In Which Donald Trump Goes on a Pardoning Spree

Politics • Views: 21,135

Our impeached president went on quite a pardoning spree today, commuting sentences and pardoning some really bad people, including Bernard Kerik (convicted of accepting large bribes, among other crimes), ex-San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. (convicted in a gambling fraud scandal), Michael Milken (convicted of a number of securities frauds), and last but not least, disgraced former governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevitch — convicted of attempting to sell the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, and also of attempting to extort a campaign contribution by withholding state funds from Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital.

That’s right, Donald Trump commuted the sentence of someone who threatened to harm sick children.

And today Trump told reporters that he doesn’t really know Rod Blagojevitch (even though Blagojevitch was a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice), but he was moved to pardon him after seeing his wife on… you guessed it, Fox News.

Make no mistake — today was Donald Trump’s middle finger to the justice system of the United States. We apparently have a king now.

Here’s the full extent of Trump’s FU to the justice system.

Usually, the first king is bloodthirsty, but establishes the nation. The next one is the enlighten ones, and then comes the Caligulas. We jumped straight to the insane Caligula.

I keep seeing pundits saying Trump is betraying his promise to “Drain The Swamp”, but by now it should be abundantly clear that “The Swamp” does not refer to corruption in politics (because Trump abso-fucking-lutely EMBODIES corruption in politics), but rather to anyone in government in any capacity who might stop or even inhibit Trump’s policies in any way.

Thus, Vindman, Yovanovitch etc. standing up for the rule of law in the face of Trump’s abuse of power to convert the government of Ukraine into an arm of his reelection effort are “corrupt”, “traitors”, “the kind of people we elected Trump to get rid of”, while Bernie Kerik, who was convicted of the sleaziest of crooked cop dealings, is a hero.

This. See also “Deep State.” People like Hill, Yovanvoitch, Vindman, & others are transparent. Trumps appointees meanwhile avoid the press and Congress when they’re not belittling them.

This. It’s like the continued tweeting about the Stone case despite Barr publicly saying it’s not helpful - it’s an assertion of power and his absolute eagerness to abuse it. Like I said yesterday, for a narcissist like Trump there’s very little point in abusing power if people don’t SEE HIM abusing power with impunity.

Bernie Madoff wasn’t given a commutation?

Anymouse 🌹🎃  Feb 18, 2020 • 11:45:32am

Governor Pete Ricketts (R-NE) bullshitting in a press release about guns in opposition to a Red Flag bill before the Unicameral. (That bill prompted my county commission to be the first in the state to declare the county a “Second Amendment Sanctuary.”)

Protecting the Right to Bear Arms (goes to the Nebraska Governor’s Office)

In addition to protecting the right to bear arms for self-defense, we have worked to position Nebraska as an ideal destination for hunting, offering some of the best turkey and pheasant hunting in the country. Nebraskans shoot clay for recreation. Ranchers across the state carry firearms to protect livestock from predators and to ward off pests that can devastate pastures. Nebraskans also hunt wild game to put food on the table. For these reasons, gun ownership isn’t just an abstract right in our state. It’s a practical, well-established part of everyday life for tens of thousands of Nebraskans.

Red Flag laws don’t affect hunting in Nebraska, unless the hunter is a domestic abuser.

Get a load of this fearmongering:

As the tragic rise of knife attacks and fatal stabbings in the United Kingdom, Japan, and other countries demonstrate, violence is not due to guns. As a society, we together must confront the root causes of violence, one of which is substance abuse.

Looking forward to your knife control and substance abuse legislation, Governor. Oh wait, you don’t care about that. You care about my state senator’s bill to try to turn us into Kansas on steroids and completely gut the tax base of the state.

One [Million] Mom[s] is back in the news with outrage, this time against Disney for allegedly promoting “secularism” and demons in a show called “The Owl House” on account Christians believe demons are real.

OMM has to keep up Christian outrage so Christians will continue voting for Republican tax cuts to billionaires and corporations. There’s nothing like fear of Hell to keep a Christian in line to vote for conservatives.

They also need to stay in the media spotlight so they can get coverage to promote those Republicans and tax cuts.

Hence, all the poutrage from them over the last couple of months to keep Christians terrified of the world: Boycotts against Burger King [the Impossible Whopper], Hallmark Channel [a wedding commercial in a movie with lesbians], Hotels dot com [a commercial that used the word “condom”], the movie “Toy Story 4” [alleged lesbian toy], Cottonelle flushable wipes commercial [featured a geyh couple], and Highlights Magazine [article about same-sex families and “leftist propaganda”].

I am so glad I am not a Christian. I couldn’t live in such fear every day.

Also not my experience when I was voted out of office for the crime of being an atheist in favour of a write-in Nazi candidate, or being disowned by my family because atheism might rub off on them or something.

Too bad they don’t get active in calling out the others. Leading a quiet life is sort of being like a radical centrist: By ignoring what is done in their name, they give silent assent to it.

Do you really think most “silent Christians” would give a crap if the country ran off Muslims, Hindus, atheists, &c, or would they only give a crap when the loud Evangelical portion of Christianity comes after them for not being sufficiently pure?

That’s good your father does that.

Maybe complaining will go outside this blog. As I note when I engage in counter-apologetics, I’m not trying to convince the apologist. I know I can’t do that, because evidence will not sway him.

I am trying to convince those who read and never comment. Those are the people who are reachable.

Christianity today is mostly tame because of the Enlightenment and secular governance, not because of anything they did. Martin Luther’s reformation touched off thirty years of warfare between different sects of Christianity, each with the “right” interpretation of the Bible, leading directly to our First Amendment separation of Church and State.

Churches are working hard to tear out that from the Constitution now; they need to get back to the killing and oppression.

The most open and welcoming church I know of (the Metropolitan Community Church) is not permitted to be a member of the World Council of Churches because they welcome Teh Geyh.

The United Methodist and Episcopal churches (normally considered pretty mild) are tearing themselves apart over Teh Geyh (leading to a lot of younger people emptying the pews).

The Catholic Church is still busy fighting tooth-and-nail to prevent secular prosecutors and their own parishioners from revealing the coverup of child rape.

We’ve seen this kind of White House influence on the Justice Department virtually in every Justice Department. The difference this president is much more overt about it, he tweets about it. President Obama whispered to the Justice Department about it.

The problem isn’t that Christians don’t call out others. The issue is that it isn’t considered newsworthy and so is rarely reported by the media. I’ve discussed this with numerous high ranking clergy and they say no one is interested in publicizing the pushback.

Solid, sensible pushback won’t receive much (or any) media coverage because it isn’t ‘entertaining’.

What would be entertaining is if a fire-breathing preacher were to give the Prosperity Gospel the “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” treatment by surprise at the Southern Baptist annual convention (or other high-profile assembly of these heretics). But that will not happen because such meetings are ruled with an iron fist by the Religious Right powers that be.

re: #152 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

It’s a list of people who do crimes that aren’t crimes because Trump either does them or wants to do them.

But go deeper and say that what we’re looking at is how hierarchy and license work in the mind of Trump and Trumpists. Corruption and fraud aren’t “real” crimes when they target people on the lower tiers of the hierarchy, and people that get unequivocally caught can be forgiven if they perform the right kind of deference to the people at the very top. But people on the lower tiers deserve harshness, and will only occasionally get mercy strictly at the whim of the people at the top.

As I’ve been saying all along, this is about a worldview in which supposedly universal values always include a calculation about power and affiliation first. This is present in the bones of “conservatism” because conservatism emanates from a justification of monarchy, but with several centuries of patina, the idea that some people are inherently deserving has several vectors, and “conservative” politics has slowly been syncretizing those different visions of societal caste. What they all have in common is the belief in their own exceptionality, such that they will make laws with the understanding that they will not follow them, and uplift values they do not live.

I wonder how they deal with the food and garbage form the rooms. The virus is probably spreading through the common ducting for the air conditioning system on the boat the boat.

88 new infected cases with COVID19 at the Diamond Princess cruise ship were confirmed on Wednesday. 65 of them have no symptoms. A total of 542 infected people have been confirmed contracting coronavirus on the ship: Yomiuri Shimbun.

My go-to coronavirus site for the past couple weeksyesterday added “Diamond Princess” to its list of “countries” that have experienced infections, and retitled the “country” classification as “country, other”. — which makes sense since this is the largest outbreak outside of China and it cannot be tied to a country. Given the number of people infected and the daily increase, the plague ship is clearly circulating the disease among those who are uninfected; it would not be surprising if everyone on board eventually contracts the disease if staff and passengers remain confined there. The experts need to develop a different approach to handling communicable diseases, other than confinement on a vessel that is not equipped to handle a quarantine.

Still only 5 deaths among the 1000 cases outside of China — but will have to wait a couple weeks to how this progresses.

I wonder how they deal with the food and garbage form the rooms. The virus is probably spreading through the common ducting for the air conditioning system on the boat the boat.

It’s been explained at great length that there is no sharing of air in the passenger cabins. (Common areas, yes.) We’re still within the initial quarantine period, too.

Normally these sorts of pardons happen after the election, particularly if the incumbent loses… or by a termed out president after his successor has been chosen.

I wonder if Trump, deep down, knows that he’s going to lose and lose by a large margin in November… so he’s doing this shit now. Or is it just that getting by on a purely partisan impeachment acquittal, he knows he’s untouchable and doesn’t give a fuck?

Maybe a bit of both?

re: #181 Hecuba’s daughter

Public health officials are being pretty candid about the failure of the quarantine on the Diamond Princess. Having the crew distribute prepared meals was one likely vector. Also, letting the interior cabin residents walk out onto the deck for 90 minutes a day was understandable but couldn’t have helped.

How else were they going to handle meal distribution? It’s a disaster — only alleviated by the fact that this is not the big one for communicable diseases. They better figure out what to do so that they can handle the big one when it arrives — when mortality is 20+% instead of the less than 2% that this one appears to be.

And of course, there is always the original nonfiction Hot Zone book which dealt with an Ebola type airborne disease that was 100% fatal among the monkey population at a facility in Reston. Fortunately, this one had virtually no effect on humans. But a slightly different strain next time?

Exactly. What Trump gets out of the presidency is the ability to wield enormous power at will. So just doing the usual Republican corruption in secret doesn’t get his juices flowing. He’s a raging malignant narcissist who gets off on doing his corruption openly, where all the world can see it and has to put up with it.

What this means, of course, is that it’s not a question of if the nuclear launch codes have had to be physically yanked out of his tiny grubby hands.

The question is how many times the nuclear launch codes have had to be physically yanked out of his tiny grubby hands?

It’s that, because he’s a narcissist.

It’s also about experimenting with further breaking a system that limits his power and the power of his flunkies, goons, and “peers.” Every single time there’s a chance to break a norm, to demonstrate that the rules don’t really apply, it’s confirmation that they, as violators, are a superior kind of person, and anybody trying to impose a limit is an inferior. And part of the experiment is to see who balks at the new transgression, who goes quiet, and who invents justifications (destroying the norm by changing its definition)…a test, but also a way of cataloging who deserves revenge.

He, and people like him/with him, want a specific kind of “loyalty” that includes no doubt, no questioning, and absolutely no imposition of external standards of conduct…but at the same time, those not in the loop must give compliance and deference to the whims of those in the loop. When you look at the group Trump does well with, this is what they all want: it manifests in their religion, their understanding of money, their understanding of race and gender, et cetera.

Like most presidential powers, it’s “unlimited” in the sense that there’s rarely any congressional push back. But, like the impeachment case, if he’s issuing pardons for corrupt purposes - because people are bribing him or because he wants to protect his cronies/himself - then it is an abuse of office/power. And, if we had a functioning Congress, would be grounds for impeachment and removal.

According to wikipedia, there’s 53 members of the House who are not Christian. In the Senate, there are 14 members who aren’t Christians.

Those are definitely not representative numbers of the general population. But when you’re dealing with 535 people representing 325 million people and bound by generally illogical and random boundaries, it’s hard to be perfectly representative.

The Ghost of a Flea  Feb 18, 2020 • 4:08:26pm

In the current context, the word “Christian” doesn’t mean anything. I mean, that’s the entire trick: a kind of motte and bailey where you say the word “Christian” and pretend you reflect the vast majority of the population when you need the legitimacy of numbers, but when in comes down what you actually defend and put effort into, “Christians” are just the very powerful, very wealthy church leaders of a denominational slice that (coincidentally) believes that its very powerful, very wealthy church leaders have an exclusive power to re-interpret the message of the New Testament and Christ.

Most “Christian” PACs are social conservatives relying on a very specific reading…or absence of of reading…of scripture, and the bad faith readings are getting more and more elaborate, because they have (bad, immoral) behavior that needs justifying by a unquestionable authority. Hence Osteen-y/Paula White “Christianity” in which spirituality reflects the need for justification of the actions of the wealthy in a late capitalist system. When they assert more “Christians” or “Christian values” they mean “our values, which are not values but prioritization of our material wants to the detriment of others.” They are proposing a national theology: here is legitimate Christianity, which is entitled to discriminate, here there are many less-legitimate Christianity, which cannot protest that discrimination’s grant of state power.

The scale of the bad faith has to be centered in the conversation.

Yeah, but it’s definitely a thing that assholes specifically attempt to co-opt social systems so that their asshole behavior is virtuous…and if it is behavior that is so outre it cannot be cast as virtuous, that there is a tidy system of minimization and forgiveness available exclusively to assholes.

And that’s where we are with politicized, right-wing Christianity. I’m saying that the executive power of the federal government is vested in the president. Cabinet and other political appointees serve at the pleasure of the president because they are exercising delegated presidential authority.

We have many traditions that have developed that limit the president’s powers beyond impeachment. But those traditions have failed - for example, Andrew Jackson ignoring a Supreme Court ruling, or Abraham Lincoln suspending habeaus corpus, or most all of Trump’s actions. Most of those traditions and boundaries are based on the president being a moral person who is able/willing to put the interests of the nation above his own.

If Congress is unwilling/unable to remove a president who exceeds those bounds, then we are sort of completely fucked.

Both-sides reporting intrinsically favors liars/Republicans. They can bang out their bulkshit at lighting speed, unconstrained by frivolous details such as reality, ethics etc.

Meanwhile, any reality-based public policy making is damn hard work with no easy solutions. Anyone who goes in front of the media talking about that will need to have serious skills to avoid looking weak/indecisive compared to the slick liars with their talking points.

Naturally it doesn’t help when the both-sides media treats everything from Democrats with harsh skepticism while reserving at least half the nation’s supply of drooling credulity for anything put out by Republicans.

I’m of the opinion that anytime you gather together more than maybe a dozen humans under any circumstances for any reason, you’re going to find at least one asshole. The bigger the group, the more there are. It’s up to the non assholes to minimize the assholes. It’s difficult but not impossible. What we see around us today is unchecked assholery and it spreads. Like any other disease.

The Republicans Are All Michael Dukakis Now
They let Trump off the hook. Now, they’re saddled with the consequences of everything else he does. Martin Longman, Washington Monthly

…Trump’s congressional allies have always been reluctant to criticize him, but now every criticism is an indictment of their own conduct in allowing him to remain president. And that creates a kind of “fealty.”

Michael Dukakis discovered something similar. The Republicans successfully argued that, having let Willie Horton go, Dukakis was responsible for whatever Horton did thereafter….

re: #317 KGxvi

One quibble — the President can’t suspend habeas corpus, “unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.” There was a rebellion in process when Lincoln suspended it.

That is a theme that is rampant among Christian nationalists (or nostalgia voters). The myth about an America they want to “redeem” is grounded in the idea that liberals corrupted everything in the 60s and early 70s. It was the basis of Barr’s claims during his speech at Notre Dame, where he postulated that all of the evils of society are the result of a “holy war” waged by progressives.

The answer to that threat, according to the attorney general, is to empower an authoritarian president, who is above the law, as a way to re-establish order. In Donald Trump, Barr has found just the kind of leader to do that. So he doesn’t need anyone to bully him about how to defend the president and persecute his enemies. Doing so is what animates this attorney general and his un-American tendencies.

“SACRAMENTO — California lawmakers continued the state’s expansion of rights and protections this year for immigrants who enter the country illegally, with laws signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom allowing them to serve on government boards and commissions and banning arrests for immigration violations in courthouses across the state.

The efforts by Newsom and Democrats in the California Legislature to provide refuge to immigrants stand in sharp contrast to the policies of President Trump, who continues to push for a new wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and also crack down on asylum seekers.”

But that is in Article 1. Can the President legally suspend it, unilaterally? If so, couldn’t Trump claim that it must be suspended to protect against the ongoing invasion from the south?

A FB friend who lives in Texas posted this totally false meme that
“The total number of Americans killed in mass shootings in 2018 = 194
The total number of Americans killed by illegal immigrants in 2018 - 10,150”

Except that is in Article I which lays out legislative powers.

Article II which lays out executive powers never mentions habeas corpus.

And I believe the Chief Justice at the time ruled Lincoln didn’t have that authority, which Lincoln thoroughly ignored. Lincoln did what he felt he had to in extraordinary circumstances, but it doesn’t mean he didn’t overstep.

Reading [Katherine] Stewart’s book is certainly enlightening, but it can also be depressing. She ends, however, on a note that harkens back to Barack Obama’s most important speech: the one he gave at the 50th anniversary of the Selma march where he talked about what it means to be an American. Stewart emphasized the same theme.

If we want to guard against demagogues and theocrats who wish to “redeem” America, we don’t need a new theory of American democracy. We just need to recover and restore the vision of a nation dedicated to the proposition that all men and women are created equal.
