Trump Wants to Execute Drug Dealers, Says NATO Was Formed “So They Could Treat Us Badly”

Politics • Views: 25,398

The impeached president of the United States was at it again today, in a meeting with US governors, launching into bizarre boastful rants on subjects he knows nothing about; Trump says, “The European Union was really formed so they could treat us badly.”

He didn’t make up this conspiracy theory — it comes directly from the worst corners of the far right. Think John Birch Society.

NATO wasn’t “going down like a rocket ship,” of course. Like any con man, Trump is always myth-building about himself. This is supposed to make people believe he “fixed” NATO.

Then he weighed in, in his usual block-headed ignorant way, about the coronavirus outbreak.

But here’s the comment that should give all Americans nightmares:

Donald Trump fantasizes constantly about murdering people, and he now feels more emboldened than ever.

My mom when I was a kid worked for USGS. They do a thankless job monitoring things like volcanos. A USGS man in fact died in the Mt. Saint Hellens volcano 40 years ago.

Follow up to what Anymouse posted downstairs about the Mississippi embezzlement scandal. Here’s a link to the indictment. Because of the way Mississippi does indictments (as in, they don’t lump them all together like the Feds do), you have to thumb through to page 8 to get to the $2 million embezzlement charge.

jacksonfreepress.com

These people were stealing from TANF! This is money that goes to the poorest people, and Mississippi is full of poor people. I want to hit people and I was taught it was wrong to hit people, so I have to wait for the wheels of justice to grind slowly…

I’m reminded of this exchange between Sisko and Gul Dukat from a 25 year old DS9 episode:

Dukat: In Cardassia, the verdict is always known before the trial begins; and it’s always the same.

Sisko: In that case, why bother with a trial at all?

Dukat: Because the people demand it. They enjoy watching justice triumph over evil, every time. They find it comforting.

Sisko: Isn’t there ever a chance you might try an innocent man by mistake?

Dukat: Cardassians don’t make mistakes.

Sisko: I’ll have to remember that.

That’s not why they distrust the Catholic church though. The Vatican under Francis has been like it always has a voice for immigrants but it’s amplified I think by the fact that Francis himself is the son of an immigrant. Plus his outspokenness on climate change too. They were used to pontiffs that just went along with them on the anti abortion and anti gay stuff which unfortunately hasn’t changed significantly in Catholic dogma but seems to be a less priority at the top.

Adam Hochschild in The Unquiet Ghost (about the lingering impact of Stalinism) writes that the police in Soviet Russia were very adept at cooking up charges against political prisoners and dreadful at finding real criminals. They had no real training in investigating crime.

I remember some study that “high security” states (otherwise known as authoritarian police state hellholes) sucked at finding actual terrorists with actual bombs, because the whole police system was designed to ferret out opponents of Dear Leader and was shit for anything else.

Also, political winds can blow funny sometimes: the interesting case of the Russian journalist locked up for drug possession (i.e. doing journalism), then mysteriously released as the cops were locked up and tossed to the wolves (via Meduza). It’s not clear why this happened, but that’s life in a criminal oligarchy where one mob boss getting even with another mob boss means you’re rotting in a cell or in some hole in a swamp.

Correction. Trump’s stupid claim in the title — “formed so they could treat us badly” — was about the EU, not about NATO.

Yup. Trump continues to lie about NATO funding.
Trump doesn’t understand how or why the EU was formed. It was meant to reduce costs to European countries trading with each other - reducing barriers and creating a single economic union. It goes back to the EEC and EC movement that began after the end of WWII. Trump doesn’t know or care why. He just lies.

NATO funding had been increasing over Obama’s final two years and was part of long term commitment by member nations to get their defense funding to 2% of GDP. Everything else Trump says is a lie or obfuscation. He thinks it’s a protection racket.

This Is How Reaganism and Thatcherism End

I’m not saying this article is bad, but I think it’s telling that it’s chosen the very particular frame of “Western liberal democracy” …which conservatives believed in so long as they were winning…but does not acknowledge that conservatives of “Western liberal democracy” had utter contempt for democracies in developing nations that made choices contrary to the wishes and needs of “Western liberal democracies.” Resisting establishing a post-colonial, post-war economic order in which less-developed countries were supposed to subordinate themselves to the new system of international industry lead to foreign-backed coups, assassinations, attempts, government overthrows. And tyrannies and kleptocracies that worked with the conservatives of “Western liberal democracy” were given aid and succor.

Apartheid South Africa. The Shah’s Iran. Propping up Pakistan’s military dictators because Nehru was a socialist (strange, that a man who lived through British economic control would trust a capitalist “free trade” system). Every dictator that was deemed a better choice than an elected official. Over and over you can see both “thinkers” and people with power justify undemocratic means and ends. And generally with the same excuse of the possibility of a greater tyranny from Communism.

So…intellectuals supporting the far right and fascism is shocking if you keep the magnification at a very specific level, where opinions about the international order, or the politics of brown people, isn’t within frame. But if we look at the “logic” applied in the past and the “logic” now, it’s consistent: strip freedom and lock down the culture, lest the power structure change in ways reflecting egalitarianism.

It’s also not shocking if you consider that “the West,” much like whiteness, doesn’t actually have set parameters, and expands and contracts relative to the needs of the powerful. What we’re watching is a contraction of “the West” (and “whiteness,” since we are talking about fascists and racists) to exclude people that want something other than what the rich and powerful want. This is the macro version of what’s been pulled in the US, where poor whites in rural areas plagued with poverty issues—drug abuse, crime—are singled out as culturally inferior and thus responsible for their own suffering (in contrast to a structural critique of coal mining, or farm economies, or pharmaceutical industry practices to push opioids);

This shouldn’t be surprising.

On Saturday, Fox News host Neil Cavuto asked Gabbard if she agreed with the comparison of Vindman’s firing to October 20, 1973, when President Richard Nixon’s attorney general and deputy attorney general resigned instead of firing Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox. The congresswoman responded that she has been outspoken about her dissenting opinions on many of Trump’s decisions, especially with regard to foreign policy. In this case, though, she said Trump could make whatever choice he wanted.

“Ultimately, whether people like it or not, there are consequences to elections and the president has, within his purview, to make the decisions about who he’d like serving in his Cabinet,” Gabbard told Cavuto.

these are real people. with careers and families. and while they serve at the pleasure of the president he isnt supposed to use this ability arbitrarily or for his own personal vengeance. that’s abuse of power/office.

By a 15-point margin Americans say that, despite being acquitted in the Senate, Donald Trump has not been cleared of wrongdoing in the Ukraine matter. Fully 55% say Trump has not been exonerated by his acquittal while 40% believe he has, according a new Quinnipiac poll released Monday. The views of independents track almost perfectly with those findings, with 54% saying Trump has not been cleared and 40% saying he has.

Warren’s view of capitalism matched mine:

So, look, I am not — I am a capitalist. I’m a — I believe in markets. This is what I talk about all the time,” Warren replied as she caught herself from falling into Stephanopoulos trap of what-she-is-not-ism. “There are areas where markets don’t work, like in health care and in education. But there are a lot of areas where markets do work, and that’s what gives us innovation and that’s what creates opportunity and that’s what can grow wealth. But, markets need rules. Markets without rules are theft. So it’s a big part of what I’m running on. I want to see an America of opportunity. And that means we need a market economy that it’s got to be a market economy that’s fair and that everybody gets to play. That means we need a president who’s willing to enforce our antitrust laws, which I’m ready to do.

It is definitely related to NH. He is trying to encourage his base to go out and vote for the “weakest” candidate. Too bad no one has an idea about who would be the weakest against Trump. Hmmm — if Tulsi or Yang win the primary, that may reveal that Trump succeeded in undermining the primary — and may encourage the elimination of open primaries.

Trump lives on the fact that people pay attention to the promise, and not the failure to fulfill it.

Trump is like a guy who breezes into a restaurant, announces that he’s paying for everyone’s meal and they should order whatever they want, then disappears before the check arrives.

It’s difficult to find a historical instance of political conservatism that was not essentially devoted to the idea that authoritarians and barbarians ought to rule.

In 21st century America, it is impossible.

CATHOLIC PRIEST SAYS ‘PEDOPHILIA DOESN’T KILL ANYONE’ AFTER BARRING PRO-ABORTION LAWMAKERS FROM COMMUNION

…Bucci has now doubled down his defense on the ban while hitting out at those who raised issues of child abuse within the Catholic church to attack it.

“We’re not talking about any other moral issue where somebody’s making a comparison between pedophilia and abortion,” Bucci told WJAR. “Well, pedophilia doesn’t kill anyone, and this does.”

Bucci added he was surprised that anyone would take issue with his stance as the church has been pro-life for more than 2,000 years.

Sure Jan. I have a hard time believing that in an environment where a sizable fraction of women died as a result of complications related to child birth and whether children survived to adulthood was a crap shoot that the early church placed much emphasis on fetuses. I’m afraid to even study the whole emergence of the fetus as person doctrine, because it was probably seized as method to squeeze more money out of peasants by selling indulgences for miscarriages.

I’m pretty sure it’s only emerged in the last 40-50 years.

They have held the doctrine for most, if not all of the Church’s history. However until the later 20th century, it didn’t count if it was before “quickening”. Hence if a woman was late and had a cuppa pennyroyal tea or the like, no harm no foul.

The real problem came when they hooked up with Evangelicals and tried to make a political power point out of it.

As for the Padre upthread, sounds to me like he either is one or has assisted others in abusing children.

A little longer than that; the Vatican sponsored a sex/reproduction conference around the same time as Vatican II; they made recommendations, then the Pope put out an encyclical about it. So early 60’s — that’s when he pronounced the whole set of rules against abortion, artificial insemination, etc (later adding in vitro and surrogacy as also forbidden when those became things that other people started doing). The only pregnancies they approve of are caused by husband/wife sex with no medical assistance.
