Back in 2016 and then again into 2017 a series of press reports raised questions about Sanders’ wife Jane Sanders and her time as President of Burlington College. The college underwent a dramatic expansion under Sanders’ leadership and then closed in 2016 under a mountain of debt. Press reports and political critics suggested that Jane Sanders and Senator Sanders’ Senate office had pressured People’s United Bank to make a $6.7 million loan to the bank which underwrote the expansion.
That’s the accusation.
Sanders denies the claims about his office, calling it “nonsense” and no one has ever been formally accused of any wrongdoing. That is the accusation. But let’s set the accusations and its merits aside for the moment and look at where those criticisms and press reports came from. They start with a guy named Brady Toensing who sent a letter to the US Attorney in Vermont asking him to probe whether Jane Sanders’ committed fraud with respect to that loan.
Now, who is Brady Toensing? Depending on who you ask he is either a “prominent muckraker” or a garden variety GOP hit man. But more directly relevant for our purposes he was the Vermont campaign chairman for Donald Trump in 2016 and Vice Chair of the Vermont State Republican party.
Even more noteworthy he is the son of the right-wing legal power couple Victoria Toensing and Joe DiGenova, who are at the heart of the Ukraine pressure campaign on behalf of President Trump. They are regulars on Fox News as Trump defenders and in the mix with Rudy Giuliani in the effort to manufacture dirt on Joe Biden in Ukraine. They’re signed up to work for Dmitry Firtash, that Ukrainian oligarch who’s fighting extradition to the US to face bribery charges.
The deal explained in various press reports in recent months was pretty straightforward: Firtash gets former prosecutor Shokin to make accusations against Biden and Giuliani, Toensing and DiGenova get Bill Barr to get Firtash off the hook for criminal charges in the US. (Meanwhile, Toensing and DiGenova also represent Joe Solomon and had Lev Parnas working for them as part of their defense of Firtash.)

The Force de frappe (French for: strike force), or Force de dissuasion after 1961, is the designation of what used to be a triad of air-, sea- and land-based nuclear weapons intended for dissuasion, the French term for deterrence.
The French cut back on nuclear forces after the Cold War, retiring the obsolete silo-based component and the Army’s mobile short range missiles. It is still a larger and more varied force than Britain’s, which consists only of a limited number of Trident missile warheads.

It is frequently thought the honourific “Ms.” was promoted by feminists in the Seventies in some sort of cultural war.
That is not so. The title appears much earlier than that, and not for that reason.

In the Nov. 10, 1901, edition of The Sunday Republican of Springfield, Mass., tucked away in an item at the bottom of Page 4, an unnamed writer put forth a modest proposal. “There is a void in the English language which, with some diffidence, we undertake to fill,” the writer began. “Every one has been put in an embarrassing position by ignorance of the status of some woman. To call a maiden Mrs. is only a shade worse than to insult a matron with the inferior title Miss. Yet it is not always easy to know the facts.”
How to avoid this potential social faux pas? The writer suggested “a more comprehensive term which does homage to the sex without expressing any views as to their domestic situation,” namely, Ms. With this “simple” and “easy to write” title, a tactfully ambiguous compromise between Miss and Mrs., “the person concerned can translate it properly according to circumstances.” The writer even gave a pronunciation tip: “For oral use it might be rendered as ‘Mizz,’ which would be a close parallel to the practice long universal in many bucolic regions, where a slurred Mis’ does duty for Miss and Mrs. alike.”

(I can’t know but suspect that the reasons would be the married woman’s status is tied to her marriage, and the unmarried woman is not “complete” since she is unmarried. Also, the married woman might take “Miss” as a compliment, since that could imply “you look so young.”)
As the article notes, the question was discussed long before Gloria Steinem launched Ms. magazine.
It also notes that business correspondence style guides were already referencing “Ms.” in the 1930’s, and at least between businesses “Ms.” was the normal style when addressing a woman in a company by the Fifties.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said Thursday during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that a sequel to Knives Out is officially a go, hinting that a production start for a follow-up to the money-making and critically acclaimed Rian Johnson whodunit is imminent.
The news comes as the film starring Daniel Craig, which earned Johnson his first Oscar nomination for his Original Screenplay, is nearing the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office. It was one of three films to come out during Lionsgate’s fiscal Q3 along with Midway and Bombshell. As a result, film revenue rose 30% in the quarter, the company said.
Johnson has been openly hinting he was keen to do a sequel to Knives Out, his contemporary spin on an Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery with Craig’s private investigator Benoit Blanc at the center of the tale. I’m interested to see how Tulsi does here in NH. She’s had the second longest exposure after Bernie in terms of signage and commercials. Somehow she has the money to flood the local airwaves over the last week or so. Her commercials attack Trump by contrasting him with “good” presidents like Obama and—get this, Ronald Reagan, but doesn’t (yet) go after democrats.
On the other hand, I was at an event about 3 weeks ago at my son’s high school and there was a Tulsi town hall at the high school at the same time. My son’s ceremony was in the large auditorium while her town hall was in the freshmen cafeteria.

So, about the coronavirus and what we’re seeing both in China and in Wuhan and elsewhere.
Death toll and incidence rates appear much higher in Wuhan than elsewhere. I wonder if that’s a function of testing now knowing that it is out there. How many people get sick but don’t go to the doctor or go and aren’t tested. How many are tested? Those all affect baseline figures.
These are the kinds of questions that epidemologists have to figure out, but we’ve got reports of cruise ships with suspected patients being quarantined in the US (Bayonne) and Japan.
Prompt care is likely to help reduce complications and mortality figures.
Thing is that influenza is transmitted in similar fashion and sickens and kills far more people. We don’t treat it with the same urgency as this emerging disease.
The prevention methods are the same - limit contact and wash hands. We have vaccines for influenza, and there’s word that researchers are working on a vaccine for Wuhan coronavirus as well.

I actually saw this a couple of days ago, when the child was still alive and very sick, because an anti-vaxxer group I’m part of on FB (DAWI 2 Electric Woogaloo) had posted screenshots of the woman asking for advice in the “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” group. Apparently the SMV admins then went through and cleared out all of the woman’s posts, but some of the posts were saved because The Internet Is Forever.
I can’t even imagine having children and then treating them like this.

The rationale that individual members can’t sue on the emoluments grounds is shaky at best since the constitution doesn’t indicate any minimum number or even that a majority of a chamber move to respond. What the court is essentially saying is that we can have the tyranny of the majority - if Democrats were in minority in both house and senate, they’d lack standing to sue on emoluments grounds. That’s asinine.

It was a beautiful gesture when he took time off from his campaign to comfort the victims on both sides of the border after El Paso. Harris had some great ideas on dealing with maternal mortality. Hold up there, I didn’t say I was going to have to hold my nose. I said I merely was disappointed that our presidential candidate finalists didn’t end up looking like our party. In hindsight, I place some of the blame on the damn campaigns starting way too early at a time when people were desperate for an alternative to Trump to consider. If Booker, Harris, Castro, and O’Rourke had waited as late as even, say, fricking Bloomberg did then by the time they hit periods of intense scrutiny, it would be on the eve of votes when the early states could at least weigh in. Of course this doesn’t explain how fricking Mayor Pete has survived while those four didn’t.

Yes, I’ll support whoever is the Dem candidate, but I’m now putting more time, money and effort into local candidates and, of course, Jaime Harrison’s bid to unseat Lindsey Graham.

In hindsight, I place some of the blame on the damn campaigns starting way too early at a time when people were desperate for an alternative to Trump to consider. If Booker, Harris, Castro, and O’Rourke had waited as late as even, say, fricking Bloomberg did then by the time they hit periods of intense scrutiny, it would be on the eve of votes when the early states could at least weigh in. Of course this doesn’t explain how fricking Mayor Pete has survived while those four didn’t.
Yeah I don’t get Mayor Pete. He’s a charismatic enough guy and I get why people like him but South Bend is smaller than both of the counties I’ve lived in. I wish he would considered running for Congress, Governor, or Senator first. I will gladly concede I think Beto wasn’t qualified but I think Beto was offering the socially liberal but fiscally moderate message I’ve been looking for. I also think he would have helped forge stronger relations with both of our two largest neighbors. I still like the idea of Beto for Ambassador to Mexico or the Organization of American States.

She just has an air of cool about her. Obama had that too. Someone you know was intelligent, thoughtful, open-minded, and willing to listen to opinions other than hers. It really makes me so disappointed in the left that a lot of us fell for the smears and discredited her in favor of other candidates. I mean here you’ve got a woman who is Senator from our largest state, was AG of that state, and also had been DA for one of its largest counties. And then what we’re saying about how she exudes intelligence and confidence. She really is a bright woman and it’s shown everytime she’s been in the spotlight whether it was Kavanaugh’s confirmation or the trial.

I’ve actually come to admire Biden a great deal more as I learn about his stutter and overcoming it as I have a stutter myself and I really admire that Warren has a genuine passion for helping the middle class but the future of our party and nation is in diversity and I can remain disappointed that the system as it exists seems to have harmed even though they offered as much as our current finalists.

The transition of power from President Hu was happening around the time I took Chinese history. So we were seeing what happened with Bo in real time as we took the class. That was a difficult class but ultimately very rewarding intellectually because I stopped seeing the PRC leadership as just heirs of Mao rather than people trying to create their own image of China. I think Bo btw was a mayor.
