Watch Live: Trump’s Impeachment Trial

Politics • Views: 19,085

YouTube

A second thread, as Adam Schiff takes the stand and points out again that everything Trump’s lawyers just said was either 1) an outright lie, or 2) a distortion of reality.

We’ve now gotten a glimpse of the Trump team’s strategy. They’re not making legal arguments, they’re parroting Trump’s lies and evasions. It’s Trump by proxy. A performance for an audience of one.

The Senate impeachment trial of President Trump continues on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Senators will consider the rules for the trial and other legislative work is possible. cs.pn

as Kamala Harris noted, the GOP lawyers are doing this in the hopes that the House impeachment managers will waste their limited allotted time responding to the lies.

SURPRISE!

The House impeachment managers aren’t that stupid.

I know Romney is completely safe, but I hope the other 3 burn (metaphorically speaking) for this.

(And it would sure be swell if the press ignored any “concerns” that any of these 4 have (although Gardner and McSally don’t profess to be moderates) about what Trump is doing).

this is where i really wish wilford brimley from absence of malice was presiding: “So, Mr. McConnell, have you thought about what you would do after your senatorial career comes to an end?” “Well, your honor, I don’t really see my career coming to an end.” “That’s too bad, because unlike Mr. Trump, you work for me. You’ve got 7 days to put your crap in a box.”

The entire gameplan here is so transparent, it’d be laughable if not so sad: Push out the vote as long as possible, so that when it comes, she can sniff that she didn’t see anything to make her believe more evidence/witnesses will change anything and so she’s voting against such.

Standard Collins. Voice “concerns” and then vote in lockstop when it counts. I hope the voters in Maine are wise enough to throw her out on her ass in November.

McConnell seems to think that this strategy will make Collins and the rest of the vulnerables look “reasonable,” that they held to the “Clinton precedent” in delaying a vote until after “opening statements.” But the Dem counter-strategy is pretty clear: Put every single witness and document up to a vote at the beginning, so that when that vote does come next week, it will be clear just what it is Repubs are voting to avoid.

I know I’m being ridiculous — but what if Romney’s plan is to listen and then vote in favor of the resolutions. After all, he’s not someone who needs to worry about re-election. So what if he is doing the long game and working on pulling a surprise that gets the votes needed to hear evidence.

That is the message the MSM has been promoting year after year — with their focus on exaggerating every Hillary flaw, with their daily both-siderism. Normal people who have a real life and who don’t spend every minute checking news or websites are naturally going to be taken in — this is certainly at the heart of Bernie-ism. The DNC is so corrupt only the pure-as-snow Bernie can come to the rescue and magically implement all these programs that he never tried to get passed all the years he served in the Senate.

OT: I’ve been having some flashbacks today to the clip from the gun-abuse rally yesterday to the guy who told a young hotshot to pipe down because “that’s what anarchists do.” And the first thing that was recorded from the guy was some garbled shit about “…and they teach them to masturbate….” Of course, my first thought was the line from Zelig when Woody Allen’s character says uncomfortably to his therapist: “I have to get back to the university. I’m teaching a class on masturbation and if I’m late they start without me.” I know it was really a rip at academics, but I think there’s an answer to the young man in the clip worrying that liberals will teach self-pleasure.

The smug overconfidence of a man who knows the game is already rigged in his favor.

But what Hugh doesn’t quite get is that the game being rigged is why, even if he “wins,” he and his fellow travelers are actually losing. Poll after poll shows that the public wants to hear from more witnesses, wants to hear from Bolton, and thinks that Dems were right to impeach Trump. Depending on which poll you check, sentiment is either in favor or split down the center on his being removed from office.

So yeah, the game was rigged from the start. The problem for Hugh and his buddies is nobody buys for a second that a rigged game is “fair.”

It’s still stark to see a party line vote that basically confirms that no, we really just do have a King instead of a President and as long as the GOP has the perfect bulwark in the Senate, there’s nothing any of us can do to hold him accountable.

Their plan is permanent Republican rule and that is the precedent that they are adopting and putting in effect. They don’t care about the damage to our democracy because their goal is to institute one party rule and no need for fair elections. Their schemes for voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression in every diverse state that they control is clear and unambiguous. There will not be a free election again in our lifetime if the GOP remains in charge of WH after the November election, especially if they still control the Senate.

OT: coronavirus. Comment on earlier discussions about this disease.

There is a claim of 2% mortality. However, that’s based on an estimate of the number of cases. What if, in fact, there were far more cases that were mild and never reported? Lethality can be very overstated if there is no solid determination of how widespread the disease is among the population.

I already know Cheeto Benito will be acquitted on a 53-47 vote, so all I’m really in suspense about right now is whether the trial will go past the SOTU date (if only to spare everyone his insufferable gloating)

Here’s a few headlines the NYT could use for coverage of the impeachment.

“Democratic truths clash with Republican lies at the start of Trump impeachment”

“The GOP defense of its corrupt president is based only on lies and bullshit”

“The Republican impeachment strategy is to insist that 2 + 2 = 5. It is the Party’s final, most essential, command.”

“Republicans put party over country to make Trump above the law”

Their party hasn’t even given the pretense of being interested in serious governance for awhile. I will never accept the excuses for the people who thought he was a good idea. We’ve been in far more drastic situations than 2016, it should have been obvious that Trump was a demagogue uninterested in any other than universal adulation. They just couldn’t accept that we would have had we elected HRC gone potentially 12 years without a white male president.
