Feb. 10, 2020 | Rodney Carmichael — “This is what real love sounds like.”

From any other new artist, a Tiny Desk declaration like that might sound a tad bit presumptuous if not altogether premature. But when the voice behind those words is as seasoned and vintage as Baby Rose’s, everything it utters reverberates like the gospel truth. The D.C. native — who came of age in Fayetteville, N.C. before coming into her own as an artist in Atlanta — returned to her birthplace, backed by a big band including strings, to perform songs from her 2019 LP To Myself.

Studio debuts as stunning as To Myself don’t come out every day, year or decade, for that matter. But to truly appreciate what Rose achieves on last year’s release, you have to see her perform those songs live. In an era when the over-reliance on Autotune has nearly everybody in radio R&B land sounding like automatons, her unadulterated voice is almost otherworldly. It’s confounding how a vocal tone so weathered and wise emerges from her so effortlessly. At 25, she mixes the bluesy melisma of Nina Simone and the deep register of Sarah Vaughan — two of her influences — with songwriting as devastating as her delivery.

“I would not be able to write with such emotion about these things without my fair share of regrets,” she says, introducing her song “Ragrets.” That kind of life experience seeps through in a performance plush with warmth and empathy. Dedicating the last song to herself — and “to anyone here that’s ever wanted to call or text somebody that you know you should not call or text” — Rose introduced “All To Myself” by congratulating those of us who’ve refrained from squandering our emotions on the undeserved.

Funny enough, the last voice heard in Baby Rose’s Tiny Desk belongs not to her but to her father, who arrived midway through her set before squeezing his way up to the front. “That’s my daughter!” he shouts over the applause as Rose laughs and claps for him. The love was well-deserved.

I think that if you have spent more than $50M on ads (I don’t know how much he’s actually spent, but it’s a lot), the you should be required to be on stage.

Charles Koch could do that.

“Wealthy” doesn’t seem to be a good metric to determine who should be on the Democratic stage.

Bloomberg really is a good example showing the need for publically-financed elections.

(Not the checkbox on the IRS form. Part of that goes to Republicans.)

Then he should definitely be on stage. And the other candidates will need to be ready to respond to:
Host: Mayor Bloomberg, you were a big proponent of stop and frisk as mayor. Shouldn’t people be wary of you advocating for something similar as president?
Bloomberg: Well, we have to remove Trump from office, and I’m the only one talking about that.

And when we can get there, I agree. But in 2020, we don’t have that luxury, and Bloomberg is running basically an unchallenged campaign under the Democratic banner.

Bloomberg Misleads on Stop-and-Frisk (Factcheck dot Org)

Bloomberg in hot water over ‘stop-and-frisk’ audio clip (Politico):

“Ninety-five percent of your murders — murderers and murder victims — fit one M.O. You can just take the description, Xerox it and pass it out to all the cops,” Bloomberg can be heard saying in the clip.

“They are male minorities, 16 to 25. That’s true in New York. That’s true in virtually every city,” the clip continues. “And that’s where the real crime is. You’ve got to get the guns out of the hands of the people that are getting killed.”

The clip seems to have originated from Bloomberg’s speech at an Aspen Institute event in February 2015. Later that month, The Aspen Times reported that Bloomberg’s representatives had asked the Aspen Institute not to distribute footage of his appearance.

(I can’t imagine why Bloomberg wouldn’t want that footage distributed)

Thanks, I was able to relay that to my brother, the guy who goes to both race weekends here in Phoenix. He doesn’t think Ryan Newman is going to drive after this, citing Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s concussion problems, which caused him to pull out of racing. Newman is 42, he is getting up there in driving years.

re: #345 Chrysicat

And then add to that that “open-wheel” racing is probably coming to an end due to safety concerns, and you get a situation where people will have to know minutiae to distinguish a Whatever-someone’s-willing-to-sponsor Cup car from an F1 car in another decade.

Though F1 will admittedly not insist on looking vaguely like street vehicles, you hope.

I hadn’t heard they were going to do away with open wheel cars. That would be a loss. Growing up, I loved cars like this:

Lotus 38 at Indy 1965.

Now THAT is my idea of a race car.

Not so much “do away with”, but the problem is that track debris and open cockpits, even with a halo, get people killed when the open rear wheels lob it into their helmeted cranium.

re: #314 danarchy

Um the article you linked says he isn’t ruling out a third term. Besides, I haven’t noticed any discernible change to MA politics since he took over from Deval.

He’s letting the MBTA rot. Example:
My town is served by a commuter rail line running under downtown.
Several weeks ago, an embarrassing incident: The 7:45 train to Boston had just gone into the tunnel. The locomotive died.

Dead in the tunnel for 2 hours. The passengers eventually had to walk through the tunnel to south of the downtown. (There were no disabled passengers, fortunately.) This fucked up the commute for the rest of the day. Making it even more of an embarrassment, our state rep was on the platform that day; he’s a regular commuter. (Charlie Baker, OTOH, lives on the same rail line. He has never taken the T, not even ceremonially.)

This is just the latest with regards to the T; there are many other examples.

I also shall never forget that Baker wanted to “audit” people on public assistance. We’ve long had a strong conservative-libertarian streak in my state. Romney is infamous for his “47%” speech, but it actually was first spoken by his chief-of-staff when he was governor.

(Aside: Bill Weld’s run as a libertarian in 2016, and as a Republican in 2020 is completely consistent with his politics. That’s who he was and who he his.)

Ultimately, I despise Baker because No Good Republicans. Period. Not even Weld, who was the best R in Massachusetts.

Oh no doubt.

Guth also agrees with Vander Plaats that homosexuality is a “public health risk,” and back in 2013 was just really worried that if two dudes had unprotected sex, his whole family might get the crotch crickets. Or maybe he was saying something a little bit more complicated than that, who can even say, the point is that the gays are doing “health risk” to his whole family:

“There are health risks that my family incurs because of the increase of sexually transmitted infections that this lifestyle invites,” Guth said on the Senate floor in 2013, adding that “deep loneliness … accompanies a life based on youth, beauty and sex.”

That sentence starts one way and then ends with what sounds like jealousy. Psychotherapists, have fun!

Iowa Republicans compare ‘fraudulent sexual orientation’ to domestic abuse (Cedar Rapids Gazette)

The lede: Under Senate bill, coming out as gay would be worse than leaving kids alone with a sex offender

Under the proposal, “fraudulent concealment of sexual orientation” is likened to domestic abuse. Lying about your sexuality, as determined by the state, would be considered as a key factor in custody proceedings when a marriage is dissolved.

Even within the context of the social conservative movement to impose sexual ethics with the force of government, this is a particularly troubling idea. It’s like “Minority Report” mixed with a badly distorted children’s Bible story.

Iowa’s child custody law has a strong preference for joint custody, but domestic abuse “shall outweigh consideration of any other factor” in the code. The Senate bill would put sexual orientation fraud, not marital infidelity, on the same level as abuse. Even leaving a child unsupervised with a sex offender or jeopardizing a child’s safety are not weighed as heavily.

Well, as an Eagle Scout and as a current Scouter of more than 27 years, I take a bit of umbrage with that sentiment.

Scouting can and should be a positive thing, but abuse (of any kind, not just sexual) in the program was and is abhorrent and should be treated with due respect to those affected. The Chapter 11 filing may be somewhat of a surprise to some, but it’s been telegraphed for months to the membership as an option for the BSA National Council (which is the entity that filed for bankruptcy protections, not any local councils, who are the majority of the overall organization that registers and services units and provides local program and who are legally separate and distinct entities from each other and from the National Council) to keep Scouting viable while still retaining the ability to recompense abuse victims.

Activists Work To Sink US House Bid Of Anti-LGBT Dem (Goes to Joe My God).

Opponents of a Bronx pol infamous for homophobic comments are taking the fight to his base, launching a campaign seeking to inform Christians and Spanish-speaking voters about his controversial record.

The Bronx United political action committee launched over the weekend with English- and Spanish-language videos casting Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr. as a bigot and fake Democrat as he runs for Congress.

He sits on the New York City Council; he is running for the House in NY-15. He has a primary opponent, openly gay councilmember Ritchie Torres.

As longtime readers know, I have reported hundreds of times on Ruben Diaz’ viciously anti-gay actions, which have included leading thousands of evangelicals on multiple anti-gay hate marches through the streets of New York City.

At one of those hate marches, one of Diaz’ approved speakers cited the bible verse calling for executing homosexuals. Diaz’ openly lesbian granddaughter was standing nearby at the time.

In fact, if it were up to me, I’d love to strip the overt religious references (especially in the Scout Oath and Law) and remove the prohibition on gay adults from the program, while keeping and turning up the focus to 11 on self-improvement and community service.

It’d work just fine, because it already has, for the most part: the Girl Scouts of the USA.

For what it’s worth, I’m sorry that happened to you; that in itself was as much abuse as anything the National Council’s being called to account for right now.

I wouldn’t compare my bullying over my lack of religious faith to child sex abuse.

re: #54 Targetpractice

If John Bolton has information that could destroy Donald Trump legally if not politically, then he is doing this nation a massive disservice by putting it behind a paywall and should not profit from it. It stinks of a man who sits by and watches a murderer acquitted, then comes out literally weeks later to release a “tell-all” book that says the killer confessed to him and told him where to find the murder weapon.

It’s not really behind a paywall because if the book is published, the important details would immediately appear in articles by reviewers and legitimate reporters. It would not prevent anyone from learning the truth. Bolton should have consented to testify before the House. As someone here said — in Bolton’s case, it’s not party over country, it’s money over country.

The question is: if he had testified, would that have made any difference in the outcome? The truth and details were already known. Would his confirmation of existing reports had made a difference to the Republican jurors? I suspect it’s not the Ukraine case that will cause discomfort to Republicans but other foreign policy actions that haven’t been so meticulously covered that could make a real impact.

Abuse is abuse, no matter what form it takes, because, generally speaking, it’s all about wielding power over those viewed weaker than the abuser.

And it’s still shitty that you had to deal with it.

Police: Florida Man Calls Department To Report Being Shot At By Man He Robbed, Stabbed (CBS Miami)

According to the police, Morel, 33, had met the man through a gay social app, Grindr, and knew from others that the unidentified man dealt drugs. Morel told officers that he went to the man’s apartment intending to “make some money off of him.”

Television station WPTV reports that the men got into an argument at the apartment and Morel struck the man in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. Morel then grabbed a briefcase filled with methamphetamine and struck the victim again before running out the front door, according to the police report.

The victim grabbed a knife and chased after Morel. Outside the apartment, Morel struck the victim with a bag of drugs and a gun fell out. The man dropped the knife and fell to the ground. Morel grabbed the knife and stabbed the man who had grabbed the gun, according to the police report.

No offense, but this sounds too much like wishful thinking by this point, that Bolton might be sitting on something so explosive that the publication of it could bring down the Trump admin. Haven’t we been here time and time again in the past 3 years, every new firing leading to breathless speculation that the wronged party would go out and tell all of Trump’s dirty secrets to the press or to investigators? It simply hasn’t happened, the only people willing to testify under oath have been those who had nothing to gain and everything to lose by coming forward.

At this point, the only reason I conclude for such behavior is any such revelations would only implicate them as accomplices.

THAT’S the view of Mike Berry, above, of the First Liberty Institute, who has intervened in a row concerning a 12-week seminar called ‘Lead Like Jesus’ at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island.

Last month a flyer promoting the seminar - sent out by Cmdr Richard Clay Smothers, chaplain at the station - caused widespread anger and sparked a demand by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) to investigate the ad and punish those who sent it.

Berry is now claiming that the MRFF is unfairly targeting the chaplain - and that that it’s perfectly legal to study Jesus’s leadership.

Sources: Five N. Koreans died from coronavirus infections

Daily NK sources in North Pyongan Province reported today that five people died after suffering from fevers at hospitals in Sinuiju and a nearby area, and have speculated the patients suffered from coronavirus infections.

Daily NK sources said that North Korean authorities have ordered public health officials in Sinuiju to quickly dispose of the bodies and keep the deaths secret from the public.

A North Pyongan Province source told Daily NK that one of the patients went to a hospital in Sinuiju late last month with symptoms similar to a cold and was given fever reducers and anti-biotics. The patient’s fever worsened until, finally, they died.

Daily NK sources also reported that two patients at another hospital in Sinuiju two days later were given medicine to treat their high fevers, but ultimately died. Two more patients at a hospital in Wuiju County, near Sinuiju, reportedly died in early February.

I don’t think North Korea could handle a Covid-19 outbreak by itself. Their secrecy and denial alone would doom them.

Did Neanderthals Ritually Bury Their Dead? New Evidence Found in Iraq

Argument has raged for half a century over a cache of Neanderthal remains found in a cave in Iraqi Kurdistan, and whether some or all were ritually buried. One may have even been interred with a floral wreath, its discoverer suggested decades ago. Now, fresh excavation of Shanidar Cave using modern techniques has shed fresh light on the finds from decades ago and supports the theory of Neanderthal mortuary practice, says the paper’s lead author, Emma Pomeroy of the University of Cambridge.

The paper on the latest finds, including the missing bottom half of one of the roughly ten Neanderthals found there, was reported Tuesday by Pomeroy and colleagues in the journal of Antiquity (published in partnership with Cambridge University Press).

[…]

The scientific paper is here:

New Neanderthal remains associated with the ‘flower burial’ at Shanidar CaveLink

Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan became an iconic Palaeolithic site following Ralph Solecki’s mid twentieth-century discovery of Neanderthal remains. Solecki argued that some of these individuals had died in rockfalls and—controversially—that others were interred with formal burial rites, including one with flowers. Recent excavations have revealed the articulated upper body of an adult Neanderthal located close to the ‘flower burial’ location—the first articulated Neanderthal discovered in over 25 years. Stratigraphic evidence suggests that the individual was intentionally buried. This new find offers the rare opportunity to investigate Neanderthal mortuary practices utilising modern archaeological techniques.

The practice of burying the dead is quite old. And not limited to us modern Humans.

It’s a rather telling piece of evidence, of how long humans (not just us moderns, but also Neanderthals) have ritualized death.

Our mortality is the defining event shaping our view of what to do with ourselves. We are born unaware and over time learn of our limit of existence.

It is this which drives our beliefs and actions.

And it is what makes religion so powerful.

re: #51 TedStriker

#notallScouts.

I don’t really want to do this again with the Boy Scouts. They are corrupt to the core. That does not mean there aren’t good people in them.

If you read the LA Times article liked above, they kept records on this for one hundred years. When someone came forward with knowledge of those records, they fought in court as far as they could against survivors until they could fight no more, then they declared bankruptcy to protect their assets, and rape victims now have to stand in line like any other debtor, whilst those which have not yet come forward cannot file charges until the bankruptcy period is done.

The Boy Scouts owns billions of dollars in cash and property. They are acting just like the Catholic Church. (There are good Catholics, the Catholic Church is corrupt to the core.)

Substitute any church in the sentence “the Boy Scouts are hiding their assets from rape victims and shuffled around their people for one hundred years to avoid scrutiny!” and see how it sounds.

It is bigoted to this day against the largest religious minority in the country and gets away with that under a Congressional Charter, because feckless politicians are too cowardly to rip their charter for religious bigotry.

The only good thing is their membership has been plunging for years and by itself could endanger the organisation.

The organisation needs to die. But before they do, those alive part of the coverup of child rape for one hundred years need to be sued or prosecuted.

Boy Scouts of America, hobbled by multiple sex-abuse lawsuits, files for bankruptcy protection

The Boy Scouts of America has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Facing mounting legal costs from defending itself against lawsuits alleging sexual abuse of boys, the venerable nonprofit sought Chapter 11 protection in a court filing early Tuesday.

*snip*

Michael Pfau, whose Seattle-based law firm, Pfau, Cochran, Veretis and Amala, represents close to 300 people who say they were abused as Scouts in 30-plus states, called the filing historic.

“It will be far larger in terms of the numbers of victims and far more complicated than any of the bankruptcies we’ve seen so far involving the Catholic Church,” Pfau said.

Those bankruptcies involved individual dioceses or archdioceses, Pfau said, while “this involves victims from all 50 states and several U.S. territories.”

“You’re looking at thousands of abuse survivors making claims,” he said. “This is much bigger than the bankruptcy filings involving the Catholic Church.”

*snip*

Like the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts “have a horrible, sordid history of child abuse in the ranks,” Pfau said. “They fought very, very aggressively to keep the extent of the abuse from the public. Now they’re facing a wave of legislative reform that is sweeping across the country, with states revising their statutes of limitations to allow victims to sue.”

the darkest side is that they banned open homosexuals as being counter to their values while protecting closeted pedophiles…just like the Catholic Church.

But this is what happens in any authoritarian, top-down organization where all power emanates from above and conversely, all responsibility flows there.

And convince their voters of their lies.

Sebastian Gorka appeared on FOX to say that. Is a FOX viewer going to check and see if the statement is true, or is the viewer simply going to believe his conservative pastor?

Yeah, I saw that. 12 jurors voted to convict Stone, and if they disagreed with the foreman or their votes were forced by her then they had ample opportunity to make the court aware of such. Attacking her for “bias” is especially galling when the trial transcript shows that she was asked if she could consider the case fairly despite her bias and she was allowed to stay after answering in the affirmative. The reality is the defense doesn’t have a leg to stand on here, they’re just throwing shit at the wall in order to give Donny an excuse to issue a pardon.

There are about 14 million Southern Baptists, a massive cohort. That doesn’t make it representative. And if you did a study based on that 4% of the country, it wouldn’t tell you a thing about the whole population.

If Stone’s attorneys didn’t ask about Trump or whether any juror harbored a bias against Stone, that is on them. In fact, I’d bet these hacks yelling “bias” have no idea what kind of questions were asked during voir dire. The only question, then, is if she lied about her answers and/or being able to render an impartial decision. That’s the only ground for a new trial.

I mean Donald Andrew JOHNson Trump is a sort of Jeopardy “Before and After” clue. Truth be told, I was being a smartass about how Trump has a lot in common with the two Tennessee Andrew J’s. I think the nicest thing I can say about Jackson is he wouldn’t have been a secessionist. Just like that’s the nicest I can say about Johnson but then he cared more about comforting Southern whites than the actual victims of Antebellum Southern society. Here’s an interesting history question and I know nothing about him really but what happens if Hannibal Hamlin takes Lincoln’s place when Abe gets assassinated? Or worse, what if Booth’s plan goes according to plan. I think a lot of people don’t know the full extent of the Lincoln assassination conspiracy. Originally, Grant was gonna be at Fords that night and the guy assigned to kill Johnson only missed because he got drunk and Secretary of State Seward (who btw is one of the most underrated American statesmen of that era) just barely escaped being brutally stabbed to death. I don’t think Booth was an agent of Richmond but he certainly was a political terrorist who had he succeeded would have put the Republic in danger like it had never seen before or since in terms of a succession crisis. Remember that no President had been assassinated before Lincoln. Sorry I’m rambling.

Sorry I’m rambling.

re: #61 Hecuba’s daughter

It might not have made any difference in the final outcome. But Bolton testifying before the Senate that the impeachment information was correct and that Trump and his administration were lying, and were seeking interference, and were messing with US foreign policy for their own political gain, etc etc would have made their acquittal votes much much more clearly partisan hackery and an overt miscarriage of justice.

And that I think would have resulted with at least a few more GOP Senators voting in favor of removal. Probably not 2/3, but enough to enrage Trump about McConnell at the very least.

the darkest side is that they banned open homosexuals as being counter to their values while protecting closeted pedophiles…just like the Catholic Church.

But this is what happens in any authoritarian, top-down organization where all power emanates from above and conversely, all responsibility flows there.

And various conservative Christian organizations have their own pseudo-Scouts groups gnawing away at the BSA membership from the other side. Such groups have obviously doubled down on the religious values and probably have adopted all sorts of additional claptrap as well.

Agh. I’m glad I never joined. I think it was the simple fact that I didn’t have any close friends that were cub scouts unlike my brothers.

I’m sort of curious about my family now. My mother and sister were active in Girl Scouts.
My brother was in Cub Scouts for a while, roughly the equivalent time I was in Indian Guides. And then, neither of us were while my mother and sister continued in Girl Scouts.

So, my father must have encountered something, or decided that the time investment was not worth it. It wasn’t group activities or athletics since my brother and I both did Gray-Y (YMCA sponsored) or community-sponsored athletics all the way to high school.

Kids learn to model behavior from adults. So if the behavior being presented is abusive in nature, that’s what gets impressed upon them and that’s ultimately what they learn to pass on to others. Furthermore, these kind of behavioral patterns get harder and harder to deprogram as the kid gets older. Hence once an adult, they pass the same patterns on to other kids and the cycle repeats.

I have a little nephew who is almost two and he’s in this phase where he likes to copy everything I do or say. It’s amusing at times of course but it’s also made me REALLY cognizant of my behavior because in every scenario he sees me in, including times I am angry/frustrated/stressed out, etc. I need to be making sure I’m setting a good example for him.

Clinton doesn’t get enough credit. Hell as much as he is a punchline today, Boris Yeltsin. We had some fine statesmen and women in the 90’s all around the world. The problem I think is after Communism ended, we thought it was as Francis Fukuyama said, the “End of history” but things change. It has been proven IMO that capitalism and democracy aren’t always mutually inclusive of each other which I think unfortunately changes I think a lot of the lessons of the Cold War. Democracy and human rights are what matters not a rigid economic system.

My late husband was a fanatic about studying WWI. That was certainly his sentiment — WWII arose because of unresolved issues from WWI, including the draconian financial retribution imposed on Germany by the victors. Historians use the term 100 Years’ War to describe a series of conflicts between the British and the French; WWI and WWII can be treated the same way.

Which of Hitler’s inner circle do you think would have been able to do what he did and achieve a full on dictatorship like Hitler did? If I had to guess, I would say Goering. It’s easy to laugh at the image we have of Goering, the overweight morphine addict with tons of gaudy medals but it seems to me that he was the most politically astute of Hitler’s inner circle. Himmler was an occultist weirdo and Goebells while known to be an effective speaker I can’t see being a leading political figuture.

Emphasis on vocalize.

At universities once you get into recognized student groups, sharing of student activity fees*, and so forth you get into the bugaboo about *your* money going to things you personally don’t want funded. (Wow, just like a state or federal government.)

And any normal university of any size is going to spawn some groups that will want to use said funding, or other perks of being a recognized organization, to bring in speakers that others do not want to appear on campus. At this point you get into norms and rules regarding level of protest about said speakers. (And I think there are varying opinions about how disruptive to be at the actual event in regards to the speaker.)

It truly is I feel a war of information, intelligence, and knowledge. The internet and I don’t know how you realistically change this can be used to so easily spread disinformation at a quicker rate than any propaganda before. But at the same time, the internet is so vital to our everyday life. We use it to stay in touch with family and friends, we use it to apply for jobs, order goods, etc. I’ve been in some form of social media since I was about 12-13 years old when I got an old AOL Instant Messager Account that I would use to communicate with my friends. I suppose that depends on whether you consider Aaron Burr’s illegal duel with Alexander Hamilton an assassination or not.

Hamilton was the former Secretary of Treasury. Burr killing him would be if Pence killed Tim Geithner in a dual. Read about the entire Lincoln assassination plot. It was a tragic event for our country as was but man it could have been so much worse.

Now that one from the story I read on it, you could actually claim legitimate mental illness since Richard Lawrence, the attempted assassin thought AJ killed his father. I believe the older Lawrence had died of sickness in England years before. A lot of people had legitimate reasons for wanting Andrew Jackson dead but Richard Lawrence wasn’t one of them. The Lincoln plot was this originally: Kill Lincoln and Grant (Grant’s wife backed out of Fords at the last minute since she did not like Mary Lincoln, kill Andrew Johnson, and kill William Seward. If that succeeds. That’s the top general in the Union Army, Vice President, President, and Secretary of State dead. And it’s a crisis. Yes Lee had surrendered by then but hostilities didn’t really end until May- en.wikipedia.org, en.wikipedia.org

The state lotteries are great educational tools. By which I don’t mean the revenue generated that is then sent to the various state education funds - the amount sent is only a small fraction of the actual education budgets - but rather that the process and math involved are fascinating and important to understand, if one is to really get a feel for how the universe works.

The anatomy of a smear, Judd Legum, popular.info

Republicans are pushing a smear against Hillary O’Connor Mueri, who is running for Congress in Ohio. They filed a complaint with the Ohio AG, saying she voted in 2008 in the primaries in both OH and CA (where she was living). Turns out she didn’t (surprise!), and that no one had asked the election board where she was supposed to have voted illegally if she had. Didn’t stop the OH Secretary of State, the OH Republican Party, and then national media from pushing the story. It took less than a day for Mueri’s campaign manager to contact the election board and find it was a false story. Local media has updated the story, but the Republicans are standing by the smear. And National media (politico and townhall) have not updated. Mueri’s opponent has righteously refused to comment, bless his heart.

The attack against Mueri is part of a broader effort — in Ohio and across the country — to weaponize small discrepancies across millions of voters registration records to justify voter registration purges and restrictions on voting access. …

In September, LaRose’s office was poised to purge 235,000 names from its voter rolls. Ohio has a “use it or lose it” registration system, meaning that people who don’t vote for several elections are removed from the rolls.

But a man in Ohio, Steve Tingley-Hock, “developed a hobby of spending his weekends downloading the state’s voter data onto his own laptop where he manages a database that keeps track of every voter in Ohio.”

He checked the state list against his database and found that the state’s list was riddled with errors. More than 40,000 people were incorrectly labeled as inactive voters despite voting in a recent election. About half of the voters improperly marked as inactive were located “in Franklin County, a Democratic stronghold in the state.”

And a lot depends on your cell company.

I had Verizon and my cell reception was good in Philadelphia. I even had 2-3 bars out in the woods north of Cresson when deer hunting. (Helped that you could climb up a hill a bit, get line of sight to a cell tower, and have 5 bars.) Visiting my brother-in-law in Colorado there was zero reception at the house (right up against a hillside in a river valley), but could get 2 bars by going outside and climbing the river bluff for a hundred yards.)

As a comparison a co-worker in Center City Philadelphia had Sprint and had zero reception in our office unless he stood in a certain 4’x4’ spot in our set of cubicles in which he’d get 2 bars. Outside the building his reception was pretty good.

Candace Owens doesn’t believe in racism. She has testified as much before an astounded Congress that just wanted her to hurry up and deliver them the pizza they ordered. She does however believe in the imaginary form of racism practiced by liberals who try to pass anti-discrimination laws.

During an appearance Monday on Laura Ingraham’s white power hour, Owens defended Mike Bloomberg from accusations of racism. You’d think Bloomberg has enough money to prevent Owens from “helping” him or even saying his name out loud. Owens argued that Bloomberg isn’t racist. No, the “best” racist on the Left is Bernie Sanders … because of socialism?

OWENS: [Sanders] pretends to be their friend. He lies to black America’s face when he knows that he’s going to be the one like Lyndon Baines Johnson. He’s Lyndon Baines Johnson 2.0 who is going to enact policies that are going to harm black America for the next 100 years.

Like every other Republican, Candace is actively working to get Bernie the nomination because of her deeply held belief (probably accurate) that Bernie would be the easiest candidate for Trump to defeat. I am officially very excited! I’ve wanted to see Gordon Lightfoot for decades. I mean, the man is a fucking Canadian legend so of course, right?

Anyway, I figured he never really toured this far south and he’s getting up there in age so I’d lost my chance. Then about six weeks ago I pass a billboard on the interstate advertising him coming to one of the Casinos in town. What?….Score!

Unfortunately, cash was tight at that moment and by the time I was finally able to purchase a ticket, they were sold out. :( And what really sucked is I had checked two days before the money cleared and there were still a few available.

Of course, the guy is 81 now so I was really worried I’d blown my last best chance to see him. Well, on a whim I checked Ticketmaster this morning and what do you know? A very reasonably priced ticket was staring right back at me! I snatched that sucker up in no time flat and the best part is it will actually get me a better view than the ticket I was looking at previously!

My guess would be the former. He’d been living in cities most of his life (Boston and Philadelphia). He’d worked with central governments to do things for the benefit of colonies like organizing transportation for military campaigns and forming militias.

And while he had own slaves initially, he became an abolitionist after realizing his were trying to teach themselves to read.

You were correct, but it wasn’t Parkinsons. From Wikipedia:

On September 14, 2006, while in the middle of a performance, Lightfoot suffered a minor stroke that eventually left him without the use of the middle and ring fingers on his right hand. He returned to performing nine days later and for a brief time used a substitute guitarist for more difficult guitar work.Full recovery took longer, “I fought my way back in seven or eight months”.In 2007, Lightfoot had full use of his right hand and played all of the guitar parts in concert as he originally wrote them. He continues to perform.

While a tour was being planned for 2008, Lightfoot’s manager, Barry Harvey, died at age 56 on December 4, 2007. In late 2009, Lightfoot undertook a 26-city tour.

Trump forces out another person who validated the whistleblower’s complaint!

The intelligence community lawyer who played an integral role in the start of the impeachment probe of President Donald Trump is resigning next month.

Jason Klitenic, general counsel at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), will serve his last day in that role on March 2, an ODNI spokesperson confirmed to TPM Tuesday.

Asked if Klitenic was asked to resign or if he was doing so on his own accord, the spokesperson said, “He wanted to return to the private sector.” Politico first reported Klitenic’s resignation Tuesday.

The attorney made national headlines last year for his letters justifying his boss’s decision not to share the now well-known whistleblower’s complaint about President Donald Trump with Congress.

By the time the primaries get here to Nebraska, most of the Democratic field will be gone and there should be a clear front-runner in May.

It seems to me strategic voting in the primary is the way I should go, regardless of my preferred choice amongst those who remain: Vote for the candidate who is ahead, to pile on more votes and try to prevent splitting (and worse, a brokered convention).

Rudy’s buddy Kerik. Former NYC police commissioner who got into trouble when he used public funds to do his personal home renovations (among other things).

He was up for a DHS slot under Bush but admitted to hiring an undocumented nanny. Shortly after, a full investigation was launched and ultimately entered a plea deal on eight federal charges, including tax fraud and false statements.

He belonged in prison. He did the crimes and worse - a plea deal means prosecutors could have sought more, and Kerik’s own lawyers knew that and wanted to limit the risk to their client.

He admitted to doing the crimes.

So of course Trump is rooting out the corruption. He thinks blotting out any convictions under Comey will clear corruption?

It’ll have the opposite effect.

Trump’s pardoning a who’s who of 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s corrupt-o-crats.

The common theme: if you engaged in corruption while in government, or personally benefited from screwing everyone else to get ahead, or engaged in bribery, extortion, etc., you’re getting a pass from Trump.

He’s never met a corrupt practice he couldn’t get behind - unless he wants to smear a Democrat over doing that very thing (Biden).

The GOP were ready to impeach Hillary over Bill meeting with Obama AG on the tarmac for a couple minutes.

But they’re perfectly fine with Trump shredding the Constitution and wiping his ass with the rule of law to help Trump’s cronies avoid consequences of their criminal acts done on behalf of… *checks notes* Trump.

When you’re that close in beliefs, it’s understandable, and not any different than any other election.

I’m old enough to remember that Obama being from the same city as Blago meant he was complicit in Blago’s corruption. Now Trump gives him clemency.

The fact that Blagojevich is (was) a Democrat speaks volumes about how corruption makes strange bedfellows…

Breaking: Dave Daubenmire has shaved his beard. He’s also still going on about the Super Bowl halftime show, linking it to soft porn, demonic viruses, and a portal to Hell, and attacks Kyle of UT and Right Wing Watch in the video.

(Goes to Utah Outcasts, 9:19, caution for coarse language)

Daubenmire has several hundred thousand followers, though probably quite a few are atheistic hate-followers looking for content about Christianity.

Coach Dave is STILL Talking About The Super Bowl Halftime Show

Blago is a relic of the Daley Machine. No surprise at all here. Obama was someone who came to Chicago when Harold Washington was mayor and Michelle grew up experiencing the Daley machine since her father was a precinct captain. Both of them talked a lot about his mayoralty and its impact on them.

Conservative originalists: Whar in Constitution is “President is top law enforcement officer?”

Last I heard that was the job of the head of the FBI.

The FBI isn’t in the constitution.

J Edgar Hoover was the first head of the FBI; it was founded as an offshoot of anti-anarchist efforts of the early 20th century. (to be fair, the anarchists of that time really were super-dangerous — they set off bombs on Wall Street, at the Los Angeles Times, and bunch of other places. Killed bunches of people (but not their primary original target, JP Morgan; he was late to work that day and they missed him by 15 minutes).

YouTube is showered with Bloomberg adverts. They are crowding out the Epoch Times adverts.

If I ever decide to go to the Dems primary here, I sure as hell going to vote against Bloomberg, if only because of his carpet bombing ad campaign.

When really trying to waste time, I wander over to george martin’s notablog site — but for some reason it currently wont allow access because: “Your connection is not private”. Never happened before. Wonder what’s going on.

The problem is that you’re going to https:// instead of http://. Sometimes just taking out the s fixes it, sometimes you have to type www.[website] instead.

I’m beginning to think that when my wife and I take our trip to Germany in May for a conference/meet-and-greet, I should ask the Swiss organiser (who has a soft spot for the two of us) if he can sponsor us for asylum in Switzerland.

The Swiss are very, very particular about who they will accept as immigrants. Ask any Holocaust refugee with a Swiss bank account. (You can’t because they are all dead & the Swiss confiscated their money because the surviving heirs couldn’t produce official death certificates)

from Patrick Fitzgerald’s wiki:

For more than a decade, until June 30, 2012, Fitzgerald was the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Prior to his appointment, he served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1988 to 2001, and as Chief of the Organized Crime-Terrorism Unit since December 1995, where he participated in the prosecution of United States v. Usama Bin Laden, et al., United States v. Abdel Rahman, et al., and United States v. Ramzi Yousef Rahman, et al.

As special counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Special Counsel, Fitzgerald was the federal prosecutor in charge of the investigation of the Valerie Plame Affair, which led to the prosecution and conviction in 2007 of Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff Scooter Libby for perjury.

As a federal prosecutor, he led a number of high-profile investigations, including ones that led to convictions of Illinois Governors Rod Blagojevich and George Ryan, media mogul Conrad Black, several aides to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley in the Hired Truck Program, and Chicago detective and torturer Jon Burge.
