Lots of IT folks, security experts, and software engineers in this thread saying “the struggle is real.”

The complete and utter nutjobbery that is QAnon is too insane to be contained within the borders of the USA, to wit:

A Sydney psychiatrist who posted “bizarre” alt-right conspiracy theories he claimed were the directives of US President Donald Trump to his practice’s official website has been struck off the medical register.

The Dee Why doctor Russell Everard McGregor claimed Trump had taped evidence of a global Satanist paedophile network, that 9/11 was faked, and that the ABC was part of an international deep state network covering up the crimes of the elite.

Many of the 300-plus posts from 2018 onwards related to the debunked QAnon conspiracy that suggests Trump is leading a crusade against “deep state” forces who protect satanic paedophile rings.

“Fight with your keyboard, knowledge and pen,” McGregor wrote in one post in January 2018. “Follow Q breadcrumbs on 8chan.

“The evil truth will be hard for most to bear. Be brave. Seek loved ones and offer compassion to friends and family.”

Want to know why Republicans are hell bent on getting the Democratic nomination for Bernie?

talkingpointsmemo.com

Back in 2016 and then again into 2017 a series of press reports raised questions about Sanders’ wife Jane Sanders and her time as President of Burlington College. The college underwent a dramatic expansion under Sanders’ leadership and then closed in 2016 under a mountain of debt. Press reports and political critics suggested that Jane Sanders and Senator Sanders’ Senate office had pressured People’s United Bank to make a $6.7 million loan to the bank which underwrote the expansion.

That’s the accusation.

Sanders denies the claims about his office, calling it “nonsense” and no one has ever been formally accused of any wrongdoing. That is the accusation. But let’s set the accusations and its merits aside for the moment and look at where those criticisms and press reports came from. They start with a guy named Brady Toensing who sent a letter to the US Attorney in Vermont asking him to probe whether Jane Sanders’ committed fraud with respect to that loan.

Now, who is Brady Toensing? Depending on who you ask he is either a “prominent muckraker” or a garden variety GOP hit man. But more directly relevant for our purposes he was the Vermont campaign chairman for Donald Trump in 2016 and Vice Chair of the Vermont State Republican party.

Even more noteworthy he is the son of the right-wing legal power couple Victoria Toensing and Joe DiGenova, who are at the heart of the Ukraine pressure campaign on behalf of President Trump. They are regulars on Fox News as Trump defenders and in the mix with Rudy Giuliani in the effort to manufacture dirt on Joe Biden in Ukraine. They’re signed up to work for Dmitry Firtash, that Ukrainian oligarch who’s fighting extradition to the US to face bribery charges.

The deal explained in various press reports in recent months was pretty straightforward: Firtash gets former prosecutor Shokin to make accusations against Biden and Giuliani, Toensing and DiGenova get Bill Barr to get Firtash off the hook for criminal charges in the US. (Meanwhile, Toensing and DiGenova also represent Joe Solomon and had Lev Parnas working for them as part of their defense of Firtash.)

On the coronavirus front, of the 313 cases outside of China, there remain only 2 deaths. These figures continue to suggest that ultimately the death rate will probably not be much higher than normal seasonal flu. And a reminder, that flu is so deadly because it is contagious and infects so many people. The same may prove to be true of this new disease.

It could it mean if you have enough respirators you can keep the deaths low. SHTF when 3rd world countries are overwhelmed by the critical cases. You may have noticed the Chinese media have quit counting the critical patients. 2019 nCoV looks like it takes more than 30 days to run it’s course and the recovered are still not significant in number compared to the dead. There are no numbers for those who aren’t hospitalized but most are being tracked in some sort of quarantine state.

I usually check the following site: worldometers.info

The column labeled critical shows, for China, 4820 critical out of a reported total of 31,161, i.e. about 15% appear to be so classified. Outside China, only 4 people are so classified. The actual number of cases is probably significantly higher but fortunately it doesn’t appear to be a “Contagion” level crisis.

It presents itself as a more serious story compared to many ST series/movies. I credit Stewart for want to be in a show where he can bring it.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Feb 7, 2020 • 12:46:07am

Current thought: the toxic fandom that surrounds ST reboots and new series is very much in line with Trumpism.

The toxic fans are not really evaluating the products on the merits of the products. Instead, said fans often embody the white-male-victimhood mentality, and if not that then just the priority-of-the-past, in other words just nostalgia.

This is how Trump works his marks - by reifying their belief that life was better back in their childhood, a childhood now long gone and missed.

Indeed, apologists anywhere - our ol’ buddy Adnan Oktar (currently in the slammer in Turkey and on trial for various and sundry charges) was quite good at inoculating his followers against facts and reinforcing his…shall we say, highly eccentric…interpretation of Islam.

And he also managed to create a (smallish) cult of personality, apparently centered on the idea that he is the Mahdi. He’s basically the Turkish Islamic version of a prosperity gospel televangelist.

Neighbor uses crossbow to save man from dogs, but kills him (Greenwich, Conn. Time)

ADAMS, Mass. (AP) — A man was shot and killed in his apartment by a crossbow bolt that a neighbor had fired at dogs who were attacking the man, authorities in Massachusetts said.

The death Wednesday afternoon in Adams appears to be accidental, according to Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington.

The neighbor heard a commotion and the victim, who was a friend, shouting for help just after noon, authorities said.

The neighbor made his way into the apartment, then returned to his own unit to get the crossbow, which he was licensed to own and used for hunting, Harrington said at a news conference Thursday.

The neighbour struck the dog with a glancing blow from the bolt, it went through the apartment door and killed the man he was trying to save.

The Wuhan Coronavirus might end up producing a truly worldwide economic ripple effect.

The threat from the coronavirus crisis closed in on the global auto industry on Thursday, as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV warned that a European plant could shut down within two to four weeks if Chinese parts suppliers cannot get back to work.

The next several weeks will be critical for automakers. Parts made in China are used in millions of vehicles assembled elsewhere, and China’s Hubei province, epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, is a major hub for vehicle parts production and shipments.

reuters.com

As the article notes, automakers had done a bit of stockpiling in anticipation of Chinese New Year, but those stockpiles are going to be running out pretty soon - and with so much of the global economy heavily dependent on just-in-time supply chains and logistics, yeah, if this outbreak continues, or gets worse, heaven forbid (which could essentially vastly reduce China’s manufacturing capacity for a prolonged period), then this could very well be one of those Black Swan events that economists love to speculate about.

On Friday, the Trump administration quietly designated the entire Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, which polices US borders, as a “Security Agency,” according to an internal memo obtained by The Nation. This follows repeated attempts by federal immigration authorities to dramatically expand their reach in recent years.

The memo, which was signed by CBP’s Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan and dated January 31, places CBP under the same designation as highly secretive intelligence and law enforcement agencies like the FBI and Secret Service. This grants CBP greater secrecy by exempting certain records from disclosure to the public.

Filling Trump’s vacuum. This could trigger the Russians, at least the troll farm/propaganda component of their strategic forces. It is seldom discussed in public, but the Finns have a fearsome reputation in Russia, as a kind of northern bogeyman, a legacy from the fight they put up during World War II.

Force de dissuasion

The Force de frappe (French for: strike force), or Force de dissuasion after 1961, is the designation of what used to be a triad of air-, sea- and land-based nuclear weapons intended for dissuasion, the French term for deterrence.

The French cut back on nuclear forces after the Cold War, retiring the obsolete silo-based component and the Army’s mobile short range missiles. It is still a larger and more varied force than Britain’s, which consists only of a limited number of Trident missile warheads.

Today’s word origin post.

It is frequently thought the honourific “Ms.” was promoted by feminists in the Seventies in some sort of cultural war.

That is not so. The title appears much earlier than that, and not for that reason.

Ms. (goes to the New York Times Magazine, more at the link):

In the Nov. 10, 1901, edition of The Sunday Republican of Springfield, Mass., tucked away in an item at the bottom of Page 4, an unnamed writer put forth a modest proposal. “There is a void in the English language which, with some diffidence, we undertake to fill,” the writer began. “Every one has been put in an embarrassing position by ignorance of the status of some woman. To call a maiden Mrs. is only a shade worse than to insult a matron with the inferior title Miss. Yet it is not always easy to know the facts.”

How to avoid this potential social faux pas? The writer suggested “a more comprehensive term which does homage to the sex without expressing any views as to their domestic situation,” namely, Ms. With this “simple” and “easy to write” title, a tactfully ambiguous compromise between Miss and Mrs., “the person concerned can translate it properly according to circumstances.” The writer even gave a pronunciation tip: “For oral use it might be rendered as ‘Mizz,’ which would be a close parallel to the practice long universal in many bucolic regions, where a slurred Mis’ does duty for Miss and Mrs. alike.”

In that article at #86 is the line:

To call a maiden Mrs. is only a shade worse than to insult a matron with the inferior title Miss.

Note “Miss” is considered an insult to a married woman, even worse than “Mrs.” to an unmarried woman. (I can’t know but suspect that the reasons would be the married woman’s status is tied to her marriage, and the unmarried woman is not “complete” since she is unmarried. Also, the married woman might take “Miss” as a compliment, since that could imply “you look so young.”)

As the article notes, the question was discussed long before Gloria Steinem launched Ms. magazine.

It also notes that business correspondence style guides were already referencing “Ms.” in the 1930’s, and at least between businesses “Ms.” was the normal style when addressing a woman in a company by the Fifties.

Continuing this long, unasked for thought on Ms.:

Over a hundred years ago there was discussion on how a woman should be addressed so as not to be offensive. By the Fifties, the business community had decided on Ms.

As far as the three honourifics go, I have always used Ms. unless the person corrects me and tells me they want to be addressed as Mrs. or Miss or another honourific (such as Doctor if I can’t tell). Most, but not all women around here seem to prefer Mrs. or Miss, which is fine with me. It costs me nothing to call someone what they want to be called.

Likewise with men regardless of age in a public setting (aside from children), I tend to use “Sir” unless I am corrected to Mr., another honourific, or none.

Some interesting entertainment news:

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said Thursday during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that a sequel to Knives Out is officially a go, hinting that a production start for a follow-up to the money-making and critically acclaimed Rian Johnson whodunit is imminent.

The news comes as the film starring Daniel Craig, which earned Johnson his first Oscar nomination for his Original Screenplay, is nearing the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office. It was one of three films to come out during Lionsgate’s fiscal Q3 along with Midway and Bombshell. As a result, film revenue rose 30% in the quarter, the company said.

Johnson has been openly hinting he was keen to do a sequel to Knives Out, his contemporary spin on an Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery with Craig’s private investigator Benoit Blanc at the center of the tale. Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Shannon led the strong ensemble cast.

I genuinely enjoyed Knives Out; it’s been nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar and Daniel Craig (and the rest of the cast) was fantastic.

Mike Winger is trying to make his name as an Evangelical apologist against atheists, Calvinists and excessive Charismatics. He’s carved himself out a niche. I’m interested to see how Tulsi does here in NH. She’s had the second longest exposure after Bernie in terms of signage and commercials. Somehow she has the money to flood the local airwaves over the last week or so. Her commercials attack Trump by contrasting him with “good” presidents like Obama and—get this, Ronald Reagan, but doesn’t (yet) go after democrats.

On the other hand, I was at an event about 3 weeks ago at my son’s high school and there was a Tulsi town hall at the high school at the same time. My son’s ceremony was in the large auditorium while her town hall was in the freshmen cafeteria.

So, about the coronavirus and what we’re seeing both in China and in Wuhan and elsewhere.

Death toll and incidence rates appear much higher in Wuhan than elsewhere. I wonder if that’s a function of testing now knowing that it is out there. How many people get sick but don’t go to the doctor or go and aren’t tested. How many are tested? Those all affect baseline figures.

These are the kinds of questions that epidemologists have to figure out, but we’ve got reports of cruise ships with suspected patients being quarantined in the US (Bayonne) and Japan.

Prompt care is likely to help reduce complications and mortality figures.

Thing is that influenza is transmitted in similar fashion and sickens and kills far more people. We don’t treat it with the same urgency as this emerging disease.

The prevention methods are the same - limit contact and wash hands. We have vaccines for influenza, and there’s word that researchers are working on a vaccine for Wuhan coronavirus as well.

Anti-anti-vaxx propaganda, Friday edition:

Don’t know if people saw this, but

On Facebook, anti-vaxxers urged a mom not to give her son Tamiflu. He later died.
Online groups that routinely traffic in anti-vaccination propaganda have become a resource for people seeking out a wide variety of medical information.

nbcnews.com

I actually saw this a couple of days ago, when the child was still alive and very sick, because an anti-vaxxer group I’m part of on FB (DAWI 2 Electric Woogaloo) had posted screenshots of the woman asking for advice in the “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” group. Apparently the SMV admins then went through and cleared out all of the woman’s posts, but some of the posts were saved because The Internet Is Forever.

I can’t even imagine having children and then treating them like this.

Well, yes, I’m aware of that. I’m more interested in the question of how the authoritarian state uses its arsenal of communist ideology in the crisis. One answer is an op-ed in the Global Times that warns against “provoking the masses” and while the government empathizes with the pain, “it stands with the masses.” Will that be effective in controlling public outrage? When Zhou Enlai died the government was completely unprepared for the outpouring of grief from the “masses,” eventually relaxed things until the “Democracy Wall” experiment got out of control, and then turned ever-more authoritarian. I think Hong Kong protests and now the death of Li Wenliang, the doctor arrested for “rumormongering” who has died of the virus, are huge challenges for the CCP.

Definitely makes me glad I took classes on China. And you are right while the economics of the CCP are not what they were under Mao or even Deng, the party is still authoritarian. China should be the lesson that capitalism does not always begate democracy.

Trump beats congressional Democrats’ emoluments lawsuit

President Donald Trump beat back a lawsuit by 215 congressional Democrats who say he has been violating the Constitution’s emoluments clauses by profiting from foreign government spending at his Washington hotel and other properties.

A federal appeals court in Washington on Friday dismissed the case, saying members of the House and Senate lacked the legal standing to sue the president.

“The Members can, and likely will, continue to use their weighty voices to make their case to the American people, their colleagues in the Congress and the President himself, all of whom are free to engage that argument as they see fit,” a three-judge panel of the federal appeals court in Washington said on Friday. “But we will not indeed we cannot participate in this debate, overturning an April trial court ruling.” They heard arguments on Dec. 9 in Washington.

There’s no reason to require the majority of the chamber to be party to the emoluments suit. This is an excuse to try and kill the suit before the election or otherwise delay action until well after.

The rationale that individual members can’t sue on the emoluments grounds is shaky at best since the constitution doesn’t indicate any minimum number or even that a majority of a chamber move to respond. What the court is essentially saying is that we can have the tyranny of the majority - if Democrats were in minority in both house and senate, they’d lack standing to sue on emoluments grounds. That’s asinine.

And that is perhaps why China is now refocusing from hard power to soft, even as the rest of the world has seemed to go in the opposite direction. President Xi Jinping, for example, has called for “a community of shared destiny,” in which nations are allowed their own development paths while working to increase interconnectedness. In the policy arena, such soft power mostly takes the form of the Belt and Road Initiative, which leverages China’s massive capital and capacity to drive infrastructure-led development in other countries to spur economic growth that would ultimately benefit China itself. It is a new potential soft power proposition: “You don’t have to want to be like us, you don’t have to want what we want; you can participate in a new form of globalization while retaining your own culture, ideology, and institutions.” This is, in many ways, the opposite of Nye’s formulation, with all the downfalls that approach entails: overreach, the illusion of universal appeals, and internal and external backlashes.

I was more interested when we had more candidates that looked like America. I just think the process took out a lot of decent candidates with good messages. Castro was awesome on immigration. Beto showed that you could be honest about white privilege and be kind. It was a beautiful gesture when he took time off from his campaign to comfort the victims on both sides of the border after El Paso. Harris had some great ideas on dealing with maternal mortality. I just hate that it turned out this way and I really think part of the blame lies in the double standards that K talks about along with the primary calendar favoring white candidates.

cheerleaders for his behavior because it’s good for them financially.

Yup. I hate the narrative “Well, if I have to hold my nose and vote for X, I will.” I will enthusiastically support whoever comes out of the primary process.

Real enthusiasm there. Very convincing to radical centrists or those only paying attention in the last month before an election.

Hold up there, I didn’t say I was going to have to hold my nose. I said I merely was disappointed that our presidential candidate finalists didn’t end up looking like our party. I’ve actually come to admire Biden a great deal more as I learn about his stutter and overcoming it as I have a stutter myself and I really admire that Warren has a genuine passion for helping the middle class but the future of our party and nation is in diversity and I can remain disappointed that the system as it exists seems to have harmed even though they offered as much as our current finalists.

re: #226 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)

I was more interested when we had more candidates that looked like America. I just think the process took out a lot of decent candidates with good messages. Castro was awesome on immigration. Beto showed that you could be honest about white privilege and be kind. It was a beautiful gesture when he took time off from his campaign to comfort the victims on both sides of the border after El Paso. Harris had some great ideas on dealing with maternal mortality. I just hate that it turned out this way and I really think part of the blame lies in the double standards that K talks about along with the primary calendar favoring white candidates.

In hindsight, I place some of the blame on the damn campaigns starting way too early at a time when people were desperate for an alternative to Trump to consider. If Booker, Harris, Castro, and O’Rourke had waited as late as even, say, fricking Bloomberg did then by the time they hit periods of intense scrutiny, it would be on the eve of votes when the early states could at least weigh in. Of course this doesn’t explain how fricking Mayor Pete has survived while those four didn’t.

(There was one particularly weird passage when he congratulated Rep. Steve Scalise for surviving his gunshot wounds and then went into how lousy a second-baseman Scalise is and expressed amazement that Scalise’s wife was upset that Scalise had been shot. “He was not going to make it. I said, she loves you. Why? Because she was devastated. A lot of wives wouldn’t give a damn.” Ask the man who knows, I guess.)

I mean…in her case, it wasn’t just that she didn’t get as much attention, but all the attention she was given was almost wholly negative based on shit that the three white men in question aren’t getting nearly enough shit for despite, you know, actually crafting/voting on said laws, rather than being tasked with enforcement of something already drafted.

I got to meet Kamala twice before they ran her out of town. Once at a meet and greet at a small restaurant and once at a rally followed by a meet and greet photo session.

She was charming, engaging, smart—answered questions candidly and sincerely, came across as genuine. She really listened to what people said and responded to their concerns. I’m disappointed that she got really short shrift, as she was my #1 choice.

Yes, I’ll support whoever is the Dem candidate, but I’m now putting more time, money and effort into local candidates and, of course, Jaime Harrison’s bid to unseat Lindsey Graham.

Yeah I don’t get Mayor Pete. He’s a charismatic enough guy and I get why people like him but South Bend is smaller than both of the counties I’ve lived in. I wish he would considered running for Congress, Governor, or Senator first. I will gladly concede I think Beto wasn’t qualified but I think Beto was offering the socially liberal but fiscally moderate message I’ve been looking for. I also think he would have helped forge stronger relations with both of our two largest neighbors. I still like the idea of Beto for Ambassador to Mexico or the Organization of American States.

She just has an air of cool about her. Obama had that too. Someone you know was intelligent, thoughtful, open-minded, and willing to listen to opinions other than hers. It really makes me so disappointed in the left that a lot of us fell for the smears and discredited her in favor of other candidates. I mean here you’ve got a woman who is Senator from our largest state, was AG of that state, and also had been DA for one of its largest counties. And then what we’re saying about how she exudes intelligence and confidence. She really is a bright woman and it’s shown everytime she’s been in the spotlight whether it was Kavanaugh’s confirmation or the trial.

You can read his book, “The Governance of China” as a .pdf - I won’t link it here, but just Google Governance of China pdf and it’ll come up on a site called bannedthought dot net. It’s the first result that comes up.

It’s interesting to compare the cases of Xi Jinping and Bo Xilai (whose wife was arrested for murdering a British man who had been acting as a financial aid; Bo, too, was arrested and jailed for life). Both had fathers who emerged from the Long March only to later be brutalized during the Cultural Revolution. Their fathers were both rehabilitated by Deng Xiaoping. I believe Xi’s father was put in charge of implementing the first Special Economic Zone in Shenzhen area. Bo was promoting a return to Maoism as a popular mayor in Dalien and then in Chongqing or was it governor? and was it Chongqing? my memory is for shit) by cracking down on corruption. He was seen as a potential rival to Xi until his wife’s shenanigans came to light. It helped give Xi a green light to kick start his own nationwide anti-corruption campaigns, which killed two birds with one stone: he could further weed out rivals and convince the people that he was getting tough on profligate officials and their Little Prince/Princess children.

The transition of power from President Hu was happening around the time I took Chinese history. So we were seeing what happened with Bo in real time as we took the class. That was a difficult class but ultimately very rewarding intellectually because I stopped seeing the PRC leadership as just heirs of Mao rather than people trying to create their own image of China. I think Bo btw was a mayor.
