But hey, two hours was all they needed and several senators have said that’s pretty much all they need to acquit Trump, so we’re good.

Or racism. (Including environmental racism.)

And even if he were the most progressive, I still wouldn’t support him. His legislative record is nil and his plan for overcoming Congressional resistance to his agenda (“There will be GIANT protests!”) is so childishly naive that it is insulting that he would try to sell it to us as an actual plan. And he certainly hasn’t sold me on him having any foreign policy expertise - which by itself isn’t disqualifying if I can trust that a candidate will have, and listen to, a great Cabinet and other advisors. He comes off as such an obnoxious know-it-all that I am not sure he would listen to qualified advisors.

Giant protests? In this country? We can’t even get 5% of the population blocking the entrance of every open business as the Senate is all-but-literally crowning King Donald!

My argument is this. You want to do the New Deal 2.0 when we don’t even have a majority in both Houses of Congress and you ignore the courts too. At best, Bernie would look like a lame duck, at worst, he’d be made out to be an uncompromising ideologue. I don’t like that the economic discussion in our country is the way it is either but it is naive of them to expect we’ll turn into Norway because of Bernie.

Dianne Feinstein is 86. She’d be 89 at the beginning of her next term, turning 90 a few months later.

FDR only got the New Deal enacted because he had supermajorities in both houses of Congress. And even then, he had to make compromises to avoid enough defections to kill his initiatives. And let’s not forget that even after accomplishing that, he still had to face court challenges to much of it.

Only in an optimistic scenario would Bernie have a Senate majority, and even that might require rule changes to the filibuster if he wants to have any hope of passing legislation before his term ends. If he failed to win the Senate, then forget it, he might as well sit in his office and play solitaire.

re: #108 Jebediah, RBG

Although you are right about which part of your comment is the most important, I take issue with “most progressive candidate in a generation.” Economically progressive, OK, but that isn’t the only measure of “progressive.”

It’s a reminder of just how much contempt they have for that there “Identity Politics”, which is almost always focused on allowing those whose identities have minimized their voice to, you know, actually have a voice. The ones that decry it the most are usually the ones that tend to have their ‘identities’ catered to the most, after all.

And yet, they’re the ones that are the most desperate to take the mantle of ‘civil rights’ all the while dismissing the folks on the ground working for civil rights the most, because they act like it takes focus away from the ‘real’ threat. Like…listen to how many in the trans community have been basically browbeat and told that their concerns must necessarily be trampled for the sake of the ‘big tent’. Especially by those who have gone out of their way to shitkick the entire Dem party for being ‘Republican Lite’ or centrist and having too big a tent.

Not to mention the whataboutism when they bring up Biden and his nostalgia for the olden days of the senate and former segregationist colleagues…you know, like those weren’t heavily called out by the very people calling this shit out. But no, Biden isn’t perfect, Warren isn’t perfect, therefore Sanders must immediately get a pass forever and anon because he is the closet to perfect or some shit.

And it looks like Sanders is actually reaping the rewards of this shit wholesale from the lovefest he’s getting from most mainstream reporters and rising polls. So…fine, fun, fan-fucking-tastic. The marginalized are getting kicked to the side again and stomped back into the corner because fuck it, the votes really don’t matter, do they?

We only have social security as we knew it because FDR had to agree with the Southern Dems to not allow agricultural workers (mostly black) into the program. Meanwhlie Obama gets treated like a Judas by these people because ACA wasn’t expansive enough. Not to mention they attack Obama as a warmonger and ignore FDR’s treatment of the Japanese-Americans during WWII. I think FDR was a great President but using him to shit on modern Democrats really pisses me off because he’s to that circle what Reagan is to Republican, an abstract idea rather than the actual president you describe.

I just ask calmly this- Senator Sanders has been in Washington since 1990, he’s been in the majority and minority as well as both Houses of Congress, why hasn’t he gotten any of his big ideas passed into law? And if you’re going to blame Congress for that, that’s a shitty excuse. There are other staunch progressives who have gotten their ideas passed into law. The problem with Bernie and his paleo-libertarian twin Ron Paul from 12 years ago is this, neither of them are really actually interested in passing laws. They’re interested in creating an image of themselves alone against a crooked system. And as flawed as Congress is, it’s not what they say it is either. Congress is flawed because of individuals.

I’ll level. I think Trump’s attorneys have no idea how serious this is and their client even less so. He really has convinced himself because all of the FNC he watches that he’s totally innocent and that he’s done nothing wrong. Not an excuse for him. Hell the total opposite because it speaks to what a lazy piece of shit he is. He’d rather watch Hannity, Jeanne, Fox and Friends, and others appeal to his vanity than actually be President. Trump has and I’ve felt like this from the start acted like a Michael Bay movie’s idea of a President only with even worse screenwriting because I don’t even think a Michael Bay President picks a fight with Denmark over Greenland or contradicts his IC in front of a hostile foreign president (Putin).

I characterized it a good while back as the press propping him up for the same reason they did the same to Trump in the summer of ‘15: They don’t see him as a serious contender, they see him as a novelty act that can’t win the nomination and thus will never be a serious challenge in the election itself. So they prop him up for the entertainment value, figuring that having him lighting fires and causing chaos makes for good ratings.

Which is kind of why the whole idea that the media “blacks out” Bernie is laughable. Hell if anything, I think more left leaning media over-amplifies him. I got really annoyed with him going on Larry Whitmore a few years ago and talking about how proud he was to be from New York after Ted Cruz made a snide remark about New York. It was like dude, you haven’t lived in New York since the 60’s and you actively dismiss the cultural identities of the people there as “identity politics.” I think that’s what bugs me about AOC, Omar, and Tlaib’s fondness for Bernie. They’re rightfully proud of their cultural backgrounds yet they embrace the bitter old man who tells young people of color not to be proud of that and try to be the first of their group to be something.

The media treats this as if it’s a game at times which is why I find the fact that Trumpers hate on the MSM almost amusing. If the media had treated Trump like the empty suit he was in 2015-6 instead of treating his candidacy seriously, he doesn’t get much anywhere. Yeah maybe he still does win the GOP nomination but he’s not treated like a serious candidate. Nominate a woman with Trump’s resume and baggage and tell me how she does. Trump is a byproduct of lingering sexism and racism. Whereas Obama and HRC had to work extra hard to prove themselves as serious candidates, Trump has these pathetic rallies where he goes off on random tangents about bizarre bullshit and the crowds eat it up.

And Then The Saints Came Marching In (goes to Wonkette, more at the link):

In 2018, the Archdiocese of New Orleans released the names of more than 50 clergy members credibly accuse of sexually abusing children. But before doing that, they emailed the owners and management of the New Orleans Saints football team for advice on how to manage the crisis. As one does.

Now, attorneys representing the two dozen men suing the archdiocese want to release those 276 emails, which they say prove that the Saints helped the archdiocese with their messaging, and aided in a “pattern and practice of concealing its crimes,” and the Saints are taking them to court to prevent this.

That’s my problem with Bernie when push comes to shove. Economic rights- the right to organize, affordable health care, etc are ones we should fight for and I’m honestly tehre with him on that but he also dismisses choice, LGBT rights, immigrant rights, etc as a “distraction. It’s very egotistical of a 80 year old white man from Vermont to do that. Bernie Sanders’ family doesn’t have to worry about ICE or some bigoted jackass denying them a service under the guise of “religious liberty.”

I certainly don’t agree that we need to go to the metaphorical back of the bus. Though I think straight PoC are better off than we are this time, which I guess is a little better than the last time this happened since I still deserve to lie in the bed my white ancestors made for me?

I’m a straight white dude- on the ASD so I don’t know where I fall but being on the spectrum has given me an empathy for marginalized groups because I know if I weren’t a SWD, I would definitely struggle. Hell life can be a challenge even as an affluent SWD on the spectrum but I would never tell you that your civil rights and your desire, the universal desire to live the happiest life you can are a mere “distraction” and that’s the one thing that the new left does that drives me bonkers. I’m sympathetic to leftist economic reform. Hell I even defend Marx even though I’m not a Marxist since I think ignorant people confuse Marxism with Leninism but civil rights and the people who want to take them away aren’t “distractions.”

Berners have become single-issue voters, but the single-issue is about the cult of Bernie.

On healthcare - Berners act like Democrats have not fought for subsidizing healthcare for the masses, when it’s been a Democratic party policy since the time of Truman to make health care available to all.

On “the climate” - Bernie is no better than any other politician who gives lip service to AGW but has not made any effective laws the past several decades.

On societal divisions - Bernie more than several of the other candidates seems out of place when discussing how different minorities are disenfranchised in the various ways that our society has set up.

On guns - Bernie is among the least willing to confront the gun-cult.

This idea that Bernie is the great leader of progressivism in this county is laughable.

I’m kind of grateful though to Bernie in a funny sense. I’m left wing, proud of it, but not to the point where I’ll overlook faults by a left wing candidate. So, I thank Bernie and the bros for showing me that even fi that was never their intention. I’d still vote for him over Trump but we could and we will do better. I don’t like bashing the guy but when his supporters bash men and women who have spent their adult lives trying to impact positive change because they have some skepticism towards Bernie, then you’ve made an enemy.

Of course, the very disturbing corollary is that anyone who served under Trump may well be an agent for a Werwolf-type of Deep State in their own right.

And that it would both be unfair to fire everyone upon the new admin, because that would punish any members of the Constitutional Deep State, and at the same time risky to have anyone, even Obama-era holdovers, continue on, because we wouldn’t know if their loyalties had shifted to their last boss.

China coronavirus: Misinformation about origin spreads online (Goes to BBC Monitoring, their foreign-language monitoring service)

Conspiracy theorists and anti-vaccination campaigners have been spreading misinformation on the English-language internet about the origin of the deadly coronavirus that has hit China and recently spread to the US.

At the heart of the claims being circulated on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube lies the false claim that the virus - which causes severe lung disease - is not new, but a known strain of the virus that is now being spread deliberately.

In fact, these conspiracies are based on patents relating to existing strains that are part of the wider coronavirus family, but have nothing to do with that currently spreading in China.

Watch the Berners trash the DMR now.

To me Warren has some baggage, but on the whole is pretty straight forward as a Democratic candidate. But I am not only a cynic but a pessimist, and I remain to be convinced that the America which is but a few elections away from A Handmaid’s Tale, will openly welcome Warren.

Which is why Biden and even Bernie are polling as good as they are. If Warren was male she would be far ahead of them.
