Trump Says He Has “The Absolute Right” to Interfere in Long-Time Crony Roger Stone’s Sentencing, as the Entire Prosecution Team Resigns

Politics • Views: 22,610
Roger Stone (R) in one of his frequent appearances on Alex Jones' conspiracy show

The United States is having a real moment today. An ominous moment, fraught with disturbing portents.

Sounds dramatic, but let’s start with the most blatant example of corruption yet from the crime family in the White House — and their crony who leads the Department of Justice.

CREW Requests DOJ Records on Roger Stone’s Reduced Sentencing - CREW

On February 10, 2020, the Department of Justice recommended a seven to nine year sentence for Roger Stone on charges of obstructing  a congressional investigation, making false statements to Congress, and witness tampering during the Russia investigation. Trump tweeted that the recommendation was “horrible and very unfair” and shortly after, a senior DOJ official intervened to overrule the front-line prosecutors and announced that they would be recommending a more lenient sentence. Four DOJ prosecutors have resigned from the case since the announcement.

CREW has requested communications from the DOJ and the US Attorney’s office about Stone’s sentencing recommendation, including with President Trump and Attorney General Barr.

Trump was just on Fox News saying he didn’t speak to Barr, which means any day we’ll see the phone records showing he did. But he says he could if he wanted to. He has “the absolute right” to do this. But he didn’t. But he could.

But that isn’t all our very bad president is up to today. He also wants the military to take disciplinary action against Lt. Col. Vindman, who testified at his impeachment hearings in a way King Donald did not like. In other words, told the truth.

These two incidents demonstrate a president who believes he’s beyond the reach of the law, backed by a subservient political party that will make it so. And those definitely qualify as “disturbing portents.” We just took another big step toward dictatorship.

And considering the state of our judiciary, with Trump allowed to make so many appointments precisely because of the Senate, that’s a bleak fucking hope.

Doing my taxes
My adjusted gross income is down ~5% from last year
My standard deduction increased by ~1.67%
My taxable income is down ~7.9%
My tax liability has increased 1.1%
My taxes withheld increased 1.03%
My rebate increased 1.9%

So, basically my taxes went up

The courts are one of our last hopes.

And we’re quickly losing them too. In addition to what happened today remember that statement from a Judge like a week or so ago where he said he was going to give up on trying to enforce an order against the government because they had made clear they were just going to ignore it no matter what?

Forget slipperly slope, we’re practically off the edge of a fucking CLIFF here.

Trump’s latest rally stunts are designed to get you to surrender, Greg Sargent, WaPo

Whether by instinct or design, Trump and his propagandists plainly see their successful sowing of doubt in the integrity of our political system — their sowing of a kind of sneaking dread that Trump is successfully corrupting everything in sight — as being in some basic sense a positive for him.
But we don’t have to succumb to any of it.

People don’t seem to understand the tentacles of fascism are more than concentration camps. In fact, even without the camps, all the mechanics were already in place. They are being put in place right now, every single day.

I wonder if the Germans that pretended they didn’t know what was going on at the time referred to all the doomsayers as snowflakes. When it came down to driving their neighbors from their homes, into ghettos and cattle cars, they still claimed they didn’t know. They accepted NO blame for their shitty, selfish decisions. Even afterwards, when it was all lain bare for them to see, nobody would accept it was by allowing fascists to come to power they were in any way responsible - no, they’d been duped. Oops, my bad. Sorry not sorry.

And here we are, 2020, and it’s down to the fascist GOP and the snowflakes. Again.

Why would Kamala want the job? It’s a step down from Senator and in 4-6 yrs she’s out of a job. An AG is also supposed to be somewhat non-partisan and it’s better to run for President in 2028 as a Senator. There are dozens who can do the job well.

re: #35 Eclectic Cyborg

Warren needs a makeover if she ultimately becomes the nominee. Let me preface that by saying I’m a woman, don’t wish to bag on my sisters, but Appearance is a thing.

Warren comes across like the librarian that got 20 minutes’ warning before she had to be in public, that was cleaning out the garage an hour before, doesn’t own a decent pair of shoes, seldom looks in a mirror.

Do something with that hair. Wear some goddamned makeup. Look presidential. Most women look better for a job interview, unless that interview is for a park ranger. That isn’t holding women to a different standard, it’s just a fact.

A man - even an orange one - can put on a suit and already look 100% more electable. Warren needs to accept that and step up her game. Doesn’t mean it’s right or fair or anything else, but it has to happen. There’s a time to clean the garage and a time to get fancy. Election time falls under fancy.

No shit.
It’s like how most of the country likes Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the aspects of the ACA, but as soon as some wingnut cries “SOCIALISM” they’re all running for the pitchforks and torches

I really wonder if this exact nonsense (i.e., anything even slightly left of center being demonized as socialism/communism) happened in Weimar Germany to help the Nazis get into power.

Anyone who would mention Chris Stewart and intelligence in the same sentence…

Chris Stewart, according to wiki—His time in Congress has been marked by his efforts to defund or repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), his denial of climate change, and his vigorous defense of President Donald Trump.

He’s also Chair of the anti-socialism caucus (which I never knew existed until right now). Also—A July 2019 poll showed Stewart with the lowest approval rating of any Utah congressperson which makes him an ideal trump appointee.

That’s the paradox, isn’t it? Fox News and hate radio must be ended, and the only apparent way to do that is via government censorship — a cure worse than the disease.

From balloon-juice.com:

Instead, a brokered convention is one where marginal candidates make deals with one of the delegate leaders and pledge their delegates to them. The second round of voting superdelegate release complicates this - in hindsight it might have been smart to make that the third round, since the second round would give candidates a chance to do some horse trading without the complication of 771 new votes.

“It was a moment of singular cruelty and disrespect,” Rubin said. “One saw a flash in the exchange with Klobuchar the same sense of entitlement, cruelty and lack of simple decency that Christine Blasey Ford allegedly experienced way back when, the memory seared in her brain of two obnoxious teens laughing at her ordeal.” Noting Kavanaugh’s apology, Rubin wrote: “The damage was done. You can’t use program monies for overtly religious actions.

So, for example, it’s perfectly OK and laudable to run a non-profit that helps women get out of sex trafficking. What is illegal is forcing them to listen to sermons, engage in other religious activities (like prayer), forcing them go to only one church, forcing them to volunteer at only that one church and restricting their reading material based on religious beliefs.

There are quite a number of religious non-profits (Catholic Charities and Lutheran World Services comes to mind) which take government grants and generally provide their services in a secular manner. But these guys, their whole thing is religious from start to finish. That’s why Lobert is unwilling to share her manual. It’s probably chock-full of First Amendment violations from page one to the final page of the appendix.

The fact of the matter is that the marriage between the Mormons and the Religious Right is one of convenience. Evangelicals, if quizzed closely enough, will admit that they think Mormons are cultists. But the two groups will make common cause on things like anti-abortion laws and suppressing women’s rights. He made one courageous decision, now it’s back to business as usual trying to stand shoulder to shoulder with the other assholes, except they threaten to play rough. Oh well. That’s your pack, Mitt. Love ‘em or leave ‘em.

I can’t find anything about Romney wanting to attend CPAC—

Romney has not attended the annual event since (2013), and his plans for this year were not clear. A representative for Romney declined to comment Monday, and CPAC did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Washington Post.

If he has no plans to go (again) that would be a lot more awesome than supporting that den of dicks.

I just thought I was missing something, because I’d not heard anything about him wanting to go.

I have never been more afraid for this country before in my life.

I bet that’s what Republicans thought in late 2008.

I’d also like to see the relevant state bar associations open disciplinary proceedings against all Trump/GOP lawyers who have lied to a tribunal or otherwise warrant discipline.

The impeachment trial alone should furnish a dozen or so cases in point.

Maybe he’s looking to get martyred…

The fact of the matter is that the marriage between the Mormons and the Religious Right is one of convenience. Evangelicals, if quizzed closely enough, will admit that they think Mormons are cultists. But the two groups will make common cause on things like anti-abortion laws and suppressing women’s rights. I’d personally like that facade to crack, and Romney still wanting to go to CPAC could help. Some people are just going to be stupid and call him names or worse.

It may crack when enough Mormons realize that Evangelicals are aiming for nothing less than total control, and making an alarming amount of progress toward it. They have to know that a revitalized secular society would be far more tolerant of Mormonism than a Dominionist dictatorship would be.

So the erasure is essentially full on and hopeless for Warren at this point, is what I’m getting so far from NH, and we can only expect more of it until she drops out and all the news coverage beats up on her like they did Kamala when she dropped out.

Fun. Fantastic. Fucking hell.

Looks like he was there in 2014 & 2015, or at least made speeches on behalf of. Still hunting down each year after. He was a straw poll favorite multiple times, from what I have found thus far.

He was digging on that horseshit agenda up til the time he wasn’t, is for sure. I’m trying to find out the defining moment, if any, he distanced himself.

OT When I was going to work this morning at the train station there was one of Sen Sanders’ campaigners. One sign said, “There should be no billionaires.” I had to catch the next train so I did not see any more of the campaign materials. Since this what Sen Sanders thinks of rich people I am leaning toward Warren.

I don’t have much problem with “there should be no billionaires.” Spending $10,000 a DAY, that one billion runs out pretty fast. Like over 270 years fast. Nobody needs a billion to live a very, very luxurious life. There are a lot of problems that could be addressed if a bunch of that idle, accumulated wealth were actually working for everybody’s benefit.
I do, however, have lots of other complaints about St. Bernie. I’ve been leaning Warrenward pretty much since the start - I believe she gives a genuine shit about poor people and, unlike bernie, has a clue about how to get things done. But if bernie gets the nomination, of course I will vote for him.

Exactly. (As a born and raised Masshole, I have always had a bit of a grudge about people who move to NH for the low taxes, but commute to a job in MA)

My guess is he’s been on their shitlist ever since losing to Obama but voting to remove Trump really amplified it. The modern conservative movement has one litmus test, how one feels about Trump.

If you commute to MA for work you end up paying both MA income tax and NH property tax so all you are really avoiding is sales tax. And MA candidates have historically done quite well in NH. Dukakis, Kerry, Tsongas, Romney all won NH.

That’s been my worry from the get go. I can’t see him willing to share a stage with other candidates. Building up a strong legislative majority is never part of his stump. And for someone who runs on an ambitious platform, that stumps me. I really worry about how effective he’d be. Yeah some of the stuff is too radical but some of it needs to be done. Sanders has never struck me as someone who understands the legislative branch’s co role in implementing positive change.

Well, from what I can find, the last time he spoke was 2013—don’t see him listed as a speaker on any CPACs since then.

The Utah senator appears to have last spoken at the event in 2013, in the wake of his failed presidential run. esquire.com

“He said he was going to be an extreme conservative, that he was the most conservative guy in the world, and when he came to CPAC, after 2012, he doesn’t want to have anything to do with us,” Schlapp said. Romney did return to CPAC in 2013 to give a speech…Romney has not attended the annual event since. washingtonpost.com

Some Germans who DID know what was going on at the time called themselves White Rose —which might be loosely translated as Snowflake.
