re: #10 Belafon

Secretaries of states are usually experienced on the big stage. This guy is a Tea Party product. Contrast that with his predecessors. Hell even Tillerson wasn’t completely out of whack though it was very telling Trump made an oil executive our top diplomat.
Early on the primary season, I wholeheartedly joined “Team Warren.” I felt that not only was the she best candidate to actually be president, but that she had the best chance of beating Trump. I was in. I was enthusiastic and I was ready to fight for her and the America I felt she would lead.
And although none of the things I loved about Warren changed, I found my enthusiasm for her wane in the last couple of months. It is not so much that I like Warren less, but somehow I find myself wondering if other candidates might be better to support.
Polls suggest that I am not alone.
So this past weekend, I made myself really take apart what changed my mind. Why did I go from “Team Warren” to team “not so sure”?
I realized that this all started when the tension broke out between her and Bernie. I started seeing negative things written about Warren by people who like Bernie and, while the arguments didn’t change my feelings about her, the fact that people were arguing worried me a lot.
The scars of 2016 are deep and fresh. And a part of me thought, “maybe it would be safer to have Bernie rather than risk people who like him staying home.” Or, “maybe Biden would be better because he is always the strongest against Trump in the polls.”
Instead of following my heart and mind and sticking with the candidate who I really believe would both be best as president AND would be able to beat Trump, I was worrying more about what other people would feel and how other people would act and how to make other people happy.
Of course, I was. That is how women are raised to think. We want everyone to be happy. We feel uncomfortable choosing a course of action that makes people we care about angry or upset.
And that is why I think Warren has been sliding recently. It isn’t that she wouldn’t be a great president (she would) or that she couldn’t win (she could) but things got *uncomfortable* in the race and women are taught to hate discomfort when it happens with their friends and allies. We are raised to do all we can to make that discomfort go away. And if supporting Biden or Bernie or Pete will do that then… we’ll switch. This unconscious desire to not rock the boat and not make our friends mad is powerful and I think it is pulling support from Warren.
Intra-party fighting makes Bernie and Biden supporters draw even closer to their candidates and champion them even more. But because of deeply ingrained gender norms, it makes some Warren supporters uncomfortable on a level we can’t even verbalize and it makes us change our attitudes: just a little perhaps, but just enough to see her slip in the polls.
For me, realizing where my uncertainty came from has been freeing. I am done with that. I am done worrying about making others uncomfortable. I am done questioning my preferences because of how they might make others feel.
I am on team Warren for this primary season. I will vote for her, campaign for her, and encourage others to do so.
Because it is easy to see why Warren would be a great president. She has plans for everything. The plans are smart, evidence based, and filled with both heart and reason. Is every plan perfect? Nope. But they are all strong and they are all starting points for actually using her presidency — from day one — to make a difference. It isn’t just talk with Warren.
I can somewhat understand this. My mother was an emotionally abusive person when I was a kid. She had a short temper - she mimicked her father that way - and I learned to quickly work out how to recognize things that could make her angry (my dad hat PTSD from Vietnam that manifest itself as monthly seizures through the early 2/3 of my childhood). So I can be very quick in deciding to change things when it gets uncomfortable.

To be fair, Barr does that with Sessions. Tillerson was a tyrant at the State Department too. I’ll grant that he stood up against Trump’s worser impulses and outbursts but it’s like going from a D- to a F.
The problem is Trump doesn’t have any delegation skills. This is something I’m trying to warn people about Sanders as opposed to Warren and Biden. You want a President who will surround himself with capable minds not yes men and women. Trump’s early cabinets had some fairly reasonable picks but as the babysitters I’ll call them leave, we get like the chaos of having Mulvaney be both head of OPM and Chief of Staff. And worse, they even acknowledge Trump likes the acting Secretaries because he thinks it gives him flexibility. I’ve worked at a federal agency. A small one and in a small department no less but continuity matters.
BTW all the doublespeak by the Republicans should show once again that the Tea Party movement was nothing but an astroturfing sham designed to weaken Obama’s Congressional majority. None of these frauds cared about Obama having too much power. It was who Obama was.

Extremely difficult to believe Bolton’s team didn’t leak it since yesterday had all the hallmarks of a coordinated rollout; title reveal, juicy quotes, just as the website and Amazon pre-orders both went live. Not that it really matters how it got out, and the nominal mystery helps sow more paranoia into Trump’s brain about leakers within his inner circle, which in turn further poisons morale within the WH.

One of my favorite scenes in “2” is early in the film when Sen. Geary tries to shakedown Michael. Michael already knows everything he needs to know about Geary as we learn later in the film. The lighting on Geary’s face as he turns the cannon towards Michael is another gem.

I was just going to comment on Geary. The one act he does to the public where he purposely butchers the Corleone surname at Anthony’s holy communion in Tahoe and then his true act in that scene you speak of. I like watching that more than any high budget action scene because it’s a great example as Michael explained it “Senator, we’re part of the same hypocrisy.” Geary as a character reminds me of Lindsay Graham. I remember he was one of the few Republicans who was cordial towards and even voted for Justice Kagan’s confirmation but we’ve also see how ugly he was to Dr. Ford during Kavanaugh,

Yeah I’ve never seen it in chronological order. I like the non linear too because it’s a perfect contrast between father and son. Lots of great scenes, my favorite is either Don Fanucci being tracked on the rooftop or when Vito gets revenge for his family. But I love the opening scene in Ellis Island with all the ethnic groups. That era was when my mom’s parents arrived and I imagine them always during that scene. It’s super idealistic compared with the rest of the film.

I was not aware that Rep. Fortney (Pete) Stark, the former California representative who served his district for forty years until he was primaried by Eric Swalwell, died a couple days ago.
He was the first openly atheistic congressman. Swalwell primaried him for voting against “In God We Trust” to replace “E Pluribus Unum” as the national motto.
Amongst other achievements, Rep. Stark worked on the legislation to create the COBRA insurance program, and the ACA.
Working as a banker in the Sixties, he promoted a very progressive employment programme at the time, offering day-care and bus service for his largely African-American workforce.
Former California Congressman Pete Stark dies at 88 (San Francisco Chronicle).
My only personal contact with Rep. Stark was when he was scheduled to be a guest on the Tacoma, Wash. radio show “Ask an Atheist.” A problem came up where he couldn’t be on the show, and I was asked to appear on it for an interview instead. (That kind of tells you how hard it is for atheists to get elected.)

As far as Kentucky goes, they are essentially in the general election season already, since McConnell doesn’t have to worry about a primary challenger.
He does have to worry about the fact he’s stuck in Washington and Amy McGrath is free to travel all over the state and be available to local media.

I’d heard this, I’ll put it on me weekend list
(Goes to The Independent)
Turkey’s ‘marry your rapist’ law has taken women’s rights right back to the 1950s
This bill will release scores of men who have been sentenced for committing statutory rape - Turkish newspaper Hürriyet estimates this currently stands at around 4000 - on the condition they marry their victim. Whether there will be a limit as to the age difference between the two parties is still undecided. If there is to be one, it will be set at either 10 or 15 years - a small, yet still utterly detestable, concession.
This whole bill is detestable. In fact, even that word fails to convey the absolute anger, horror and disgust felt towards the bill by many women - and men - of Turkish heritage. In an age where sexual harassment against women is finally becoming taboo, where countries who have a more conservative culture, such as Palestine or Egypt, are finally repealing easy escapes for rapists, why would you bring in such a law? Why would you take such a step back? And it is a huge step back for Turkey. In 2004, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s AK Party actually doubled the sentence for child abusers and removed the very law they are now bringing back.

My twisted pair telephone cable is new, as the last tornado we had took out my telephone line.
My speed is horrendously slowed by the fact my ISP is in Jefferson City, Mo., hundreds of miles away.
CenturyLink puts my speed as:
Download: 9.3Mb/s
Upload: 800kb/s

That’s not too bad for phone line. I’m lucky as our fiber comes within a half mile of the house and I’m getting full speed due to the shorter wire. I worked on high speed backbones over twisted pair for traffic signal control and monitoring, it’s pretty amazing if we got 8 Mb/s over our own cable between repeaters at about a mile separation.
re: #90 Anymouse 🌹🎃
That got me curious, so I just tested mine; I’m at 15.49 Mbps download, 26.57 Mbps upload.
I’m at 30/2, unless it’s raining, then I may not have anything. Fucking AT&T.

The bad part is how much Internet service costs here. With the monopoly on service, CenturyLink charges a whole bunch of money.
Back when I was on the village board, a Colorado company presented a plan to our board to install wireless service on top of our water tower. They would provide service to all village government offices (the village clerk, the library, and the fire brigade). They would also install an upgraded electrical system at the water tower to power their system.
The wireless service would be powerful enough to encompass a lot of the rural area around the village.
After some back and forth over a couple months, we agreed to their contract to rent space on our water tower.
As soon as the lease was approved by the village board and the company, they upgraded the electrical system at the water tower and installed the antennae necessary to provide their service. The trick to use it would be a home or business would have to have a direct line-of-sight to the water tower with no significant obstacles (like a sandhill) to use the service. That limits the range to about seven miles or so.
The day after they completed their installation, we were hit by a tornado and all their equipment was destroyed.
It took several months, but they came back and replaced their equipment and started providing service.
The problem is they aren’t much cheaper than CenturyLink, and people still need telephones (a service which that company does not provide). There are a few people in town who signed up for it, along with people outside of town, and they seem satisfied with it.
The village clerk, library, and fire brigade’s service are free, saving the village and the not-for-profit which runs our fire department a considerable sum of money.

Your 26.57 Mb/s upload versus my 800kb/s. CenturyLink calls my service “High Speed Internet” though. (They have lower speed plans.)
re: #94 Anymouse 🌹🎃
It’s not cheap here, either. I pay about $100, but I do pay extra for no cap, as we use about 20 TB a month. I think the base cap is 600 GB.

I have no data cap with the telephone company. I don’t think they have one with any of their plans. I have no idea how much data we use (between YouTube and Hulu, plus me running BOINC science projects on my laptop, probably quite a bit).
Few people in town have Internet service either because they aren’t interested in it or don’t have the money to pay for it (and they can use the public library for free).
As for wire telephone service (since almost no one in town can use Viero’s cell tower four blocks from my house because the signal is oriented up and down the highway and doesn’t cover most of the town), most of us are Luddites and have dial telephones.

My ISP is Poda, a local network here in the Moravian Silesia region, though in my city, there are other ISP’s as well, both big and small.
I currently pay 500 Kč/month for home internet, which comes out to about $22/month. Only ever had two outages* in the almost seven years I’ve been using Poda….so they’re pretty damn reliable.
*Both of the outages lasted less than 90 minutes.

$22? Sign me up.
We were having three or four outages a week for a long time. (I complained about that here in the past.) CenturyLink recently upgraded their equipment in our central telephone office and that seems to have fixed the problem. Now we only get a few interruptions a month.

Heh, so as I said, in winter we have phone line problems. Our internet speed was getting spastic so I reset the modem to see if it could negotiate a better speed. it came back, but without phone service. Outside the house and our modem the phone line is fully digital. the modem decodes that and creates a VPN for Internet, and a VPN for VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol (Internet Digital Telephone)). The modem generates the “phone line” and the phone connects to it. We called AT&T and they were able to reset the phone line through their system.

I dunno, I just pick up the handset and dial a number. While I’ve had many Internet service problems, I’ve never had trouble with my telephone service except when a tornado took out our line (that is probably beyond CenturyLink’s control).

An egalitarian marriage is one where marital chores are roughly shared equally (such as childrearing or laundry or dishes).
Lori Alexander consistently harps on women to stay at home, raise children, and keep house, while her husband provides for her through outside work. (Note that doesn’t apply to Lori Alexander, who has a prominent YouTube channel, frequently lectures, is beyond childrearing age herself, and is very wealthy.)
She is also opposed to things like women getting an education beyond high school, feeling it is ungodly. (She has a college degree.)

I am the dishwasher. Much cheaper than a machine which does it, so where I put them is where they go. I did negotiate with my wife (you’re never supposed to do that according to Lori Alexander, the man is supposed to lay down the household law) on where to put things so they would be easier to get when she cooks, due to her limited mobility.

US televangelist Jack Van Impe declared a in televised sermon on January 10:
It’s going to be the bloodiest war in the world. The blood will flow to the bridles of the horses for 200 miles.
Eight days later he died.
There’s a great deal about this lunatic on Christianity Today, but the only interesting thing that jumped out at me was that his paranoia proved too much for the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) which had regularly broadcast his cockamamie rants until 2011.
He started attacking other Christian ministers for not taking a strong enough stand against Islam … Van Impe said megachurch pastors Rick Warren and Robert Schuller, both of whom had spoken to Muslim groups, were secretly promoting a merger of Christianity and Islam, or Chrislam.
TBN refused to air the episode and Van Impe separated from the network. The Van Impes continued the show on their own, broadcasting Jack Van Impe Presents on TV and the internet. On January 10, the most recent episode available on the ministry website, Rexella Van Impe read headlines about the heightening conflict between the US and Iran.

He was out there talking about the number of steps in the pyramid to to the bible prophecy. He was Pentecostal. I almost married a Pentecostal woman, thank Satan that never happened.
My first marriage was to a Presbyterian woman. Love seemed to overcome the difference in our religious beliefs.
At first it was fine; neither of us attempted any sort of conversion/deconversion on the other, though we had a number of interesting religious discussions.
Then I developed epilepsy, and she switched to crazy. All of a sudden I was “demon-possessed” (which eventually became the basis of her divorce case and my homelessness).
After that I was not interested in marriage, since I had no way of discerning if another Christian woman would do the same.
Fortunately through a chain of improbable events on the Internet, I met who is now my wife, and found I was not alone as an atheist.
Turns out she had the same problem with her first two husbands (both Christians who decided converting her was more important than her marriage).
We have now been married longer than either my first marriage or her first two.
A Florida man who is the ringleader of a group that has hounded the families of victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting was arrested early Monday morning by sheriffs and charged with unlawful possession of personal identification of another person.Wolfgang Halbig has spent years trying to show the shooting was a hoax and that the 20 children who died were actually actors — as recently as the last few weeks he posted photos of children that he claimed were actually current photos of the victims. Halbig was arrested at 1:39 a.m. at his Sorrento, Florida home, according to the police report.
Halbig is accused of publishing and circulating Pozner’s personal information including his social security number and home address. Pozner has moved several times since leaving Connecticut after the shooting.
Halbig is also a defendant in the civil lawsuit filed by Sandy Hook victims families against Alex Jones, the host of the Infowars internet radio program. The families are suing Jones for claiming the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School that claimed the lives of 20 first graders and six educators was a hoax, and argue that he profited by spreading the hoax claim.

After being banned from Liverpool, people are trying to get Franklin Graham banned from his big event at the O2 arena in London.
The petition, organized by action group All Out had initially claimed that Graham would be speaking at The O2, which it noted has the capacity to hold an audience of 20,000.
However, on Tuesday morning, Stephanie Moses, the head of communications for The O2, told Newsweek that while Graham may have had an interest in holding the event there, no deal was ever made and the event would not be happening at the premises.
Asked why that was, Moses said: “It’s not very us…It’s just not an event we would take.”
While it is still unclear where Graham might host his London event, if at all, Moses’ comments come after plans for a similar speaking event in Liverpool were canceled after protesters brought his anti-LGBT+ sentiments to light.

My dipweed state senator has proposed eliminating both the state income tax and property taxes (Steve Erdman, R-District 47)
He’s trying to snowball people by funding the whole state with a re-named sales tax.
LR 300CA, the EPIC Tax Plan proposed by Erdman would eliminate property tax in its entirety, in addition to individual and corporate income taxes, and inheritance taxes. Those would be replaced by a consumption tax.
A consumption tax, also called an expenditures tax, is a tax on what people spend rather than what they earn, Erdman said.
The bill is in the form of a constitutional amendment that, if approved by the Legislature, will appear on the 2020 general election ballot for consideration by the voters.

“Well Rabbi, I am here in a Bible study, and we are studyin’ about the Rapture. Are you familiar with the Rapture?”
“Yes, I am, Mr. Higgins.”
“Well, before the Second Coming, Jesus is gonna appear and all good Christians are gonna be swept into heaven, and the only people left on earth are gonna be the Jews and the atheists. Now don’t you worry, Rabbi, before the Second Coming, God’s gonna take care of the Jews too. So, when the Rapture comes, I need me a Jew to take care of my dog. I don’t want my dog being raised by no atheist.” (emphasis mine)

Bibi got indicted.
It could take many months before the trial starts. And even if convicted, Mr Netanyahu would not be required to step down as prime minister until the appeals process was exhausted - something that could take years.
Sounds like the Knesset needs to pass a law stating that once a government minister has been indicted, he or she must relinquish their ministerial position immediately (they can still continue as an MK, however - after all, they were democratically elected to that position).
I’ve suggested such a law be passed here in the Czech Republic, but the usual reply I get is, “Yeah, but then we’d have no government whatsoever!” To which my reply is, “Then quit electing criminals!”

Sounds like the Knesset needs to pass a law stating that once a government minister has been indicted, he or she must relinquish their ministerial position immediately (they can still continue as an MK, however - after all, they were democratically elected to that position).

16 year gap between films too. Plus I think Pacino’s Michael wasn’t as strong as it had been in GF1/2. Not as good supporting characters either IMO but I’d still give GF 3 a 6-7/10.
Yeah, that 16-year gap didn’t help much either. Pacino’s Michael Corleone was pitch perfect in Godfather 2; I remember my ex saying his performance sent a chill down her spine. I’d rank that as one of the greatest acting performances of all time.

Yeah I never get tired watching the contrast with DeNiro’s Vito and Pacino’s Michael. You just didn’t get that in 3 and 16 years is a long time. Plus no Hagen was disappointing. Hagen’s always been one of my favorite characters in the series given the way he goes in between the legitimate and underworld with ease that say someone like Luca Brazi could not.
re: #64 Dr Lizardo
I’d bet that behind closed doors, the Republicans are shitting themselves over all this. How did they not see this coming? What did they think was going to happen when they summarily acquitted Trump without witnesses and then all the evidence of Trump’s flagrant criminality comes out anyway, making it even more obvious that their trial was a sham?
What did they think was going to happen when they staked their reputations on, and hitched their political fortunes to, DONALD FUCKING TRUMP?
I think what they “thought” was going to happen IS (unfortunately and disgracefully) what actually IS going to happen - they (GOP) are going to try to conduct the Senate trial as “normally” as possible - notwithstanding that it’s a rigged game from the get-go - vote (along reliably partisan lines) NOT to remove Trump, and then hope that, having got the impeachment matter out the way in January February, can move on to their usual practice of obstructing House legislation, ramming RW judicial nominations through: and working on their (and Trump’s) campaigns: on the assumption that by November, the voting public will have “moved on”. Or not, it will make no difference, since Mitch McConnell (unfortunately and disgracefully, the main power player in Washington now) doesn’t - as has been amply demonstrated - care in the least about anything other than the blatant leverage of political power.

They did make fun of the Trumper worldview wehre everyone else is stupid but Trump but of course they’re trying to twist it that Wilson was making fun of average Americans. I wasn’t offended by it. More making fun of the fact that Trump’s people convince themselves that no oe knows more than him and his guys even though they don’t.

I imagine a lot of shit that will make the Democratic President’s job more difficult so they can set themselves up for a comeback in 2022.
Best case scenario is this: The Republicans lose the Senate, McGrath beats Mitch, and of course the Dems win the Presidency. At this point, I think one of them is very likely, two possible, and all three unlikely but it will be interesting how Mitch plays it since he’s not as popular as Trump is in his homestate but at the same time, he’s dealing with McGrath who is letting people know why he doesn’t care for average Kentuckians with how he treats sick miners for example.
I’m headed off to bed. The sun is coming up. Catch y’all later.

A lot of lameduck stuff that if Obama had even considered it between November 2016 and January 2017, Mitch would have howled up a storm about. Mitch is one of the worst actors in the Republican Senate. It’s all about power for him. I really hope the reports are true that he’s angry with the Trump WH though. Let them fight it out between each other while Schumer and the Senate Dems and their candidates can unite. Pelosi is helping that effort since she can say “Look we passed a lot of this stuff but Mitch blocked any votes on this at the behest of a President you all know is corrupt.” Hell even point out that Trump ran on things like improving infrastructure but has done nothing on it.

re: #184 Dr Lizardo

Trump doesn’t know or care about details. He never has. Others do that work. And with national domestic and foreign policy, he doesn’t have a policy shop to create policy beyond a few catchphrases and slogans. The last time he attempted infrastructure week, the “plan” he proposed didn’t even make the cut as vaporware because it was devoid of any substantive suggestions remotely related to the real world.
And now we’re watching him make a DOA proposal for the ME peace process, which remains DOA because Trump didn’t even bother to consult the Palestinians and instead will try to force them to accept a deal that is contingent on them making all the changes, while Israel doesn’t have to do anything. That’s how Trump frittered away our position of being a neutral mediator to help the sides negotiate a deal.

I’m not sure Trump’s (Jared’s?) latest “peace plan” will, indeed, be DOA (unfortunately), since it appears to be, basically, an imprimatur for the Israelis to impose a unilateral “solution”, secure in the knowledge that the US (even if no one else) will have their backs, and be ready to cast blame (as always) on the Palestinians for any resistance.
But it will, at least, appeal to the “Christian Zionist” and “Israel First” lobbies here at home, so there we are….

Donald Trump is the American everyman. He is the living id of FOX news, every collected half-formed idea they broadcast in human form. The American everyman, interviewed endlessly by the NYT, CNN and the Wall Street Journal, is nothing more than an organic regurgitation of some or all of the brain viruses transmitted at them endlessly by their media. That’s what they mean when they say Trump is just like them. His brain absorbs and reflects exactly the same things theirs does.

When he hears something of note, he acts as though no one else knows that this is the case (it’s always the same kind of sentence construction too). He’s so totally closed off from reality that daily briefings are impossible to convey actual information necessary to govern. If you can’t get basics of geography right to know geopolitical situations and why they’re there, you’re in real trouble.
We are in real trouble. No one knows what they’re doing in Trumpworld. Least of all Trump himself.
John Thune translated: “We know he’s guilty. We know he will do it again and again. We know he is in Putin’s pocket. But we will protect him because..party over country.” Just despicable. https://t.co/EEWVEhpB5T

Oh, how I wish the Dems would learn to say this (so far, the only one who comes close to making a similar point is AOC):
Yeah it’s stupid. It was clear as hell that Rick was mocking the Trump supporter who never questions anything he says and thinks everyone is an elitist but Trump and his cronies. And you know what? It’s okay to make fun of people like that especially since they show tehy have no problem with Pompeo bullying a reporter for no reason.
And Trump is meeting with Bibi. Hey, I thought he cared about international corruption.
re: #240 Renaissance_Man
Donald Trump is the American everyman.
Everyman born on third and already leaning off the bag
Trump’s going off on interest rates again.
The Fed should get smart & lower the Rate to make our interest competitive with other Countries which pay much lower even though we are, by far, the high standard. We would then focus on paying off & refinancing debt! There is almost no inflation-this is the time (2 years late)!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 28, 2020
US has been experiencing historically low interest rates for the past few years, and Trump’s done absolutely nothing to address infrastructure. It’s vaporware, lies, and incompetence. Pushing Fed to lower interest rates again is only to help Trump deal with his personal debt load

If McConnell really was blindsided by this - and it’s entirely possible that he was, given Trump’s sickly paranoia - I can’t help but wonder if he’ll get his sweet revenge by allowing Bolton to testify under oath.
I doubt that would happen, but hey, who knows?
We know that Trump doesn’t read. It’s an almost certainty that Trump was totally unaware of the contents of Bolton’s book but the more literate members of his administration were trying to decide what to suppress — and then someone with access who is loyal to our nation (or who prefers Pence) decided to leak it. So Trump was probably as blindsided as McConnell.

How many fixers does Trump have? It really seems that Trump Inc is what the people who despise the Clintons think they are.
re: #190 lawhawk
Pre-Trump, the US had honest mediators who worked hard to find a solution — and every time, the Palestinian leadership was unable to support legitimate plans. Certainly one can argue that if Rabin had not been assassinated or Sharon had not had a stroke, there may have been Israeli leaders who could have closed the deal. But as long as Netanyahu is in charge of Israel or Trump is leading the US, there is no hope for a possible diplomatic solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

That’s consistent with the Christian fundamentalist worldview of Jews. They’re just pawns in their sick fantasies. The Republican Party wonders why they don’t win Jewish voters. Well, when you act like Israel is the only thing that matters and use Israel as a pawn in your belief that the world will end, it tends to piss people off. I’m not Jewish but I can tell when people are feigning concern and that’s always been the case with how most Christian fundamentalists view Israel. Individualism can be a good thing in society. It’s good to encourage people to discover their own identity and what they want to follow but at the same time, I think it isolates people too. Like so much, I think you need balance. Just as I think you need the elements of socialism and capitalism in economics, I think you need the elements of individualism and collective identity in sociology. Let’s take this from the top. Palestinians have spent decades demanding Jerusalem as their capital, all of the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel proper (the part from 1948). Now, what’s Trump offering them?
A map that differs from Oslo how?
Wait, you mean Oslo didn’t have a map other than civil administrative control, and that ultimate borders were meant to be negotiated between the parties.
This isn’t a negotiation. It’s Trump showing everyone once again that all he knows is extortion and threats, and his so-called stick is putting a US embassy where he wants it to go, which wont be where Palestinians want the capital.

I guess coming from a nominal Catholic family, I always saw it like this. American Catholics were for until the Kennedys outsiders in a lot of American society. It wasn’t as bad as the Antisemitism and it sure as hell wasn’t as bad as the hostility towards PoC but there were country clubs that would ban Catholics from membership and there was a suspicion of Catholics in high office. When JFK won, we stopped being outsiders even though we’ve been part of the American experience from the get go. Maryland was a Catholic colony after all and Catholic immigrants and their descendants played a big role in building our cities, railroads, and waterways. So yeah, someone like my Dad’s Mom who like JFK had a grandparent that escaped the Famine or was born to a parent who did, it meant a lot. What the Trumps are is all about their wealth and no perspective. You don’t see Trump going back to Scotland and Germany like JFK did in Ireland and marveling about the American dream and how it’s meant for all of us regardless of our background. And I think the people who despised the Kennedys were often people from the old guard regardless of their own economic background hated that.

I think they did do a great job selling themselves but I think it was more democratic in how it was. The Kennedys never forgot where they started. JFK’s first election was to the part of Boston where his great grandfather first lived after fleeing the Famine for example. It’s hard to articulate but I do think there is a difference. I also don’t think they thought their money made them better. They and I’ll give the Bushes credit here never thought their status made them more better than the average citizen. Both JFK and HW Bush served bravely in WWII for example.

What infuriates me about the right wing Evangelicals is they think just going “We love Israel” is a way to get out of the fact that they have a lot of hostility towards the beliefs held by many (albeit not all) American-Jews. Likening legalized abortion to the Holocaust for example when most America-Jews have expressed support for legalized abortion or state sanctioned and encouraged homophobia when American Jews tend to support LGBT rights, etc. Not to mention the attacks on “coastal elites” and “globalists”.

It’s stunning that some folks are treating the idea that Senate Republicans were “blindsided” by the Bolton bombshell as a real argument. It’s self-incriminating. What really “blindsided” them is that their cover-up for Trump has been upended. New piece: https://t.co/PzWeTgIYQS

The notion that Senate Republicans were “blindsided” by Bolton’s revelations is a sick joke. They always knew what Bolton would tell us — which is *exactly why* they have opposed hearing his testimony so aggressively.

re: #326 Jay C
I really wonder what Gallagher thinks he is going accomplish by doxxing - and publicly insulting - his (former-?) comrades?
Wingnut cred for a show on OANN (I don’t think even Fox is going to want to touch him after this)??
Good: The Donald’s endorsement, AFAWCT, is a sure indicator of defeat at the polls…
I hope so. I think in most of the country that will be true at some point but just as they are still people who hate the Loving v Virginia, theres gonna be pockets of this country that still will think that Trump has been wronged. It’s disgusting but I wouldn’t put it above an asshole like Gallagher to set up shop there and run for a Congressional seat there especially if the Congressman or woman there starts to distance themselves from Trumpism.

Has Bolton been declared public enemy number one now by Team Drump Fox and somebody the POTUS never knew, that Bolton only got coffee, etc?

Dobbs borrowed some poster board from Glenn Beck and disclosed that Bolton has ties to Mitt Romney. He didn’t disclose that Lou Dobbs also has ties to John Bolton and so does Donald Trump. FNC really is everyday becoming more apparent it’s out of Orwell’s worst nightmares. The clock has been near 13:00 there for years but now it’s 13:00 there all the time.
Bibi abandons quest to be anointed King of Israel, will be indicted and face trial for corruption. We have to wait another year before Trump can be indicted. bloomberg.com
re: #324 Patricia Kayden
Wow. In a video posted to Facebook on Monday, Eddie Gallagher referred to some members of his former platoon as “cowards” and highlighted names, photos and their duty status and current units, potentially putting them in jeopardy.
Have they paid the price for betrayal yet?

John Kelly is next to go on the enemies list.
Part of me wants to laugh at how absurd Fox is but another part of me is like “Okay, is this how Stalinism worked” where someone who was once an ally gets tarnished as an enemy. We often talk about Stalinism as an economic and foreign policy ideology. That is rapid industrialization and collectivization of agriculture and bullying smaller nations but it was a social ideology too. Trotsky, whom I’m no admirer of went from being a key part of the establishment of the USSR to being a non entity. I’m not saying I think Bolton has to worry about running into an ice pick in Mexico City at this point but I’m definitely seeing how someone with legitimate in this case right wing street creds gets reduced to “someone who has always been our enemy.” I’ve seen it with the war in Iraq. No one supported the Iraq War more in the media than Fox News. And Trump’s own VP Mike Pence was an unapologetic supporter of it in Congress. But yet the Trump cult wants to act like it was they who were actually anti war all along. And having been in a couple protests, I know that’s bullshit. I’m not saying the Democratic leadership were great leaders in the opposition to it though I will note that Pelosi did rally House Democratic votes against it and got most of the House Dems to vote against the resolution and I will note that even pro war resolution Dems like Biden and Kerry were almost immediately critical of how the Bush administration handled iraq.
That headline is basically a campaign ad for Donald Trump, and it’s false. Hell of a job, New York Times.

Also take a look at these two @nytimes paragraphs.
Republicans have long identified themselves “with economic prosperity,” while Democrats have been “accused of working to keep the poor poor.”
This is jaw-droopingly biased and sleazy. pic.twitter.com/8UNTWyjHb7— Jamison Foser (@jamisonfoser) January 28, 2020

Couldn’t happen to a nicer asshole. I’m sure we all remember how he attacked Rep. Wilson and trashed her because she as a family friend of a KIA soldier was on the line when Trump called the widow and acted unsympathetically. That’s another moment of Trump’s assholishness that totally matches with his response to the soldiers who suffered trauma in the aftermath of the Solemaini attack.
re: #337 Citizen K
Yes, it’s right wing propaganda. They would lose it if the NYT said something like this “Democrats see themselves as champions of modernity and Republicans have been accused of being reactionary dinosaurs.” That’s exactly why I don’t hate why they despise the NYT. The NYT gives them a lot of cover for their shit.

Nicer vocals than getting Trump to sing “Just Somebody that I don’t know”.
HAven’t heard that in years.

Lou Dobbs called him ‘a tool for the Left,’ so there’s that.

Gallagher better hope that those SEALs don’t take it personally. He could wind up in a ditch somewhere, and nobody would know nothin’.

I’m not a fan of that song, but Kimbra is a brilliant artist. I don’t understand why she’s not a superstar.

This fucker should be brought up on charges relating to violations of opsec. He’s putting these teams and team members in danger by releasing information about them and their families.

I also liked the part in the show trials where the public defenders got up to announce that due the heinous nature of the crimes committed, no defense could possibly be offered…

Lowest ranking sumo wrestler in the top division (Maegashira 17, aka the 42nd guy) won the Emperor’s Cup and the Hatsu Basho with a 14-1 record. This is the first time in 20 years a bottom ranked rikishi has prevailed. This guy is 33 and probably pretty close to retirement I would think.
There have been scandals before, so I doubt there were any matches thrown, but….
re: #279 Teukka
I’m just gonna leave this right here, mmmkay?
Well, now that, to use an old fashioned word is probably the single largest bit of blasphemy I’ve seen in a long while. Sorry, I know that word isn’t liked much, yet what other do we have for saying things that go utterly against God in his name?
