And a large portion of Trump’s supporters think AIDS is God’s punishment for Teh Geyh. Why would they care about spending any money at all on HIV/AIDS research (other than to lie about Obama)?

Rick Wiles: God Has Sent the Coronavirus to “Purge a Lot of Sin Off This Planet” (goes to The Friendly Atheist, Hemant Mehta, a religious counterapologist).

Right-wing anti-Semite Rick Wiles, who retains media credentials from the White House, would like you to know that the coronavirus was sent by God to purge the world of sin.

Wiles thinks Jesus confers immunity to disease. As if the virus works by seeking out atheists or lapsed Christians specifically.

Or maybe we shouldn’t be taking medical advice from a man who said the blood of aborted fetuses was in our drinking water.

Or maybe it’s just that Dersh has always been an unprincipled weasel who delights in getting murderers, pedophiles, and rapists acquitted of the felonies they actually committed. It’s all a game to him — he is as dishonest as Trump.

I don’t think this is related to that at all — it’s merely an attempt to destroy the reputation of the person Trump believes would be his most effective opponent. It’s as simple as that. Hillary faced 25 years of unrelenting attacks on her reputation; Trump is trying to accomplish a similar objective in only one year.

That is basically the defense’s “theory of the case,” that Trump was not asking a foreign gov’t to interfere in the 2020 election by spreading dirt about a political opponent, but was instead working to prevent a “corrupt” politician from winning the election. Declaring that what looks like “corrupt intent” on Trump’s part is actually a dedication to going after “corruption” and he just happened to go after one man in one company in a country that is supposed to be rife with corruption.

I genuinely believe it was Trump being Trump, i.e. an impulsive idiot who got conned into doing someone else’s bidding, in this case a Ukrainian oligarch trying to avoid extradition on bribery charges. Rudy’s original job wasn’t even to look into the Bidens, it was to look into Crowdstrike and for “evidence” that Ukraine was responsible for the DNC hack. Firtash and other Ukrainian oligarchs wanted Yovanovich gone because she was getting in the way of business, so they sold Rudy and Trump on the idea that she was disloyal. That was what really set Trump off, the idea that “Obama’s” ambassador was undermining his authority by telling the Ukrainians and others not to bother listening to him because he’d be impeached “soon.” It fed into the general paranoia of Mad King Don that the entire diplomatic corps was set against him and working to destroy him.

Swarms of Flying Homosexual Chemtrail Fire Ants Are Coming For England (Goes to Liberal Darkness)

It’s hard to tell if this blog is a Poe or not. The About page is in Latin.

Since my Latin is about as good as my Sanskrit, I ran it through Google Translate. Reading it in English, I still can’t tell if it’s a Poe.

Nevertheless, the lede.

The World Heath Organization has put England on high alert as swarms of genetically engineered fire ants have been seen swarming the countryside in quick approach to London. The ants have been laced with chemical homosexuality via a modified homosexual chemtrail containing liquid sweat from gay men.

The F1 hybrids from Obama’s Jade Helm homosexual chemtrail fire ants that have been biting Christians in Texas have made their way to England and are swarming from Sheffeld to London, descending on Christian towns and seeking the flesh of straight males. Once bitten, the CDC estimates one’s innate desires of homosexuality will grow to at least secretive or agnostic levels.

These mutated ants are thought to be the first filial (F1 hybrid) generation offspring of the the fire ants Obama deployed in Texas to bite Christians and turn them to homosexuality, a part of the Jade Helm invasion.

The link in the lede goes to The Independent, on an article about a flying ant swarm. The flying ants are common black ants, and such swarms are common.

Well, in states where they have a huge advantage like mine, they make voting easy. (Hence we’re the only red state with 100% mail voting.)

Nevertheless, even here I’m paranoid about things like my voter registration. (I check often. State law requires the county election commissioner to hold your signed registration card as the ultimate proof you are registered to vote. You can check on-line and apply to register there, but the requirement is that signed card.)

Interestingly, when we left Oklahoma and moved here, we tried to end our voter registration in Kay County. The Kay County elections commissioner wrote us back and said that we could not simply call her or even write a letter asking to be removed from the voter rolls under Oklahoma law. What we had to do was get a notarised letter from a government official here. As such, the county prosecutor/village attorney did that for us, and Kay County, Okla. removed us from their rolls.

Since the GOP has been using software to identify people registered in two or more places as “proof of voter impersonation fraud,” that seems to be a wise decision on our part, even though it was a pain in the butt to get Oklahoma to delist us.

We’ll have to see what’s happening.

China seems to be more open about this than they were about SARS. That said, they have an authoritarian government, and those are known for promoting positive information and suppressing negative information.

Regardless of what China is putting out for public consumption, we live in an age where nearly everyone has access to any information at all, anywhere on the planet.

A mysterious disease that has killed a couple hundred people in a country of over a billion people somehow seems scarier than the firearms violence right here at home that kills as many people as the Armed Forces lost in the Vietnam War every single year.

I can’t say I’m surprised by this:

A woman, played by Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow, returns home to Minnesota from a business trip in Hong Kong. Though she exhibits fatigue and cold-like symptoms, she dismisses it as jet lag. Within 24 hours, she’s dead, alongside her young son. Her husband, played by Matt Damon, is somehow immune and survives.

Thus begins Steven Soderberg’s 2011 movie Contagion. Over the next hour and 46 minutes, the movie tracks what happens when a deadly China-born virus goes global and leads to mass chaos as epidemiologists race to find a vaccine.

On Tuesday, the thriller rocketed to No. 10 on the iTunes movie rental chart, where it shares space with such of-the-moment titles as Joker (No. 1), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (No. 3), Parasite (No. 4) and Hustlers (No. 8).

hollywoodreporter.com

Contagion was definitely one of Soderberg’s best films. I saw it years ago when it hit theaters here, and I enjoyed it immensely; well-written, well-acted and had an almost documentary feel to it. I also appreciated how the film touched on tangential issues, such as Jude Law’s conspiracy theorist/snake-oil salesman character, itself a fine performance on his part.

a) We won nothing in the lotto this week, not even a free ticket. It happens.

b) We received a cheque from our credit card company for overpayment by over $2,000. That surprised my wife, so she went back through the cancelled cheques to make sure it wasn’t some sort of error on their part or a fake. She found the payment she made. It turns out that although she wrote “Two Hundred” on the payment line, she added an extra digit “2” in the numerical box ($2200 instead of $200). They also paid a small amount of interest.

It wasn’t exactly free money, but that was nice to get.

I had no idea that India had a Ministry for Alternative Woowoo and Quack Medicine.

As the outbreak of new Coronavirus spreads rapidly, stirring fear and concern, the AYUSH ministry on Wednesday issued a health advisory and recommended that homeopathic and unani medicines could be effective in the prevention of novel coronavirus (nCoV) infections.
The advisory was issued following a meeting on Tuesday of the scientific advisory board of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) under the Ministry of AYUSH to discuss ways and means for prevention of the nCoV infection through homoeopathy, the ministry said in a statement.
It has recommended that homoeopathic medicine Arsenicum album 30 could be taken empty stomach daily for three days as a prophylactic medicine against the infection.

total number of confirmed infection increased to 5,974, with 1,239 in critical condition, 132 dead and 103 recovered.

20% of the patients are critical, that’s diluted by the number of new infections, extrapolate that back to early patients (from 2 days ago number of infected) and it could be way over 50%.

Islamic State’s ‘very own Jabba the Hutt’ captured in Mosul (goes to Stars and Stripes)

This guy provided the religious justification for enslaving women for Islamic State.

Iraqi security forces captured him. He was known as the Mufti of Mosul.

He weighs 254kg / 540 lb / 40 st.

news.com.au

Months after the 2014 attack on the Yazidis, Dabiq, a digital magazine published by ISIS on the dark web, ran an article saying that female members of the Yazidi, an ethnically Kurdish minority, could be enslaved and treated as spoils of war.

“One should remember that enslaving the families of the kuffar — the infidels — and taking their women as concubines is a firmly established aspect of Shariah or Islamic Law,” according to the October 2014 report in the magazine titled The Revival of Slavery Before the Hour or judgment day.

The article continued that “after capture, the Yazidi women and children were then divided according to the Shariah amongst the fighters of the Islamic state … to be divided as spoils of war.”

It also managed to tree a groundhog once while I was visiting. The friend and I wandered over to see what the excitement was. And saw a groundhog on a branch about 8 feet up the tree looking very embarrassed. As the friend had horses, we ended up shooting the groundhog.

As was noted before, the GOP controlled the House and Senate up to 2019. They could have opened investigations if the Bidens were some sort of concern.

Trump could have also asked the Department of Justice to open an investigation.

This only became a problem when Joe Biden started gaining in polling. There was no “there” to investigate legally. That’s why first the pressure on Zelenskyy to appear on CNN and make an announcement (even if there was no investigation afterward), and when he cancelled, the hold up of military aid and outsiders like Giuliani doing it.

They’ve had it for a while now. They also promote Ayurvedic Medicine as official policy.

For coronavirus, they are promoting this homeopathic solution:

In homeopathy, arsenicum album (Arsen. alb.) is a solution prepared by diluting aqueous arsenic trioxide generally until there is little or no arsenic remaining in the solution.

en.wikipedia.org

It is promoted for a range of things, from arsenic poisoning (funny we don’t use it in our public water system), digestive disorders, to liver diseases.

It is considered one of the fifteen “essential” homeopathic remedies. It has been extensively tested. Apparently the only thing it will cure is dehydration (if you drink enough of it).

If/when it starts significantly affecting global supply chains, that’s gonna be a whole different kettle of fish.

Business watchers are noting it is already starting to affect intra-region trade in eastern Asia and Oceania. That’s a significant chunk of the global economy.

Hong Kong banned train travel to and from the mainland. That’s going to bite, on top of the restrictions placed on the capital Beijing.

Considering how many US companies source their parts or products from China, I imagine a trade slowdown is going to bite here pretty soon, unless the disease can be brought under control (which doesn’t seem soon at the moment).

WHO was criticised for being slow about declaring a health emergency after China and other nations provided them with their data. They have now raised the risk to “high.”

WHO Has Admitted an Error in Its Assessment of Wuhan Coronavirus Risk (Science Alert, via AFP):

The World Health Organization, which has sometimes been criticised for its handling of past disease outbreaks, admitted an error on Monday in its risk assessment of China’s deadly virus.

The Geneva-based UN agency said in a situation report late Sunday that the risk was “very high in China, high at the regional level and high at the global level.”

In a footnote, the WHO explained that it had stated “incorrectly” in its previous reports on Thursday, Friday and Saturday that the global risk was “moderate”.

The correction of the global risk assessment does not mean that an international health emergency has been declared.

The WHO on Thursday stopped short of declaring the novel coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern - a rare designation used only for the worst outbreaks that would trigger more concerted global action.

Facebook posts claim that the coronavirus spreading in China was created by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2015, offering a real patent as proof. This is false; the CDC did register a patent, but in an effort to combat a different strain than the one that caused the outbreak that started in the city of Wuhan.

*Originally, blowback was CIA internal coinage denoting the unintended, harmful consequences—to friendly populations and military forces—when a given weapon is used beyond its purpose as intended by the party supplying it. Examples include anti-Western religious figures (e.g. Osama bin Laden) who, in due course, attack foe and sponsor; right-wing counter-revolutionaries who sell drugs to their sponsor’s civil populace (see CIA and Contras cocaine trafficking in the US); and banana republic juntas (see Salvadoran Civil War) who kill American reporters or nuns (e.g. Dorothy Kazel).

Okay, missed a bunch of context: how’d you get to Easter Island? I’m envious, and want to go.

I’ve been traveling a lot since I retired — because I can, and also it’s the overcharged stock market that makes it possible for me, and I don’t expect that to last forever. This time it was a cruise from FL to Santiago with detour to Easter Island (four days to get there, four days back), and also a side trip to.the Galapagos. Home next week.

I searched for anything regarding Wuhan corona virus recovery.
On the one hand, if you have a mild case you might recover in one week. uh huh…suuure. No info on how many cases might be “mild”.

On the other hand, if you get full blown Wuhan corona virus you are looking at weeks of intense medical care and a long recovery.

This case is about an Indian ex-pat in China who teaches at an international school. She was admitted to hospital Jan 11 and the update is Jan 28:

Preeti is currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit at Shekou Hospital in Shenzhen.

suffering from coronavirus Pneumonia, Type 1 respiratory failure, Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) and septic shock.

per doctors, Preeti’s lungs have started showing signs of recovery, though she still continues to be on life support and critical care treatments. However, she is off ECMO machine (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and she is conscious.

The doctors have started wheelchair therapy on Monday for 60 minutes in the morning and evening. Doctors are hopeful that based on the early signs of recovery in the lungs they may be able to remove the ventilator in a week

Wow, IF you do survive, it will be after a long and expensive process. The burden on medical resources is huge. Once the available beds/equipment/doctors are engaged their will be triage and an increased % of fatalities.

Huge ship (passengers plus crew equals about 3400). Trash in the ocean ends up concentrated in particular areas — none seen on this trip. Rough seas for a couple of days in the Caribbean, but not since (mostly sunny or cloudy weather, a bit of rain). We’ve spent most of our time in the tropics or subtropics, so that’s not a surprise.

Looking at the Wuhan corona virus data (Mapping the Wuhan Coronavirus (2019-nCoV))from Hubei more closely:
As of Jan 22 there were 444 confirmed cases reported. (earliest data)
As of Jan 28 there were 125 dead and 80 recovered.

Assuming it takes some time to succumb, most deaths would have come from the 444 confirmed cases as of Jan 22.

Trump hires all the best people, right until they’re disposed of because they failed the personal loyalty test. The moment anyone does something he doesn’t like, he’s done with them. He throws them under the bus.

What’s hilarious is how Fox turned on the Trump dime - from big Bolton supporters to questioning everything Bolton did and that he’s a deep state plant or more.

Heck, I’ve got people getting up in my twitter feed saying he’s bought and paid by Ukrainian oligarchs who funded the Clinton Foundation (because of course they are).

W-9s are for income id usually, to get the SSN
It’s got nothing to do with vetting a recipient as a legit charitable cause

Asked about the legality of the giveaways in a brief phone interview, the Urban Revitalization Coalition’s CEO, Darrell Scott, said that most gifts were between $300 and $500, and that the group mandates that anyone who receives over $600 fills out a W-9 form in order to ensure compliance with tax law. He did not respond to follow-up questions about how the giveaways were structured and whether they met the legal standard for a charitable act

Because they aren’t necessary in the articles of impeachment.

But we can point to them. We can show ‘em that the literal words of the articles of impeachment identify criminal acts and misconduct.

What is a bit curious about this (on second thought, maybe not) is given that how the Trumps appear to be heavily in the pockets of the Saudi Arabians why they are unilaterally tossing out a “take it or leave it” deal that runs entirely in Israel’s favor and not taking Palestinian concerns into account or even consulting them.

My second thoughts is that this is another iteration of the Arab world throwing the Palestinians under the bus as a convenient victim in pursuit of their own anti-Israel policies. Saudi Arabia is not hurt much, if at all, by Israel doing things here. But this will keep the Palestinian Authority riled up, possibly rile up Jordan enough to mess up their truce/peace with Israel, and be steps towards ratcheting up the tensions in the Middle East.

Reading a few books doesn’t qualify you as an expert on ME politics. Putting together a map doesn’t qualify you either. Maps are the easiest thing to do - there are 100s of potential variations on how a 2-state solution could be drawn.

The problem is everything else - the political will to accept a 2-state solution, addressing right of return, status of Jerusalem, and all the other sticky bits that Trump couldn’t give a shit about.

Got another vet bill/pet issues anecdote for the pile.

Chat Noir was acting “cat sick” just over a week ago. Sour breath smell, losing weight, and just not being himself. So I took him in to the vet.

The sour breath smell is apparently an indication of kidney issues. He was somewhat dehydrated, some blood in the urine sample, but otherwise vital organs appeared to be working. He got some subcutaneous fluids there in the office, an antibiotic shot, and I was sent home with an appetite stimulant for him, an IV saline bag and needles to do daily subcutaneous fluids on him (100-150ml). The next day the blood work came back and I went and picked up a phosphate-fixing powder to give him twice a day mixed into wet food. All together about $400 for lab work, etc.

He responded pretty well to things. Was heartily eating within a day and was acting much more like himself. Doesn’t like getting fluids, but puts up with it. And he had a vet visit yesterday as a followup. Weight is up a pound, sour breath smell almost gone, and everything else is going pretty well. Keeping him on fluids and the powder for another two weeks and then he will go in for blood work again to see what his kidney numbers have stabilized at. (Hopefully back close to where they were before, he has above normal numbers, but not anything really hazardous.)

Warren was on NPR this morning and was repeatedly asked about Hunter testifying as an exchange. She made is clear that it would be nothing but theater and distraction and provide nothing towards the actual trial.

It would be like Jody foster testifying at mark David Chapman’s trial

this is what ive been asking for days
what happened in those 55 days with respect to the bidens that changed the president’s mind to release the aid?

they didnt ‘investigate’ in those 55 days and ‘clear’ the bidens or any concerns, making the release ok. proof - they still say he’s corrupt and want him to testify

the answer is: nothing. nothing changed.

they released the money anyway.

if they believed biden was somehow in fact corrupt and so the money needed to be withheld in the first place, they still released the money. why? i mean aside from they got caught.

Is inherited money a damper on intelligence?

There’s some actual evidence that it is. Generational decay is one of the big, though seldom mentioned, concerns of the REAL Republican Base, the privileged but perpetually threatened hinterland gentry. Everyone knows the local fatcat whose children couldn’t find their asses with both hands, who would squander their inheritance on drugs or stupid investments if they had the chance. This is the result of bad reproductive choices in a notably patriarchal demographic (“marrying for tits”) and worse child-rearing practices, both of which are deeply embedded in the culture. Combined with general social progress, this reduces the long-time heart of the Republican Party to abject desperation. Trump and his regime of lies and grift are the result. No matter how awful he is, they hope, or believe, or desperately assume that he can save them from the doom they really see as all but inevitable. It’s all they have and they are betting the ranch on it, literally so in the case of some of my neighbors.

total number of confirmed infection increased to 5,974, with 1,239 in critical condition, 132 dead and 103 recovered.

20% of the patients are critical, that’s diluted by the number of new infections, extrapolate that back to early patients (from 2 days ago number of infected) and it could be way over 50%.

Those figures suggest a much more dire threat than the reports elsewhere that did not provide that level of detail. Of course, everything depends on the actual number of people originally infected — and as yet there is no way to gauge that number. People with mild symptoms would not be heading to the doctor. Certainly possible that under 1918 medical technology, this would prove as deadly as the 1918 pandemic but with modern technology, the fatalities will be far lower. Or this will turn out not to be as dangerous as initially thought. The official Chinese reaction suggests that they are very concerned and that should be enough to make us all concerned.

I read far more than 25 books to get my master’s degree in political science specializing on the Arab-Israeli peace process. My thesis cited everyone from Kenneth Waltz and Kissinger to Schlessinger and interviews with Shimon Peres.

Kushner is a babe in the woods and when Kushner speaks, you can see MBS’ hand moving.

As a reminder, MBS and the Arabs of other nations (except, perhaps, for Jordan) don’t care about the Palestinians. They are considered a nuisance. Trump certainly doesn’t care about them — but then he doesn’t care about anyone other than himself. Unfortunately, the Palestinians have also lacked the leadership that would get them a state. At Camp David in 2000, Arafat had a chance to bring a real peace settlement to his people but he was too afraid that the same fate would befall him as Rabin and Sadat and others, and so the process failed.

Maybe, if Democrats win the WH in 2020, there will be a new opportunity to address this conflict. If the GOP wins, we will face a 1000 years of darkness.

Hecuba's daughter  Jan 29, 2020 • 8:56:05am

Like most of you, I have received many calls (even this morning!) on how my extended car warranty is expiring or how my credit card can be exchanged for one with lower interest rates etc. But yesterday, it was a first!! “Call me Raj” actually called me!! A personal call and I don’t even live in his district! When I questioned why he needed funds for the primary, he explained that there were several candidates attacking him from the left. Maybe Joe Crowley’s fate has scared others.

Republican policy really is just a bunch of sugar highs. Watch if a Democrat wins the Presidency, they suddenly become concerned about the debt again even though the Trump Administration has flat out said they don’t care about debts. And Trump isn’t the first high profile Republican in the exec branch to say this. Cheney did. I don’t know how important the debt really is but I do know this, Republicans are always selectively outraged about it. It’s a time honored scam.

Unforunately a lot of us fall for fake stuff too or repost stuff that happened a year ago. I’ve had to tell people and stress to them that I agree with what they’re saying that they’re posting something from two or even three years ago. Trump’s quote about how Article ! lets hi mdo whatever he wants is bad enough.

no matter how the impeachment in general, and the events of this week unfold, bolton and the publisher planned for this from the start

if trump doesnt find out till publication - ie even if the book hadnt leaked, those doing the vetting totally kept it from reaching the prez at all.

not likely, cause they’d be hung after it went public.

So, got done watching the first episode of Star Trek: Picard and I gotta say, it’s a strong start to the series. I hope they can maintain that throughout the series run. Nice to see Patrick Stewart back as Jean-Luc and it’s different than your typical Star Trek series, which is appreciated, at least by me.

Impeachment: Jay Sekulow bumbles the John Bolton witness question

Following Sekulow’s logic, unless the defense produces its own evidence, the Senate is duty-bound to find all the charges against Trump to be true because there is no admissible evidence to rebut them.

(it doesnt matter of course because the vote to not convict wont be based on the record that was produced.)

In an effort to put out this growing firestorm, Sekulow, the last speaker making President Trump’s opening statement in the Senate trial, argued that the Senate should ignore Bolton’s allegations, “I don’t know what you call that. I call it inadmissible but that’s what it is.”

In just two ad libbed sentences, Jay Sekulow managed to blow up the very basis of President Trump’s no-witness strategy, that senators have heard enough and that no further evidence is necessary. Worse, he made the case that Trump himself has to be brought in as a witness because none of the various statements he has made to the press or on Twitter are admissible either. (By contrast, all the testimony taken under oath by the House is.)
