We should note that every Republican Senator who takes the oath swearing to be “impartial” will be lying, and will immediately violate that oath.

Unless something very unusual happens, and I’m not holding my breath for that.

At 12 p.m. Eastern, the House impeachment managers will walk across the Capitol to the Senate side for the exhibition of the articles. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff will then read the two articles of impeachment against Trump on the Senate floor. Later, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., who will preside over the trial, will swear in the senators as jurors. The trial will likely start next week.

On Jan. 15, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) signed the articles at a ceremony in the Capitol, hours after she named a team of managers led by Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) YouTube

In 2016, the last year there were any reliable stats, about 756 women died in childbirth. That number has grown by at least 65%, and infant mortality is through the roof.

Don’t hear many of the right-wingers who yammer on about Sacred Fetuses talking about this, though. Wonder why?

Parnas had direct evidence. He had supporting evidence. Parnas isn’t a whistleblower or something. He’s directly implicated in a conspiracy to stalk and harass and potentially attack a US ambassador in conjunction with the president’s personal lawyer who has already indicated to the Ukranian president that he’s acting at the direction of Trump (US Oval Office Occupant). There’s no whistleblower here.

Firings and fines. Boston and Houston both dumped their managers after MLB levied fines/penalties (still not harsh enough but the owners of those teams had it right - fire them to move on).

The GOP is still acting as though it’s fine to completely cover for the most corrupt and criminal admin in our nation’s history.

Rose was right when he said this kind of cheating should at least deliver the death penalty - lifetime bans - as happened to him.

He had Nick Christoff and Sheryl WuDunn, who have written a book on communities in America where the working class is losing hope, dying in unexpected numbers from opiates and other addictions, etc. One of the things Kristof said was about the American Right and their whole thing about “personal reponsibility”, blamign the people in these communities for their own problems. But he kinda ‘both-sidesed’ it, by saying some on the Left say they brought this on themselves voting for the GOP all this time.

The GOP is ACTIVELY working to make these people’s lives worse, with things like more stringent limits on SNAP and similar, while waxing lyrical about the “Dignity of Work”. Meanwhile the Democrats are trying to save their benefits, make education more affordable, increase their wages, and get them universal healthcare and reduced prescription drug prices. I have never heard any prominent Democrat suggest we should leave these folks to suffer because they voted GOP.

But beyond that, Trump got elected by appealing to these folks with the promise of bringing back the 1950s and punishing the people they imagined took away their prosperity. He’s done fuck all to achieve the first goal, and there’s NO WAY to go back there, anyway. It will never again be profitable to have the small factories in little towns all over exurban America, or even in bigger cities like Erie or Scranton. That time is GONE, and it isn’t because these folks have been replaced by an equal number of Chinese doing the same jobs in little towns there. But they’ll largely cling to Trump because he’s been working assiduously at the second goal, punishing the people they think are responsible.

I don’t know what the answer is, but it’s not going to be giving more money to the rich, making imported goods less affordable, and taking food out of struggling families’ mouths. Jobs are concentrating increasingly in the metro areas, and people will have to move to them. At the same time, all those people moving in will make housing even more unaffordable unless we build radically more housing where the jobs are. But even then, we can’t keep concentrating wealth and income at the top.

The Free Market won’t fix this.

Besides, there’s a big difference between policy and thinking “Man those people are being idiotic for still voting Republican.” You are right though. The GOP has created this culture where people are to blame for all their misfortune. One thing that definitely impacted why I don’t trust corporate America is a member. My late grandmother’s big brother was a WWII veteran and a lifer at Bethlehem Steel. He was in the union and got his pension. He got sick from all the years in the mills. He died in 1996 so he wasn’t directly impacted by this but eventually Bethlehem took the pension away. The GOP and right wing economic policy in general is to tell people who need help “Sorry, but it’s evil if government does this”, this all coming from legislators who get their health care covered by the US taxpayer or pundits who wax poetic about “work” while being nothing but propagandists. I remember when we discussed Walker’s war on the teachers in Wisconsin and a certain former lizard showing no empathy at all to the teachers. You can disagree with the public unions needing to exist but the fact is they do exist and they had negoitated a pension. The GOP just doesn’t care about anyone;s welfare who isn’t in their donor case. Oh they pander to the less well off with symbolism but the Red Hats aren’t the ones benefiting economically from Trumpism but Trump and his cronies sure are.

I watch a lot of Vice Documentaries mostly about the former Soviet SR’s since that part of the world has always interested me. Trump and his cronies really remind me of how Lukashenko, Kadyrov, etc among others act towards the democratic process and of course the media. I can understand the siren call of holding out hope that someone, anyone, in today’s GOP will actually look at the evidence provided and vote for removal but when I look down the laundry list of characters, can you find four to five Senators that would actually do it?

These guys have already allowed legal nobodies to be federal judges, watched Trump put kids in cages, separated them from the families, violate asylum and immigration laws, kills foreign leaders without notification of Congress, allowed the brutal murder of a Saudi journalist living in America, built a wall using defense department funds, violation of the emoluments clause, listened to him admit to the crimes in the phone call, surround himself with people who have already been convicted of various and sundry crimes and call upon a foreign power to hack his political opponents and a few other things like violation of campaign finance laws to pay off porn stars while campaigning for the office of the Presidency…

I figure if they can let treason and everything else pass, why not extortion and advocating the assault of federal employees… makes obstruction of justice seem almost quaint.

I had another appointment so did not have time to engage her; only said that each vote should have the same weight and then was forced to depart.

There’s an argument that the electoral college is a major contributor to low turnout. If you’re a Republican in California, your vote is essentially meaningless. Similarly, if you’re a Democrat in Wyoming, your vote is equally meaningless.

Because it’s winner take all for electoral votes, there’s no point in putting any effort into GOTV efforts if you’re going to lose by 15 or 20 points in a state. But if it’s a national popular vote, a Republican doesn’t necessarily need to close the 20 point gap in California to win; they just have to make it closer. Same goes for a Democrat in Texas or other smaller states.

Beyond that, the EC was conceived within a framework where the States were seen as “sovereign” if not on par with the federal government, then close to it. It’s also why the Senate wasn’t directly elected either. The idea was that the States as States separate from “the people” were parties to the constitution as a contract. Think of it like the legal personhood we give businesses.

However, over the last 230 years or so, the idea of state sovereignty has eroded. Both from a cultural viewpoint and from a legal viewpoint.

Relatedly, if there’s one thing that burns my biscuits, it’s some goober telling me that I don’t like the EC because I don’t understand it. I understand it PERFECTLY, and I think it’s stupid. I thought it was stupid when I first heard it explained in 9th grade Civics class, and I have continued to think it was stupid since. It has ALWAYS been a system for giving some Americans a larger voice in choosing the President simply because of where they live. The EC isn’t working for the smaller states now. When was the last time either party tried to work hard for the votes of the smaller states? A popular vote would at least incentivize parties to send organizers to these states, and to parts of the now unitary states that have a significant number of their voters. Nobody reaches out to California Republicans or Mississippi Democrats: their states are foregone conclusions now. And as for those who are upset at NYC and LA picking their Presidents: they need to remember cities aren’t that monolithic now anyway.

The founders were afraid of the bigger states dominating but that really hasn’t been a thing. Texas and California are at opposite ends of many polarizing issues. Small Rhode Island has more in common philosophically with Cali just like small Wyoming has more with Texas. I think the Founders didn’t anticipate the politics of a modern Republic. Remember that a lot of what they were reading was theory by people who had read about Athens and Rome but they didn’t live it. They either lived in a limited monarchy like Locke did in England or an absolute one like Voltaire.

Well my take is more like this.
They hit troop barracks directly. That’s shoot to kill. Not a lot of troops but a demonstrative few dozen, which btw they claimed to have done. They fired less than 20 missiles, which to me might really be the best measure of their restraint. I’m pretty sure they were fine with taking out that barracks with our people in there. The warning? Pro forma for Iraqis. I can’t imagine them being ignorant of our ability to detect and track missiles on our own.

Ballistic missiles are lethal. For one thing, the kinetic energy of the descending warhead is added to the explosive energy of the charge when the warhead detonates. On short-range and some medium range missiles this means the energy of the whole missile body, since these do not usually have a separating warhead. This can be a very substantial amount of extra bang unless the missile has been deliberately slowed during its terminal descent.
It isn’t too well known today, but Egypt had some minor success with the original short-range R-17 Elbrus “Scud” during the late stages of the Yom Kippur war of 1973. Unlike Saddam’s later extended range Scud, which sacrificed a great deal of warhead weight and accuracy for range, these retained full designed capability. Accuracy was still nothing to brag about, but it was usable against some targets.

The first recorded combat use of the Scud was at the end of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, when three missiles were fired by Egypt against the Israeli Arish and bridgehead on the western bank of the Suez canal. Seven Israeli soldiers were killed.

Another little known fact about the history of missile warfare. During World War 2, the strategic Belgian port city of Antwerp was actually more heavily targeted by German V-weapons than London. This included both V-1s and V-2s but the ballistic V-2s were more lethal due to the lack of warning. A single V-2 hit on the Rex Cinema killed 567 people when the missile struck during a sold-out performance of The Plainsman with Randolph Scott. Another 250 or so were injured.

Antwerp: City of Sudden Death

During the V-weapon onslaught, over a period of 175 days and nights, the German launching crews fired more than 4,000 V-1s and more than 1,700 V-2s at greater Antwerp. Of those, 106 V-1s and 107 V-2s hit the heart of the city. During that period more than 3,700 civilians were killed and some 6,000 injured in the provence of Antwerp.

In addition, several hundred allied soldiers were killed (more than half the victims at the Rex were off-duty military personnel.)

The right wing has been hitting the woo a lot harder recently, UFOs, secret tech, secret societies, etc. There has always been a right wing element in woo-world but a lot of new, and more mainstream, players are coming into it. I see this as part of their effort to discredit, and eventually destroy, the “Deep State” on behalf of the GRU and domestic dominionists and libertarian feudalists who want an end to federal regulation and law enforcement.
