Trump Wants Nancy Pelosi to Go to Prison for Ripping Up a Copy of His Speech

Politics • Views: 23,501

Remember when all those Republicans said Trump’s impeachment would teach him a lesson and he’d be “chastened,” so it was perfectly OK to acquit him because he’d be different now?

Well, of course this was a bad faith argument; none of them believed it for a second but it made for good media soundbites. And now Trump is demonstrating the kinds of “lessons” he learned — starting with putting Nancy Pelosi in prison.

Oh, and our wannabe dictator also thinks his impeachment should be “expunged” from his record now. So he learned a few things, all right.

UPDATE at 2/7/20 9:42:54 am by Charles Johnson

It’s nonsense, of course — and it was launched by one of the dumbest Trump supporters on the internet: PolitiFact | Charlie Kirk wrongly suggests Pelosi broke law by ripping Trump State of the Union speech.

Trump would love to get Pelosi and Schiff and a few others in prison and the way he’s corrupted the DOJ, he might be able to make it happen too. Right from the Dictators playbook: Imprison political enemies on bullshit charges to keep them out of the way.

It’s the Deification of the Asshole. Just a large segment of our country absolutely worships folks not just for not being good people, but for being outright awful people, especially when it’s against the ‘other’. This somehow marks them as the most genuine of people and worthy of admiration and imitation, because in their heart of hearts, they want to be as unrestrained shitgibbons as the folks they worship.

It’s that kind of shit that made me lose faith in the inherent goodness of people.

Prepare Yourself For a Bumpy Ride Over the Next Nine Months
by Nancy LeTourneau, Washington Monthly

There is, however, one other branch of government that is sure to take center stage in the 2020 election: the Supreme Court. As I wrote previously, they will rule on three cases a few months before the election that will consume both the media and the voting public.

Whether the Trump administration can end DACA
A case that could end Roe v. Wade as we know it
Whether Donald Trump must release his tax returns and finances

Yeah but the song isn’t about that lol

Song got CL’d on the last thread. Here it is again, with lyrics behind the click.

Frank Turner - 1933

“Stop asking musicians what they think”
He said softly as he poured himself a second drink
And outside, the world slipped over the brink
We all thought we had nothing to lose
That we could trust in crossed fingers and horseshoes
That everything would work out, no matter what we choose

The first time it was a tragedy
The second time is a farce
Outside it’s 1933 so I’m hitting the bar

But I don’t know what’s going on anymore
The world outside is burning with a brand new light
But it isn’t one that makes me feel warm
Don’t go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
Don’t go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn

If I was of the greatest generation I’d be pissed
Surveying the world that I built slipping back into this
I’d be screaming at my grandkids: “We already did this”
Be suspicious of simple answers
That shit’s for fascists and maybe teenagers
You can’t fix the world if all you have is a hammer

The first time it was a tragedy
The second time is a farce
Outside it’s 1933 so I’m hitting the bar

But I don’t know what’s going on anymore
The world outside is burning with a brand new light
But it isn’t one that makes me feel warm
Don’t go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
Don’t go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
For the dawn

Aren’t you ashamed of this?
I surely hope that you are
We live in a society that’s maybe heading for Mars

But down here we still have a shower of bastards leading the charge
Outside it’s 1933 so I’m hitting the bar

But I don’t know what’s going on anymore
The world outside is burning with a brand new light
But it isn’t one that makes me feel warm
Don’t go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn

Frank Turner is a brilliant artist.

Donald Trump’s Assault on the Social Safety Net
It’s a policy of death by a thousand cuts.
by Ryan LaRochelle and Luisa S. Deprez, Washington Monthly

This is a long, and horrifying article about what is happening to our country’s safety net under the table, away from public view.

The administration’s unifying vision is to cut back on social spending by tapping into citizen attachments to mythical, unsubstantiated notions of deservedness, hard work, race, and personal responsibility. No president has demonstrated the type of hostility toward poor people that Trump has. No president has initiated these types of cuts at such breakneck speed.

GOP senators face new loyalty test: Whether to approve Trump’s controversial Fed nominee Judy Shelton

An outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve, Shelton is best known for her controversial views on monetary policy. She has suggested that the United States does not need a fully independent central bank and has advocated for the nation to return to something akin to the gold standard…

Although much media attention has focused on Shelton’s views about gold, the banking community is more alarmed by her desire to end federal deposit insurance

Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), chair of the banking committee, is moving quickly to push through the nominations, which has alarmed some in the industry who would prefer a well-vetted process. “This fast tracking of the Shelton nomination is mind boggling. It is as if they have not read anything she has said,” tweeted Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton. “She is not only unqualified, she is dangerous. She has advocated policies removing deposit insurance and policies that would undermine community banking.”

mmmirele  Feb 7, 2020 • 10:36:33am

Y’all may remember that earlier this week there was a bit of a kerfuffle in Evangelical land because it came out that a megachurch pastor, John Ortberg, thought it was better to keep a person who had admitted to having sexual thoughts towards minors in a volunteer position where the person would continue to have access to minors. It took Ortberg’s estranged son, Daniel Lavery, to go to the church elders to get some action (his father removed from the pulpit, at least temporarily). Here’s a story from the San Jose paper about this:

mercurynews.com

The back part of the story is that Daniel Lavery is transgender and when he and his wife talked to Ortberg about what could be done for the parishioner (remove from volunteer work, here’s some counseling resources), Ortberg refused to listen because Lavery and his wife are transgender. Apparently being transgender completely warps your sense of right and wrong, so that when you call out keeping a person with sexual thoughts towards minors in a volunteer position with minors, you can be ignored. ///I don’t know how to use the sarcasm /// here because this is just warped.

One of the “reporters” from the Evangelical side, name of Julie Roys, decided she couldn’t follow normal journalistic standards in her article propaganda, so she proceeded to deadname Daniel Lavery, refer to him as a woman, and describe Lavery’s legal partner Grace as “wife” (scare quotes included). Yes, I chewed her out publicly on Twitter.

At least 61 passengers aboard a cruise ship in Japan have been infected with the coronavirus. The ship is anchored off the coast of Yokohama, near Tokyo, with 1,045 crew and 2,666 passengers - including 428 Americans - on board.

I mentioned earlier that I have never considered going on a ship cruise as a form of vacation, and now I don’t think you could pay me enough to get me on board one…

There is not enough gold in the world to cover the US’s nut at this point. It’s an absurd idea that refuses to die.

Indeed, in large part because the biggest advocates either A) have no idea what a 21st century gold standard would look like or B) do know and look to personally benefit from such.

It comes from idiots who latched on to Ron Paul 12 years ago. Bernanke to his credit didn’t believe in this idiocy and neither did Yellen or does Powell which is probably why Trump hates him even though he’s a Trump appointee.

One of the most extraordinary facts about the 1918 flu pandemic is that British Samoa (now the independent nation of Samoa) had one of the highest death tolls in the world, (20% of the population) while nearby American Samoa had no cases at all. This was largely the result of an early, and nearly airtight, quarantine instituted by the governor, John Martin Poyer.

A Tale of Two Samoas

How quick thinking by a U.S. official saved thousands of lives from disease in an American territory—despite its non-American counterpart being decimated.

So basically it’s a plague ship.

The Diamond Princess has at least been allowed to dock at Yokohama harbor and sick people have been taken off the ship for hospital care. The World Dream cruise ship is quarantined in Hong Kong because eight recent former passengers tested positive for the virus.

But spare a thought for the Holland America Westerdam, which is unable to dock anywhere. Their mistake (some people calling it greed) was to take on 800 passengers in Hong Kong. The ship has been turned away from scheduled ports of call in the Philippines and Taipei and was supposed to dock in five ports in Japan as part of its regular itinerary, but is not being allowed to do so. There’s no evidence yet there are cases of coronavirus on the ship. There’s your ship of the damned.

Another thing might be to start calling her “Ralph” on that thread (probably shortly followed by a block).

After all, she “looks” like a Ralph. What she wants to be called and what might be her legal name is immaterial; all that matters is how someone else feels, and they feel she should be a “he” and a “Ralph.”

I’d love it if just one time, when right wing media and the GOP stage one of these giant fake outrage circuses (like the Pelosi one they’re currently hyperventilating over) if NOBODY in the media went for it. Nobody at all. Just once. Is that too much to ask?

I mean, it’s one thing if you get fooled by someone who worked at it and made it convincing. But they’re getting grifted by idiots, over and over again.

Again, this is a point where it happens enough time that complicity becomes a more likely rationale than simple incompetence and naivete. Especially when none of this credulity is ever extended to the Dems.

There is not enough gold in the world to cover the US’s nut at this point. It’s an absurd idea that refuses to die.

Gold standard and withdrawing depositor insurance are too laughable policies that foreign banks would just *love* to see the US do.

The first would simply cause monstrous financial issues as the country moved to it, and then found itself unable to handle it along with the value fluctuations. And the foreign banks could simply manipulate it for their own gain.

Getting rid of depositor insurance would trigger a run on banks by anyone realizing that their savings are no longer protected from bank fraud, bankruptcy, etc. etc. Which would cause even more damage. And foreign banks could pick up the slack, or realize how easily they could get away with fraud since how does the US catch and punish them effectively?

I’d add that there’s also the strong possibility that reversion to a gold standard (as there’s never been a uniform gold standard as these nutters think they understand it) would mean much of the world dropping the dollar as a reserve currency, as it’s almost inevitable that the wild value fluctuations would risk dragging other nations along for the ride. Beijing and Brussels would be grinning ear to ear at such a scenario.

A gold standard as most wingnuts think they understand it, namely that they could just walk into a bank and get gold bullion for their paper notes, hasn’t existed in the US since the 1930s. Bretton-Wood, which is the policy they think was best for America, explicitly included language that prevented the public from making such exchanges. And it also worked for the US for the 50s and 60s because we ended WWII with control of over half the world’s gold supply. We got of B-W in ‘73 because our shrinking gold resources meant the Fed had less and less control over US money supply.

tl;dr, there was no uniform gold standard throughout the period these morons think there was, and the ones we had didn’t do the things they claim they did. Plus a gold standard only really works when your economy is isolated and you control most of the gold.

Nearly every year in the XIX Century, there would be periodic shortages of specie in rural areas as gold flowed out of them to buy agricultural necessities, flowing into city banks. Movements such as Free Silver and greenbacks were supported by rural citizens precisely because they needed money and didn’t have it.

On top of that, with no central banking system, commercial banks issued notes allegedly backed by gold or silver, with the bank’s name overprinted on the note. Ofttimes businesses in other towns wouldn’t take those notes, because they didn’t know if that bank actually had any specie to back the note.

Bank runs were common if even a rumour got out that the bank didn’t have sufficient gold or silver to back their deposits or notes.

The gold standard in this country is a Dumpster fire of ruined businesses, farms, and banks.

For all of their supposed “independence,” the press are at the beck and call of this administration. A reality that future presidents will bear in mind when they decide they don’t want to have to deal with the press on anything but their own terms.

This assumes that the press doesn’t suddenly find where they left their spines and dignity the next time a Dem is in the White House.

EDIT: Ah, beaten to the punch either way. Welp.

re: #178 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

The effect of a Gold standard is to eliminate the ability of a Central Bank to change monetary policy. This is for _some_ countries a good idea, but a Gold standard is not the only way to solve this problem. If we are ever in a situation where a hard Gold standard is necessary, we will be seriously screwed.

Countries which have completely irresponsible Central Banks which pander to the whims and fancies of whichever politician wants to make changes in monetary policy for short term political pressures or to favor their cronies end up doing better once they lose the ability to arbitrarily print money. We’re talking about countries which have mostly abandoned the rule of law like Zimbabwe and Venezuela. Or countries in severe economic distress like Weimar Germany. And its where Trump will take us unless his wreckingball is stopped.

However, there are other ways to have a stable currency. Some countries have switched to depending on the currency that’s still as good as gold, the US dollar. But Donnie probably thinks we’re being suckers for allowing others to use our currency despite the massive economic and political benefits it gets us for having the standard currency for international trade.

Others have created transnational central banks (The EU, and two groups of Francophone African countries) which are _relatively_ insulated from one country’s political pressures. Others create what are called currency boards where a central bank can only issue its local currency on deposit of an equivalent amount of a backing foreign currency, which has been the US dollar in many of those cases.)

Legalizing Gold at its market value as an additional tender — people don’t have to take it for debts unlike Federal Reserve Notes, and using it to buy goods doesn’t automatically incur tax paperwork on use due to fluctuations in price — is what some of the more moderate gold standard supporters are advocating (like Reason types). Which is not a horrible idea, but of course there are the details. And one would need good rules on valuation, exchangeability, and preventing an employer from say paying their employees in Eagles but only paying payroll taxes on the nominal face value of them. South Africa has gold (in the form of Krugerrands and other government gold coins) as an additional legal tender at the market price of gold, and their central bank guarantees purchasing of said gold coins at market rates.

But then, there are those on the black helicopter side advocating the elimination of fractional reserve banking, deposit insurance, and favor replace the dollar with gold, realizing (or not realizing) that this would cause gold go to $100,000/ounce to cover everyone’s bank deposits, and gangs of people would be attacking anyone with a gold chain or a gold ring given how valuable they would become.

Feeling kinda dark today.

IN ANNOUNCING her decision to vote to acquit Donald Trump this week, Susan Collins said she believed the president had learned a “pretty big lesson” from his impeachment. When next tempted to extort a foreign leader to frame a political rival, the senator from Maine predicted, he would be “much more cautious”. Another view is that, having established Congress’s inability to restrain him, because of the tribalism of Republicans such as Ms Collins, Mr Trump may feel even more emboldened to disregard any rule or convention that stands in the way of his interests. His third state-of-the-union address, delivered to a packed House chamber on the eve of his acquittal on February 4th, offered evidence for that.

Unlike Bill Clinton, who expressed contrition during his mid-impeachment SOTU speech, Mr Trump did not mention his Ukraine scheme or Senate trial it occasioned—which ended in his acquittal on partisan lines the next day: Mitt Romney was the only Republican who voted to convict. Yet he had already repudiated Ms Collins, telling journalists he had nothing to learn, because his approach to President Volodymyr Zelensky was “perfect”. And his SOTU performance underlined that he truly believes this.

The elephant should actually be tonguing Trump’s asshole, but this is pretty close. Also, there should be crying children in cages.

Trump is going to lash out at his perceived enemies. He is going to use the Dep’t of Justice to concoct and fabricate cases against them. He is going to demand that they be imprisoned, tortured, executed for treason.

Treason against Trump is treason against ‘Murika.

The GOP must be so very proud of what they’ve done.

The GOP senators think that they’ve bought themselves a little time by squeaking like little gerbils, trembling in terror of Trump. But any deviance from utter adoration & obedience will have consquences, as Susan Collins is soon to learn.

I posted this - maybe a bit over the top, but then again, who the fuck knows with this unhinged maniac now freed from any hint of consequence for anything he does, EVER.

interesting position for a republican

Vice President Mike Pence defended deficit expansion under the Trump administration during a CNBC interview, saying that debt and deficits are secondary concerns compared to economic growth.

except:
- that wasn’t how it was sold
- you are basically buying the expansion with the deficits, so there’s really no net gain of anything. you borrowed money to buy phantom growth. You’re paying for the privilege of paying the money back

Beto sent out an email today, from info@betoorourke.com, and it is good.

First para:

When the Constitution was adopted on June 21, 1788, it immediately became the exception to the rule of human history, announcing to the world that we would be governed by laws and not by men. To guard against human tendency to concentrate power and authority — to keep would-be kings, dictators, strongmen and thugs from wresting control of this noble experiment — a system of checks and balances was implemented. There would be separate branches of government, and a division of power and responsibility between them. And in the sole branch of government where power is not shared but held by one person, the executive, there would be a further check: impeachment.

and ending:

How many millions are so heartbroken by what has come to pass in America that they have already retreated from the world?

I refuse to be one of them. I still have faith in this country, faith that we can follow the optimism of our founders, faith that we can follow the example of El Paso… but it will take all we have from all of us who are willing to fight to save this country to make it so. And in this struggle, as Lincoln said at another defining moment in our history, “we shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”

He doesn’t do these long essays often, but they are worth being on his mailing list.

This is a really scary article:
Bernie’s Coalition Doesn’t Overlap With Dem’s House Majority
by Martin Longman, Washington Monthly

It explains that Bernie’s strengths are in different areas that those that furnish the House Majority. And that his being at the top of the ticket, would hurt reps from those areas.

Yes/No/Maybe?

To win in Pennsylvania, the Democrats will have to do better in districts like Houlahan’s than Hillary Clinton did in 2016. There’s virtually no chance Sanders can accomplish this.

This is why the party is not going to unite behind him. Even if he has a roadmap to victory, it will be an unconventional one. In Texas, he might ride strong Latino support and turnout to victory, but he’d end any hope the party has of winning a majority in the state House, because those urban-suburban districts would be out of reach.

However, Nate Silver’s model seems to be predicting that Sanders will go on a major run of victories now. It could be that it’s too late for him to be stopped.

The only way I see Sanders winning anything is if the inevitable happens sooner rather than later and the economy tanks hard from the Federal Deficit shit finally hitting the fan. Sanders would seem like the lower class guy’s savior (replacing Trump) with Sanders unafraid to call for direct government assistance and a minimum a living expense check every month.

But counting on a economic shock isn’t something I would put money on since Wall Street has decided that Trump’s corruption and criminal activity is good for business. All those $$$ Trillions of investment cash sitting on the sidelines during Obama having been released under Trump might dry up soon, or maybe not. But when the steam does finally run out, it is going to be a real doozy this time.

My concern with Bernie is that he’s never faced the full Clinton from ratfucking Republicans. I just don’t think he has the temperament to handle the onslaught very well. Oh, and the fact that he’s only a Democrat when he wants to run for president. I don’t think he has the long coattails that we need right now.

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a sudden upsurge in Bernie-bashing from minor-league Repugs on my FB feed. Then, just as suddenly, it went away in favor of the usual generalized attacks on Democrats. It’s almost as though the order came to cool it on Bernie until he was the nominee.

I say a lot of the stuff I do regarding Senator Sanders not to be mean but because well I’ve studied history. History is full of overly ambitious people like him who fall flat on their face. And I really think he would disillusion a lot of people with the process. I think he’s sold the people who support him especially the college students a raw deal.

Google Culthbert Olson the Democratic Socialist Governor of California from 1938-42 and see how Sinclairites (he Sanders of the 30s) got disillusioned with him and launched several recall drives. The same thing will happen to Sanders if by a fluke he got in.

And I posted the link to Talking Points Memo earlier showing how the Republicans are going to destroy Jane Sanders…

My take on why Biden performed so abysmally in Iowa: Trump succeeded in tarnishing Biden and his electability through the manufactured Ukraine scandal. Trump feared Biden as his strongest opponent — he made a deliberate, dishonest, and successful effort to damage him.

The Republicans have been playing dirty tricks for decades: they succeeded in forcing Muskie out of the Democratic race in 1972, they ran vicious ads against Max Cleland, they created the Swift Boat liars to harm Kerry, and then there was the 30 year campaign to demonize Hillary, with the full-hearted assistance of the MSM.

Bernie is Putin’s choice for the Democratic nominee. With so many candidates, the fringe one can win because the sane vote is split among too many others.

Let’s not forget this one:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fired regional administrator Michael Stoker, who alleges his dismissal was personal and based on his good working relationship with Democrats.

Stoker, who was fired Wednesday, has since penned an open letter to staff.

“Frankly I have a gut feeling it is and was 100% personal,” Stoker wrote in the correspondence reported on by E&E News.

EPA spokeswoman Corry Schiermeyer said Stoker’s “excuses and stories are simply all made up.”
