This Is Songwriting: James Taylor, “Enough to Be on Your Way”

I’ve always loved this heart-wrenching song. It’s one of James Taylor’s best, and that means one of the best by anyone. And I never knew there was a video, so I’m sharing it with you after this disappointing but long-expected day.

My departed friend Carlos Vega played drums on this with his usual un-flashy brilliance. I’ll always miss him.

This song is actually James’ memorial to his brother Alex, with details changed, obviously.

Carlos killed himself in 1998, for reasons no one ever knew.

From downstairs. Your PSA of the day.

re: #493 PhillyPretzel

Sort of OT but not exactly: I just got three pieces of mail from our so-called president. All three pieces have my name spelled incorrectly. DT has truly pissed me off. Not only will he not get my vote but I am thinking of sending back said pieces of mail saying said person does not exist. I cannot think of anything else to do at the moment.

If they included a postage paid return envelope, tape a brick to it and mail it back.

So, having yesterday made Susan Collins look like an idiot by once again declaring he did nothing wrong after she said he’d learn from this, Trump made her look like an idiot AGAIN for having been so scandalized by the idea that Trump is vindictive, by going after Romney with that video.

Charles Johnson  Feb 5, 2020 • 5:43:20pm

These lyrics are from the heart.

————
So the sun shines on this funeral just the same as on a birth
The way it shines on everything that happens here on Earth
It rolls across the western sky and back into the sea
And spends the day’s last rays upon this fucked up family
So long, old pal.

Last time I saw Alice she was leaving Santa Fe
With a bunch of round-eyed Buddhists in a killer Chevrolet
Said they turned her out of Texas, yeah she burned ‘em down back home
Now she’s wild with expectation on the edge of the unknown

Singing oh, it’s enough to be on your way
It’s enough to cover ground
It’s enough to be movin’ on
Home, build it behind your eyes
Carry it in your heart
Safe among your own.

They brought her back on a Friday night, same day I was born
We sent her up the smokestack, yes and back into the storm
She blew up over the San Juan Mountains, she spent herself at last
The threat of heavy weather, that was what she knew the best.

Oh, it’s enough to be on your way
It’s enough just to cover ground
It’s enough to be movin’ on
Home, better build it behind your eyes
Carry it in your heart
Safe among your own

It woke me up on a Sunday, an hour before the sun
Had me watchin’ the headlights out on highway 591
‘Til I stepped into my trousers, ‘til i pulled my big boots on
I walked out on the mesa and I stumbled on this song

Oh, it’s enough to be on your way
It’s enough to cover ground
It’s enough to be movin on
Home, boy, build it behind your eyes
Carry it in your heart
Safe among your own.

So long, old gal.

I swear the other guy thinks that the reason the tweet dehumanised Rustin is that he was a Black man in life; while I think it was because the info of who he was and why his pardon is important is more needed in a tweet. After all, a tweet is like a _headline_ when there’s an article embedded and how often do headlines use a name when a description will do?

As I said elsewehre, the one good piece of news from last night other than, arguably, the speech being torn up is that his official ceremony will almost certainly be posthumous.

And the only reason for the “arguably” is what the Rs have turned it into, and the risk that while they obviously can’t hurt a California Republican, they might be able to tie her to people in less-blue places.

Peter Baker at the NYT:

The votes, ending the third presidential impeachment trial in American history, were a resounding victory for Mr. Trump after five months of blaring scandal over Ukraine that embroiled Washington and threatened his presidency. But both sides agreed that the final judgment on Mr. Trump will be rendered by voters when they cast ballots in just nine months.

The way I understand it, when she tore up the speech it was rendered null and void. He will have to do it over else it just didn’t happen, per the parliamentarian of the house. If they can find a copy of it it may be avoided but chances of that appear slim.

The longer I think about this, the worse it gets.

How many people in New York’s North Country (Elise Stefanik’s district, if she can hold it) use the NEXUS card program to go back and forth to nearby Canada? They’re fucked by this.

There’s an entire bridge in Niagara Falls Falls that is exclusive to us NEXUS users. Shut off NEXUS to New Yorkers and that bridge becomes useless… which then clogs the other very busy crossings nearby and screws with the tourist economy. (That’s NY-27, the now vacant Chris Collins district that’s already on the target list to flip blue)

And shut off Global Entry to New Yorkers? That’s going to create a clusterfuck of monumental dimensions at JFK and Newark.

If this was thought through at all, it sure didn’t take any of that into account, and I can’t imagine there won’t be lawsuits by tomorrow morning.

It’d be different if it was just his supporters and the campaign itself disavowed this kind of behavior. But considering that his highest and most visible staff are doing their best to stoke this exact kind of flame makes it clear that this is shit coming from and encouraged at the top. It’d be different if it was just his supporters and the campaign itself disavowed this kind of behavior. But considering that his highest and most visible staff are doing their best to stoke this exact kind of flame makes it clear that this is shit coming from and encouraged at the top. It’s shit, and it’s chock full of DARVO.

Four years ago I wanted to give him a chance but I really think he has a lot of similar attributes to Trump.

This has to be the most hostile to immigrants presidency I can think of. Andrew Johnson, funnily enough and he was a bigot was actually sympathetic to European immigrants. This whole thing is Trump and Miller being assholes. It’s yet another example of how Trumpism is fascist.

Just a question, kind of on this subject. If an employer has a jumbotron (8 feet by 12 feet, say) screen playing Fox News (no sound, but closed caption) in the front of a room in the guise of “monitoring,” could that be considered a “hostile work environment”? Asking for a friend.

And once again, people assume that states will vote in monoliths under a Popular Vote system. That’s not how it fucking works. More people voted for Trump in California alone in 2016 than half of the Red States. Hell, more voted for him than the total individual populations of half the states in the country. The Electoral College has created a system where Republicans don’t even bother to campaign in states like California and Democrats don’t bother to campaign in states like Nebraska - the respective party leadership teams just figure it’s not worth it.

The EC is directly responsible for creating these monoliths, and ends up leaving California Republicans - and Nebraska Democrats - feeling disenfranchised.

Americathon predicted, amongst other things, the fall of the USSR, mainland China embracing capitalism and becoming a global economic superpower, Nike becoming a massive multinational conglomerate (Nike’s ‘Tailwind’ running shoe was just starting to gain popularity back in ‘79) and the widespread prevalence of reality television.

Some good news to cheer everyone up.

Every single UK venue booked by anti-LGBT preacher Franklin Graham has now ditched his events, after an outcry from activists.

The Trump-supporting preacher, who is known for praising Vladimir Putin’s anti-gay laws and blaming gay people for a “moral 9/11”, is set to visit the UK at the start of Pride Month in June as part of an evangelist tour.

However, every single venue booked for the eight-date tour has now cancelled, after being made aware of his extreme anti-LGBT views.

The Utilita Arena in Newcastle was the final venue to announce it had axed the preacher, following the lead of venues in Birmingham, Newport, Glasgow, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Liverpool. A London date, also planned, never secured a venue.

Newcastle’s Utilita Arena confirmed on Wednesday: “Following talks with our partners and relevant stakeholders we can confirm that the Franklin Graham event scheduled at the Utilita Arena Newcastle in June will not take place.”

The map shows no such thing. It just makes California, Texas, New York and Florida really big and then conflates an individual voters power with the total voting power if the state.

It shows them by their share of the population and not as their share of surface area.

And as their share of individual votes, unlike the EC, which takes each state as a single electoral bloc.

But California and New York are seen as poles of Liberal Evil by the Conservative World, and that is what they are on about.

Besides, they all know that Trump would’ve won the popular vote had it not been for massive voter fraud among illegal aliens…

Billy Graham once had a private audience with Queen Elizabeth II. Franky here has been reduced to a milk crate on a street corner.

Frank says he’s gonna sue all these venues for cancelling his contracts.

A spokesperson told right-wing Christian outlet CBN: “Since the original venues have broken our legal contract with them, we are pursuing appropriate actions based on grounds of religious discrimination and freedom of speech.

“The Gospel always faces opposition, so we will prayerfully and boldly continue to press forward so that the Good News of God’s love and forgiveness will be proclaimed in all of the cities we have planned to visit.”

One person one vote everywhere
Or am I missing something?

Sounds good to me. States are an outmoded idea as currently enacted.

Lack of decorum and failing to follow norms. I told him on Twitter to put a sock in it, as he failed to follow the norm of having an issue in controversy when he was the lawyer for the polygamist family that sued to overturn Utah’s criminal anti-polygamy law. (The issue in controversy would have been an arrest. The family had “escaped” to Las Vegas.) The 10th Circuit was not buying any of Turley’s nonsense and drop-kicked the case.

I can only hope that the DNC wises up and both gets rid of caucuses and non-Democrats running in the Democratic primaries. Sanders has been a negative for the party twice now, and given what is needed to fight the GOP I doubt they can continue to just let this stuff slide. re: #63 Chrysicat

The claims that he’s going to be even more unhinged now after impeachment and the GOP covering up his crimes somehow lessens or diminishes the rationale for impeaching him the first place ignores basic facts, reality, or logic.

Do we stop prosecuting career criminals because letting them off the hook somehow emboldens them to commit more crimes? Slaps on the wrist don’t work for street thugs, or so the right wing extremists love to claim.

So why are we treating Trump any different? He’s a thug and an unindicted coconspirator on multiple federal felonies. He’d have already been indicted but for DOJ policy. He has a history of felony crimes and impeachable acts starting from before he entered office. He’s repeatedly sought foreign interference and will do so again.

The GOP letting him off doesn’t change fact that Democrats tried to hold him accountable. What we learn is that the GOP doesn’t want to be held accountable either, and are willing to shred the Constitution and rule of law to remain in power at any cost. That’s the precedent they’ve set for their fellow GOPers (because we damned well know that the GOP wont apply the Trump standard to any Democrat who engages in even a fraction of what Trump openly admits to doing). They’re craven cowards who put party over nation, while Democrats try to uphold the rule of law.

The people attacking Democrats for upholding the rule of law are doing so for underhanded and misguided reasons when the real target of their ire should be the GOP under McConnell who have spent the past decade systematically undermining the rule of law and comity.

Daily Kos Elections is pleased to present our fourth quarterly fundraising charts of the 2020 election cycle for both the House and the Senate.

Politico reported last week that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told his GOP colleagues that Democrats “are kicking our ass” in fundraising, and our data shows just how right he was. The Democrats who flipped GOP-held House seats in 2018 are continuing to raise money at a pace that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, while Democratic challengers are also hauling in massive amounts. Collectively, Democratic House candidates raised $105 million during the quarter, compared to $82 million for GOP contenders (including minor candidates not listed on our chart).

You have to wonder how many people he talked out of quitting smoking.

Rush Limbaugh denied health risks of smoking years before lung cancer diagnosis: ‘I would like a medal for smoking cigars’

“Firsthand smoke takes 50 years to kill people, if it does,” he said. “Not everybody that smokes gets cancer. Now, it’s true that everybody who smokes dies, but so does everyone who eats carrots.”

Limbaugh went on to ask why the government didn’t ban tobacco if it was so dangerous before claiming the society had vilified smokers, even though “their purchases are funding children’s health care programs.”

“I would like a medal for smoking cigars, is what I’m saying,” Limbaugh added.

The Pie Overlord!  Feb 6, 2020 • 7:13:57am

Yesterday I watched Jojo Rabbit. I thought it was going to be a fun spoof of the nazis, Mel Brooks style. My review behind the spoilers.

Remember that little German kid from the Disney propaganda film “Education For Death”? That’s Jojo Rabbit. The film follows him from his fun-filled time at Hitler Youth Camp (where he refuses to kill the helpless little bunny rabbit & earns his nickname) until the end of the war. Jojo has an imaginary friend who is Hitler, played by Taika Waititi, the writer and director of this film who is a Maori Jew. His performance as Imaginary BFF Hitler is manic and adorable, but doesn’t match up to Dick Shawn’s Hitler in the original “The Producers.”
The film turns dark very quickly when Jojo discovers a Jewish girl that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding in their house. It then follows down a predictable path as they become friends and Jojo learns that Jews aren’t monsters.
I was disappointed in this film since I couldn’t figure out what was the purpose of the story. I give it 3 stars.

I’m in-and-out only for this comment.

This is something a lot of people who are not directly involved in law or politics do not understand.

States set the rules for elections, including primaries and caucuses. States have to pay for primaries, and parties have to pay for caucuses. Thus any state which is cheap (that is, run by Republicans) tends to hold caucuses so they don’t have to pay for them.

Iowa statues specifically call for caucuses. To get rid of the Iowa Caucus, you first have to flip the state legislature to Democratic control, or something has to cause the GOP to start wanting to pay for caucuses.

Here in Nebraska, that something was a whole bunch of contested GOP seats. The GOP didn’t want to run and pay for caucuses, and they control the Unicameral, so they passed a law changing our caucuses to a primary for this and future elections.

In theory, the Democratic Party could choose to hold a primary in Iowa if they paid for that itself, but it would be hideously expensive for the party.

PARTISAN NOMINATIONS—PRIMARY ELECTION, §43.4 (Iowa statutes requiring caucuses not later than the fourth Monday in February)

a functioning president wouldnt be in this situation

- clinton’s situation was not this situation
- whatever r’s do to impeach a future d president also will not be this situation

this situation is - he did it, everyone knows he did it. a lot of his party admits he did it, while his party will not vote to convict him (except 1/2 of one senator)

they are all more terrified of trump than they are of their oath before god

I predict this speech is the start of the Final Phase of Impeached President and Head of the Trump Crime Family, Donald Trump, into his Krazytown fantasy realization of his idea of America.

He will start issuing Executive Orders essentially making it illegal to investigate or prosecute anyone not approved by himself personally. And furthermore, orders creating a private goon squad loyal only to him replacing Secret Service members. He will also issue an EO stating that it is now Trump’s right to sue any media organization or any person for any reason he sees fit. Our Constitution is dead. It died in January 2017.

A compliant Republican Senate will block any moves by The House to reign in the madness. If you think it will not get this Krazy, you are living in a pollyannish dream of yesterday’s norms. The ideals of the 20th Century State are dead. The Constitution is dead. This is the Age of Narcissism and A Mafia Don with bad hair and orange crepe skin is the Emperor. The only way out is a convincing defeat in November that even cries of “fraud” from Trump and his minions cannot overcome.

apropos of what i said yesterday

the goal is to change direction.
a government is like an oil tanker, it’ll be slow and take time

the current circumstances force us to focus our mission into taking control of the helm / steering wheel (president) and the engine room (congress).

Edward Luce: “Of course, a week is a long time in politics. Things would look different if the Democrats united behind a good nominee and voters felt the slowdown in U.S. growth. Against that, however, are the stubborn facts. Three years after taking office, Mr Trump is the least unpopular he has ever been. Moreover, he can do almost what he wants before November without fear of restraint. Impeachment was hardly a blip. Inviting foreign interference cost him nothing. The vote-counting fiasco in Iowa shows how easy it would be to contaminate public trust in the election process.”

U.S. democracy is sleepwalking into great danger. Yet somehow it feels as though everything is normal.”

I’m glad Romney stood for something at the eleventh hour, but that fell into “because God talks to me” territory pretty quick, and he’s been more or less complicit in everything leading up to his one mighty vote. Nobody has thrown an anchor around the Fuhrer’s ankles from the GOP until Romney’s one futile gesture, and AFAIK Romney seems to have been getting sleep at night through the rest of the horseshit.

Creepy Rush has a medal, Trump remains off his chain, and the Dems running for POTUS still sound like loons or idealistic social workers. Not a good time in history.

But, on a good note, gagworthy nude pictures of Harvey Weinstein apparently were shown in court and matched the description several of his victims offered, much to his humiliation. I can only hope a similar fate awaits our creepy vain POTUS, who resembles Weinstein more than physically. Sure, it might be like busting Al Capone for income tax evasion, but I’ll take it where I can get it.

Glad I don’t have cell service.

The article is kind of a long read, but here’s a pull from down the page:

Beyond Facebook, the [Trump] campaign is also investing in a texting platform that could allow it to send anonymous messages directly to millions of voters’ phones without their permission. Until recently, people had to opt in before a campaign could include them in a mass text. But with new “peer to peer” texting apps—including one developed by Gary Coby, a senior Trump adviser—a single volunteer can send hundreds of messages an hour, skirting federal regulations by clicking “Send” one message at a time. Notably, these messages aren’t required to disclose who’s behind them, thanks to a 2002 ruling by the Federal Election Commission that cited the limited number of characters available in a text.

She basically says that there aren’t swing voters in any quantity; there are Dem voters and gooper voters, whose respective turnouts are based on backlash against the other side. You then work the numbers from there. I thought this was obvious by now, but apparently not.

They don’t go into it, but I believe a lot of the resistance from other professionals is like the joke about the drunk looking for his keys under the streetlamp instead of where he lost them: because the light’s better there. It’s much easier to poll and focus test a population if you think there’s a set of reliable voters who change their minds instead of two fixed teams with variable turnout. Once you go down the latter route it gets really messy to measure really quickly.

Also, from anecdotal experience, anybody who’s an actual swing voter these days is either an attention-seeker or a fucking flake. They will make decisions for random and transient reasons, and putting any significant work into changing their minds to be a waste of effort. The DHS claims that they can’t get good data from NY DMV because they aren’t sharing info and because NY now issues licenses to undocumented persons so that they can drive.

It’s another attempt of Trump to break those who stand against him.

I imagine other states would sue as well, such as Michigan and Washington. It’s possible Texas might sue as well.

I also imagine big money GOP donors on those states who rely on cross-border travel for their business will lean on Trump or the GOP as well. They don’t want to sit in Customs for an hour like the unwashed masses do.

I’ll check, but I think Sanders has been leading in California, the biggest delegate haul on Super Tuesday.

I’m actually starting to think that Bernie’s path to the nomination is looking much stronger than I expected.

And for many of the same reasons that propelled Drump in 2016. Maybe I’ll try to flesh out my thinking on this later in more detail.

Not that unusual, and not just recent. Years ago a Guatemalan acquaintance commented that she wasn’t happy that her kids were picking up Mexican Spanish at school. I imagine it’s just a case of “we’re better than our neighbors” which is pretty common everywhere.

I had 4 years of Spanish in HS, but I’m no longer fluent, due to disuse.

Don’t forget though - most of us (myself included), thought there was absolutely no way in hell that Trump could win in 2016, yet here we are.

So I can’t discount Bernie not only becoming the Democratic nominee, but pulling off an upset victory and beating Trump in the November election. There’s a lot of outright fury against Trump out there, and if Bernie (or indeed, any Democratic POTUS nominee) can harness that wave of fury against Trump and the GOP, they can ride that all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

When my wife and I first got married, we were talking with this fellow in Colorado who’s family is descendant from when Mexico ruled it; he spoke a dialect dissimilar to the one I learned in Andalucia (classical Spanish considered antiquated in the Americas, with some Arabic accenting due to the time Andalucia was ruled by the Moors). If there is a Bernie and non-Bernie vote, then Bernie loses. The surviving non-Bernies will then pick up more of the delegates when the weaker non-Bernies drop out. Bernie has nowhere near a majority of the votes in the polls, at best a narrow plurality, and Democratic primaries are not winner-take-all.

It will be clearer whether there are real Bernie and non-Bernie blocks from analyzing the Iowa results and seeing how second choices fall. I’m guessing these blocks do exist, since his campaign has spent its energy attacking and antagonizing non-Bernie voters and candidates instead of building bridges.

Once you know the shape of the electorate, she argues, you can pretty much tell how that electorate is going to vote. And the shape of the electorate in 2018, and 2020, for that matter, was determined on the night of November 8, 2016. The new electorate, as she forecasts it, is made up mostly of people who want a president named anything but Donald Trump, competing with another group that fears ruin should anyone but Donald Trump be president.

re: #312 ericblair

Get the people that already sympathize with your side motivated and to the polls and demoralize the others.

Not sure I totally Agree with that assessment. I know it’s anecdotal, but interviews with casual voters in swing states reveal but they really don’t pay attention to much of anything. These are likely voters, not confirmed, hair on fire partisans, but they still vote. Not in as great numbers as the partisans, true, but they do vote.

And in the last election were only a few thousand votes in a few states swung the entire election, these voters do make a difference.

However, I do agree that more than anything else, what swings the elections are the third-party candidates. Jill Stein has a lot to answer for.

Who’s your vice president? Bernie Sanders, and others, should tell us now.

…But this applies mostly to Sanders, because he’s rolling right now, and because he has already been evasive about his health, and because he’s supposed to be Mr. Up Front and Authentic. It’s about us and not him, remember?

And so the next time Sanders steps onto a debate stage, on Feb. 7, someone should ask him this: “In light of your age and very recent heart attack, would you please name for us three potential vice presidents you will consider should you become the nominee?”

And if the answer is, “I haven’t thought about any of that yet,” then maybe Sanders isn’t thinking about us after all.

And if the answer is, “I haven’t thought about any of that yet,” then maybe Sanders isn’t thinking about us after all.

As I noted at #236, the Democratic Party has no control over that. State legislatures do. Iowa’s laws require caucuses.

The only way to get rid of a caucus is to either flip a state legislature to Democratic control, or for the GOP to see a need for primaries.

re: #454 A hollow voice says, Guilty, guilty, guilty!

I asked about newspapers. Newspapers are not TV.

From the Columbia Journalism Review, regarding newspaper coverage leading into the 2016 election.

What did all these stories talk about? The research team investigated this question, counting sentences that appeared in mainstream media sources and classifying each as detailing one of several Clinton- or Trump-related issues. In particular, they classified each sentence as describing either a scandal (e.g., Clinton’s emails, Trump’s taxes) or a policy issue (Clinton and jobs, Trump and immigration). They found roughly four times as many Clinton-related sentences that described scandals as opposed to policies, whereas Trump-related sentences were one-and-a-half times as likely to be about policy as scandal. Given the sheer number of scandals in which Trump was implicated—sexual assault; the Trump Foundation; Trump University; redlining in his real-estate developments; insulting a Gold Star family; numerous instances of racist, misogynist, and otherwise offensive speech—it is striking that the media devoted more attention to his policies than to his personal failings. Even more striking, the various Clinton-related email scandals—her use of a private email server while secretary of state, as well as the DNC and John Podesta hacks—accounted for more sentences than all of Trump’s scandals combined (65,000 vs. 40,000) and more than twice as many as were devoted to all of her policy positions.

To reiterate, these 65,000 sentences were written not by Russian hackers, but overwhelmingly by professional journalists employed at mainstream news organizations, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. To the extent that voters mistrusted Hillary Clinton, or considered her conduct as secretary of state to have been negligent or even potentially criminal, or were generally unaware of what her policies contained or how they may have differed from Donald Trump’s, these numbers suggest their views were influenced more by mainstream news sources than by fake news.
