It’s an incestuous circle of lawyers who are repping Trumpworld figures. The same small group are repping key figures, which makes little sense unless you begin to realize that no reputable lawyer would represent any of these people because they consider them such a risk to the lawyer’s reputation and standing with the bar association.

So when Iran hit back and caused American casualties, the American military lied for days about the extent of the damage and the casualties - the missile attack was far more damaging than the US wanted to admit. Iran showed it has the willingness to protect itself at all costs, and Trump doesn’t get any of this.

You are so right. Lev Parnas is clearly the 2020 version of Michael Cohen, but hopefully he will have more impact than Cohen. Trump survived Cohen’s charges; they were like a small blip that had a brief impact on news and a SNL sketch but then vanished when the Mueller report landed with no discernible long-term impact, except for emboldening Trump and throwing Amash out of the GOP. Maybe this time the allegations will bring Trump down but after so many failures over the past few years, it’s hard to retain optimism.

But at least the predicted weather in Chicago has improved sufficiently so that I am able to drag my sister to the Women’s March today!

The Space Force wearing current Air Force fatigues is perchance the only sensible endeavor yet with the establishment of the branch. Currently, all Space Force personnel will be laterally transferring from the Air Force. Last night I noted that World War 3 of coyotes broke out outside my back door. I banged on the siding with my hand and yelled, and they left. This morning I found out why. There is a doe dead there. Apparently they chased her down the hill and she ran into the horse trailer and broke her neck. My long-suffering “son” is coming down to take her up the hill so wildlife can take care of her, bless her heart, and my yard won’t have the … bad … results.

I’d agree with your assessment. And inevitably, they’re going to arrive at that moment of worldview death, when it all comes crashing down and there’s nothing more they can do to prevent it or forestall it.

And that’s when things are gonna get potentially scary, as I have little doubt that some of them will violently lash out as their world crumbles all around them.

True, but enough time has passed that the hinterland gentry has fully consumed its own bullshit and most of them are just as nuts as the rabble. This is the part that the original architects of the Southern Strategy didn’t count on.

That’s the problem I have with Orwell’s 1984: the inner party member (O’Brien) completely and clearly explains how the system works to Winston Smith, objectively, leaving nothing out. Obviously, he’s Mr Exposition for literary purposes, but from our modern experience with this sort of authoritarian system, he’d be talking about his natural superiority and the glorious future of Airstrip One.

Orwell knows this, though: he understands colonialism which is similar. In Shooting an Elephant, the colonial master “wears a mask and his face grows to fit it.” That’s what really happens.

I did as well. That was one part of Hillbilly Elegy that I appreciated: that Appalachian whites were as distinct an ethnic group as the Latinos and blacks on our street. They were white, but not the same kind of “white” as the Eastern European or WASP whites.

That kind of thing with my grandparents taught me a wonderful lesson. When they moved to a street in an area called Van Ness it was all white middle class. Circa 1940. By the time mom took me to visit it was a black neighborhood. The adults would be visiting I would go ride bikes and play with the neighborhood black kids.

During the week I would spend after school hours in a Latino neighborhood in the north valley. So, playing with those kids who would tease me for my lack of Spanish. And taught me a little Spanish with a lot of life lessons.

The valuable lesson was go play with any of the kids. Color did not matter on a bike or playground, and I never caught shit for being white.

We build on a fraction of real estate in the entire US. Majority of the housing crunch is in urban areas because that’s where people want to live. The more people want to live there without more housing, the higher the price for that (supply/demand).

We could get more affordable housing but the businesses that build houses don’t see profit in expanding the supply. They profit when the demand vastly exceeds supply driving up prices.

That’s why urban areas have to convince and cajole builders to set aside affordable housing.

In my neck of the woods, a builder is constructing a new development. ~150 new units. A percentage was set aside for affordable housing - and the rest cost $600k or more.

That means that if 20 units were set aside for affordable housing and they can charge $250k, they still generate $5 million. With the remaining 130 units, they’d generate: 78 million. Since construction costs for everything would be roughly the same, and say it cost $200k to build each, they’re making some serious coinage. They’re just making slightly less with the affordable housing.

Another way to look at this - billionaires row in NYC. Building for billionaires means units costing 50-60 million each or more, and it doesn’t generate any new affordable housing - older stock of housing billionaires previously listed don’t suddenly become affordable. It’s still expensive as fuck to buy - just that the billionaires aren’t buying there, just super-millionaires. There’s no trickle down here.

Worse yet, in many towns and cities including my own, single-family-home owners have de facto veto power over apartment blocks. These homeowners are disproportionately represented in government. Many times, public hearings become shouting matches (I stopped attending these—shouting is very bad for you when you’re autistic!)

This past election season, I tried to get several progressives elected who would have paid attention to renters and low-income people. No luck. Very disheartening.

I just took my wife to the Babylon train station (about 5 miles from our house). As we walked out the door it started snowing. By the time we got near the station, I went to make a right turn and slid right past the side road. There’s not much snow, but the roads beneath were plenty cold enough to turn right to ice. I did 30 MPH back to the house, and cars and trucks were sliding all over.

It’s supposed to snow another couple of inches, then turn to sleet. I was supposed to go out to a band mate’s house this afternoon but I might just take a pass on that.

If you’re in a snow affected area, please be careful! It’s way worse than it looks on the roads.

Yup. Saw that in northern NJ. Went from nothing to full blown snow with 1/4 mile visibility within a few minutes at around noon. It’s let up, but driving was very slow as everyone realized conditions weren’t great - except for the assholes that think four wheel drive means four wheel stopping.

Quite true: but if you’re referring to those 90-story “spires” in Midtown which have been disrupting traffic for their construction for years, I’m not sure that is an apt analogy to California’s problems: those $50M floor-throughs aren’t (IMO) really “housing” per se; but a form of secure “investment” asset: albeit one that, unlike jewelry, or fine art, or securities, one that you can live in, if necessary. But of course, since the return on building “fancy prisons for billionaires” is so high, that’s where the money is going to gravitate to. As even 432 Park’s architect noted:

Yeah, I came out of the gym at about 4:45 and it was snowing that pelting snow. I got home to hear that my son was working with a friend on robotics stuff at the friend’s house and wanted to be picked up at 7:30. Normally I wouldn’t freak out, but I knew that first, it would involve 20 minutes of cleaning off the car again (we don’t have a garage), and B, the side roads to his friend’s house would be a nightmare in short time. We just got home. I was right.
