*sigh*

My mother is doing ok—she was taken off her blood thinners—but she’s still at the hospital because it’s Saturday and home health care has not been approved. She can get around but she’s rather wobbly. Part of the problem is she refuses to use a walker and she needs to do so. I just texted my brother that she might be stuck there until Tuesday because it’s a holiday weekend. His response: “Maybe [name of hospital] needs butts in beds.”

I really think he’s like the white leftists that Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison wrote about. Either way, he never misses an opportunity to crap on the Obama coalition that this Southern white man was honored to be a part of. He just doesn’t seem to like the fact that whites in most states are Republicans and instead of actually trying to realize that maybe he sees things too black and white, he says stupid shit like this. Vermont isn’t representative of our nation and that blinds Bernie so much politically.

“Come Together” was inspired by a request from Timothy Leary to write a song for his campaign for governor of California against Ronald Reagan, which promptly ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana.

The thing was created in the studio. It’s gobbledygook; Come Together was an expression that Leary had come up with for his attempt at being president or whatever he wanted to be, and he asked me to write a campaign song. I tried and tried, but I couldn’t come up with one. But I came up with this, Come Together, which would’ve been no good to him—you couldn’t have a campaign song like that, right?

Thank you Wikipedia.

The first day there my dad and his friends spent a large part of the evening discussing the previous night’s news that a cop had cut off the ear of a black man with a garden hoe. Didn’t really seem to be any particular reason- cop just got angry, and well, there you go. Should have known better.

It’s interesting to see people openly discussing cannabis sales; it’s still a very controversial subject here in Czech Republic, despite the fact that some 40% (or more) of the population uses cannabis on a regular basis. Indeed, though it’s technically illegal, you can find cannabis-based products everywhere, even in the supermarket that’s a five-minute walk away from my place.

The controversy comes up when talking about outright legalization - there’s still a ton of political dinosaurs here that constantly insist that it’s a “gateway drug” and that if it’s legalized, the Czech Republic will collapse into anarchy overnight (they seem to think that Reefer Madness is a completely factual documentary, LOL).

Eventually, of course, it’ll happen, but probably not for another decade or so, I figure.

Meanwhile, in ol’ Virginny……

Virginia’s House Republican leader said on Saturday that white supremacists and any other groups trying to spread “hate, violence, or civil unrest” were not welcome at a pro-gun rally in the state’s capital on Monday, which is expected to draw thousands.

The House Republican leader’s statement came a day after the state’s top court upheld a ban by the governor on weapons in the area around the Capitol in Richmond where the rally is set to take place by demonstrators protesting against Democrats’ push to stiffen the state’s gun laws.

“Any group that comes to Richmond to spread white supremacist garbage, or any other form of hate, violence, or civil unrest isn’t welcome here,” House Republican leader Todd Gilbert said in a statement. “While we and our Democratic colleagues may have differences, we are all Virginians and we will stand united in opposition to any threats of violence or civil unrest from any quarter.”

Militias, neo-Nazis and other groups have vowed to attend the rally. Authorities say they are expecting several thousand people and are trying to keep the event from becoming violent.

Sounds like Gilbert is trying to cover his ass if everything goes sideways - and he might well be expecting a shitfest come Monday. This way, if it all goes to hell, he can say, “Hey, don’t look at me…….I told them not to come and start trouble.”

Silly fools, it doesn’t matter in the end.

YouTube

Outside November, I’m lying on my big bed
Out of the corner of my eye out the window I see the hospital
Chu not able to believe that I have to stop here
But all by myself, worse anyway it hurts me too much
My body is a country at war about to end
Army general expects the worst
I’m hungry, I’m fret, I’m too weak to wake up
We’re going to raise the white flag one point that’s all
I hear the phone screaming, I have friends
I wish I could get it up to talk to them
Say hello! I’m correct, always alive
The planet spins, isn’t supposed to spin without me
My enemy is arrogant and silent
It’s fun to know so young or old
He is sure of himself, he is methodical, he takes his time
Is in the service of death, does not know the feelings
These last days I have aged 4000 years
Visiting old memories that I’m not proud of
To make peace with your regrets, it takes time
I find myself a hundred times more tired, too tired but less bitter
The history of the world and my history are mixed
I just lived a hundred thousand other lives in a second
All my bullshit and the ambition of humanity
It comes down to the same thing, there’s no culprit, there’s no shame
But I’m happy because at least I’m dying with peace of mind
I’m going to start my other life the same way
I’m going to have instinct, I’m going to stay true to my style
The perfect harmony between my heart and my reason
The harmonica is not a violin, it is not eternal
And then it cries as if it was aware of its fate
Besides at night I allow myself to cry with her
I’m waiting a little, I’m in no hurry, I’m waiting for death.

President Donald Trump offered chilling details to GOP donors about the airstrike assassination of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani on Jan. 2 — and a new reason for the hit: He was saying “bad things” about America.

“How much of this shit do we have to listen to?” Trump asked his audience of well-heeled contributors Friday night at Mar-a-Lago, his resort in Palm Beach, Florida, according to audio recordings of his comments obtained by CNN and The Washington Post.

“He was saying bad things about our country, like ‘we’re going to attack, we’re going to kill your people,’”
Trump said, according to the Post.

The president didn’t mention any “imminent attack” planned by the military commander.

Virginia braces for enormous gun-rights rally Monday
“Convoys and militias are coming, if social media posts are to be believed, headed to Virginia’s capital on Monday to take a stand for gun rights — or, in the words of some, to fan the flames of a civil war.

“I’ll be rolling into town early. I can’t give you my exact time for security reasons,” said Christian Yingling, head of the Pennsylvania Light Foot Militia and a leader at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville in 2017.

“I organized a convoy, places we can meet up and drive up together. I’ll be leading it,” said Tammy Lee, a militia activist in Oklahoma.

Both Lee and Yingling were members of groups that signed consent decrees never to return to Charlottesville while armed, part of a lawsuit settlement over the violence there. But there is no restriction against coming to Richmond.”

“For security reasons?” What a ridiculous poseur. Still, these goobers have guns, they are obsessed with them, and they have the administration, the NRA, and, ultimately, the Russian oligarchy behind them. It’s likely that nothing untoward will happen but disaster is a real possibility and it will be very tense until these mutants get out of town and crawl back to their caves and ‘burbs.

The first day there my dad and his friends spent a large part of the evening discussing the previous night’s news that a cop had cut off the ear of a black man with a garden hoe. Didn’t really seem to be any particular reason- cop just got angry, and well, there you go. Should have known better.

No charges were ever filled.

Racism in Mississippi is as intrinsic to its character as kudzu, spanish moss and the dead, moist heat.

I graduated HS in Greenville, MS. My dad was born there and I have many family members still living there. I know exactly what you mean. Was shot at one night by some redneck shitstains because my best friend there was black and we were hanging out. I know those fuckers well.

Well, when at least some of those “dangerous radicals” are a duly-elected State Legislature, it’s kind of hard to paint them as just some fringe: one presumes that the slate of gun-control measures they are considering - as the NYT condenses:

The measures limit purchases of handguns to one each month; require that gun buyers submit to background checks; and allow local governments to ban guns in parks and public buildings. [Governor] Mr. Northam has said he would sign each of the bills.

has to have some some of public support behind them. These measures seem pretty mild to me: MAYBE excepting the monthly limit - though of course, to the gun-nut crowd, ANY firearms-controlling measures are intolerable.

“Antifa”, though, is another matter: if only for the boogeyman-factor they unfortunately evoke in most of the media. Hopefully, their presence will be minimal, and their “services” NOT required…

Lottery sales are highest in the high population states (of course). Powerball jackpot is currently creeping up to real-money territory and the sales are starting to go up.

Lottery sales have been down, significantly, for the draw games the past year. This has not been covered enough, as I think it is a window into America.

I doubt the media however will broadly paint them with the brush that they’re all Nazi sympathizers since conservatives always get the benefit of the doubt as compared to how liberal protests are portrayed by them.

Translates as “They are a threat, but we’re still superior to them.” Pretty much the standard “other” treatment by the bigots since whenever. Dutch/Germans, Irish, Italians, Russians, etc. going back to the 13 Colonies. The labels just change every so often.

I’m seeing lots of tweets about Harry and Meghan and what a vicious social climber Meghan is and how unfair it is to be accused of racism and wonder why English soccer fans have to be reminded by public announcements at games not to yell racist stuff at black players but aren’t told “don’t call them social climbers.”

Before Kate produced heirs, she and her sister Pippa were called social climbers. The UK press even nicknamed them, “the wisteria sisters”.

Except that in Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” it wasn’t fluid. You were either Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta or Epsilon. And you were expected to either live up to or stay in your place. And I believe this whole business about alphas and betas may have come from that, ultimately.

That again shows how clueless the people who use it are. That is a work of fiction about human breeding, but when they talk about “alpha male” I believe they generally have a pride of lions in mind. (totally forgetting that in hyenas, females are the alpha)

It was about programming humans — not really breeding. Children were brainwashed from the time they were infants on their role in society. Of course, the novel preceded computers but wasn’t the message, in effect, society can implant whatever software is needed to control an individual’s intellectual and social development? i.e. in the nature vs nurture argument, it was the ultimate in supporting the nurture side.

It was also breeding: alphas were bred one egg per individuals, the other classes were bred in multiples, dozens at a time, which also made industrial and social standardization a lot easier.

Yeah: JIMO, the whole “Megxit” thing has pushed a whole lot of buttons in the British “public” - or at least the “public” the trash media wants to promote as the “normal” - and that’s just one of them.

To me, the whole subtext is that Royals like Prince Harry owe a “duty” to the country/the people/the society in return for their social standing smack atop the pyramid of privilege in British society (and, of course, though it’s seldom stressed, the enormous wealth). That Harry has decided that said “duty” doesn’t entail having to put up with endless public scrutiny/gossip/abuse of him, his wife, and his children by a vicious and unethical gutter press, and that he wants out, just ticks off too many Brits for whom “It Just Isn’t Done” is still a main guiding principle…..

McSally is representative to what’s happened to the GOP as a whole… she won in what used to be AZ-8 as a moderate in a highly competitive district that used to be represented by Gabby Giffords, it incorporates a fair bit of Metro Tucson, offset with a boatload of rural SE AZ comprised of a whole lotta ranchers and small business types that usually gravitate to the GOP, they ARE concerned about the border because the coyotes that traffic people/drugs can be destructive, knocking down fences and vandalizing property and when they started trending more to combing drugs with people, it attracted more violent types… So in short, our drug problem and our illegal border crossing problems here in Southern AZ became intertwined. Giffords believed in enforcement and in attempting to tackle the money aspect of the issue by pushing for not only better enforcement of people coming in, but money going out. McSally, not so much and soon morphed from a military vet who was a trailblazer and who had her own stories of sexual assault while rising thru ranks to leading the GOP cheers to gut the ACA and succumb to the “it’s either them or us” mentality that is so pervasive.

It’s sad to watch some devolve politically like this… I loathe what she stands for and her own personal failings from respected vet to just another Fox spewing fanatic

Trump touched the GOP and poisoned it. There was a lot wrong there before Trump since he’s their rotten underbelly turned to “11”, but a lot of people in the party who seemed to have some good in them appear to have doubled down on the ugly and transformed out of a misplaced sense of party loyalty and/or greed to maintain power.

He started an attention-grabbing race to the bottom: anything that was seen as critical of their opposition or the Left in general went undisputed, no matter how far-fetched, contradictory or unfounded.

There is no bottom, this is turtles all the way down now, and the GOP has the choice between alienating these people entirely or losing the rest of the electorate.

Definitely some looking down though but WV definitely has elements that hate how socially liberal Va has become. I honestly don’t hate any state though I could easily say I hate the political culture of a few.

This born and bred Virginian hates West Virginia, but that hatred didn’t come until weeks after I had moved there at age 29 when my wife took a job at a now defunct college/university run by an autocratic Trumpian grifter who was once the highest paid private university president in the nation. (Google College of West Virginia/Mountain State University. Also google “Charles Polk” and “Apex Learning” for the former university president’s business ethics philosophy.) I was stuck in West Virginia for nine years. I regard that period as our personal “lost decade.”

That’s a home-made Rapture. If they have an area on the moon that can hold some people in an acceptable atmosphere, after they have this world on the brink of destruction, they can take their small number (whisk them away!) to the moon and have their own Rapture.

That’s the libertarian fantasy right there. It is. I read the same science fiction they did, and I belonged to the L5 Society for a time. Stanley Schmidt, who edited Analog SF Magazine, was always running stories with that trope, and the idea of escaping the statists.

I have really mixed emotions: I love space. But as a disabled person on assistance, I am just the kind of person the libertarians want to escape from!

Oh, I don’t doubt you for a second. I just don’t “hate” it. Unfortunately though, Trumpism does lend itself very well to WV politics and business. The current governor of WV is out of central casting to play a 19th century robber baron antagonist.

I’ve had conversations with the current governor of West Virginia when he served on our local school board. Back then, he could talk a good game, but after a while, you’d wonder how much you could really trust him, and then, he’d eventually flake out and prove unreliable.

Cory Booker was a candidate of grace in an ugly political climate, by Karen Tumulty in WaPo.

…”But I do not believe you can campaign wrong and then hope to govern right.”
As he announced his departure, Booker said that while he fell short in his campaign for president, he has not lost the central belief that animated it. “I’m proud I never compromised my faith in these principles during this campaign to score political points or tear down others,” he said. “And maybe I’m stubborn, but I’ll never abandon my faith in what we can accomplish when we join together.”
Booker’s may not have been the right rallying cry for the fevered 2020 primary campaign. But it will be a terrible thing for the country if it cannot strike a chord somewhere down the road.

I mean it’s the same thing Limbaugh tried urging his listeners to do with Obama 12 years ago so I don’t necessarily blame Bernie for it. Where I do blame Bernie is this. Acting like his wins in Republican primary mostly white states is an argument for why he should be the nominee and shitting on the more diverse electorate. When Biden beats him considerably in SC, we’re going to see so much shitting on that state from his campaign.

No academic freedom. No tenure. Low pay. You could be fired, locked out of your office, and escorted off the premises for any reason. IMO, it’s all going to come down to the level of violence the march engenders. If it comes off with a hitch, or at least only minor, non-casualty-inducing hitches, it’s probably going to be reported (unfortunately) as at least moderately favorable to the marchers. Or, in any case, frantically both-sidered.

However, if there is, (Dog forbid) a Charlottesville-type incident, yeah: I think the backlash is going to come: I’m sure that there are going to be plenty of swastikas, Odin runes and SS-symbols in evidence: it’s not likely to make the march organizers look good if their “Second Amendment” turnout devolves into a Nuremberg Rally, still less if violence breaks out.

Holy moly. I worked as visiting at a place that hired a former Goldman-Sachs exec who got a PhD midlife and immediately became a college president. He was shown the door when there was a nearly unanimous non-confidence vote from the faculty for his heavy-handed influence in faculty decision making. I was being considered for permanent employment, but the brouhaha made any hiring out of the question at the time. It can be a shitty world, academia.
