Impeached President Threatens Rep. Adam Schiff

Politics • Views: 26,054

Our horrible president* kicked off his Sunday morning by tweeting an ugly threat to Rep. Adam Schiff, probably because he recognizes Schiff as someone who is uncovering his crimes and he’s afraid.

Trump knows how fanatical his followers are, of course. This is his craven style — to incite his followers in a way he can deny if one of them carries out his implicit suggestions.

Bullshit. He also lied that there were no injuries and honestly since we’ve gone from 11 wounded to 33 wounded, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s been fatalities that he’s hidden from the public. Maybe not in this but in other adventures.

re: #432 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

Wouldn’t the Muslim citizens of Israel want the opportunity to visit Mecca?

Yes. My quarrel was with the title that said that it was Israel that was finally allowing her citizens to visit Saudi Arabia. My comment was that I didn’t think that Israel barred its citizens from doing so; that it was Saudi Arabia that kept them out.

And how does that differentiate him from every other Republican in the Senate? Some occasionally meekly take an alternative position — but really, have any shown any real courage? They all continue to support a President that they KNOW is owned by Putin — that makes them all traitors.

She’s a good dog

“She wasn’t your typical apprehensive dog,” Rebecca Tate, the founder of Royal Animal Refuge, told CNN. “It was more like she was telling them, “Hey, just come with me.’ She kept stopping and turning around and waiting until they followed her.”
Clover led the volunteers of the non-profit animal shelter to the property where they “smelled death” and, realizing something was wrong, called the sheriff’s office, Tate said.

In criminal trials, the prosecution gets the last word, because the burden of proof falls to them. But in the Senate the self-declared Trump loyalist Senators get the last word. This on top of Trumps successful efforts at hiding most evidence, discouraging the needed testimony. His lawyer lies about the facts with impunity, while a massive burden of perfection is aimed at the House.

Our democracy is on trial as much as Donald johnnie Trump.

Impeachment Diary, Opinion
Trump’s lawyers are absolutely entitled to their own facts, Dana Milbank, WaPo

For three days, impeachment managers presented the facts to the Senate. On Saturday, the president’s lawyers presented the alternative facts.
As outlined in two hours on the Senate floor, theirs is a world in which Ukraine interfered in the U.S. election in 2016; where the FBI and intelligence community are disreputable; where the United States, not Europe, gives Ukraine the bulk of its foreign aid; where there was no quid pro quo with Ukraine and where a “transcript” of President Trump’s call conclusively proves it; where the halt of military aid to Ukraine was routine, and where Ukrainian officials didn’t even know about it; where the president was barred from impeachment proceedings; and where Robert Mueller totally vindicated Trump.
The late Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said that “everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.” Moynihan was wrong. Very likely a majority of senators will, with their votes to acquit, conclude that Trump and his lawyers are perfectly entitled to their own facts.

Absolutely. They hate each other’s guts on the court, but will have drinks afterwards. And when the older ones retire, there is respect given to them for life. I see it very night at Rockets games. Hakeem Olajuwon has been retired now for close to twenty years, and pre-game every player from the opposing team shakes his hand or gives him a hug. Every time.

Baseball is my poetry. I’m 32 but I still dream about being on the mound trying to get out of a jam in the bottom of the 9th inning against the heart of the order. I’d give up a home run obviously IRL but in my dream of dreams, I’m Mike Mussina or Greg Maddux or Mariano Rivera, stoic as hell and completely calm armed only with my stuff and grit.

If I were to fantasize about a baseball moment I’d want to be mine… it’s Kirk Gibson, 1988 World Series, bottom of the 9th, team down 4-3, player on 1st. The man can barely walk, pulled left hamstring, swollen right knee. Two strikes and then… HOME RUN. Limps around the bases, team wins 5-4.

Yeah that is most people’s dream too. However, I discovered I was afraid of inside fastballs when I was 10 :). The Gibson-Eck home run though, it’s the stuff of legends. To add to mmmirele’s excellent post from last thread…

Some interesting points about the “Spanish Influenza” from the book “The Great Influenza” By John Barry.

1. The medical profession was just starting to professionalize. There were still practicing doctors who had entered the profession under the ‘old’, less scientifically rigorous criteria.

2. Science was just beginning to figure out that viruses even existed. Understanding the rapidity of flu virus mutation and that it could jump across species boundaries took decades of further research.

3. The deadliest issue with the later mutations of the pandemic flu was that it triggered a massive immune reaction in humans. That also meant that the healthiest humans were the ones most likely to become gravely ill.

4. Author Barry subscribes to the theory that the pandemic flu originated on a swine farm in Kansas. He also believes that the first wave of flu was far milder than the later waves.

re: #323 mmmirele

Back in the early 1980s, when I went to university, the pandemic of 1918-1919 had been pretty much forgotten. One of the few scholars was historian Alfred Crosby, who taught at my alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin, and wrote a book called “America’s Forgotten Pandemic.”

People know more about pandemics today than they did four decades ago, and about the 1918-1919 flu, we know quite a lot. Scientists have even exhumed bodies buried in Alaskan permafrost to collect samples of the virus. But we still don’t know the source—it’s been alternately speculated to have been France, Kansas (Crosby), or China. The 1918-1919 pandemic is known to be an H1N1 virus with possible avian origins.

I have a bad feeling we may be looking at another awful pandemic.

Oh, there’s a science fiction novel called “The Doomsday Book” by Connie Willis. It’s a time travel novel but in the background is a massive killing pandemic in the present (2054-2055) day.

Ugh. So sorry to hear that.

My dad had diabetes, Parkinson’s, and arthritis on top of everything else. That last two weeks he just fell apart. He fell out of bed early one morning was stuck in a praying position at the bed for three hours until I kicked down the door to get to him.

When the EMTs got there and got him in a sitting position, they lifted his shirt and his stomach was all bloated and yellow. When we asked how long that had been going on, he nonchalantly replied a month.

One of his drinking buddies may have accidentally let slip that Dad knew he had it for a while, but I was too distracted for that to register until later that day.

Sorry to bring the thread down. There’s probably nothing we could have done, but I’m still angry about the whole thing.

Bernie will join McGovern and Mondale in the One State Plus DC Club.

Do you seriously believe states like california, massachusetts, NY, NJ and probably a dozen others would ever vote for Trump regardless of who the Dem candidate is? We live in polarized times and that just isn’t going happen.

It will be that bad. Friend still active in Democratic politics told me that they got a hold on the Frank Luntz dossier on Bernie and it’s a GOP wet dream. Luntz outlined dozens of attacks on Bernie and if they used that it will not only sink Bernie but take down lots of Democrats for Senate, House, Governors, state legislators and local candidates. It’s far more devastating than what they did to McGovern and Mondale.

If this comes to pass, it basically means that the entire country just hopelessly and endlessly conservative to the point of no return. The only thing Reagan and Trump have in common appeal-wise is the cultish fervor from their supporters. If Trump would be able to pull off that kind of win, even as stratified and polarized as the lines are drawn at this point, it basically means that any support for Dems is about a millimeter deep while conservative support is truly endless. It’ll be the deathknell of any hope other than eternal conservitopia.

That seems right; however, today I was engaging in one of my favorite pastimes — visiting open houses that I never plan to buy. My coat sports a “Democrat for President” button. The realtor for the open house admired my button and said she agreed entirely. I laughed and said that, for me, it applied to everyone except Tulsi — and she dissented and said she would vote for ANY Democrat. It is possible that, just like the Trump cult doesn’t care about any facts, Bernie will get elected because a sufficient number of Americans are so angry they won’t care and will treat any of the facts against Bernie as lies. After all, how does anyone know what is true these days.

Not only does he get his facts wrong, but he comes off like a muckraker trying to stake claim on a scoop, not a leader. No condolences, no expression of grief or sympathy, no show of honor for Kobe’s existence at all, just a shallow ‘This is Terrible!’ like he’s going through the motions, like Willy Wonka. Bernie will lose every state except his own.

I disagree. HRC won the popular vote by over 3 million and that was with 30+ years of right wing vilifying, a number of independents voting for Trump expecting him to become more presidential, and Jill Stein taking votes. I think that Warren would win easily. Biden would win as well, but I don’t think he’s what we need right now.

Yeah right wingers have always been ugly to the NBA. It’s the only league in the big four where PoC really exist throughout the league in players, coaches, & executives in large numbers. Not to mention their passion for social causes. Lebron has never so much as gotten a speeding ticket and is as respected off the court as on because we all remember that kid from Akron competing with twilight MJ for tv time. That was a big part of my sophomore year. The same year my own high school began going to the state finals with a freshman wunderkid of our own that later attended Villanova and got them into the final four.

When they decide to do Kobe’s funeral, it’s literally going to be as large as a President’s would be. Trump will look at that, and know deep down in his empty black heart that when he takes his dirt nap, no one will bother to show up to his.

A big crowd will show up to piss on his grave.

I’m so glad I was at D&D rather than joining in the periodic “how the Democrats will lose” that went on earlier. No, no Democrat (or even Democratic Socialist) is going to lose CA, MA, VA, NY, or a whole lot of other states. And Democrats are going to show up in force because not only do they know what’s on the line, but there are a whole lot of Democrats running for office in places that Democrats didn’t run. A woman can and will be elected if she’s nominated

VA I can’t say for sure but I still believe even Bernie is safe for 150-200 EVs. As I said, there’s a big base ready to vote against Trump. My argument with Sanders has never been electable based, it’s been presidential leadership based. I too think a woman could win.

He is. Those in the Democratic circles who didn’t want Pelosi to be Speaker last January I think should look at themselves next times. She’s got good political instincts. One of the coolest things I heard was that Kobe learned some Slovenian I believe to talk with Luka Doncic. Slovenian only has a language of 2.5 million speakers. To put things in perspective, 2/3’s of our states have more people than that. But Kobe like many NBA players is a fan of the game as much as he his own accomplishments which is why instead of bemoaning Lebron moving over him last night, he was there to celebrate it.

Absolutely. This quite honestly is one of the most disturbing executive branch scandals I’ve ever seen. It’s worse than Watergate IMO. It would be if CREEP had gotten South Vietnam to investigate McGovern in exchange for military aid during Vietnam. As scummy as Nixon was, even he wouldn’t have done that IMO.

But to win in 1968, Nixon interfered with Johnson’s peace process. True, it may have gone nowhere, but it could have succeeded - sparing 10’s of thousands of American and Vietnamese lives, and possibly preventing the ascension of Pol Pot in Cambodia, thereby sparing a million lives.

I’m aware of that. I know my history. The point is that Nixon did not use South Vietnam’s sovereignty as a bargaining chip. That was a fucking scummy thing to do but it’s not the same as “if you don’t get dirt on my opponent, I’ll cut off aid to you.” I know some people don’t like pointing out how Trump is uniquely malicious because they think I’m somehow donwplaying his predecessors’ fuckups as President but this really is it clear as day.

I think we have to bear two things in mind, both very important for events going forward:

1. John Bolton is not a hero in any way. If not for somebody in the WH leaking this draft manuscript, we likely would never have read these words until after Trump had been “acquitted.” The man had every opportunity to come forward and say these words to the American people, he chose instead to make a buck on revealing the truth after it would have been relevant. He deserves every bit of scorn he receives.

2. Even with these revelations, don’t get your hopes up that anything will really change. Mitch has his mission: “Acquit” his boss and do it before the SOTU. Senate Repubs will crawl over broken glass and hot coals to make that happen. So the most we can hope for is that the damage done from the shrapnel this bombshell produces is enough to swing the election in November.

To put another way, Trump’s actions were if FDR had told the Brits during Lend-Lease, sure we’ll give you assistance from the Nazis but you have to give me dirt on Wendell Wilkie. That’s what Trump did here guys and I cannot think of any scandal that resembles it. You can argue that Trump hasn’t caused as much bloodshed as some of his predecessors and that’s fair though I would argue that we still don’t know the result of Trump’s fuck ups. After all, Pol Pot aforementioned was not on our radar in 1969. The danger of what Trump has done is something deeper than that. It’s a destroying of the credibility of the American people in the eyes of the world.

The one that will make the family money by putting up a facade of respectability. Don Jr is the political one. You will note that Don Jr and not Ivanka attacks his father’s opponents as well as making contacts in the alt-right sphere. so…. the cover up is leaking like a sieve… we have oodles of senior GOP’s claiming, shrilly even, that there was no quid pro quo… despite Trump saying it, Mulvaney saying it, the House impeachment witnesses saying it and the “transcript” implying it. Now we have video and audio courtesy of Lev “Zelig” Parnas and Bolton’s soon to be published recollections added on top of all of this and the incredulity of the GOP continuing to toe this particular line is looking less and less likely although, we’ve seen the GOP and 45 double down on equally shitty hands, so who’s to say, they still have their multiple broadcasting networks and various shills to keep fucking that chicken, but even the wired-for-the GOP narrative free-pres is starting to catch on…

Speaking of mobsters, there has still been no apparent reprisal for the murder of reputed Gambino boss Francesco Cali by a Q-Anon dupe. The real mafia are known to take their time with these things though.
I would think that the assholes who incited the killer might be as vulnerable as the killer himself, maybe more so since they are not in protective custody. They would also be at least as guilty in Mafia eyes. Would retaliation only prove that the Q-ers are right, which is the standard conspira-liar explanation for why they are not assassinated by the evil forces they purport to expose? Not really, it would only “prove” that Cali had Mafia connections, which is hardly in doubt to begin with. Rather reminds me of the old movie Conspiracy Theory, in which a lying nutcase inadvertently finds himself on the wrong side of some actual conspirators.

One gets the impression that the show’s staff realized that last season landed with a thud and are desperately trying to get fans to come back.

Not the first time Doctor Who has revisited old lines.

I think the biggest thing hurting the show is the Sunday slot.

I think the biggest thing hurting the show is the Sunday slot.

The whole big selling point of the new leadership and new Doctor was “We’re moving on from the past, we’re bringing in new villains and new ideas.” And the first season of this ends with a lot of talk about how the new Doctor and new leadership might end up taking a hike, followed by a hiatus longer than any seen since the Tennant days. No Christmas special and the New Year’s special brings back the Daleks. And the new season is name-checking old villains and old storylines left and right.

They tried the whole “We’re moving past Old Who” bit before and it generally fell flat. Capaldi’s second season had them make a big fuss about how they were getting rid of the sonic screwdriver, were gonna have him solving problems without using the sonic every episode. That lasted less than a season before they gave him a new screwdriver and you could argue that they never really held to the promise because of the “sonic sunglasses.”

I’m so old, I remember when Bernie declared that he had no control over his supporters. You know, back in 2016, when he knew they were savaging his opponent but couldn’t give a flying fuck because they were hurting her poll numbers. And even adopted some of their talking points, such as going after her for “HER SPEECHES!” when he insisted he was all about “the issues.”

Joe Bacon 🌹  Jan 26, 2020 • 7:05:03pm

What really disgusted me in 2016 were the Bernie delegates who had a “bean supper” and boasted they would fart whenever Hillary was mentioned.

Oh and those California Bernie delegates who screamed “Lock Her Up” when Hillary was nominated alienated me even further!

Similarly in the trial I sat on the jury of back in ‘15, I found I had no choice but to acquit because the prosecution had failed to ensure their expert witness had the qualification necessary to offer an expert opinion about crucial evidence. Though, given that my fellow jurors almost immediately started in on the “she wanted it, then changed her mind out of guilt” bit that the Southern-fried defense lawyer had pounded into the ground like a tent peg, it was unlikely even that evidence being in the record would have gone anywhere.

I was on a civil trial jury in 2017. We had to find for the defendant Big Satellite TV Company against the plaintiffs, the satellite dish installers, because the installers could not present a key piece of evidence, which was that their daily HOURS (not the number of jobs they did) were being tracked by their employers. It made me sick, but within the confines of what we were asked to do, we had to find for Big Satellite TV Company.

For the record, Big Satellite TV Company did not present a case (as is their right). They made their point in the cross-examination of plaintiff’s witnesses.

I sent an email to Martha McSally, telling her that Arizonans wanted witnesses called, and if she didn’t vote to call witnesses, I was going to make a point of telling everyone that Martha McSally didn’t want the truth.

Hey - is it too late in the day to revisit the “could Bernie win against Trump” thread from earlier? Because I have some thoughts.

I am not a Berner, not at all. As with others here, I have serious misgivings about Bernie’s skill set when it comes to most of the important duties of the presidency. He’s a shitty judge of people, too susceptible to flattery, a terrible diplomat and… well, you all know.

Here’s what I do see, though: I think a Bernie candidacy in the general would bring out a very different Democratic coalition from the Hillary coalition (which would in turn become the Biden or Warren or Klobuchar or Pete coalition in 2020, most likely.)

He’ll gain the hardcore socialists who probably weren’t Hillary voters in 2016. Sanders as nominee would blunt any sort of third-party run to the left. There won’t be Jill shills (or Tulski tools) if Sanders is the D nominee, or at least there won’t be any in enough numbers to do the damage Stein did in the midwest in 2016. So that’s a good thing.

He’ll get more energy from younger voters. That’s important, too. It could even be very important - IF it comes with a push downballot, too, to bring out the younger voters who could take out a McConnell or a Ben Sasse or enough other Rs to take the Senate. But downballot isn’t Bernie’s thing, of course, and how many of his cult members will vote for Bernie and not even bother with the rest of the ballot because it’s not Saint Bernie’s name there?

He’ll get a few disgruntled Trump 2016 voters, the ones who hate “the system” and are inclined to look for someone to topple it. I don’t think that’s a huge number of real-world voters, though, and probably not enough to swing any states one way or the other for him.

But the Democratic tent is a big one, with a lot of constituencies he’d have to work harder to get than a nominee like Biden or Klobuchar.

Black voters, we know about. They’re going to be so essential everywhere, especially if there’s any hope of unseating a Lindsay Graham in SC or (equally iffy) flipping GA or TX blue. If I had no other reason to not want Bernie as the nominee, this would be it - except there’s more.

There’s the category I call “my mom.” Mid-70s. Always, ALWAYS votes. Pretty much always votes blue. When I see Berners complain “the DNC sabotaged Bernie in 2016,” I think about mom and her friends. The DNC didn’t do Bernie in. My mom and tens of millions of other 70-something women did him in, because they’ve put up with crotchety 70-plus men like my dad - I mean, Bernie - for their entire adult lives and, dammit, it was Hillary’s turn this time. When the Bernie cult excludes them entirely from their narrative of 2016, that’s problematic. And it will be problematic for building enthusiasm and turnout for Bernie in 2020.

I don’t think any coalition that doesn’t include minority voters and “my mom” is going to be big enough to win the general and take back the Senate. What I worry about is whether a coalition that doesn’t include Bernie’s young socialists (and the smaller subset of crotchety old men who seem to be his most loyal base) will be big enough, either.

Stepping stone is probably more accurate. Just as Taylor and Hill put Bolton in the spotlight by testifying as to his remarks made during the events in question, his manuscript is now making it clear that the bigger fish were active participants. Having him testify at this point would just raise the pressure to seek their testimony.

So Don Jr was definitely in the Parnas talks. Here’s my two cents since a lot of people think Ivanka’s Trump’s successor in his family. Ivanka I think is Trump’s business successor. The one that will make the family money by putting up a facade of respectability. Don Jr is the political one. You will note that Don Jr and not Ivanka attacks his father’s opponents as well as making contacts in the alt-right sphere. He’s the one auditioning to replace his father as the political face of the Trump dynasty.

That’s not that much of a surprise to me. Handing the crown to Ivanka would be considered almost literally sacrilege by half his base, after all, because they act as though Paul of Tarsus’s words deserve red letters even more than Yeshua ben-Yosef’s.

And some of them would have a problem with Jared being the figurehead because it would be obvious from the past half-decade that he was.

Pompeo is an interesting one though. Read an article on how he’s got ties to three key parts of the GOP machine. One as you got at is his Evangelical ties, two obviously are his Trump ties, three and this hasn’t been touched on but the Koch PACs heavily financed some of his early candidacies.
