pokes in evolutionary theory, that does not get you to “atheism is untrue” (especially since atheism isn’t an ideology) or “God did it.”

Even if the creationist could somehow bring down the entirety of evolutionary theory, they are no closer to proving their assertion.

The same goes for conservatism. It doesn’t matter how many holes Jennifer Rubin pokes in Elizabeth Warren’s position, it does not make Rubin’s position true. Rubin is arguing exactly like a religious apologist.

I’m going to disagree with you there and here’s why. The old conservatives sucked. You will never hear me sing their praises because I feel they’re responsible for the culture of the right that made Trump palatable to their voters and punditry. However, I honestly don’t think a President Rubio or Kasich or Jeb would outright be attacking our system of alliances in the EU and NATO. I think they would alienate them to be sure because of their rigid conservatism and in Rubio’s case outright denial on climate change. And I really hope you don’t read this as a defense of the right’s old guard because it is anything but that but an acknowledgment about why I think Trump in his own way is uniquely dangerous to global harmony and our country’s stability.

Emergency declared shortly after takeoff, plane returning to airport. Dumping fuel before an emergency landing is appropriate and reasonable.

Right. Maximum safe landing weight is lighter than max takeoff weight. This may be a news first, but it’s happened before in the area. And or over the ocean. IIRC there are zero regulations that stand above aviation safety. Long time since I took the FederalAviation Rules test tho!

I think tehre’s a difference between acknowledging their criticisms as genuine (which with Jennifer Rubin, I believe are) and ignoring that they’re wrong about policy (which I don’t think anyone who has acknowledged the NeverTrumpers” as people we want to have as partners or part of our next executive branch) I think there are conservatives out there genuinely disgusted by Trump but at the same time, I think a lot of those conservatives are in a lot of denial about how Trump was possible to something they consider an intelligent and thoughtful ideology. As I got at earlier, Buckley and NRO were defending the virtues of segregation and Apartheid and Buckley a lot of the older ones acknowledge was their introduction to conservative ideology and the one that they said helped make conservatism make sense to them. The man was defending Apartheid into the 80’s. That to me should be a pretty good indicator that he had serious flaws in his intellectual approach.

Where is the defense? Where is the legal precedent that has a President taking away foreign aid unless they investigate his domestic opponent. Yes, Presidents have played favorites in foreign elections. But with Trump, you have a guy who outright threatened to take away foreign aid from a key geopolitical ally unless they investigated his likely opponent. Despite what Republicans say, this is not what happened to Trump. Trump’s cronies were found while the Obama administration was investigating the Russians. And you know what, we would probably know even more than we do if Trump hadn’t obstructed that investigation. Barr’s whole defense of that obstruction is “The president doesn’t like being investigated, he feels it hurts his legitimacy.” Well tough shit. Russia, a foreign power interfered in our election to benefit Trump and there was legitimate evidence that they had some willing help from people in Trump’s circle.

I think we’re sort of talking past each other. Nobody’s saying that the Bidens being drug in has any real relevance to what’s been investigated, but is all about Repubs trying in vain to defend the indefensible. And if playing along with that gets Dems the witnesses that they’ve been seeking, witnesses who will be stuck either committing perjury or pleading the 5th on national TV, then Joe and Hunter taking part in the whole circus will have been worth it.

This is straight-up quasi-democracy authoritarian state shit:

[Embedded content]

When the articles of impeachment are delivered to the Senate, a procession full of pomp and circumstance, just one video camera and no still photographers will be allowed to document the historic moment. No audio recording at all will be permitted, leaving radio reporters empty-handed.

During the trial, a single press pen will be set up on the second floor of the Senate, where lawmakers enter and exit the chamber. Reporters will be confined to the pen, unable to move with senators. No movement will be allowed outside the corrals, and reporters and photographers will need to be escorted to and from the pen.

Credentialed members of the media, who go through security screening to enter the Capitol each day, will be screened a second time to enter the Senate chamber to watch the trial proceedings. Magnetometers will be set up in the Senate Daily Press Gallery, requiring reporters to enter the chamber one by one after being cleared by Capitol Police operating the machine.

JFC. Don’t be surprised if Fox News or OAN gets some “special” exemptions from these rules.

Marco Rubio had ties to a Miami cocaine cartel, so what?

I actually to be honest did not know this. It was honestly a hypothetical. I very much doubt Rubio was involved in any way with what his sister’s husband did. Seems like there is a fair age gap between Rubio and both his sister and his brother in law. However, he does seem to have dismissed it in a way that if he were a Democratic candidate that the media would have never let him. It’s not like his brother in law was the friendly neighborohod weedman.

About the only thing I’m surprised about in this whole shit-show is how complacent the US intelligence agencies have been in the face of the Russians conspiring with the Republican party to undermine the US’s interests.

It’s a pain in the ass isn’t it?

You used to be able to easily buy Sudafed no questions asked. Now that the drug makers have ruined it for all of us, it’s practically easier to purchase a gun than the medication you might need.

Awhile back when I was travelling, I went to a Wal-Mart near my hotel. I accidentally left my wallet behind but whatever, I had $50 in my pocket and I was only needing a few things. I had a bad cold so I decided to pick up some Sudafed.

I’m sure you can guess what happened next.

They wouldn’t sell to me without ID. So I had drag my sick ass back to the hotel, get my wallet and then drag myself back to the Wal-Mart. Then I had to wait for the 8 people in front of me in the pharmacy line. Then when I finally got to the counter it must have taken the tech a good five minutes to locate and actually sell me the damn Sudafed.

By the time I got done at that store, I felt like I was going to pass out. I had to sit on a bench outside for about 15 minutes to work up the energy to walk back to the hotel.

I slept 12 hours that night and felt much better the next morning.

So much of the defenses of Trump have been “He’s the president, he can do whatever he wants.” Wonder how those Republicans will feel if somehow a President Sanders got oh I dunno Venezuela to investigate Marco Rubio’s brother or brother in law (I don’t know if he has one but this is a hypothetical) for alleged corruption. And yeah I would have a problem with it. If Republicans really thought that this whole thing with Hunter was this awful corruption, they would have objected to it years ago when it actually happened and they would have demanded that Ivanka and Jared have no role at all in the WH but they didn’t. They in fact ignored that Trump let both of them in without passing a security clearance.

Marco Rubio’s brother-in-law:

Orlando Cicilla is married to Rubio’s sister. He was convicted as part of a cocaine smuggling cartel and sentenced to twenty-five years. He was released in 2000 after serving twelve years.

Most transparent administration. He even choked on the words.

Trump says he is the ‘most transparent president’ in US history

At least Rubio isn’t as awkward as Cruz talking basketball. God that was painful.

Or elbowing his wife out of the box as he went in to hug his father—the killer of JFK.

Start plastering the screenshot all over Twitter, like to Popehat and Walter Schaub.

re: #129 Jay C

LAX being right on the coast, it’s probably illegal to dump fuel in the ocean: so he likely just dumped it on the nearest neighborhood, instead…

It’s not illegal to fuel dump over water, in fact it’s the preferred method, also over unpopulated areas at an altitude of at least 8000 ft so the fuel will evaporate harmlessly.
I’ve worked ATC in that area many years and yes the pilot will have to explain that screw up.

She worked for W Bush too. Lifelong diplomats and public servants like her work for both parties administrations. Clapper did too. In fact during the Bush years, my mom worked for the agency he was administrator of- NGA.

Schiff is a former federal prosecutor whose resume includes convicting a FBI agent who spied for the USSR. Hyde is a lackey for the guy who cries about SNL spoofing him.
