Nor I. I just said in another chat that you have to be a Kremlinologist to understand either him or Trump, and I don’t mean that as an accusation of pro-Russian, I mean it in terms of “80 percent of what he says verbally is kayfabe. Just like Trump’s 95%.”

My mind is clear for my set on Sunday night at Gotham Comedy Club. I’m debating on whether or not to do the Rush Limbuagh Joke (don’t care how you spell his name, it’s standup). It’s one of those items that will play in NYC, but not in other places. Yeah I’m going to go for it. I also make fun of Jim Bakker, racists and talk about being Jewish in the age of Epstein and Wiensteins. It’s only a few minute set so I have to limit myself.

So, does anyone think we’d have avoided Trump if the Obama administration had aggressively pursued criminal charges against the leaders of the financial institutions that created the 2007-08 Great global recession? I saw it brought up in a tweet feed. I am a “no.” I think Obama should have been more aggressive, though I understand the imperative of just getting the country back on a reliable economic footing, but I think the crazies that love Trump were just waiting for a leader to mouth their grievances regardless. I guess going after swindlers might have put the lie to the Tea Party protests about how Democrats are the party of high taxes and useless programs, but I don’t really think there was ever that much thought in the astroturf movement that led to Trump.

“Hey I got to tell you nobody loved me as a kid. Nobody wanted to play with me. So I played with myself!”

“Walking past a bar in New York, sign says “Topless and Bottomless”. Curious so I walk in. Nobody was there!”

“I made that first record. Told it was a hit. Waiting for the royalty check. Year later it comes. It’s 2¢! Take it to the bank and the check bounced.”

“I was in first grade. Teacher said I was stupid. Asked for a second opinion she said you’re ugly. Asked for a third opinion. She said Your Momma dresses you funny!”

If the DOJ went after white collar crime with the same amount of effort they spend going after drugs, then Trump and his 3 eldest kids would have been in jail for a variety of crimes before Obama ever became president.

It turns out her fortune was vastly overestimated. The records filed with the probate court showed her estate was worth about 1.5 million dollars. Cooper makes more than that in a year.

Unless the Dems win the Senate and Schumer changes the rules to end the “two-track system” BS regarding the filibuster so that the Repubs must continue “debating” in order to hold up bills and nominations, then Bernie’s proposals (hehe) are DOA in the event he wins the presidency. The next four years would be a series of votes that go nowhere or result in such compromises that his own followers end up forsaking him and going in search of another messiah.

re: #49 danarchy

Cooper is a wealthy guy, but not that wealthy.

In the1860’s-1870’s, Cornelius Vanderbilt was the richest man in America. After he died, his eldest son and heir was the richest man in America until he died. Gloria Vanderbilt (Cooper’s mom) became the richest child in the world when her father died in the 1930’s… but assorted aunts/uncles/cousins/trustees/guardians greatly diminished that fortune. By the time she came of age she was still heiress-rich, but not Getty-rich or Rockefeller-rich.

By the 1970’s-1980’s, Gloria’s money was almost entirely her own earnings from her jeans company. Anderson Cooper inherited a couple of million from mom, but most of his own $100 million net worth is because his CNN salary is in the 8 figures (has been for years), and he’s invested reasonably well.

So, I was watching this after spending a large part of the day thinking about how god-damned many political norms, and just rules of basic law and sanity, have been completely dismantled in the past three years, and frankly, I’m *really* disheartened. (Yes, even more than usual.)

Bloodbath at the DOJ - Roger Stone Sentenced (Real Law Review)

I’m just really flummoxed over how many Rubicons does Trump need to cross before the media, and the people, decide, this is not normal. This is not just one of those “both sides” situations. This is serious, and rapidly changing the character of this country for the worse? How many intertwining, mutually supporting stories of outright corruption and criminality do we have to hear before we can all agree *that’s e-f’ing-nough.*

At this point, I’m feeling very fatalistic about the whole mess. I mean, we’re really at the point where it *is* questionable whether Trump could outright murder a person and get away with it without any real repercussions.

And that’s f’ng horrifying.

(Ok, tirade off. Regardless of what you think of my eagle-eyed observations of the current political climate, it’s a good video, and presents really complete timeline of the Stone trial and sentencing from a legal perspective.)

The Ghost of a Flea  Feb 21, 2020 • 11:43:52pm

Um.

Imagine Twitter as a room with a chair in it. You sit down in the chair and “tweet” by saying something aloud: the response is several hundred people bursting into the room at once, all saying different things in different tones and some are completely unintelligible and some are only notable because they’re louder and their gestures are bigger and some seem to not even be responding to what you said. But you are expected to respond, even prompted to respond, quickly, and because of the structure of the conversation, everyone expects you as initiator of the cloud of screaming to be attentive to all the subcomponent waves of people talking over people. All of this pushes you physiologically into excitement and “fast” thinking…highly emotional, reactive, heavy on heuristic assumptions.

It is literally the worst medium possible for any nuanced subject. It is also addictive, because it’s a giant fucking loop of rewards, deprivation of rewards, and punishment. It’s a Skinner box in which everybody performs random intermittent reinforcement on everybody, leaving every single human being participating in good faith stuck in a loop of heightened emotion, frustration, and paranoia that resembles intoxication.
Short term, nice, and even beautiful things can happen on Twitter. But the cruel, ugly, angry-and-scared shit is so powerfully arousing that it sticks with people a lot longer than the latest -aw- moment, because cute puppies do not trigger an urgent instinct to survive that over times shapes into mostly-nonsense

(Some other time we can talk about how even nice Twitter is deeply manipulative and exploited by bad actors but this is going to be long before touching that)

Now…bear with me…but you know who really likes it when people are excited, caught up in the moment, and thus not thinking in careful, critical terms? The people for whom it’s a win if you’re exhausted, defensive, emotionally depleted, and have…under your own power, through your own effort…honed a skillset of searching other’s language for disagreement and then inflating it into a fight?

All stripes of bastards. The entire phylum.

Twitter is the perfect tool for autocracies, scammers, and the shitheel allsorts not just because of disinformation and bots, but because those short messages are easy to misread (because it’s easy to miss context, or nuance that can’t be laid out in tiny boxes of text), and in the misreading there’s all sorts of room for fucking with people, or goading them to fuck up their own day. And since Twitter is a crowded room, once the slap fight has started it will likely continue just because of the ripple of misunderstanding and defensiveness. The limited medium of text and photos is un-nuanced leaving everything open to interpretation…specifically the worst possible interpretation because the Skinnerian loop of Twitter teaches you that you’re going to be attacked at any moment by “the other side,” and relative anonymity means that you have no trust basis or context beyond whatever hurtful, chaotic thing just happened. And even when there is a real difference of opinion, the medium inevitably pushes toward emotional overload just by its design.

This is fucking genius if you’re looking to hurt and abuse people. Good faith operators bounce off one another, minor slights and misunderstanding get magnified into calumnies and threats…and, in what can only be described as the ne plus ultra of bullying strategy, absolute top marks in the cynicism of tyranny, good faith operators become bad faiths operators seeking out people to pick fights with and declare a “win” over, all inside of a completely imaginary rhetorical space. A calculated bad faith operator can activate hundreds of good faith operators by pushing them into emotional overload and setting them a target. And if you do it right, they will put more time, effort, and cruelty into inflicting hurt than someone trained to do it.

Social media is really, really good and cheap as a fear-and-anger- spreading medium. These are basic emotions pulled out of us when we feel threatened, complete with massive physiological gear shift that makes us think short term and act in aggressive ways, even when the “threat” is entirely abstract, and when the “threat” is self-invented because the person feeling threatened is human, and all humans have defective brain meat where not only do the lizard reflexes fire up to run away from an entirely imaginary bear, but the stupid head-meat actually long-term learns to be scared of thinking about bears.

Shit, I have according-to-Hoyle post-traumatic stress: my therapy is entirely about acknowledging that once upon a time there was an actual bear that I had to survive, but also have an entire wing of my brain attuned to nonsensical, almost superstitious, behavior that seemed like a good idea when life required guessing how to survive that one, very specific, very really dangerous bear. Apophenia, but just for bear sign.

Now I sit and I watch people do this to themselves, and to others, on Twitter: First they have fun because anger is very self-gratifying, but then they’re also scared, and it all feels very life affirming and the language games provide an outlet for all sorts of dark urges to be more clever, more powerful, more rhetorical devastating are fueled by a desire to “survive” a rhetoric fight that seems to have all the stakes. But the fucked up part is that it’s pretty clear that the only winners are the people who don’t care, who just enjoy the conflict for conflict’s sake. Because they’re sadists and awful people, and it’s a win for them if everyone else accepts sadism and awful as normal operating procedure; it cuts down on overhead.

Twitter is passive income for abusers: just put in the equity up front and you can get everybody you want hurt to hurt each other—and themselves. Thinking bigger, Twitter is perfect for tyrants. You want a populace that don’t trust each other, feel generally inured to unpleasantness, and have just enough fear that you can suck value out of them with only the occasional spot of resistance? Bam: they will do it to one another, with just a bit of seeding. And the depressing, dystopian thing is that even the anger and fear pointed at targets that deserve anger and fear is a win for the bastards, because you can’t shame or humiliate institutions that have already decided your opinions don’t matter.

I read Twitter sometimes and, frankly, nobody’s “side” making a good showing out there. When strychnine-pissing contests break out, nobody comes away “winning” because there was never a baseline thing to fucking win. And—especially frankly—the insufferable hypebeasts that make shit worse by constantly inflating the language of conflict are equally distributed and have more in common with one another than with any putative cause they defend…and I don’t think it matters what they’re stanning for at all. That they use the same tactics, that they relish the tiny power trip of winning at short form rhetoric, makes fucking all of them a waste of time. Like, I obviously love sarcasm and hyperbole, but Twitter just rank with sour, defensive irritability.

If I say “Twitter is fucking people up” I am saying it from a place of general concern because…this does not strike me as a healthy loop of behavior, but at the same time it is an intensely rewarding loop of behavior right up until the moment it burns you out. And I’ve lived that. If I say “Twitter is also nightmare social control technology” it’s because it’s eerily close to that one definition of fascism where you don’t give people self-determination, but you do give them a medium in which to express all their angry at how they’re being fucked over. If I say “most of the Twitter fights dragging on right now aren’t fucking worth it because they’re basically a unhealthy coping mechanism for actual, terrible things, because anger provides false clarity and makes you high, and maybe don’t trust a habit that makes you high particularly when a bunch of fucking rich technocrats seem to love the idea that you’re governed by this unhealthy coping mechanism they control and monetize” I hope you understand that I am deadly fucking serious and I not saying this to perform cleverness or aloofness by dinging a popular medium of expression. And I hope you understand that when I say “The shitty people on Twitter is a feeding ground for narcissists that want their dicks hard and maybe we should start using ‘is this situation going to help a narcissist get hard?’ as a vetting standard when using Twitter?” I am being intentionally comically vulgar and 100% serious.

Stop helping shitty, petty people jerk off. Do not parcipate in their shitty, petty worldview where everything is a tiny power struggle and “the win” in the short term is worth it. Whatever persons or group you’re thinking about right now in terms of “well THOSE people are the shitty petty and it’s okay that I’m pushing back and therefore”….NOPE, NOT WORTH IT, STILL CREATING JERK OFF MATERIALS FOR SHITHEELS, YES YOUR PUTATIVE SIDE HAS SHITTY PETTY PEOPLE TOO AND THEY”RE FLOGGING IT WHEN YOU DOUBLE DOWN AND SAYING SOMETHING STUPID AND MEAN BECAUSE IT MEANS LIFE CAN’T BE BETTER.AND THEREFORE THEYRE NOT SHITTY.

I joke, but this is genuinely scary to me; it’s specifically scary because it reminds me of social control systems and abuse I’ve lived through. Catharsis…ejecting that emotional load built up from hurting…is something smart abusers build into their systems. And Twitter is all about the hot ropes of catharsis being sprayed in every direction. You’re being fed the illusion of victory and bloodsport in a series of trivial conflicts that amount to little more than language games…surrounded by actors that want everything to escalate, be worse. And the words get lost fast, but the emotions, the rage and the resentment and the perfumed fury, are lingering like fucking dioxins. Best case scenario you’re Mithradates, poisoning yourself enough to survive someone else’s poisoning attempt…but eventually the arsenic rots anyway.

Yeah, that will work.

Stone’s attorneys know there is no chance whatsoever that Jackson will rule in favor of a new trial, so they’re trying to smear her preemptively in order to speed up the process of getting their client a pardon. Since Trump has been ranting and raving about how “mean” Jackson is, this is the attorneys trying to tell him without saying aloud that they know Roger won’t get a new trial and to just go ahead and pardon him now while excusing it by citing the judge as being “biased.”

The city of Miami will begin trapping and relocating peacocks from one neighborhood after residents complained of slippery piles of poop, dive-bombing birds and screeching and squawking at all hours of the night.

“They are a pest. They are noisy. They do poop. The poop is significant. And they are getting very aggressive over time,” Pat Tzakis, a resident of Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood, told the City Commission at a meeting this month. “When I moved into the neighborhood 25 years ago, they were mainly confined to 17th Avenue…now we have about 100 peacocks in our own neighborhood, which is small. They’re getting aggressive as they multiply. Please help us out in finding a solution for these magnificent creatures.”

More than 100 wild animals have reportedly dropped dead near the centre of the coronavirus outbreak in China.

Experts claimed that some of the animals died after being poisoned by disinfectant sprayed by workers to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to state media.

A total of 135 animal bodies belonging to 17 species - including blackbirds, wild boars and weasels - were found in Chongqing, which borders Hubei Province.

Why would it cause an establishment meltdown, and why are you considering Bernie and Warren together? What is the Democratic establishment, keeping in mind that the only person running for the Dem presidential slot who actually had any input to the 2020 convention rules is a certain Bernard Sanders?

Me, for one.
Many years ago, a peacock (who got named George) flew into the yard of my mother’s house in So Cal, and decided to stay for a while. At first Mom was amused (he WAS a gorgeous bird), but after a (short) while, the novelty wore right the hell off. For one thing, we found that peacocks have a very loud and strident call - which he loved to exercise by dawn’s early light (and all day): for another, my mother’ terrace was terrazzo:, which, unfortunately, was prone to get eaten away by the very acidic peacock poop, which George produced in voluminous quantity.
George eventually flew away on his own, but the pits in the terrazzo remained as a souvenir ever after….

I’ll vote for him if he wins but he’s showing that he has no desire to bring the different factions of the party together if he wins and for that, I have no love for him and wish him to fail. re: #122 Shropshire Slasher

Vox had a piece from June 2019 that lists some specific policy differences, with an overall difference highlighted:

The fundamental difference in ideology

Underlying all this is a fundamental difference in how Sanders and Warren see themselves on the ideological spectrum.

Warren is a social democrat. Sanders is a democratic socialist. The difference between the two is best explained by how Warren and Sanders convey their skepticism toward capitalism, said Sheri Berman, a political scientist with Barnard College, who has written extensively on the history of the left.

“Both Sanders and Warren have put forth a slew of policies a couple of election cycles ago would have been seen just far ahead of where the Democratic Party was,” Berman said. “If you believe in capitalism and you believe it has gone a little off the rails in the last generation, but it remains the best system to maintain economic growth and democracy, then Warren is the better candidate for you.”

“Or do you believe that capitalism is inherently unjust, inherently unstable?” Then Sanders is the right fit, Berman said.

That part I missed out on.

I just assumed that nobody wanted to face the political consequences of letting the Free Market take its inexorable course an weed out inefficient actors so they could be replaced by more robust ones.

Vox had a piece from June 2019 that lists some specific policy differences, with an overall difference highlighted:

It’s interesting in that I am ideologically closer to Bernie as I am a Marxist. That said, I far prefer Warren because I know that you can not ever trust anyone who says the word “Revolution”. Incremental progress - slowly, democratically, via education and programs that help the masses even if they don’t see it at first (Obamacare leading to single payer) are the real way to gain a better future.

I agree with Anne Laurie on this:

For the record, I absolutely DO NOT think that Senator Sanders, after being briefed that Russia was attempting to interfere in his favor during the 2020 election, deliberately attempted to hide this information from the voters.

I think, just as he’s said he ‘disregarded’ the nagging chest pains prior to his heart attack, he put his head down and hoped the Russian news… would go away. At least until after the election. Because it just wasn’t a good time to deal with distractions, dammit!

Didn’t work to keep his heart muscle from dying; isn’t gonna work any better in the general election, even if he wins the Nevada caucuses.

I think Sanders is choosing to look the other way at anything that doesn’t help him win. The problem is that it’s short term thinking. Take the PACs supporting him. Where’s that money coming from? Won’t it be great if the Senate starts investigating him in September and October?

He claimed he hadn’t eaten in five years, since his woo-woo allowed him to draw nourishment from thin air. Marin County hot tubbers were paying $500 a head to attend his seminars. The scam unraveled when he was busted eating a chicken pot pie.

Exactly. Of course the Army first forced Chrysler to form the Chrysler Defense subsidiary to protect their contract from any proceedings anyway. Chrysler then sold the Lima concession to GM in 1982 which has kept GM safe from bankruptcy ever since despite being even worse financial shape than 70’s Chrysler through till the Obama bailout.

I’m looking for articles that state the policy difference between Warren and Sanders that are written without a bias for either candidate. Any help would be appreciated.

If you look at foreign policy votes relating to Russia, Warren has voted with the standard Democratic line, while Bernie has usually either avoided the vote or voted with Putin’s desire. For example, on the June 2017 Senate vote, only Bernie and Rand Paul voted against the sanctions.

Bernie has made it clear he wants to get rid of billionaires — Warren merely wants to tax them.

L’Arche founder Jean Vanier sexually abused women - internal report

A religious leader who founded a celebrated organisation for people with learning difficulties sexually abused six women in France, an internal report says.

Canadian Jean Vanier set up the global network L’Arche in France in 1964 and died last year aged 90.

None of the women he abused were themselves disabled, the report says.

An investigation into Vanier was commissioned by L’Arche International last year after suspicions were raised.

It’s said he didn’t abuse any of the intellectually disabled women in his care, but who can know?

One of the family’s 54-room mansion built in the late 1890s and located along the Hudson River is a national historic site at Hyde Park. You can tour it - but no photography. Great example of the Gilded Age. And the attached gardens are very nice to walk around in.

Generational decay is a big part of the panic that empowers the Republican Party. We all know the local rich guy whose children turned out to be worthless. In the case of privileged Middle America, the hinterland gentry as I call it, this is aggravated by poor reproductive choices and bad child rearing practices, both of which are culturally ingrained.

School curriculums have been dumbed down to the point of insanity. Schools where I am no longer teach geography, spelling or grammar. No learning to read a map, studying other countries, no understanding how to write so it makes sense and don’t even get me started on the cuts in history and sciences. My kid has been out of school since 2012, I’m scared to know how bad it is now.

I really think we should go back and try to get back to the way we educated people before this madness. Public schools at one time produced scientists and engineers that sent us to outer space and gave us modern medicine and technology. We sent kids to college ready for more advanced learning. I was lucky I guess. I went to an amazing high school. We had one whole building devoted to just science classes. We also had a football team and the obsession that goes with it, but we had a catalog of classes to choose from in every subject. American history alone was 5 different classes from first contact, thru manifest destiny, the world wars and up to Vietnam(I graduated in 1978). Before high school, the curriculum led us to the place we were ready for high school. I had German and French classes in 7 and 8th grades and a bunch of classes about writing and researching . We’re not investing nearly enough money in education now and we’re paying for it in ways far beyond money.

Because it was expensive.

The public schools I went to (California, before Prop 13) had 20-25 kids to a class, honors and AP courses in high school, gifted and talented programs in elementary school. We got new textbooks every 4 years. The science labs were well-supplied, as was the library. There was arts and athletics and field trips.

Prop 13 passed shortly after I graduated. My sister (7 grades behind me), by the time she got to the same high school, there was 35-40 kids to a class, textbooks were 9 years old, falling apart, and there weren’t enough of them to go around, the library hadn’t had a new shipment in years, there was no AP or honors classes. No bio, chem or physics labs, no art classes and no field trips. She ended up doing sophomore, junior and senior years at a private school where tuition was as high as the State Universities.

I went to a public high school in suburban Houston in the 1970s. A lot of students went on to great universities. In fact, the current mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, graduated from my high school and went on to Harvard Law. (He was one of the ~4 percent of African Americans at Klein.) My world history teacher was also the girls high school basketball coach. Guess what I got to learn about in world history? Ancient aliens and Nazca lines. Seriously, it was dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb. And what was I reading outside of school? Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipelago.” I did most of my educating outside of school.

We have to remember that for a couple of decades 1950s, 1960s and into the 1970s, some school districts in the deep South either completely shut down or were abandoned by white students due to integration being a scary, scary thing. The kind of education you got was based on where you lived and who you lived among.
