Spoiler alert: That wasn’t actually the speech she tore up, it was just papers with “Fuck Trump!” written on them repeatedly.

OK—this is one for the ages:

“Coach” Dave Daubenmire is thinking of suing the NFL because the halftime show:

threatens to prevent him “from getting into the kingdom of Heaven…”

“Were there any warnings that your 12-year-old son—whose hormones are just starting to operate - was there any warning that what he was going to see might cause him to get sexually excited?”

Reminder—Daubenmire’s son son Zach Daubenmire was convicted of child pornography possession in 2007 (probably triggered by the 2004 Janet Jackson incident)//

As far as I can tell, Zachary Daubenmire has never reapplied to take the bar in Ohio, even after his name came off the sex offenders list in 2018.

WaPo fact checks the SOTU speech, and it is LONG!

And this one really got me, considering how much we have worried about it. And rightly, of course!

“In the Senate, we have confirmed a record number of 187 new federal judges.”
It’s not a record. Trump has a long way to go to have appointed the most federal judges. Reagan has the record, with 383, followed by Bill Clinton with 378 and then Obama with 329. Through Jan. 18, 187 judges nominated by Trump have been confirmed by the Senate. (The Trump campaign notes that Trump ranks second in terms of judges confirmed at this point in his presidency, after Jimmy Carter, and first in appeals court judges.)

When Trump inevitably sends out a tweet on how highly-rated his SOTU speech was (never mind the fact that it was on all broadcast and news networks, so there really wasn’t much choice in the matter), I would send a reply that more than twice as many people watched the exposure of his criminal acts than watched him spouting lies for almost an hour and a half uninterrupted.

One of my tattoos is from the ship that brought my dad’s grandfather who has our surname. The ship, the SS Nederland was part of Red Star Line’s fleet. Definitely looking forward to watching that docu. The Titanic story always interested me not beaues of the rich people but because of the immigrants of various nationalities that were doing what mine did. Max Boot got some of my respect when he acknowledged that Goldwater wasn’t who he was. Jennifer seems to have a problem with what he’s doing to the whole country. Rick is more entertaining, yes but I agree with you that his problem does seem to be more in what Trump is doing to conservatism as a whole. There’s also a big difference between Jennifer and Rick, Jennifer is a person with opinions just like a lot of us- I don’t think she’s ever actually been a part of a Republican administration or campaign or if she’s been, a big part. Rick OTOH has been involved in some of the shady GOP stuff like the Rev Wright ad and the attacks on Cleland.

In a time where the President and his party are getting away with telling you to ignore all evidence and to accept that it’s okay to do what Trump’s done. I can stand to have her as an ally. And she’s also written and I agree with her that to prevent this from happening again that the executive branch needs to lose some of its power. That’s why I’m not hung up on the nominee being too this or that, I want a strong Democratic Congress.

My favorite Rubin reaction shot, when winger Stephanie Hamill, talking about Trump’s shithole countries comment, said “Joy, we didn’t actually hear him say those words,”

Romney makes the most essential point about impeachment: “Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine.”

i’ve said it for every vote up to now and it still holds

one vote takes it out of the ‘only one party’ and therefore partisan column

it hardly makes it ‘bipartisan’ in anything other than a technical sense.

i much prefer this definition:

A bipartisan vote is one in which a majority of Republicans and a majority of Democrats vote the same way”.

or if not a majority, i’d settle for ‘a lot’

re: #376 #thegreatpoolpondconversion (dangerman)

thegreatpoolpondconversion - 200202 edition ———————->
(An Easier Week)

thegreatpoolpondconversion started as some instagram posts and a modest email list to family and friends.

Then I started posting each week’s email here at lgf, edited only slightly to delude myself into believing i’m anonymous (not anymouse).

I hadn’t been watching the page hits until recently.
Over the last three weeks something interesting happened.
The January 19 post has nearly 3,500 hits as of today.
Last week’s - January 26 has nearly 4,600.
I took a look back and noticed we were averaging 800-900 hits a week before then.

Maybe something caught on.
To paraphrase Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles, “we’re rapidly becoming a big underground success in this town”.

And that’s kind of exciting.

Unless it’s that some bot got a hold of them and opens them up every few seconds just to mess with the stats.

I’d imagine that to get her into RMS Queen Mary condition, it’d probably get pretty damn close to $100 million, maybe even a bit over that figure, and I don’t mean making her seaworthy, which she probably isn’t anymore. And frankly, I don’t think the private company that owns her, the SS United States Conservancy, has that kind of dough.

Speaking of Schiff, remember this from the impeachment trial:

“See how you feel about this scenario: President Obama says on an open mic to Medvedev…’I know you don’t want to use this because they’re killing your people. I want you to do an investigation of Mitt Romney and I want you to announce that you found dirt on Mitt Romney. If you’re willing to do that, quid pro quo, I won’t give Ukraine the money they need to fight you on the front line.’ Do any of us have any question that Barack Obama would be impeached for that kind of misconduct?”

Mr. Romney sat motionless at his desk while Mr. Schiff spoke, a slight smile on his face.

Really happy for this. In some ways, he might as well. I can’t imagine that this really impacts his re-election bid very much.

There’s a handful of ships still in service around the world that date to WWII or before.

I was looking around my place and wondered if I owned anything at all from the 19th century. (The house itself dates from the turn of the last century but was renovated in the 60’s)

Oldest thing I can find is a US silver dollar from 1900

re: #148 Dr Lizardo

I’d imagine that to get her into RMS Queen Mary condition, it’d probably get pretty damn close to $100 million, maybe even a bit over that figure, and I don’t mean making her seaworthy, which she probably isn’t anymore. And frankly, I don’t think the private company that owns her, the SS United States Conservancy, has that kind of dough.

She was towed to her current location in 1996. So I expect that there are considerable rust issues and a need for dry-docking at this point.

And to be honest she doesn’t have the history of the RMS Queen Mary since she was built post-war and never served as a troopship. Only real claim to fame is the last and fastest crosser of the Atlantic both ways as a cruise ship, but that’s a bit like being the fastest piston-engined fighter. Wins as a trivia question, but not worth much more.
