It’s never been my belief that Trump went into Election Night ‘16 expecting to win. Every indication has been that he and his cohorts expected to come close enough to whine about “voter fraud” or “electoral fraud” and give him a platform to spend years whining to the ignorant masses about how he was “cheated” out of the presidency. So when he won, it totally defied his expectations and left him with the impression that there had to be something about him that led to his victory.

This is why he is so vehemently against any other explanation for ‘16, but in particular the suggestion that Russian interference juiced the numbers in his favor. His insistence that any interference was actually in favor of the Democrats really fits in here, because it makes his “win” seem even more amazing to him, that he overcame efforts by Dems to rig the election to win by a “landslide.”

Did you ever hear of a show called LOOK? It was on Showtime in the states years ago and it was all CTV with a story was built around the CTV action. It fascinated me. One of the episodes showed someone putting boogers on the handrail of an escalator and then all the people who touched it thereafter. (Found it! It was a movie first. Who knew? More about the show.)

That is literally seared into my brain and I now can never go anywhere without thinking about that. Not that it’s debilitating or anything but it is definitely creepy AF.

I guess the ONLY thing Trump has in common with the Mid-Western mindset is a disdain for the “other”. It never ceases to amaze me how a charlatan like Trump can bamboozle a significant percentage of people against their own personal economic self-interests over and over again.

It’s good. A lot of people are still undecided. I’ve only decided on Biden within the last couple days. I liked what I saw at the Town Hall last night. I’m not against Warren, Klobuchar, or Pete. But I like Biden the most at this point. I kept on going back to the that that the most ideologically moderate Dem I’ve ever voted for in an gubernatorial race here is delivering some of the most progressive legislation we’ve had in Virginia. That said, I understand why each other candidate has their appeal even Bernie who I immensely dislike and Bloomberg who I feel is too corporate though Saghen did make a nice point explaining his NYC tax policy.

You really miss a lot if you skip out on a movie because it’s subtitled IMO. I’d much rather watch a subtitled foreign movie than a dubbed one. It was darkly funny. The weird thing is that Trump brought up Gone with the Wind in Colorado of all places and Sunset Boulevard which is about a delusional has been movie star. I’m seeing more and more foreign movies and tv shows. I saw an Israeli movie yesterday in the theater and I’m watching a Belorussian one now about occupied life during WWII.

What finally sold me on Biden was seeing how things have been working in Richmond since the Dems gained both Houses. I want the candidate that I feel will get us back the Senate and increase our House numbers. I feel that person is Biden at this point. Ideologically I probably lean closer to Warren.

Interestingly, Czech PM Andrej Babiš recently decided that he’s not even gonna bother meeting the 2% NATO defense spending commitment - after promising that the Czech Republic would do so at the 2017 NATO summit.

The story floating around behind Babiš’ change of mind is that Babiš has privately told his government colleagues that he strongly believes Trump’s not gonna get re-elected and that a new POTUS, whomever that may be, will most likely drop the whole matter and with Trump gone, Babiš reckons that the Czech Republic has nothing to really worry about.

No, it’s called Okhota na gaulyaytera (Hunting the Gauleitner.) It’s a miniseries. My only complaint is that the German spoken is dubbed into Belorussian and then subtitled in English. You can find it on Prime. But yeah this is pretty brutal so far. It doesn’t shy away from the fact that there were people in the USSR that collaborated with the Nazis.

Even if he does get the senate for 2 years (the most he’ll get) I’d bet little of consequence and even less to repair the previous 4 years will get passed.

I really think a lot of people read way too much into him talking about that. I read that as him contrasting how hyper-partisan Trump is and how Biden wouldn’t just be the President of the Democrats but the President of all Americans. I understand the criticism and I definitely think he comes off naive when he talks about Congressional Republicans but I think he’s the best choice for a big knockout punch.

Treasury maybe. And she has experience running a government agency too. I like Warren to either stay in the Senate and shepherd legislation or to be in the cabinet if she’s not the nominee. Here in GA we have a cool program put together by the late Tommy Nobis, called Nobis Works. My son went through it after high school. He learned a lot and is now employed outside the program by his own skills in landing a job.

But, while in the program, he made minimum wage. He worked for Kroger through them and it was hard for him to get Kroger to see beyond his autism. That’s why he quit and went out on his own. He’s making almost double minimum wage, but it’s still not enough to survive on his own, even with roommates.

Of course this is true for everyone right now, wages have not kept up with housing costs and other expenses. We’re still lagging way behind on helping everyone get some equal footing in this country.

My son has at least 3 close friends on the spectrum and none of them are currently employed. Two get disability and one is lucky enough to have a very supportive and pretty well off family. Two also have bipolar disorder and anxiety/depression disorders and one has a seizure disorder that is controlled with medication. My son doesn’t have those particular struggles(except the anxiety disorder part, which is tough enough) but he’s still having trouble finding a good job that pays enough. He works at a warehouse for a dept store chain right now, I’m hoping they value his work ethic and persistence when it comes time for raises.

My old neighbor in Lubbock has advised me of a police raid in the old ‘hood this morning. According to her, about a dozen ninja-suited SWAT types rode into the front yard of a nearby house on a “tank” (presumably LPD’s surplus MRAP) and immediately kicked the front door in. They were armed with the usual black rifles, shotguns, and what looked like a belt-fed machine gun and a .50 cal rifle. (The neighbor doesn’t know armored vehicles but she does know guns.) About 20 other cops had quietly moved into the alley and the neighboring yards a little earlier. They were accompanied by some tough-looking types in suits. They emerged a few minutes later with 3 sullen looking white people in handcuffs. The crime scene detectives and others, my guess is DEA, are still there.

You really miss a lot if you skip out on a movie because it’s subtitled IMO. I’d much rather watch a subtitled foreign movie than a dubbed one. It was darkly funny. The weird thing is that Trump brought up Gone with the Wind in Colorado of all places and Sunset Boulevard which is about a delusional has been movie star. I’m seeing more and more foreign movies and tv shows. I saw an Israeli movie yesterday in the theater and I’m watching a Belorussian one now about occupied life during WWII.

I like to watch movies in other languages, especially if it’s a movie that I have already seen in English. All Blu-Ray movies come with a choice of language, for Region A (North America) it’s English, Spanish (Mexican) and French (Canadian). Disney film especially are fun to watch in other languages. I have Rapunzel and Frozen in German and Hunchback of Notre Dame in French: Canadian French but I think it is better than the European French version that I have seen excerpts from online.

I could vote for either. Joe, because he’s pretty steady and Trump wouldn’t rattle him; Warren, because after she took the bark off Bloomberg the other night I’m pretty sure she’d be able to rattle Trump pretty good.

I’m pretty much good with anybody but Bernie (potential Mondale-scale whupping in store) and Pete (not a big enough personality, Trump would eat his lunch).

Even Bloomberg, if it came to that. He’d get under Trump’s skin for sure, and we’ll need that from whoever emerges.

Warren has already rattled a lot of people. I think it’s one reason that word might have come down from on high in the media markets to try to torpedo her campaign if possible. She is not dealing out platitudes and she is qualified and serious enough that she will try, and probably get, some of her policies passed if elected - and assuming some Senate seats flip Democratic as well.

That my financial adviser mentioned her by name four months ago indicates that in the RW sphere she is already getting noticed and has traction as a threat.

If I were to rank what I think are the hills to die on, they would be:
(1) remove remaining political disenfranchisement, and
(2) fix any lingering bigotry in the justice system.

To me those should be no-brainers and certainly most Democrats would agree.

But if you’re campaigning on such gimmicks as eliminating college debt, or taxing churches, etc., those are just too segment-specific to go all crazy in undermining your party.

We live in a country where a third of the people still think the world was created 6000 years ago.

Working in a society like that is never going to allow the type of progressivism that AOC wants. It just isn’t going to work.

Which is why I never encourage Democratic candidates to go all atheist in their public discourses, because claiming such non-beliefs is still seen as outcast in our society.

As a middle-aged fogie myself, I think far too many people my age and older don’t have much of a clue what’s going on either. The whole point of “OK, Boomer” was to push back on the “back in my day I worked a part time job and went to college, so you can just suck up your college debt” and “give up avacado toast and buy a house,” neither of which work today. And then there’s the whole generation growing up on training at school to dodge bullets. None of those things are workable in the long run.

I like most of the incumbant challenges they are backing. Lipinski and Cuellar need to be replaced. I think the Cornyn one isn’t going to work, but as long as they back Hegar, that’s ok.

As someone said back after the 2016 election, these “kids” have grown up on Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and a whole host of fiction telling them that not only can they not rely on adults to take care of them, but that the adults may be part of the problem. We can’t just expect them to just vote as we see fit. We kinda messed it up. It’s going to be their world.

They just act like if you don’t support Bernie, it must be because you’re stupid. TBH four years ago, I genuinely appreciate the idealism he inspired because hell that was me sixteen years ago. I’ve been that kid a lot more recently than the “boomers” they despise. But I think he’s really created something awful too. The whole if you don’t support my candidate, you must be stupid. I as you all know canvassed for the Democrat that lost to Tom Perriello. One of the first things I did for Tom was to get signatures that got him on the ballot. One of the people I got to sign was a Northam backer who just happened to be the then State Senator in our county seat who is now our Congresswoman. Bernie’s people think it has to be Bernie or nothing. They need to combine their genuine want for change to help elect likeminded candidates. Otherwise, they’re just dickbags. I hate the Tea Party but they knew how to fall in once they lost.

He won New Hampshire four years ago in a landslide. This time he barely beat Pete. Lowest percentage for an New Hampshire winner since 1952 yet he wants to act like he’s on the way to being the nominee. He’s not. And I look forward to more exposing of his hypocrisy. By the way, I won’t give him an attaboy for the interference because he would if he read the Mueller Report would have known that the Russians were helping him last time and he shrugged it off.

You have to understand that by supporting Trump who hates our international system of alliances and Bernie who is uninterested at best in foreign affairs is that Russia benefits from having one of them in the WH since it allows Russia to threaten the sovereignty of its neighbors unchecked and what’s more is Bernie and Trump are both polarizing figures too. I don’t know if Bernie outright encourages interference on his behalf like Trump did but he does benefit from it and he has consistently since 2016.

They just saw they had a young guy at the time who took advantage of the fact that the GOP base got into a rage because Charlie Crist didn’t despise Obama and rode it into the Senate. It’s my understanding Jeb’s people have some stories about how duplicious a guy Rubio is.

So lunch and shopping today with my sister and a friend — so three old white ladies all at least 70 years old. The only positions in common were absolute hatred of Trump, belief that his reelection would doom our nation, and total dislike of Bernie.

My sister, whose favorite is Klobuchar, insisted that none of the current crop of candidates has the stage presence to defeat Trump and that (as many of us believe) he will not debate anyone. (My sister always said that the only Democrat Trump would debate was Marianne Williamson). She hasn’t seen more than a few minutes of debates because of her schedule.

The friend supports Bloomberg and believes he has the best chance of defeating Trump; she watched the debate and criticized Warren for shouting and being shrill and hated the attacks on Bloomberg; she shares the circular firing squad narrative. She also (and here I agree with her) thought the questions were terrible — that they should have been more real issue oriented.

But let’s hope Bernie does not get a plurality and that Elizabeth somehow manages to overcome the MSM attempts to eliminate her.

I really think the GOP’s actions the past decade are based on they had no idea how to respond to Obama being the first Democrat since FDR to get over 50% of the popular vote twice and I have to admit that I took for granted how hard that was. I can’t wait to see Obama on the trail this fall. Hopefully he does an appearance in Virginia even though we’re becoming more solidly blue with time.

Same here. What I need to see from a not-Trump Republican before believing in their sincerity is two things:

1) A clear admission that Trump is the perfection of movement conservatism, and that everything the left has said about the right for decades has basically been proven true.

2) Some evidence of a more general repudiation of the willful ignorance, gross stupidity, malice and bigotry that are so characteristic of Republicans, as opposed to merely despising Trump.

Over the past year, the local American Independent (Wallace racists) have actually grown more than the Republicans.

Don’t know what to make of that.

Total county registration is up only +27k. The Undeclared are way down, though they still outnumber the Republicans.

But isn’t that usually just people thinking they’re registering as independents? At least in California, most of the American Independent Party people seem to be people who would probably have put down No Party Preference, the California equivalent of Independent.
