This is the death rattle of the Republican Party, the final surge of energy before complete extinction. Its true constituency, the hinterland gentry, has reached a state of abject terror and desperation, thanks to demographic change and generational decay, and they have formed themselves into a mindless, violent cult that sees Trump as an actual messiah. This is unsustainable, of course, and it will collapse with startling suddenness. The light at the end of the Trump tunnel is an oncoming train. The only question is just how much damage they can do on the way out. It may take decades to recover our position in the world, with major Constitutional change in the process.

Btw, I think Wendell Zurkowitz is right that Romney foresees this and is positioning himself to pick up the pieces and form a new party.

from Nick Hanauer’s pitchforks essay:
politico.com

“What everyone wants to believe is that when things reach a tipping point and go from being merely crappy for the masses to dangerous and socially destabilizing, that we’re somehow going to know about that shift ahead of time. Any student of history knows that’s not the way it happens. Revolutions, like bankruptcies, come gradually, and then suddenly. One day, somebody sets himself on fire, then thousands of people are in the streets, and before you know it, the country is burning.”

To be fair, news is when something unexpected happens. Warren was pretty much predicted to be 3rd, but the polls had Biden and Sanders fighting for the number 1 spot.

Put enough doubt into the populace and it takes hold. It did for Hillary, now for Biden and it will for any Dem candidate, whomever they are.

Romney will be excommunicated from his own party as a traitor, even if Trump loses.

The Republican party came out of the implosion of the Whigs. History doesn’t repeat itself but sometimes there’s some mighty loud echoes. Mittens is a lot of things - some good and some not so good - but stupid is not one of them. This little shiv is strategic, tactical and, most emphatically, revenge served very cold for that photo of him and Trump at dinner that time when he thought he had a chance at the cabinet.

True story but I lived in Ireland for a month during Obama’s first summer. Had a cab driver ask me what I thought and I was candid- Yeah I voted for him and I was excited. I think we seriously can’t discount how much our next President needs to heal the wounds that Trump has caused in international relations. It’s why even though I wish he would be more harder on Republicans, I like Biden the most when it comes to any of the Dems when it comes to FP. Needless to say I consider FP a big issue.

Unfortunately I don’t believe this is the death rattle or death knell at all. Trump can win in November if our side doesn’t come out to vote after bitter and divisive primaries. Plus, our side has to overcome foreign interference and voter suppression. We need to be vigilant.

Oh, I agree that we have to be vigilant. Trump won last time only because of targeted foreign interference in a few key states. Awareness of Russian meddling is much greater now, though. Trump lost the popular vote pretty decisively and approximately zero Hillary voters will be switching to him, while a few may make the opposite jump. As always, the things to look for are voter suppression, foreign rat copulation, and media malfeasance. Democratic campaigners have to have their ducks in a row, and they have to be willing to use the masses of ammunition the depraved right has given them. it is theirs to lose.

And today her model tells her the Democrats are a near lock for the presidency in 2020, and are likely to gain House seats and have a decent shot at retaking the Senate.
If she’s right, we are now in a post-economy, post-incumbency, post record-while-in-office era of politics. Her analysis, as Bitecofer puts it with characteristic immodesty, amounts to nothing less than “flipping giant paradigms of electoral theory upside down.”

OT: last week I was listening to my favorite cinema-related podcast, the BBC’s Kermode and Mayo. A listener wrote in with a minor complaint about 1917. He—an experienced birder—noted that after about 10 minutes during a scene in the trenches, the lonesome call of a bird can be heard. He immediately noted that the bird was the Great Northern Diver (aka Loon) and that it would not be anywhere remotely near where those battles were taking place, and that while for a normal moviegoer it wouldn’t be an issue, it startled him for a few moments.

It didn’t startle me when I saw the movie last weekend because I never would have caught such a thing in the first place, but it was fun to know it was coming. Loved 1917. Anyway, here’s the mournful mating call of the loon:

Call of the Great Northern Diver (known in North America as the Common Loon)

It may take decades to recover our position in the world, with major Constitutional change in the process.

Btw, I think Wendell Zurkowitz is right that Romney foresees this and is positioning himself to pick up the pieces and form a new party.

There is certainly a place for Sane Conservatives. It is going to require that they say goodbye to State TV, aka Fox News. They aren’t going to be able to wrap themselves in the comforting blanket of lies, distortions, half-truths and victimization/conspiracy theories that Fox and Hate Radio offer them on a daily basis.

Trouble is, the amount of reality that it’s going to take to pop this bubble is going to be end-of-the-Third-Reich level.

An Unsettling New Theory: There Is No Swing Voter

It’s an interesting article. One point that it could make, but doesn’t, is that a 21st century swing voter either has some pathological political ideology, or no ideology at all and votes D or R for the most frivolous reasons.

Rational swing voters existed (and the idea wasn’t intrinsically ludicrous) decades ago, back when the two parties still had an ideological overlap.

But this just further reinforces the article’s main thesis — general elections are driven by base turnout, not by some farcical appeal to a mythical middle.

It makes sense when you realize that enforcing a rule on someone else while transgressing that rule is a display of power, and groups that prioritize power over any specific operating principle both need to legitimate themselves by aping cultural norms, but also breach those norms to demonstrate their license.

“I get to be polite to demand similar norms from you, but I also can be not polite and you can’t stop me because I will not reciprocate on those norms.”

Like a bunch of shit we’re watching right now, it’s a pattern that’s visible in interpersonal abuse that translates up to larger social structures.

There hasn’t been anything that shows he feels bad about what happened. Plenty that he wants to go after the people who impeached him and voted for his removal. I think that’s why the idea that anyone could both sides these two situations even without getting into what they were impeached over is being absurd.

Don’t get angry. Don’t tune out.

Get pissed. Get out and vote and make sure everyone else gets out and votes because turnout remains the key to defeating the dark forces of the GOP and Trumpworld. They remain in power because just enough people tuned out entirely or tuned in to their alternative reality bulkshit and thought it was more appealing than Clinton.

Now, we’ll watch Trump try to do to whoever the Democratic nominee is that which he did to Clinton, except he’ll have all the power of the WH and foreign interference flowing in to help.

Turnout matters. Not just in the blue states, but in the battlegrounds where turnout matters. It means supporting the down-ticket races in those states and turning out people like Collins and Gardner who are complicit treasonweasels who try to hide their cowardice but fail.

The other thing is that fascists constantly borrow existing cultural sources of legitimacy to attempt to disguise nonsensical, narcissistic twaddle as a meaningful and relevant thought.

This is most obvious when they do stuff like glob together pseudoscience or counterfactual history, but also includes norms of presentation and display.

Some do this cynically…look at Richard Spencer trying to clean up the alt right’s presentation in public spaces…but others are sincere in a stupid, shallow, transactional way. For both, the appropriation is about obtaining or maintaining cultural capital and thus power. And there’s always a break point where the narcissistic shit leaks through.

That’s the stakes they’re selling us out for. Not life or death, just less than everything they get already.

The folks that issued a condemnation walking out the door to retirement weren’t particularly brave: they were off to languish in their wealth and maybe a new lobbying job. Who we’re watching now are the people who were less brave and less principled than that. They might believe they believe things…but it keeps being demonstrated that their only guiding star is that their kind of people cannot be wrong or do wrong or be held to account after what was transparently, by their own standards, wrongdoing.

Trumpworld is absolutely delusional and incompetent - criminally so on both counts (as well on its own count - they’re all crooks).

No one thinks North Korea is denuclearizing and there’s no deal for them to do so. Every time they suggest denuclearization, they point to the US doing the same, which is something the US would never do.

All the North Koreans have done is gained parity with Trump and have the time to expand their nuclear blackmail capabilities while Trump has undermined our alliances with North Korea and Japan and SE Asian partners. China benefits from the chaos Trump’s engaging in (mostly because Trump dumped the TPP and Trump’s trade war has harmed the US more than China - but the big winners are actually countries like Vietnam that pick up slack in areas like clothing manufacturing.

There is a reason why Dante consigned to the vestibule of hell those people who maintain neutrality in times of moral crisis. They neither enter hell nor deserve heaven, as Virgil explains to the poet he is guiding.

These have no longer any hope of death;

And this blind life of theirs is so debased,

They envious are of every other fate.

No fame of them the world permits to be;

Misericord and Justice both disdain them.

Dante consigned to the vestibule of hell those people who maintain neutrality in times of moral crisis.

The other classic that comes to mind is the Goya painting “Saturn Devouring His Son.” In a nutshell, that is Trump and the GOP.

We saw just a glimmer of courage when Romney bucked his party and did not maintain neutrality in a time of crisis, but in Goya’s world he’s devoured.

driftglass: On Speaking Murrican

driftglass ripping into Brian Williams’ interview with Blue Dog Dem Joe Donnelly that complained about Democrats not speaking American:

You know what, Brian? We Democrats speak American just fine. In fact, if you’d like to drop around Springfield sometime, I’d be more than happy to deconstruct your failings as a journalist in some genuine, Midwest, heartland idiomatic American right to your face. Sure, I’m definitely gonna use some words you’ve never heard from the sycophants on your cable news panels (unless you eavesdrop on them in the Green Room) but I promise you the gist of them will be perfectly clear.

And speaking of speaking American, when Hillary Clinton went to coal country she absolutely spoke to the people there as Americans. As Adult American, with families and deep roots in their communities who are facing the implacable reality of being at the bitter end of a dying industry. And in genuine, Midwest heartland American she offered them a vision of a different future. A better future.

When Trump went to coal country he brayed at them like idiot children, promising everyone a pony, and a cookie, and great health care that would cover everyone for a fraction of what it costs now, and to turn back the clock to 1950 when Coal and Jim Crow were King. So maybe the problem is that, in the specific example you’re using, the voters in question have let Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity take a daily dump in their skulls for so long that they are no longer competent to make adult decisions.

Oh and by the way, if you trouble yourself to listen to any Democratic candidate’s stump speeches, or any of their town halls, all of them are talking pretty plainly and clearly and Americanly about jobs and college and health care and clean water and air and a better future for our kids. But of course acknowledging that would blow all the fuses on the “Snooty coastal elites don’t know how to talk to Real Murricans!” line of ersatz homespun horseshit you pass off as journalism, so as we say here in the middle of Middle America, how about just taking a flying fuck at the moon instead?

AG Barr Calls for Bailing Out Foreign Companies to Counter Huawei
by JM Ashby, on bobcesca.com

Yes, our tax money not to our companies but to foreign ones. I wonder who is getting a rake off on this???

The Trump regime’s official position and policy toward Chinese-owned telecommunications giant Huawei is literally undecided as the regime has scheduled a meeting for later this month to decide what their policy is, but Attorney General William Barr may have just given us some idea of what could come out of that meeting and in the months to follow.

Speaking at an economic and security conference hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Barr bizarrely called for the government to take a controlling stake in foreign telecommunication companies to counter Huawei’s growing access to the world’s telecommunications market.

And Jennifer Rubin goes after not only Republicans, but the media:

He appeared unhinged, angry and resentful in what was billed as a speech but amounted to a disjointed stream of consciousness…

Throughout the appearance, Trump seethed with resentment, resorting to vulgarity (“It was all bullshit,” he said of impeachment) and insisting (sorry, Sen. Collins) that he did nothing wrong. Fury and vindictiveness oozed from every pore. Seeing the commander in chief in full rage-mode, plainly willing — and eager, even — to wreck vengeance on his critics should be deeply disturbing, particularly to the party that just rationalized acquitting him…

And yet, after this eye-popping performance, you will see mildly worded headlines describing Trump as holding a “celebration” for his acquittal. The effort to cast Trump in a setting of normalcy seems unabated, no matter how inappropriate to the events playing out before our eyes

It is incumbent on the media to inform the public when the president behaves in such an aberrant manner. Indeed, it misleads readers and viewers to cast the event as an innocuous “celebration.” The media have struggled to appear “balanced” and objective in an era in which the president behaves in shocking and unprecedented ways. They need to find a language to convey vividly the unhinged anger and obsession with retribution that Trump occasionally unleashes in public.

MacDonald was ousted from Harvest Bible Chapel last year. An investigation commissioned by the church after his ouster and completed by a law firm found that MacDonald had basically used HBC as his personal piggy bank.

From January 2016 through mid-February 2019, MacDonald’s spending included $170,851 on hunting and fishing trips; $139,502 on meals and entertainment; and over $94,000 for clothing and eyewear. The church maintained two private checking accounts that gave MacDonald $3.1 million during those three years.

But this is not the end of the story! MacDonald announced yesterday that he’s starting a home church network for those who want to skip the drama of large churches. Uh, yeah, RIGHT.

The Miami-Dade Democratic Party has filed an official complaint with the Florida bar assocation against Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), one of Trump’s staunchest allies.
The complaint hinges on Gaetz’s leading role in storming the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) where closed door depostions were held in October at the beginning of the House impeachment inquiry.

re: #314 BeachDem

But at the trial, it was clearly the Republicans who were triumphant in the debasement sweepstakes. Jeff Flake, the former Republican senator from Arizona, revealed the degree to which his party members were terrorized by what boss Trump might do to them if they spoke their minds. If there were secret ballots, he said, at least 35 Republican senators would have voted to convict. Such a number would have been enough to remove him from office

Funny, I didn’t see Don Jr giving Obama any credit when he got Bin Laden but I get it, Don Jr is a pathetic dipshit so desperate for daddy’s approval. PS, Don Jr, you’re not ever going to be President because you’re somehow stupider than your father which I have to admit is quite an accomplishment.

“The roughly four dozen most endangered House Democratic incumbents raised a collective $28.5 million in the last three months of 2019, a staggering total that is nearly twice the sum of all of their Republican challengers combined.”

Yes, it’s incrementalism that kills. Right. Because apparently all change and progress must happen all at once or else it’s invalid and just for show,

Not like we’re dealing with an electorate that keeps anyone who actually tries to push progressive goals forward on the tightest of goddamn leashes and pulls screaming toward the right at the first sign of not even trouble, but not fixing problems left to said fixers fast enough…

Again, this “burn it all down” shit presumes you’ll be capable of building atop the ashes of what was, rather than just being left with ashes.

Do the dummies who are still Bernie or bust know that if Bernie ever gets elected he’s going to need Democratic support? God I could almost get Bernie if he was just super idealistic but he’s really not A) and B) he inspires this only I can do it bullshit. We expanded protections for LGBT people today in Richmond with probably the most moderate minded Democratic governor we’ve had since I started voting but we did it ebcause we got a legislative majority. That’s something the Bernouts need to think about rather than trying to make a guy who turns 80 years old next year into a standard bearer.

The technical term is “not guilty”, and it just means that the court refused to convict - whether due to lack of evidence, hung jury, or in this case, because they’re a bunch of corrupt partisan assholes who would acquit Hitler if he was a Republican. Doesn’t mean he didn’t do it.

Susan Collins would say she disqualifies of Herr Hitler’s harsh words about the Jewish people stabbing the German people in the back but aren’t the Social Democrats just as bad for pointing out that Jews served honorably in the war?
