Got CL’d:

re: #199 Dr Lizardo

There have been officially 18 deaths and 644 cases (more or less). And they’re putting cities with populations in the millions under de facto quarantine?

China got embarrassed pretty badly by it’s nowhere near adequate response to SARS about 15 years ago. Seems the Chinese are in no mood to be embarrassed again and so are being very proactive about trying to stop this thing quickly.

Although, the dark side of me thinks that this virus would be a very convenient excuse for an extended government crackdown in certain areas.

Or, it could be that you’re the one on trial.

I immediately imagined that political cartoon where the guy in the MAGA hat has this big conspiracy on the wall and the woman just has “he’s lying” and the MAGAt is confused.

Once again how many federal criminal statutes were there when the constitution and hence impeachment were adopted?

Ie what could a prez have been charged with federally and criminally?

Zero
None
Nothing
There were none yet.

Impeachment had nothing to do with criminal statutes or prosecutions

The point of such laws is to create such uncertainty in the law that people will take actions they otherwise would never consider in order to play CYA. See also: Keeping a corpse on life-support because there’s a fetus involved and the hospital’s legal department is scared shitless of being sued by the state.

If asked directly why won’t you allow evidence, they’re gonna go with”this is not the proper time or place”. But there are no hard rules or procedures for this. In fact that’s why they are *voting* on it.

Creating a dubious legal “technicality” not even a real one is not gonna fly and everyone will see it for the nonsense it is

Another “achievement” by Donald Trump:

We’re closer to destruction than ever before: Doomsday clock reset to 100 seconds to midnight

We are under two minutes to midnight for the first time in the history of the clock.
Four items that can be directly attributed to Trump can be identified:

1. Donald Trump on multiple occasions openly advocating the unilateral (and without congressional approval) using nuclear weapons against perceived enemies.
2. Donald Trump terminating Intermediary-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty .
3. Donald Trump revoking agreement with Iran regarding nuclear weapon development, thus removing any deterrent they have - and tensions between sides are highest since 1979.
4. Donald Trump large-scale rollbacks of climate change initiatives, including exiting from Paris Accords.

Unlike any other time in history, it’s OUR side who has the insane megalomaniac with his finger on the nuclear button.

“No new evidence” is an argument you make in an appeals court, not a criminal one. There is evidence, the House has submitted it, so any Repub Senator saying “no new evidence” is really saying he has no intention of even considering the evidence that has already been presented.

And Trump admitted the White House as more evidence. The Senate should get access to that.

I’d throw in the North Korean mess - where Trump was so desperate for a photo op that he ignored that North Korea didn’t give up its nukes and rather got more time to develop its nuclear stockpile and missile tech to give it enhanced nuclear blackmail capabilities while the US weakened its stance on nuclear proliferation the world over.
