Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle must recognize the challenge climate change presents and support legislation that addresses both mitigation and resiliency.
Along with a group of bipartisan Senators, I’ve repeatedly called on the Trump Administration to move forward to fund and complete the Great Lakes Coastal Resiliency Study. This study would identify areas in the Great Lakes that are vulnerable to climate change and recommend measures and infrastructure to increase resilience.
I’ve also called on the Army Corps of Engineers to help expand the shoreline project to additional sections of the lakeshore and protect against rising lake levels. I recently spoke to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (ASA) for Civil Works, R.D. James, who oversees the Army Corps, and urged him to make these projects a top priority in this year’s budget.
The bottom line is this: we need to wake up and work together to strengthen our shorelines by letting science, not politics, guide our actions. Lake Michigan has been great to us, and it’s about time we return the favor.

When I fractured my neck mountain biking, the orderly wheeling me back and forth to cat scan and mri etc was telling about the number of DOA and DSAA* from extremely minor bike accidents - like falling over while stationary - where there was no helmet being worn. My helmet had a deep pointy dent in the forehead area. I don’t want to speculate what that whatever-it-was would have done to me sans helmet. (My sunglasses appear to have saved an eye, as well.)

Republicans won one of twelve contests in New Jersey in 2018. So, in a sense, they’ve nowhere to go but up. But their only loss within 2% was the third district; a district that went for Trump 51-45 in 2018. So, there’s potential for them to pick up a seat, or maybe two, but with Trump on the top of the ticket, I’d have to think those chances aren’t particularly good for them.

You know one thing I never thought about but there were actually places where HRC did better than Obama. I think I saw someone post somewhere in an attempt to debunk the economic anxiety nonsense that the former Obama places that Trump won were places that saw increases in Hispanics. MEanwhile Clinton actually and I think Belafon can vouch for me made some gains in the Texas metro areas and also Arizona. I had friends in high school who loved The Doors. Although I like a few of their songs better now than I did while they were working, I never got the attraction.
Densmore was an okay drummer, but I could not stand to listen to Robby Krieger’s guitar work and thought Manzarek had a few riffs he played over and over and over.
I always imagined that had Morrisson lived, he would have ended up as the hippie version of Elvis, overweight and proclaiming himself the Lizard King at some casino in Vegas. Maybe shooting a TV here and there.

There’d be a lot! I’d actually put some of the shows we did with Al Jarreau in there. We had some pretty freaking magical nights, especially when Steve Gadd was playing drums.
I just saw Peter Gabriel once, but that was definitely one of the best ever. And I’ll always remember a Joni Mitchell concert from back in the day, because I was totally crushing on her and her voice was just incredible.
There was one Todd Rundgren concert too, right at the beginning of a tour so his voice was in perfect condition and he absolutely nailed a whole bunch of his songs. Blew me away. Watch out when he gets to the end of a tour though; I don’t think he ever learned how to sing properly without blowing out his voice.

A close friend of mine was Joni Mitchell’s lighting guy for a tour or two, we ended up doing a lot of lighting control systems when he left touring. Said she was a great singer and great person and he reminisced about her shows frequently.
Best shows I remember: Stevie Ray Vaughn about 3 months before he died, with Jeff Back and Terry Bozzio opening. That was a show.
Most shocking: went to go see Red Hot Chili Peppers and saw Primus and Limbomaniacs with no idea of who they were or their sound. My metal days were over that night. A few months later, went to see Primus again, saw some weird band called Faith No More.

One of his under-appreciated achievements as mayor is making every single inch of waterfront, in all five boroughs, public parks. The lawns, the boardwalks and the bike paths are 12-18” higher than their previous sea-level elevation; with absorptive plants and good drainage to quickly alleviate any storm-driven (or rising sea level) flooding. He definitely positioned the city to be more climate-change-resiliant than it would have been.
Some of the developers of riverfront projects wanted private parks and beaches, he’s possibly the only potential mayor who had the ability to withstand their lobbying and refuse. He also insisted on set-back zoning that kept them from putting buildings too close to the water.
ohohoh… also, raised property taxes enough that the abatements for greening up every building made environmental upgrades financially necessary. Double-paned windows, low-flow toilets and showers, gray water recycling, co-generation incinerators that hook to steam and electric, solar panels on the roof; my building’s utility usage has gone down 40% in the last 20 years, and our trash pickup that used to go to landfills is down by 60%.
ETA: this is for a building constructed in 1967.

I also caught the Replacements at a gig where they couldn’t finish a song and played things like the Double Mint jingle (Bob in a dress). I was so disappointed. A couple of years before a friend called and asked if I wanted to check out The Kinks as tickets were available at the door and it was super cheap. So we caught John Cougar and the Zone warming up—they were amazing—and then The Kinks on the Celluloid Heroes tour. I wasn’t a huge fan, but it may be the best show I’ve ever seen.

One of my older brothers gave me a book of Morrison stuff - can’t remember if it was lyrics or poetry or both. He made some comment about Morrison being a poet and I did a very good job of not saying any of the things I was thinking.
Faux “deep” blecch. Good way, though, to quickly identify people who really really ought to spend some time reading actual poetry. (Or listening to songs by actually great songwriters.)

Although I am not Charles, I have a few standout shows. REM at UMass, Reckoning tour I think. Not a huge room, and at the end, Stipe sang Moon River accapella with two green spotlights behind him, the he cast a big silhouette on the green-lit walls. I thought his rendition was beautiful. (The rest of the show was awesome, too.)
I thought X as “special secret guests” at a RHCP show at the (sadly gone) Music Machine on Pico were very exciting (even though it was Gilky and not Billy Zoom.)
Sonic Youth and fIREHOSE at Amherst College was great (extra bonus, I got to sit and chat with Henry Rollins for a bit between bands.)

Yes. It is beautiful outside as well as inside. I was at the Juanita A Kidd Stout Center of Criminal Justice instead of City Hall. For a modern building it is okay and has clean bathrooms. For lunch I went to Reading Terminal and got a bagel from Metropolitan Bakery and some almonds from Iovine Brothers. And of course the City of Philadelphia gave me $9 for the day.

I’ve been to a couple concerts where loud substituted for good. And it wasn’t good.
Guns and Roses on their tour with Faith No More and Metallica comes to mind. They had the sound turned way up, but Axel was late to the show, and it delayed Metallica closing.
My Live Band Highlight was The Who in spring of 1983 (post-Keith Moon)
But they did all my favorite songs, including some obscure ones, like “Tattoo”, “Boris the Spider” and “The Naked Eye”.
And for what it’s worth, I got to see Lynrd Skynrd while they were still all alive and intact (at a big outdoor festival near Chicago in 1976 along with Yes, Peter Frampton and Gary Wright.)

Saw Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes last year at the Greek and that might be my favorite show I’ve attended. There’s just something about that band and their fans that make it magical.
I’ve been to probably 5 or 6 Jimmy Buffett concerts and those are always a good time; though those have probably transitioned to “event” status more than anything.
Metallica probably 20 years ago was pretty damn amazing at the LA Coliseum.
But I really enjoy smaller venue shows now. Saw Valley Queen at a small place in Long Beach before they were Valley Queen. Natalie Carol is amazing.

My Live Band Highlight was The Who in spring of 1983 (post-Keith Moon)
But they did all my favorite songs, including some obscure ones, like “Tattoo”, “Boris the Spider” and “The Naked Eye”.
And for what it’s worth, I got to see Lynrd Skynrd while they were still all alive and intact (at a big outdoor festival near Chicago in 1976 along with Yes, Peter Frampton and Gary Wright.)
Saw The Who duo in May. I went partly since there was a good chance this may be their final tour and I’d never seen them live.
I was really worried about Daltrey’s voice, based mostly their horrendous Super Bowl show from a few years back.
I could not have been more wrong. Goddamn, he was amazing. Really glad I went.

Saw them a few years back and they were good. They had Joan Jett as their opening act and she was surprisingly good. There were a few points where Daltry or Jett had pitch issues and some of their songs were a few beats slower than when they were in their prime, but they did strong sets.

If I’m being honest, the best concert I’ve ever seen would be Postmodern Jukebox. Just such an exciting and riveting time.
Also, weirdly enough, Huey Lewis and the News, back when I worked at Popular Creek outdoor amphitheater. Now, I don’t like Huey Lewis at all- but man were they tight. It was just damned impressive. Plus, they gave a free mini-concert for the staff before the gate opened. (A surprising number of acts got really testy about staff watching sound checks.)

So, among those bands/acts you have seen, who would you consider to be the best concert you’ve attended (including those you’ve played in)?
I’ve been to a bunch of shows, and I know the ones that stand out - Pink Floyd during Division Bell, Woodstock 94 (NIN being the standout act; CSN was good, but Melissa Etheridge also stood out as did Peter Gabriel and RHCP).
I attended a few Jefferson Starship shows that were decent, but the one show I’ll never forget was when Jefferson Airplane had their reunion tour - had 3rd row seats at DTE Energy Theater at the side of the stage where Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady did a Hot Tuna set, and Grace Slick through out little stuffed pandas (one of which I caught.)
Also Neil Diamond and Billy Joel were good shows - last concert I was at was with Big Head Todd and the Monsters and George Thorogood.
I also did classical concerts, both Mahler Symphony no 3 - one with Gunter Herbig and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at a revamped Orchestra Hall (My friend who went with me snarked after the concert that CD’s suck) and later on that decade with Christoph Esenbach with the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia (where planes from O’Hare would seriously harsh my mellow during the performance….)

when elvis costello and the attractions first came to the US, they toured upstate new york and played..movie theaters. opening act was the Rubinoos.

I also saw them at Shea—for that one, my mother (who glommed onto my Beatle frenzy) took the train into the city (we lived on Long Island at the time) and stood in line for tickets. She didn’t tell anyone until the day of the concert and then said, “Don’t you wish you were going tonight?” Of course, the answer was yes, and then she whipped out 6 tickets.
