At this point, I’m feeling very fatalistic about the whole mess. I mean, we’re really at the point where it *is* questionable whether Trump could outright murder a person and get away with it without any real repercussions.

And that’s f’ng horrifying.

Um.

Imagine Twitter as a room with a chair in it. You sit down in the chair and “tweet” by saying something aloud: the response is several hundred people bursting into the room at once, all saying different things in different tones and some are completely unintelligible and some are only notable because they’re louder and their gestures are bigger and some seem to not even be responding to what you said. But you are expected to respond, even prompted to respond, quickly, and because of the structure of the conversation, everyone expects you as initiator of the cloud of screaming to be attentive to all the subcomponent waves of people talking over people. All of this pushes you physiologically into excitement and “fast” thinking…highly emotional, reactive, heavy on heuristic assumptions.

It is literally the worst medium possible for any nuanced subject. It is also addictive, because it’s a giant fucking loop of rewards, deprivation of rewards, and punishment. It’s a Skinner box in which everybody performs random intermittent reinforcement on everybody, leaving every single human being participating in good faith stuck in a loop of heightened emotion, frustration, and paranoia that resembles intoxication.
Short term, nice, and even beautiful things can happen on Twitter. But the cruel, ugly, angry-and-scared shit is so powerfully arousing that it sticks with people a lot longer than the latest -aw- moment, because cute puppies do not trigger an urgent instinct to survive that over times shapes into mostly-nonsense

_{(Some other time we can talk about how even nice Twitter is deeply manipulative and exploited by bad actors but this is going to be long before touching that)}

Now…bear with me…but you know who really likes it when people are excited, caught up in the moment, and thus not thinking in careful, critical terms? The people for whom it’s a win if you’re exhausted, defensive, emotionally depleted, and have…under your own power, through your own effort…honed a skillset of searching other’s language for disagreement and then inflating it into a fight?

All stripes of bastards. The entire phylum.

Twitter is the perfect tool for autocracies, scammers, and the shitheel allsorts not just because of disinformation and bots, but because those short messages are easy to misread (because it’s easy to miss context, or nuance that can’t be laid out in tiny boxes of text), and in the misreading there’s all sorts of room for fucking with people, or goading them to fuck up their own day. And since Twitter is a crowded room, once the slap fight has started it will likely continue just because of the ripple of misunderstanding and defensiveness. The limited medium of text and photos is un-nuanced leaving everything open to interpretation…specifically the worst possible interpretation because the Skinnerian loop of Twitter teaches you that you’re going to be attacked at any moment by “the other side,” and relative anonymity means that you have no trust basis or context beyond whatever hurtful, chaotic thing just happened. And even when there is a real difference of opinion, the medium inevitably pushes toward emotional overload just by its design.

This is fucking genius if you’re looking to hurt and abuse people. Good faith operators bounce off one another, minor slights and misunderstanding get magnified into calumnies and threats…and, in what can only be described as the ne plus ultra of bullying strategy, absolute top marks in the cynicism of tyranny, good faith operators become bad faiths operators seeking out people to pick fights with and declare a “win” over, all inside of a completely imaginary rhetorical space. A calculated bad faith operator can activate hundreds of good faith operators by pushing them into emotional overload and setting them a target. And if you do it right, they will put more time, effort, and cruelty into inflicting hurt than someone trained to do it.

Social media is really, really good and cheap as a fear-and-anger- spreading medium. These are basic emotions pulled out of us when we feel threatened, complete with massive physiological gear shift that makes us think short term and act in aggressive ways, even when the “threat” is entirely abstract, and when the “threat” is self-invented because the person feeling threatened is human, and all humans have defective brain meat where not only do the lizard reflexes fire up to run away from an entirely imaginary bear, but the stupid head-meat actually long-term learns to be scared of thinking about bears.

Shit, I have according-to-Hoyle post-traumatic stress: my therapy is entirely about acknowledging that once upon a time there was an actual bear that I had to survive, but also have an entire wing of my brain attuned to nonsensical, almost superstitious, behavior that seemed like a good idea when life required guessing how to survive that one, very specific, very really dangerous bear. Apophenia, but just for bear sign.

Now I sit and I watch people do this to themselves, and to others, on Twitter: First they have fun because anger is very self-gratifying, but then they’re also scared, and it all feels very life affirming and the language games provide an outlet for all sorts of dark urges to be more clever, more powerful, more rhetorical devastating are fueled by a desire to “survive” a rhetoric fight that seems to have all the stakes. But the fucked up part is that it’s pretty clear that the only winners are the people who don’t care, who just enjoy the conflict for conflict’s sake. Because they’re sadists and awful people, and it’s a win for them if everyone else accepts sadism and awful as normal operating procedure; it cuts down on overhead.

Twitter is passive income for abusers: just put in the equity up front and you can get everybody you want hurt to hurt each other—and themselves. Thinking bigger, Twitter is perfect for tyrants. You want a populace that don’t trust each other, feel generally inured to unpleasantness, and have just enough fear that you can suck value out of them with only the occasional spot of resistance? Bam: they will do it to one another, with just a bit of seeding. And the depressing, dystopian thing is that even the anger and fear pointed at targets that deserve anger and fear is a win for the bastards, because you can’t shame or humiliate institutions that have already decided your opinions don’t matter.

I read Twitter sometimes and, frankly, nobody’s “side” making a good showing out there. When strychnine-pissing contests break out, nobody comes away “winning” because there was never a baseline thing to fucking win. And—especially frankly—the insufferable hypebeasts that make shit worse by constantly inflating the language of conflict are equally distributed and have more in common with one another than with any putative cause they defend…and I don’t think it matters what they’re stanning for at all. That they use the same tactics, that they relish the tiny power trip of winning at short form rhetoric, makes fucking all of them a waste of time. Like, I obviously love sarcasm and hyperbole, but Twitter just rank with sour, defensive irritability.

If I say “Twitter is fucking people up” I am saying it from a place of general concern because…this does not strike me as a healthy loop of behavior, but at the same time it is an intensely rewarding loop of behavior right up until the moment it burns you out. And I’ve lived that. If I say “Twitter is also nightmare social control technology” it’s because it’s eerily close to that one definition of fascism where you don’t give people self-determination, but you do give them a medium in which to express all their angry at how they’re being fucked over. If I say “most of the Twitter fights dragging on right now aren’t fucking worth it because they’re basically a unhealthy coping mechanism for actual, terrible things, because anger provides false clarity and makes you high, and maybe don’t trust a habit that makes you high particularly when a bunch of fucking rich technocrats seem to love the idea that you’re governed by this unhealthy coping mechanism they control and monetize” I hope you understand that I am deadly fucking serious and I not saying this to perform cleverness or aloofness by dinging a popular medium of expression. And I hope you understand that when I say “The shitty people on Twitter is a feeding ground for narcissists that want their dicks hard and maybe we should start using ‘is this situation going to help a narcissist get hard?’ as a vetting standard when using Twitter?” I am being intentionally comically vulgar and 100% serious.

Stop helping shitty, petty people jerk off. Do not parcipate in their shitty, petty worldview where everything is a tiny power struggle and “the win” in the short term is worth it. Whatever persons or group you’re thinking about right now in terms of “well THOSE people are the shitty petty and it’s okay that I’m pushing back and therefore”….NOPE, NOT WORTH IT, STILL CREATING JERK OFF MATERIALS FOR SHITHEELS, YES YOUR PUTATIVE SIDE HAS SHITTY PETTY PEOPLE TOO AND THEY”RE FLOGGING IT WHEN YOU DOUBLE DOWN AND SAYING SOMETHING STUPID AND MEAN BECAUSE IT MEANS LIFE CAN’T BE BETTER.AND THEREFORE THEYRE NOT SHITTY.

I joke, but this is genuinely scary to me; it’s specifically scary because it reminds me of social control systems and abuse I’ve lived through. You’re being fed the illusion of victory and bloodsport in a series of trivial conflicts that amount to little more than language games…surrounded by actors that want everything to escalate, be worse. Many years ago, a peacock (who got named George) flew into the yard of my mother’s house in So Cal, and decided to stay for a while. At first Mom was amused (he WAS a gorgeous bird), but after a (short) while, the novelty wore right the hell off. For one thing, we found that peacocks have a very loud and strident call - which he loved to exercise by dawn’s early light (and all day): for another, my mother’ terrace was terrazzo:, which, unfortunately, was prone to get eaten away by the very acidic peacock poop, which George produced in voluminous quantity.
George eventually flew away on his own, but the pits in the terrazzo remained as a souvenir ever after….

Jacobin meant it as an insult to Warren but they said Warren is Justice Brandeis and Bernie is Eugene V. Debs. I don’t know why they meant that as an insult since Justice Brandeis was more directly responsible for change than Debs was. I tend to take Warren’s perspective in that argument btw though Warren isn’t my candidate at the moment.

It’s interesting in that I am ideologically closer to Bernie as I am a Marxist. That said, I far prefer Warren because I know that you can not ever trust anyone who says the word “Revolution”. Incremental progress - slowly, democratically, via education and programs that help the masses even if they don’t see it at first (Obamacare leading to single payer) are the real way to gain a better future.

For the record, I absolutely DO NOT think that Senator Sanders, after being briefed that Russia was attempting to interfere in his favor during the 2020 election, deliberately attempted to hide this information from the voters.

I think, just as he’s said he ‘disregarded’ the nagging chest pains prior to his heart attack, he put his head down and hoped the Russian news… would go away. At least until after the election. Because it just wasn’t a good time to deal with distractions, dammit!

Didn’t work to keep his heart muscle from dying; isn’t gonna work any better in the general election, even if he wins the Nevada caucuses.

I think Sanders is choosing to look the other way at anything that doesn’t help him win. The problem is that it’s short term thinking. Take the PACs supporting him. Where’s that money coming from? Won’t it be great if the Senate starts investigating him in September and October?

Exactly. Of course the Army first forced Chrysler to form the Chrysler Defense subsidiary to protect their contract from any proceedings anyway. Chrysler then sold the Lima concession to GM in 1982 which has kept GM safe from bankruptcy ever since despite being even worse financial shape than 70’s Chrysler through till the Obama bailout.

If you look at foreign policy votes relating to Russia, Warren has voted with the standard Democratic line, while Bernie has usually either avoided the vote or voted with Putin’s desire. For example, on the June 2017 Senate vote, only Bernie and Rand Paul voted against the sanctions.

Bernie has made it clear he wants to get rid of billionaires — Warren merely wants to tax them.

Canadian Jean Vanier set up the global network L’Arche in France in 1964 and died last year aged 90.

None of the women he abused were themselves disabled, the report says.
