Historically, if you’re under 25, you’re less likely to vote than any other demographic group. Older folks are the most likely to vote. Sanders might capture more of that young vote, but if they’re not turning out in numbers, it doesn’t matter. He wont win.

We know that everyone else is splitting the moderate vote - and that a majority of Democrats are voting for someone other than Bernie. They haven’t coalesced around a single candidate, and in a straight up 1-1 fight, I think Bernie loses handily against whoever it is.

And then Bernie will do what he did in 2016 and screw over rank and file Democrats and throw a hissy fit.

Jim Bakker, resurrected preacher, pseudoscientist, hawker of snake oil, and all around money grubbing shitbag, claims his colloidal silver solution cures everything. Just skimmed past a Facebook video today that said Bakker claimed his magic silver solution would cure the coronavirus. He already claims it cures venereal disease.

This is where all the circles meet in the middle; people dumb enough to believe him include the anti-vax community, how enough vitamin C cures everything, “Cures ‘They’ Don’t Want You To Know,” everything can be cleaned with white vinegar and baking soda, every word of the Bible is true, hurricanes are caused by gay marriage, random Caps users, and Trump voters.

In other news, the agreement between The University of North Carolina and the Sons of Confederate Veterans over yje dispisition of “Silent Sam” has been voided for lack of standing.

A judge has overturned a contentious settlement that the University of North Carolina system reached with the Sons of Confederate Veterans over the Confederate monument known as Silent Sam.

The November 2019 agreement required the UNC system to give Silent Sam to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, along with $2.5 million for its preservation and display. It was announced within minutes of a lawsuit filed by the group.

npr.org

For those of you into serious amounts of detail and crazy, attorney T. Greg Doucette was in the courtroom and gives a running recount of the hearing. Apparently the judge was up to his eyeballs in this and the result was unexpected. The whole thread is worth a read.

The bill says Trump has to remove any troops from military actions against Iran within 30 days unless he gets Congressional approval. Really, it’s just a further restriction on the War Powers Resolution, which would give Trump 60 days to tear ass before the 30 day retreat period kicks in.

So let me see if I’ve got this straight: The 4 lawyers assigned to prosecute this case filed a sentencing recommendation with the court that was double what the “guidelines” say they should be, the DOJ only discovered this after Trump railed against it on Twitter, and they stepped in to “correct” the filing without noting at any time that the original filing had been in excess of DOJ “guidelines.”

Wouldn’t it have saved everybody’s time had Barr just let things play out, then made up some BS to justify a Trump pardon instead?

What do you know.

Sorry I can’t do more, one meeting to another today… But read this.

apple.news

President Donald Trump has defanged Congress’ oversight authority. That became clear when the Senate acquitted the president of obstruction. But one conservative judge isn’t willing to let the executive branch steal power from his branch of government.

In a jaw-dropping opinion issued by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago on January 23, Judge Frank Easterbrook—a longtime speaker for the conservative Federalist Society and someone whom the late Justice Antonin Scalia favored to replace him on the U.S. Supreme Court—rebuked Attorney General William Barr for declaring in a letter that the court’s decision in an immigration case was “incorrect” and thus dispensable. Barr’s letter was used as justification by the Board of Immigration Appeals (the federal agency that applies immigration laws) to ignore the court’s ruling not to deport a man who had applied for a visa to remain in the country.

In retrospect, it’s obvious that all those who insisted that a Trump presidency was not something to worry about thought that it would be just another Dubya presidency. That Pence would exert some measure of control over Trump’s hiring decisions and stock the place with the same sort of political yes-men that Dubya had surrounded himself with. That Trump would defer to Pence whenever it came down to making decisions with political consequences as Dubya had done with Cheney, with Congressional Repubs working closely with Pence to be on the same page.

We are seeing proof now that there were no ‘good Germans’ back in the day who had innocent reasons for supporting Nazis. There are no surprises with thugs like Trump and Hitler — it’s always clear what they are. So supporters of either can be fairly charged with supporting everything the respective regimes could reasonably be expected to do.

The Tennessee senator did more than just block some election-security bills on Tuesday.

Not only did she block more than one election security bill, saying that Democrats just want fodder for fundraising efforts, she filed a bill “directing the government accountability office to look into the debacle in Iowa.” Wow, what a tool.

Charlie Pierce on Never Trumpers: The Never Trumpers are attempting to get involved in the vital work of slaying the monster they all spent 40 years creating.

What Kristol is doing here is merely a less crude form of what the president* told his audience to do the other night. I don’t want that Republican determining the Democratic nominee any more than I want Kristol doing so. If the latter wants to hustle up independents in November to support the Democratic nominee—WHOEVER THAT IS—he’s more than welcome, even though, as far as I’m concerned, Bill Kristol hasn’t cleaned enough bedpans at Walter Reed to atone for his activities in the Aughts. Nevertheless, any ally in the run-up to this election was worth having. But now the election’s here, and I don’t want this guy anywhere close to picking the nominee of a party he spent his entire career denigrating and ridiculing. That’s just crazy.

Honestly, the only real problem the US hard right has ever had with Hitler and the Nazis is that they lost in WWII. Winning isn’t everything to these power-mad freaks, it is the only thing.

And Biden wants to work with these people. Fortunately, it appears that may no longer be relevant very soon.

Disagree with him on this one point:

The GOP will never let a Democrat use the powers that Trump is now asserting with abandon. They will seek to impeach, remove, and otherwise lie to get that Democrat out of power. They will hold hearings, hold up nominations, and shut govt down to do so.

They are all or nothing - and power is the ultimate and only goal to inflict their worldview on everyone else (redistributing wealth to rich and the burdens to everyone else).

The main problem as I see it is that it only takes 30-40% of the electorate remaining consistently insane/evil/bigoted/willfully stupid to make a civil war inevitable if they persist with this nonsense long enough.

Counting conservatively, the GOP is already at 20+ years of that shit, and Trump is just the latest abominable aberration to show up as a result.

to be honest, this kind of treason, for the sake of maintaining personal power usually results in those that have continued to enforce it against the majority ending badly. Shame, compassion, logic, morality appear to have no effect on these people. Once deposed, I’m of the opinion that I would just as soon not use my tax dollars to continue to feed, house and clothe them. The question remains do we dispose of them with the same casual cruelty that they’ve shown to us, our ideals and our rights. I don’t care for the type of person that they are turning me into to even consider this but when they’ve illustrated that rules and laws are only for those that choose to abide by them, then all bets are kind of off imho. Mumford and Sons say that O Brother Where Art Thou? is the reason they paly the kind of music they do. They said prior to that movie, they’d never heard the kind of music played in the movie.

I loved folk music and bluegrass back in the day. The “Soggy Bottom Boys” cover of “Constant Sorrow” is way way better than the dreary Joan Baez version.

I am torn on this one. To repair all the damage that the GOP has done to America, it may be essential to basically castrate those fuckers, by weaponizing government to investigate & jail as many as can be rounded up before they hop on private planes to Russia.

Do we do this? Will it even be possible?

Exigent circumstances require it.
Although I do not think anything improper would have to be done - aggressively investigating all the criming, aggressively enforcing the law, and pushing for sentences at the top end of guidelines, and NO FUCKING PARDONS would be sufficient.
I agree, arrest as many of them as quickly as legally possible, but I think being tried (or at least charged) in absentia would help convince the rest of the world that we are genuinely trying to clean up our mess.
I don’t think we could do this without having all three branches, so please let us have a long-coattails nominee.

Main problem is Fox News & Hate Radio, pouring poison into the ears of millions of Americans. Without the State Propaganda Network, millions of Americans would no longer live in a delusional alternate-reality bubble.

Remove that, and the cranks will be shoved off to the fringes, where they belong, limited to shitty little websites devoid of advertising, supported only by an ever-diminishing stream Wingnut Welfare, and derided by trusted media sources.

I agree that Fox News and Hate radio have to go. But how to do that in a sharply polarized country where Republicans are acting completely in bad faith at all times and on every issue?

Enough other Republicans are complicit in Trumpco crimes and the like that there would be little observable difference between following the trail of crime wherever it leads, and a legal decapitation of the Republican party.

the easiest markets to reach:

it is far easier to register 10 new voters or get 10 dems to the polls than it is to change the mind of one Republican

The turnout in Tuesday night’s Democratic New Hampshire primary was the party’s highest ever and provided a hopeful sign to Democrats disappointed by low enthusiasm demonstrated in Iowa last week.

The roughly 291,000 votes counted as of early Wednesday afternoon outpaced the 288,672 who voted in 2008, the previous high for Democrats in the Granite State.
In contrast, the 176,574 who turned out to vote in Iowa last week was well behind 2008’s 239,872, which alarmed Democrats who believe a strong turnout will be necessary to oust President Donald Trump from the White House in November.

Well, except for the whole “FCC has the right to regulate other parts of cable, it’s just that right now there’s no legislation allowing regulation for content purposes. Which is great inasmuch as it’s allowed to throw around language and adult themes as though every hour were post-Watershed”.

I’m not sure, though, if any act passing Congress to give the FCC the right to regulate content on cable wouldn’t be abused to censor the language and the sex seen on it, so I unfortunately have to agree with you that in the current environment it’d have to remain immune to the Doctrine.

Weren’t the Soggy Bottom Boys actually Union Station, Allison Krause’s band? Jerry Douglas (I’m a Huge Fan) and all…..

Enough other Republicans are complicit in Trumpco crimes and the like that there would be little observable difference between following the trail of crime wherever it leads, and a legal decapitation of the Republican party.

The US Powers that Be would almost certainly not permit anything like that.

Sadly I can’t really argue against that position, but if get all 3 branches long enough to enact real campaign finance reform, those Powers will become less powerful.

The Rude Pundit: Trump’s Ultimate Goal: The Erasure of Barack Obama

Some Democrats are defending Obama’s legacy, like Nancy Pelosi did in her press conference after the State of the Union and, obviously, like Joe Biden is on the campaign trail. But it seems like Trump’s lies about Obama ought to be front and center, at least as a reminder that a Democratic president didn’t screw things up. In fact, the job of a Democratic president since Clinton has been to clean up the wreckage left by the Republicans.

Trump’s making a hell of a mess. Let’s not allow him to throw President Obama into the trash heap of history.

Barr is also now pretty sure he is safe. GOP Senate majority ensures that he will be untouched, the media won’t report on anything he says with sufficient seriousness (or better yet will spin it as being the Democrats trying to trap him as an election ploy), and he always has the option to say nothing or outright lie some more since no one will hold him to account anyways and he thinks Trump has his back. (Trump has no one’s back, and Barr will eventually learn that the hard way maybe.)

Can’t the FCC require that anything calling itself “news” cannot have more than x% bullshit? A “no deliberate lying” policy would ruin Fox, without having to be specifically aimed at them. It might even make a dent in hate radio.

Would the new department needed to enforce that have to include a special flying squad simply to deal with Gish Gallops?

The Mrs finds their stuff hit and miss.

I love their quirky sensibility/humor. Raising Arizona was my introduction, but found Hudsucker Proxy to be a classic and timeless critique of the business world.

Hail Caesar was interesting for their take on Hollywood, and No Country For Old Men was a modern Western/horror. And then there’s Fargo, which I find absolutely fascinating in every way.

Passionately loathed No Country for Old Men. Finally watched Fargo and thought it was similar to A Simple Plan. Well made but I have utterly no desire to ever see it again.

Because never before in world history has a man been put into power by a bunch of rubes who thought they could control him, only to discover that his newfound power means he doesn’t have to listen to them.//////

re: #210 #thegreatpoolpondconversion (dangerman)

only over the airwaves

cable makes it meaningless

Oh yeah… oops.
If I understand correctly, the FCC regulates over air broadcasting because the frequency spectrum belongs to everybody. We, through the mechanism of the federal government, allow broadcasters to use bits of that spectrum. In return, we demand that they behave.
In most places I have lived, cable options were limited (or there was only one provider for a given area.) Each cable operator needs permission from the local government to operate, and to operate with limited competition as well.
I am unilaterally declaring that that process is sufficiently analogous to the distribution of bits of the broadcast frequency spectrum as to allow for government regulation. I am also declaring that, for this specific purpose ONLY, each local government is a subset of the federal government and therefor the FCC may demand truthful news even from cable news. “Wait,” you say, “aren’t you conflating carriers/distributors with the content creators in a legally flawed manner with potential unwanted repercussions elsewhere?” Yes, yes I am. But Alan Dershowitz assures me that it is all perfectly fine, and he is famous, so there you go.

Last week I posted about a movie-goer who is also an avid birder. He complained about the plaintive call of the Loon being used in a scene in 1917because the call is a mating call performed on bodies of water (and none were near the historical site of the scene) and the Loon is not native of France. It’s a classic case of ‘who watches the watchmen’. Republicans are utterly corrupt, so they would either corrupt the FCC entirely or stop it from acting. They could also define ‘lying’ to suit their needs.

Bottom line is that government agency powerful enough to get Fox News and Hate Radio forcibly shut down is powerful enough to be a Ministry of Truth in GOP hands.

All true, but I am stipulating that at this point the GOP has gotten its just reward and is powerless.

There was one time Patrick Roy absolutely owned him. When the Avalanche were playing the Blackhawks in the Western Conference Final in 1996, Roenick got pissed off at no penalty being called on a play that would have given him a breakway on Roy (who was the Avs goalie). When told of the comment, Roy responded: “I would have stopped it anyway.” Then Roenick quipped that he wondered where Roy was in Game 3 (when Roenick had scored on him), famously suggesting he was “up in the rafters looking for his jockstrap.”

When told about this, Roy replied: “Tell Jeremy I can’t hear a word he says because I have two Championship rings plugging my ears.”

Roy and the Avalanche would go on to win the Stanley Cup again after beating the Blackhawks. Roenick never won a cup.

And even if gay people are more effeminate. So the hell what. I’m supposed to look down on Pete because he doesn’t act like a retrograde idea of masculinity? These guys really are not comfortable with their sexuality or how they present themselves. It’s why they constantly have to mock gay men as being from the most absurd anti gay caricature. I have problems with Pete but it’s got nothing to do with him being gay.

When you consider that most of these people live like soft French dukes and are built like the portrait of Dorian Gray, realize that it’s not even that they value the manly masculinity they bray about. Manliness, like whiteness, actually doesn’t have any definition, because any definition with hard boundaries would exclude them.

I mean, I’m talking a lot about the hollowing out of meaning, but: seriously, consider how little “manliness” means when it can expand to encompass these syphilitic blanchemanges and their Louis XIVth repro. And the believers are fine with it, because fuck no they’re not going to live up to any of the positive attributes of old-school manliness; they’re just willing to dabble in the concept when it gives them license to be shitty or cruel.

The slightly more nuanced version of this is how they view soldiers as “manly” because they have license to kill, but don’t like the complexity, and someetimes tragedy, of actually being a soldier. A guy who shoots because he’s having fun being cruel is their idea of what a solider is, so Gallagher is one of the good ones. Any person who’s served and come away with “that was hard, and killing is terrible, maybe we should think about how we make the call to fight very carefully” is weak.

If they were anywhere near here I’d go. Mustaine is a serious whackadoo but the music is still some of the best metal ever made. I’d just get a major kick out of hearing “Peace Sells” live, sorta like (well, no not quite) at the U2 show and 50,000 people are singing “Pride (In the name of love)”

Just discovered my phone can not access network. I last received a text on the 8th. Tells me I need to add minutes. Have over 9600 minutes and 46 days of service remaining on my phone.
Does allow me to contact cell provider customer service though. Unfortunately, in order for them to troubleshoot phone, I must contact them from a different phone. And, I have no local friends/associates to help me. Apparently they do not have a online customer service chat system set up.

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Claims President Obama Staged Recent Shooting Massacres

We’re not exactly sure what Mustaine truly means by the term, “staging,” but the Megadeth frontman is claiming that either President Obama has fabricated the incidents, or was, in fact, the mastermind behind the ATF gunwalking scandal, the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ movie theatre shooting in Colorado and the recent shooting spree at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee.

“Back in my country, my president [makes puking sign with his finger in his mouth], he’s trying to pass a gun ban, so he’s staging all of these murders,” begins Mustaine. “Like the ‘Fast And Furious’ thing down at the border; [the massacre in] Aurora, Colorado, all the people that were killed there; and now the beautiful people at the Sikh temple [near Milwaukee, Wisconsin].”

He persists, “I was talking to J.D., our promoter here tonight… What a great guy. I was saying, ‘I don’t know where I’m gonna live if America keeps going the way it’s going because it looks like it’s turning into Nazi America. And he [J.D.] said, ‘Move down here to Singapore.’”

Mr. President, a couple minor corrections: (1) I have never committed a crime, which is an important pre-req for jail in most countries, still including ours; and (2) there’s just one book, but I think there is a movie coming and I hope you get to see it.

I realize it’s just me, but whenever I see quotes/tweets from the ilk of Jennifer Rubin, Frum, Comey, et. al., I’m all “Fuck you, you frigging morons. You all helped contribute to this fucking mess.”

Comey in particular. I still convinced he October-surprised Clinton to get in Trump’s good graces in order to keep his job after the election. Like most Trump flunkies, he found out Trump is loyal to no one but himself.

re: #299 The Ghost of a Flea

ALL the updings for “syphilitic blanchemanges and their Louis XIVth repro…”

THAT’S WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO BELIEVE!!!!!!

Seriously, though, that is probably the most likely reason. It’s still infuriating because it means for all of his fucking blather about serving the country and the law, he couldn’t control his own goddamn people. Still casts him in a shitty light, particularly when you factor in him hiding the concurrent Trump investigation.

I also go back to the fact that he was a Republican Whitewater prosecutor. Given how he basically was covering for Trump while fucking over HRC, I can’t believe there wasn’t a “I finally got her” motive in there.
