Apparently, Catherine Rampell is NOT a big fan of Judy Shelton (Shelton’s confirmation hearing is Thursday, and if she gets approved, it’s going to be really awful.):
Yes, Trump’s latest Fed pick is that bad. Here’s why.

In short, Shelton is an opportunist and a quack. Senate Republicans seem to know this — but they still may be too craven to oppose her nomination, for fear of crossing Trump…

Just as troubling as her many opportunistic policy reversals, though, are the ideas Shelton still hasn’t reversed herself on. Especially: her desire to bring back the gold standard…

She has made clear that she would tattle to (sorry, “coordinate with”) the president about Fed meetings. This would make candid discussion — and, therefore, independent policymaking — impossible.

What’s more, she would almost certainly be viewed as a Fed chair-in-waiting if Trump gets reelected.

Nine years ago, Senate Republicans blocked a Fed Board candidate nominated by President Barack Obama on the grounds that the candidate was supposedly unqualified — despite the fact that that nominee, Peter Diamond, had a Nobel Prize in economics. Surely these same lawmakers can be at least 1/100th as picky today.

The global economy depends on it.

It’s pronounced “ten ki no ko” and can mean “weather child” or “child of the weather.” It’s also the Japanese name of a movie that is currently in US movie theatres under the name “Weathering With You.”

Sadly, my wingnut sister is an Andy Ngo fangirl. She called me the other day aghast at a story he’d done about NYC…. a total bullshit story. About antifa mobs attacking the subway, vandalizing turnstiles by pouring honey in the card-swipe slots, graffitiing the cars, rioting and injuring cops who tried to stop them, etc.

I pointed out that this was the sort of thing that if it had ever actually happened surely there’d have been something about it on the local news, which there most certainly hasn’t been. She didn’t want to believe me. Just went on ranting about antifa.

“I have faith in the bulk of the Senate that they know what they did was wrong,” Joe Biden says on CNN, referring to Republicans who voted to acquit President Trump.

And this is exactly why I can’t put my hope behind Biden. He is far too convinced that the sanctity of comity is there. As Mattand pointed out, Obama tried this, and even he eventually learned that the Republicans are intractable at this point, and they’ve gotten even worse since Trump was elected. What makes him think that they’ll reverse course, when the transition from Bush to Obama had them going off the goddamn rails to begin with?

There’s not going to be a fucking kumbaya moment with the GOP where they’ll suddenly be less averse to working in good faith. Either the current crop that have specialized in bad faith are wiped out and more amenable ones are voted in (look, I’m trying to at least humor the thought for the sake of this), or the party needs to be just completely wiped out because the very core is rotten. And trying to reach out with a fig leaf toward them is begging for not only more bad faith dealing undermining everything you do, but more “both sides same thing” bullshit from the media deciding that somehow, you’re the intractable one for not dropping trou and letting Republicans line up to kick field goals with your crotch as a “show of goodwill”.

….meanwhile…

This is the thing; the GOP is going to fabricate scandal about whoever the nominee is. The difference is that there were decades of lies about Clinton even before the years of investigating Benghazi and her emails. It will be hard for them to gin up that much disaffection against the nominee this year in the short time before the election without the backdrop of decades of lies creating a suspicion of corruption. I don’t believe Bernie will lose badly because the people most likely to cast a protest vote because “both parties are the same” are the Bernie supporters, and splitting the vote is the only way Trump can win.

respectfully, whatever bernie actually ‘believes’ - whether he’s a democratic socialist, or something else:

they will paint him as an evil socialist

they will absolutely hammer this endlessly. it’ll be in every ad, hashtag and likely it’ll be trump’s ‘nickname’ “socialist bernie” or some such.

it’s a problem because:

Gallup: “More than nine in 10 Americans say they would vote for a presidential candidate nominated by their party who happened to be black, Catholic, Hispanic, Jewish or a woman. Such willingness drops to eight in 10 for candidates who are evangelical Christians or are gays or lesbians. Between six and seven in 10 would vote for someone who is under 40 years of age, over 70, a Muslim or an atheist.”

“Just one group tested — socialists — receives majority opposition. Less than half of Americans, 45%, say they would vote for a socialist for president, while 53% say they would not.”

re: #76 #thegreatpoolpondconversion (dangerman)

Police use of deadly force and excessive force is at a low because of an increased awareness that this is bad. Crime is at all time lows and police training has focused on less lethal means of ending confrontations. It has reduced violence, but the right wingers want to paint NYC as absolutely lawless and that Democrats enable criminals when there are incidents such as when a ex-felon somehow obtained a gun and used it to attack cops in two separate incidents.

But for the easy availability of guns, those incidents would not occur. Nationwide strong gun control would do more for public safety and the wellbeing of law enforcement than any other measure.

The leading cause of death for cops in the line of duty: gun violence.

But for the easy availability of guns, those cops would not be killed. Many more are injured in the line of duty and are saved due to their bulletproof vests. The solution isn’t to upgrade their guns and ammo, but to make it harder for people to engage in straw sales, buy across state lines to circumvent strong gun laws, etc.

As it is, significant numbers of guns used in crimes in places like NYC are coming from outside NY - states with weaker gun laws such as PA, NC, VA, SC, etc. The iron pipeline has consequences.

Open carry states are awful - and discriminate against those who aren’t white. We see this time and again (Tamir Rice, John Crawford, Philandro Castile, etc.) with deadly results.

Concealed carry is even worse - cops don’t know who’s packing, and the most dangerous situations cops encounter are vehicle stops and domestic violence situations.

Yet every other OECD country seems to manage with a lower per capita gun death rate than the US and less gun violence overall.

Bloomberg will only get my vote if he’s the nominee, but I really suspect he will pick Abrams to be his running mate, because he’s smart, knows what his weaknesses are, and has worked with her. And I think she’d accept.

I don’t know what pool of candidates Bernie will pick from. There’s a non-zero, though I think small, chance he could pick Tulsi. But he could also end up picking Pete, thinking it’s a radical choice, when it really isn’t. He’s the only existing candidate who could possibly think Gabbard is a reasonable choice.

he’s not nearly unbeatable. he’s very beatable.
what he has this time is advantages he didnt have the first time.
incumbency and a pretty well built propaganda machine that knows how to deliver its message to the willing horde.

and unlike trump, i’ve learned. i am cautiously aware that since he did it once, and so far against the odds, he could do it again.

with all that, as you say, there are many many indications that he’s got some serious structural problems that maybe he cannot overcome.

Open carry states are awful - and discriminate against those who aren’t white. We see this time and again (Tamir Rice, John Crawford, Philandro Castile, etc.) with deadly results.

I haven’t toted out this old chestnut in a while:

If you want to defend your home and family with a gun, then I guess that is your good right, and nobody is coming after those rights.

But if you want to use a gun in a public-shooter setting, you need nerves of steel, years of experience and training, along with excellent situational awareness.

That is not a skills set you can simply purchase over the counter at your neighborhood sporting goods store.

TBH, I would prefer Bloomberg over Bernie. That is how little I think of Bernie.

Reporter: Senator Gardner, do you think it is appropriate for the President to publicly comment on or otherwise insert himself into the sentencing recommendations of the DOJ as it relates to one of President Trump’s long time associates?

Gardner: The question is whether the President has the right to review sentencing for criminal justice reform. And he clearly does.

Reporter: That’s actually not the question.

Gardner: Yes, it was. Of course it was.

GOP: We need to give more control to local governments. They are closer to the situation, and can determine what their constituents need.

Dems: Ok, we will give them the authority to remove Confederate monuments.

GOP: That’s not fair. That’s not what we meant and you know it. It only applies to restricting trans people’s choice of restrooms and closing down reproductive health clinics.

Defeating Trump is an absolute necessity and should be our only priority between now and November. To paraphrase Churchill, though, defeating Trump will not be the end, or even the beginning of the end, but it might be the end of the beginning. Trump is not some charlatan tricking a mob of well-intentioned but ignorant rubes, he is the natural outcome and chosen representative of a mass movement, a significant fraction of the American populace, the Republican base.

Peace and justice will not be able to progress until this movement, this base, is eradicated and consigned to the dustbin of history.

No, I am not suggesting that they be rounded up and thrown in re-purposed immigrant cages or out-sourced to Putin as gulag-labor, exquisitely karmic though those options might be. I do think we need a broad-based social, cultural, and economic strategy to eliminate this cancer. It must be identified, mapped, and exposed for what it is, a movement founded on the conscious exploitation of evil impulses and pathological personalities. Government cannot do this, at least not if we want to avoid becoming the thing we fear. It can help though. Congress and the executive can, for example, examine the IRS status of religious quacks, pursue a policy of re-vitalizing organized labor, seek the repeal of Citizens United, pursue un-registered foreign agents, robustly prosecute corrupt local government and its enablers, and expose dark money networks.

There is much more, of course, but the main thing is to have conscious direction, a defined purpose, that millions can apply in their daily lives and activities.

Pardons open door to Stone being forced to testify to his actions and those of Trump without any 5A right against self incrimination. It would force Stone to spill the beans.

That’s about the only reason I can figure. We’ve seen Trump pardon Arpaio even before a sentence was handed down, so we know he doesn’t care when the stakes aren’t high, but here it would put himself in jeopardy since Stone knows a lot more than most others in Trumpworld as to Trump’s specific knowledge and crimes conducted on Trump’s behalf.

She’s assuming that low turnout primary will help elect her, especially among residents who might have supported Crowley but didn’t vote. Of course, the turnout will be much higher because it’s a presidential year and there is a hotly contested race for the Democratic nominee. But as a native Chicagoan, I remember the bleak year that Larouchies captured a couple positions in the Democratic primary because voters opposed to the establishment candidates were never informed by the media who the challengers were. (I didn’t vote for those positions because I didn’t know anything about these candidates and had learned years earlier not to vote for people as a protest unless you really knew who they were)
