Got CL’d on last thread.

re: #619 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)

Looked like he got on a MAGA bus. But joking aside, Trump bragging about his victory last night in Iowa is Peak Trump.

It’s just like his bragging about his approval among REPUBLICANS.

It’s just like saying: “Hey, most Nazis really love Hitler!” or being impressed at how many Packers fans are in the stands at Lambeau for a game.

It really quite honestly one of the most pathetic things I’ve seen from a politician. Like yeah dude we get it, you’re overwhelmingly popular in your own party. It’s not shocking but the 9-5 President just has to be the world’s biggest Twitter troll.

Republican Senators including Lamar Alexander, Lisa Murkowski and Marco Rubio spent the weekend offering lame justifications for their vote against calling witnesses in the Trump impeachment trial.

If we allowed witnesses, then there would be witnesses.

And then when we get those accurate results, maybe it’s time for Iowa to have a real primary election instead of this ridiculous caucus stuff.

The problem is, that Iowa won’t pay for a primary.
Another option is for the DNC to refuse to let Iowa go first in the primary season

They can’t do that either. They could refuse to accept the ballots. I wonder if that would hurt Democrats chances in the state, though.

From my good senator (both of mine are good):

Like most Illinoisans, there is a special place in my heart for Lake Michigan.

But more recently, extreme weather & flooding in Illinois has had a major impact on the environment, infrastructure, and economy of the Lake Michigan shoreline. If this weather continues, it will do untold damage to the future of our beloved Great Lake. Link: chicagotribune.com

Climate change threatens so much of what Lake Michigan provides to our state: recreation and relaxation by the shore, clean drinking water, and natural beauty. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle must recognize the challenge climate change presents and support legislation that addresses both mitigation and resiliency.

Along with a group of bipartisan Senators, I’ve repeatedly called on the Trump Administration to move forward to fund and complete the Great Lakes Coastal Resiliency Study. This study would identify areas in the Great Lakes that are vulnerable to climate change and recommend measures and infrastructure to increase resilience.

I’ve also called on the Army Corps of Engineers to help expand the shoreline project to additional sections of the lakeshore and protect against rising lake levels. I recently spoke to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (ASA) for Civil Works, R.D. James, who oversees the Army Corps, and urged him to make these projects a top priority in this year’s budget.

The bottom line is this: we need to wake up and work together to strengthen our shorelines by letting science, not politics, guide our actions. Lake Michigan has been great to us, and it’s about time we return the favor.
Sincerely,
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)

44
PrairieQueen  Feb 4, 2020 • 11:04:29am

Per Wiki:

The Iowa caucuses are noteworthy as the first major contest of the United States presidential primary season. Although caucus-goers have been unrepresentative of the nation’s overall ethnic demographic, caucuses are still seen by some as a strong indicator of how a presidential candidate will do in later contests.

With all the other shit we’re swimming in at the moment, this is barely the first leg of a marathon.

Combine it with 虫 and you get “mushiba,” which means dental cavity or bad tooth

When I fractured my neck mountain biking, the orderly wheeling me back and forth to cat scan and mri etc was telling about the number of DOA and DSAA* from extremely minor bike accidents - like falling over while stationary - where there was no helmet being worn. My helmet had a deep pointy dent in the forehead area. I don’t want to speculate what that whatever-it-was would have done to me sans helmet. (My sunglasses appear to have saved an eye, as well.)
Somewhere there is a picture of me, bandaged, bloody, and doped to the gills, pitching my wife on the idea that if I had a full-suspension bike, the accident would not have happened. Apparently I had a hard time getting through the pitch without laughing.

Michael Bloomberg campaigns against voter suppression at voters rights summit in Georgia
The private event was organized by Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight 2020 Initiative and held in the city of Atlanta
thegrio.com

For the first time since announcing his 2020 presidential run in late November, Michael Bloomberg visited Atlanta, GA. On Friday, the Presidential nominee hopeful kicked off his schedule with an early morning stop at an invite-only voting rights summit organized by Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight 2020 Initiative. While there, Bloomberg shared detailed thoughts on voting and voter suppression with the handful of media outlets in the room.

Those unaware of the history between Bloomberg and Abrams might raise an eyebrow at their alliance. Bloomberg, however, has been a long time and an early financial supporter of Abrams. She shared that history as she introduced him to the attendees. According to Abrams, when she launched the New Georgia Project in 2014 intending to register 800,000 unregistered voters in the state by 2024, Bloomberg was a generous donor. Then in 2018, when Abrams dared to run for governor of Georgia, a feat that would have made her the first Black woman to hold that position in this country, Bloomberg donated significantly to her campaign.

Republicans won one of twelve contests in New Jersey in 2018. So, in a sense, they’ve nowhere to go but up. But their only loss within 2% was the third district; a district that went for Trump 51-45 in 2018. So, there’s potential for them to pick up a seat, or maybe two, but with Trump on the top of the ticket, I’d have to think those chances aren’t particularly good for them.

I was going to post the same thing. Also, that annoying thing where DJs back in the day felt compelled to play “Riders on the Storm” on every rainy day. “Like a dog without a bone.”

And it could have been worse - just as John McCain’s father was an admiral so was Jim Morrison’s. He could have gone to Annapolis, become a meh officer and then a Republican politician from some southern state O_o

I’d say the world was better off that he went with being a hack musician beloved of teen aged boys instead.

So, among those bands/acts you have seen, who would you consider to be the best concert you’ve attended (including those you’ve played in)?

I’ve been to a bunch of shows, and I know the ones that stand out - Pink Floyd during Division Bell, Woodstock 94 (NIN being the standout act; CSN was good, but Melissa Etheridge also stood out as did Peter Gabriel and RHCP).

Some lesser shows that I thought needed something more: 2cellos and Of Monsters and Men - both could have been longer but I think that’s more of an issue over catalog length than their skills.

There’d be a lot! I’d actually put some of the shows we did with Al Jarreau in there. We had some pretty freaking magical nights, especially when Steve Gadd was playing drums.

I just saw Peter Gabriel once, but that was definitely one of the best ever. And I’ll always remember a Joni Mitchell concert from back in the day, because I was totally crushing on her and her voice was just incredible.

There was one Todd Rundgren concert too, right at the beginning of a tour so his voice was in perfect condition and he absolutely nailed a whole bunch of his songs. Blew me away. Watch out when he gets to the end of a tour though; I don’t think he ever learned how to sing properly without blowing out his voice.

Maybe because, try to bear with me here, the conspiracy theories are taking valuable attention away from meaningfully addressing the massive institutional failure

And far too often, these kind of conspiracy theories are excuses to blame shift toward folks actually trying to address these institutional failures and away from those actually responsible for the failures. And usually by those holding grievances and grudges from unrelated things.

A close friend of mine was Joni Mitchell’s lighting guy for a tour or two, we ended up doing a lot of lighting control systems when he left touring. Said she was a great singer and great person and he reminisced about her shows frequently.

Best shows I remember: Stevie Ray Vaughn about 3 months before he died, with Jeff Back and Terry Bozzio opening. That was a show.

Most shocking: went to go see Red Hot Chili Peppers and saw Primus and Limbomaniacs with no idea of who they were or their sound. My metal days were over that night. A few months later, went to see Primus again, saw some weird band called Faith No More.

The closest I can think of (outside of drunken Replacements trying to be a bad cover band) was a fill in opening act but I was going to be disappointed no matter what - it was supposed to be The Boomtown Rats opening for Gary Neuman but the Rats had to cancel due to an injury and I had only come for them.

One of his under-appreciated achievements as mayor is making every single inch of waterfront, in all five boroughs, public parks. The lawns, the boardwalks and the bike paths are 12-18” higher than their previous sea-level elevation; with absorptive plants and good drainage to quickly alleviate any storm-driven (or rising sea level) flooding. He definitely positioned the city to be more climate-change-resiliant than it would have been.

Some of the developers of riverfront projects wanted private parks and beaches, he’s possibly the only potential mayor who had the ability to withstand their lobbying and refuse. He also insisted on set-back zoning that kept them from putting buildings too close to the water.

ohohoh… also, raised property taxes enough that the abatements for greening up every building made environmental upgrades financially necessary. Double-paned windows, low-flow toilets and showers, gray water recycling, co-generation incinerators that hook to steam and electric, solar panels on the roof; my building’s utility usage has gone down 40% in the last 20 years, and our trash pickup that used to go to landfills is down by 60%.

ETA: this is for a building constructed in 1967.

I also caught the Replacements at a gig where they couldn’t finish a song and played things like the Double Mint jingle (Bob in a dress). I was so disappointed. A couple of years before a friend called and asked if I wanted to check out The Kinks as tickets were available at the door and it was super cheap. So we caught John Cougar and the Zone warming up—they were amazing—and then The Kinks on the Celluloid Heroes tour. I wasn’t a huge fan, but it may be the best show I’ve ever seen.

Not a huge room, and at the end, Stipe sang Moon River accapella with two green spotlights behind him, the he cast a big silhouette on the green-lit walls. I thought his rendition was beautiful. (The rest of the show was awesome, too.)
I thought X as “special secret guests” at a RHCP show at the (sadly gone) Music Machine on Pico were very exciting (even though it was Gilky and not Billy Zoom.)
Sonic Youth and fIREHOSE at Amherst College was great (extra bonus, I got to sit and chat with Henry Rollins for a bit between bands.)

While mentioning that Trump has never gotten to 50% approval in any reputable poll, let alone Gallup, he’s at 49% and Cilizza thinks that this is huge accomplishment.

The sole reason for this polling is that the GOP is almost entirely behind Trump. They are a goddamned cult, and Cilizza thinks that this is good. Never mind the actual facts of impeachment, the nonstop lies by Trumpworld, the nonstop hose of conspiracy theories from right wingers, and the agitprop from Faux. He thinks that this is all helping Trump to better polling than Obama at the same point in their first term.

re: #144 Barefoot Grin

I’ve been to a couple concerts where loud substituted for good. And it wasn’t good.

Guns and Roses on their tour with Faith No More and Metallica comes to mind. They had the sound turned way up, but Axel was late to the show, and it delayed Metallica closing.

My Live Band Highlight was The Who in spring of 1983 (post-Keith Moon)

But they did all my favorite songs, including some obscure ones, like “Tattoo”, “Boris the Spider” and “The Naked Eye”.

And for what it’s worth, I got to see Lynrd Skynrd while they were still all alive and intact (at a big outdoor festival near Chicago in 1976 along with Yes, Peter Frampton and Gary Wright.)

Jumping in to play the concert game…

Saw Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes last year at the Greek and that might be my favorite show I’ve attended. There’s just something about that band and their fans that make it magical.

I’ve been to probably 5 or 6 Jimmy Buffett concerts and those are always a good time; though those have probably transitioned to “event” status more than anything.

Metallica probably 20 years ago was pretty damn amazing at the LA Coliseum.

But I really enjoy smaller venue shows now. Saw Valley Queen at a small place in Long Beach before they were Valley Queen. Natalie Carol is amazing.

re: #144 Barefoot Grin

I saw REM in a little club in Atlanta in 1983 and they were great. It was a benefit, though, and so they played a lot of covers. I saw them a couple of years later in the Fox Theater and they just couldn’t get their sound right. It was a shame.

The worst show was when they were touring for Green in ‘88. By Stipe’s own admission, he was in the middle of a nervous breakdown.

At one point he started haranguing the audience for drinking Coors out of styrofoam coolers.

153
LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)  Feb 4, 2020 • 1:05:23pm

Worst show for me was Bob Dylan. I love Bob but man that was disappointing. It was at GMU’s Patriot Center.

Best, probably this summer. Dawes. I knew Taylor Goldsmith could sing and has some great songs but man he can perform too!

He can be forgiven for that:

Worst band I ever saw was one of the openers for a concert I went to on January 1, 2000.

They were a punk rock band. I don’t remember their name but I do remember the hideous gold suits they all wore on stage. What they played was less music and just repetitive, aggravating noise. Every song sounded almost just like the last one.

Saw The Who duo in May. I went partly since there was a good chance this may be their final tour and I’d never seen them live.

I was really worried about Daltrey’s voice, based mostly their horrendous Super Bowl show from a few years back.

I could not have been more wrong. Goddamn, he was amazing. Really glad I went.

Saw them a few years back and they were good. They had Joan Jett as their opening act and she was surprisingly good. There were a few points where Daltry or Jett had pitch issues and some of their songs were a few beats slower than when they were in their prime, but they did strong sets.

If I’m being honest, the best concert I’ve ever seen would be Postmodern Jukebox. Just such an exciting and riveting time.

Also, weirdly enough, Huey Lewis and the News, back when I worked at Popular Creek outdoor amphitheater. Now, I don’t like Huey Lewis at all- but man were they tight. It was just damned impressive. Plus, they gave a free mini-concert for the staff before the gate opened. (A surprising number of acts got really testy about staff watching sound checks.)

I attended a few Jefferson Starship shows that were decent, but the one show I’ll never forget was when Jefferson Airplane had their reunion tour - had 3rd row seats at DTE Energy Theater at the side of the stage where Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady did a Hot Tuna set, and Grace Slick through out little stuffed pandas (one of which I caught.)

Also Neil Diamond and Billy Joel were good shows - last concert I was at was with Big Head Todd and the Monsters and George Thorogood.

I also did classical concerts, both Mahler Symphony no 3 - one with Gunter Herbig and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at a revamped Orchestra Hall (My friend who went with me snarked after the concert that CD’s suck) and later on that decade with Christoph Esenbach with the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia (where planes from O’Hare would seriously harsh my mellow during the performance….)

Well, as one of the screaming girls (along with my mother—sigh), I have to say it was weird—like the screams were on one decibel level but you could actually hear the music on another (if that makes any sense.)

I also saw them at Shea—for that one, my mother (who glommed onto my Beatle frenzy) took the train into the city (we lived on Long Island at the time) and stood in line for tickets. She didn’t tell anyone until the day of the concert and then said, “Don’t you wish you were going tonight?” Of course, the answer was yes, and then she whipped out 6 tickets.

I know I’ve seen more than are on my list, but it’s hard to remember (I iz old).

susan collins will vote to acquit - quelle surprise:

Susan Collins is an idiot.

susan collins thinks this guy learned something:

Vanity Fair excerpts Sinking in the Swamp by Lachlan Markay and Asawin Suebsaeng: “The 2016 campaign wanted Trump to release an official written statement renouncing birther conspiracy theories and declaring once and for all that baby Barack was born in the United States. His aides asked him for a short and sweet statement…”

“This kicked off what two people on the call independently described as a seven‐minute, meandering spat of word vomit during which Trump kept finding new ways to say that his birther crusade was, in fact, necessary, good, and proper. He repeatedly echoed his past comments on the matter… Really, Trump reasoned, what he did was a smashing success that warranted no apology, and he was happy he helped settle one of the great questions of our time.”

“Had this soliloquy been made public, it would have spanned two pages, single spaced.”

Greenwald being upset about Sanders underperformance in Iowa is not a GREAT payoff for the clusterfuck we have been enduring…but it is way better than nothing.

Also: if your big argument against Mayor Pete is that he’s a white male, you are not really any better than the person against him because he’s gay.

I am not a big fan, I feel like there are plenty of problems with the guy that can be pointed out without resorting to the arguments above.

Well, I worried that any one party that was so secure in its control, would inevitably lead to crazy legislation and out-of-control spending.

Instead, under Jerry Brown, the California gov’t methodically tried to improve the lives of its residents, socked away billions in a rainy-day fund, and generally tried to govern responsibly.

Beats the living fuck out of the hellscape imposed on poor Kansas when the GOP got into unitary power.

What turns the irony up to 11 here is that Rush specifically claimed that secondhand smoke was harmless. As I understand it, cigar smokers usually don’t directly inhale the smoke from their cigars. If that was Rush’s pattern, then secondhand smoke is almost certainly what led to his cancer.

A woman can’t win. I wish it wasn’t so but I believe with every ounce of my being that it’s true.

I’ve told you. I respectfully disagree.

It can not be understated the amount of destruction that Rush Limbaugh did to the political discourse in this country.

He had lots of help. The sheer industrial scale of the right wing noise machine is too often ignored.

I really do not want to hear “But you have to give him credit.” This is a man who relished in pushing racism and bigotry for cheap laughs.

Rush getting cancer don’t make him either better or worse as a person — he remains the same piece of shit he has been in his entire career. I.e., a latter-day version of Father Coughlin.

Well now I want to play.
Best 4:
Beatles—Forest Hills
Harry Chapin—one of many, but one night at Blossom, he played for about 4 hours—as long as anyone stayed to listen
BB King, Little Feat, Dr. John
Billy Joel/Elton John

All the live shows I can remember (some multiple times)—long list, so hidden to protect many from boredom

Dan Fogelberg was a good concert. Saw him in Jackson MS around ‘76-‘77. Was a real nice show.

So today’s words about the caucuses are EPIC, DISASTER, CHAOS, DEBACLE, DEMS IN DISARRAY, HORRORS!!

Let’s hop into the time machine and check some of the reporting on the 2012 Republican caucus situation:

HuffPo—calm and considered:
A final count of votes from the 2012 Iowa Caucus may show that Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum actually won over rival Mitt Romney.

Doubts about Romney’s win surfaced quickly after the caucus, with one vote-counter from Appanoose County coming out less than 48 hours after the caucuses and claiming a mistake gave the former Massachusetts governor 20 extra votes.

Matt Strawn, chairman of the Iowa GOP, responded to the claim with a statement assuring that the final Iowa Caucus results would come after a “two-week certification process for each of the 1,774 precincts.” He also said the Iowa Republican party did “not have any reason to believe the final, certified results of Appanoose County will change the outcome of Tuesday’s vote.”

Politico—ho hum:
Strawn’s Thursday announcement, which placed Santorum ahead but didn’t definitively declare him a winner because eight precincts had yet to report their results, had left enough uncertainty for Romney’s campaign to suggest that the state was a draw.

ABC—
At first
:
DES MOINES, Iowa Jan. 4, 2012— — Mitt Romney won the first presidential preference contest of 2012 by a mere eight votes Tuesday, narrowly edging out a surging Rick Santorum in the Iowa Caucuses.

Then, calm as a bunch of cucumbers:
Final Iowa Results: Santorum Tops Romney, but We’ll Never Know Who Won

On caucus night, precinct officials phoned in results to an automated system after they’d counted the votes by hand. As the last precincts reported their votes, the tally swung back and forth into the wee hours of Jan. 4. Since the Iowa Republican Party announced on caucus night that Romney had edged Santorum by a mere eight votes, it has been collecting certified results forms from Iowa’s counties and precincts.

Thursday’s results are final. Santorum will forever hold a lead with incomplete returns.

NPR—we just want to clarify:
Rick Santorum is officially the winner of the Jan. 3 Iowa Republican presidential caucus. The state Republican Party reversed itself from a previous assertion that it would not declare one, given problems at eight precincts, as The Des Moines Register reported.

In a news release late Friday, the party said it called the race “in order to clarify conflicting reports and to affirm the results released Jan. 18 by the Republican Party of Iowa.”
The preliminary count on the Jan. 3 caucus put former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney ahead by eight votes, as NPR reported that night. Later, the party said there was no official winner, though a recanvassing of the votes showed Santorum won by 34 votes.

Daily Beast:
Did Rick Santorum win the Iowa caucus?

Shot:
This possibility has the Iowa state GOP under new scrutiny as they begin the official certification process, which they have promised to complete by the end of the week.

Chaser:
The national media to date has largely dismissed this story—which was first reported by local Des Moines station KCCI—apparently choosing to trust the state GOP’s initial off-the-record assurances that the story had zero credibility.

21st Century Doors

I saw the 21st Century Doors at LA Universal Amphitheater, with Ian Astbury from The Cult in the Jim Morrison (Morrison Hotel) role and Stewart Copeland from The Police in the John Densmore role, along with Manzarak and Krieger. An amazing high crowd energy show that blew away my expectations

Worst: Van Halen Day 2 at US 1983. Too drunk, too inconsiderate to other acts, too pompous and too greedy.

Best part of that show was day three where every band denounced all those traits without mentioning Van Halen and Bowie ( bidding war for top $).then launched into some ferocious sets. Including this then unknown band who played at 0900 and instantly woke us all up and turned us into fans. The band: U2
