Bring to mind the image from Titanic of the first class passengers showing up in the midst of the sinking in their finest, asking stewards for brandy and refusing life jackets because they intended to go out “looking their best.”

…I can see where the folks seeing the swastika in there are coming from. The whole thing is just not a very well thought out design and yet another example of brand officers and visual design artists not realizing the unintentional results of their designs.

It’s also just an ugly logo that melts together too much as is.

Sigh. I made a valiant (but of course futile) effort by commenting on the FB page of a Bernie cousin who is sure that the road to victory is by moderates joining the progressives and crowning Bernie as the nominee. My last remark on her page was on the Gallup poll showing the American antipathy to socialism. And her response was the same as that of my 33 year old nephew: it’s democratic socialism. Democratic socialism.

These Berniebros cannot see that to the average voter there is no distinction. There is nothing that will persuade them otherwise. So the important task is to focus on those who are not part of the cults and get them to vote Democratic no matter what.

One of my Republican investment managers who supported Hillary, does not like Trump, and hates Bernie, originally was hostile to Warren but seems to have warmed up to her — he was very enthusiastic about her intelligence and capabilities. Unfortunately, he does not share my concern that we are living in 1930’s Germany. He believes our institutions will withstand the onslaught from Trump. But that is exactly how a dictator can assume power.

Bernie Bros are making it very clear that they have zero intentions of voting for the eventual Democratic nominee if it’s not Saint Bernie. This is going to be worse than 2016. Thankfully, they’re not the Democratic base so we will have to depend on minority voters and suburban women to do the hard work in electing a Democratic President.

Such a predictable cycle of events. A GOP president blows up the deficit to unprecedented, ridiculous levels, then Republicans start claiming they need to cut entitlement programs to “balance the budget.” This happens EVERY damned time the GOP gains power.

That was the plan all along

re: #38 The Pie Overlord!

Remarks by President Trump at International Association of Chiefs of Police
Issued on: October 8, 2018

“…And I have directed the Attorney General’s office to immediately go to the great city of Chicago to help straighten out the terrible shooting wave. We want to straighten it out. We want to straighten it out fast. There’s no reason for what’s going on there. (Applause.)

I’ve told them to work with local authorities to try to change the terrible deal the city of Chicago entered into with ACLU, which ties law enforcement’s hands; and to strongly consider stop-and-frisk. It works, and it was meant for problems like Chicago. (Applause.) It was meant for it. Stop-and-frisk.

And Rudy Giuliani, when he was mayor of New York City, had a very strong program of stop-and-frisk. And it went from an unacceptably dangerous city to one of the safest cities in the country — and, I think, the safest big city in the country. So it works. It’s got to be properly applied, but stop-and-frisk works.”

It’s also DOA, just as surely as Trump’s ME peace plan was DOA.
It’s also DOA as relating to Trump’s intention to gut and filet health care funding under Medicare/Medicaid/SNAP/Obamacare.

My question got CL’d but I am curious where the Swedish Strv 103 fell in Scottish Dragon’s definition of what is, and is not, a tank.

Its an armored combat vehicle, fully tacked, designed for combat against other armored vehicles. It is a “tank” and was an excellent if unusual one. Modern electronic stabilization and fire control systems rendered its compromises no longer necessary, but it would have done very well against a first generation T72.

If it were designed to haul crunchies (Aka infantry) or has armament insufficient to deal one on one with tanks, then it is not a tank.

PS. No wheeled vehicle is a tank. A deathtrap, yes, but not a tank.

Well, a huge variety of German AFV tank destroyers were used as tanks because they were much cheaper to build, but had difficulty in performing all the tasks that a tank needed to perform…which is why tank destroyers were kinda considered to be in their own niche.

Tank destroyer is a role, not a design type. Cheaper vehicles have tended to be used in the role (panzerjagera, M10, Archer) but the US Army realized that the only effective tax destroyer was a tank and gave the role back to Armor after WWII and deleting TD as a branch.

Disagree. TD was a design type since it was generally meant to be an ambush hunter and use speed, long range weapons and/or low visibility to escape retaliation. The design features were markedly different from other ‘tanks’ of the period.

It’s a little more complex than that, and Germany (and to a much lesser extent, the Soviet Union) made purpose built TD that made deliberate use of those features (cough cough the Ferdinand, lots of Stug III and IV, the Hetzer) that ended being used as tanks instead of for what they were purpose built to do. It’s kind of backwards from what you suggest.

Tank destroyer is a role, not a design type. Cheaper vehicles have tended to be used in the role (panzerjagera, M10, Archer) but the US Army realized that the only effective tax destroyer was a tank and gave the role back to Armor after WWII and deleting TD as a branch.

The US TD doctrine never really got itself straightened out since the rules changes between 1940 and 1944-45, including the vehicles involved. Plus the nature of combat in Europe (mainly offensive) didn’t really fit the doctrine either. (I think from a book that I read they got to operate according to doctrine with a TD battalion twice during the war.) So the TDs spent most of the war parceled out to the infantry battalions as support - where they were generally well-liked and appreciated. And the M-10 was intended as a stopgap design as it was.

Ultimately they used ambush because they were bad tanks, not because it was TD doctrine.

Base US doctrine for the TD was to have a mobile anti-tank force that could be quickly moved into position to stop/prevent a breakthrough. A bit of disagreement between whether towed (easier to hide, cheaper) or self-propelled was the route to follow and they wavered back and forth a bit before 1944. (And found out in 1944 that towed guns had very limited off-road mobility and needed time to properly set up and conceal.)

The Hellcat feels like the exception because it was purpose built to be stupid fast, easy to maintain and heavily gunned at a time when allied armor comparatively sucked. So at least it addressed a real problem with an innovative solution.

The irony? The troops preferred the m10 wolverine to it, though it did have the best kill loss ratio of the TDs.

122
Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))  Feb 11, 2020 • 1:16:17pm

Germans had a lot of outdated tank chassis that were under-gunned against Soviet armor, so they kept the production lines running and just changed the superstructure replacing the turret with a larger, fixed gun that would not fit otherwise.

There’s a lot going on here:

Jordan Peterson is recovering from a severe addiction to benzodiazepine tranquilizers and was recently near death in an induced coma, his daughter Mikhaila said.

He is being treated at a clinic in Russia after being repeatedly misdiagnosed at several hospitals in North America, she said.

The University of Toronto psychologist who became an intellectual hero to a global audience by aligning self-help theory with anti-progressive politics was first prescribed the medication a few years ago to treat anxiety after what Mikhaila described as an autoimmune reaction to food. His physical dependence on it became apparent to his family last April, when his wife Tammy was diagnosed with cancer.

The last year, which saw him retreat from public life after swiftly becoming one of the most famous authors in the world, has been an “absolute hell,” said Mikhaila, also a well known speaker on diet, who advocates eating only beef.

What Joe Walsh et al. need to realize is that there is nothing ‘unique’ about Trump. He is the natural result of decades of GOP degeneration to become the trash fire it now is.

There were enough Republican senators with consciences back in the Nixon era to force Nixon’s resignation for much lesser crimes.

The GOP ‘lesson learned’ from Nixon has been to ruthlessly excise all traces of conscience from its voters and elected officials. This is presently 98+% successful, and Republicans are diligently working on getting it to 100%.

So it is appreciated that Walsh is anti-Trump, but he did cheer loudly for every step on the GOP’s path from Nixon to Trump.

My thought as well, although there’s a chance that a supposedly hostile trial judge could be used by Stone’s lawyers as grounds for an appeal, especially if they can make sure that appeal is heard by right wing fellow travelers.

What a time, when thinking of federal case outcomes being determined by whether or not appellate judges are GOP apparatchiks is perfectly rational.

As I replied to him, the assumption of good faith only works long as all sides actually act in good faith. Soon as a bad faith actor gets involved, the assumption of good faith immediately undermines itself once said bad faith targets and accuses those acting faithfully as being the real provocateurs. Treating that projection credulously upends it all, treating the provocateurs as valued members and those trying to preserve the norms as saboteurs.

I’m afraid Newsom’s arguments, though legitimate, will be stonewalled with everything else. Any inertia stops cold when important decisions are made illegally by a justice and governmental system that has become full blown fascist and all the wagons are circled around the biggest liar and fascist of them all.

What “we” are up against is a very solid brick wall. Until the Dem candidates speak openly about this - what’s at stake and the how to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles - all the well-intentioned lawsuits and idealistic bantering goes nowhere.

Unfortunately, Newsom is firmly in the idealistic bantering stage, as is every Dem presidential candidate I’ve heard so far. I’m not the smartest person around and I don’t have a solution, but I would hope someone smarter than me has a better idea than this Hail Mary approach of throwing shit against the wall that have not amounted to any gains. Supposedly, there are brilliant minds out there. They have to do better than this.

I’ve bolded the most painful part. E.g., if a Democrats wins the presidency, but Republicans keep control of the Senate, it is certain that no legislation will pass that is not an unconditional surrender to Republicans.

This will be processed by way too many malicious both-sides types and extremely stupid people as a ‘Democrat loss’, with obvious consequences for the 2022 midterms and 2024 election.

We’ve become a very well-heeled banana republic.

Reminds me of all the Saddam Hussein statues we saw downed early in the Iraq war. Hussein lived for the fear and admiration of his countrymen and ultimately pulled the strings in his thoroughly corrupt government, right down to Baghdad Bob’s glowing daily reports that amounted to science fiction. All we’re missing are the statues.

Let’s just impeach the motherfucker again. Maybe we can get another GOP senator to defect the second time.

Trump basically re-endorses stop-and-frisk. He says Bloomberg was “so disingenuous” for going to a church in November and apologizing for it. “He looked pathetic,” Trump says.

Trump would never consider accepting responsibility and he’s not capable of apology imo.

It gets worse by leaps and bounds. Being acquitted or not guilty or whatever the fuck anybody may choose to call it only emboldened that prick, just like everyone with a third of a working brain suspected it would.

If the hope was it would expose what an immoral opportunistic liar Trump is - congratulations - but the fact remains that the people who understand that are not the people in power, and “our” people make no gains with it. Meanwhile, his supporters are basking in it, and feel invincible.

Oh, his supporters both in Congress and the electorate most assuredly recognize what an immoral opportunistic liar Trump is. The hemming and hawing from Sen. Collins, and Sen. Alexander made that clear. They just approve. That’s the galling thing: they see it and they’re all goddamn for it. THey’ve hitched their star to unfettered authoritarian empowerment. And our busted ass system can’t do a fucking thing to keep them from razing it all to the ground so Trump can have his goddamn golden throne for everyone to see and bend knee to. All because they’re getting their 30 pieces of silver and the joy of curbstomping some libs and PoC for sport.

President of his cronies, by his cronies, for his cronies. That this isn’t the headline of the day - every day - is the depths of the fawning US media. The only way he wins re-election is via fraud & the media & the GOP will be helping him all the way.
