Anything off about a billionaire building a grassroots organization?

71
BeachDem  Feb 25, 2020 • 5:55:09pm

The grassroots army of Moms Demand Action is the volunteer wing of Everytown for Gun Safety, the country’s biggest gun violence prevention organization. Everytown has 6 million supporters on its email and phone lists, though the group won’t say how many of those come from Moms Demand

A key group of volunteers who Michael Bloomberg is likely counting on to support his newly announced presidential run, and who represent a cause that’s central to his attempt to appeal to Democratic voters, told BuzzFeed News they are uncertain if they’ll support the billionaire in 2020...

“While he’s our largest donor, it doesn’t mean he is the organization himself,” said Alanna Miller, 19, the Students Demand Action volunteer leader at Duke University and a member of the organization’s national advisory board. “He’s just like any other candidate.”

Many volunteers who spoke with BuzzFeed News pointed out that Moms Demand Action encourages its volunteers to support all “gun sense” candidates.

Quick tangent: I’ll explain later, but the MAGAt at work read a blogger “who really knows his stuff” about diseases and science-y stuff, and apparently some Chinese are developing a natural immunity to COVID-19.

I shut that shit down in about 10 seconds.

“Tom, I don’t think that’s how that stuff works.”

I’m not asking for the name of the blogger, because Tom is reading Instapundit and Ann Coulter. Christ knows what fucked up, borderline white supremacist “science” site he got this nonsense from. I doubt these events change many minds.

Perhaps enough people will finally see that Bernie isn’t all that his followers pretend him to be, so that Joe will win the primary. I guess that is a plus.

It all strikes me as obvious by now, that Pete is drawing away critical support for Joe. Amy is a non actor, as is Steyer.

Bloomberg by celebrity is a force but he’s not going to be the nominee.

Which leaves Warren, who probably pulls from both Joe and Bernie as far as supporters.

At this point I think the best option is to just go with a Biden/Warren ticket and let the chips ride the roulette table.

So that means he doesn’t think that young Latinos & Blacks can turn a small company into a big corporation?

re: #110 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I disagree somewhat on the debate not changing minds - Mike Bloomberg had his campaign effectively ended by his first debate performance, with a lot of help from Warren. This debate so far has knocked a lot of the mythical halo off of Bernie, and I really want him out of the equation before the conventions because he would be slaughtered by the Trump/Putin machine.

My top choices are currently Warren and Biden, both because I agree with a majority of their stances, but also because they are the two best equipped with the ability to influence the downticket races to swing the Senate and to solidify the House.

My daughter commented to me yesterday that Bloomberg seems to be doing highly targeted and yet unimaginative marketing with his mailers. They have gotten a couple ads addressed to them both pointing out what a great president Bloomberg would make, but then there was one sent only to my Chinese son-in-law pointing out that he would do good things for minorities, while my daughter (who shares his very Chinese last name) got one saying he is a great supporter of women and their rights.
I’ve been throwing the ads out without even looking at them, but when Mr. C. and I got ours today, his was about protecting the environment (Mr. C. worked in wildlands restoration and still volunteers doing the same.) I got Bloomberg is a great supporter of women and their rights. As important as women’s rights are to me (and, coincidentally, to Mr. C.) it’s not my only issue. “Oh look. A woman. Let’s send flyer B.” Sigh.

Knowing that the Bee wants to be the “mainstream, but religious, conservative version of the Onion”, did Trump and Miller seriously get invited to put pieces in the Op-Ed, or is the Bee just stirring shit to stir shit?

If this debate made anything clear, two things are so sacrosanct that even “progressive” Democrats dare not attack them:
1) the military;
2) religion.

The final puff answers were mostly nauseating attempts to sound holy.

None of them in the prior two hours were honest about how the only way to pay for expanded social programs will mean cutting the trillion dollar defense spending in half.

Indeed, none of them even opined about a trillion dollar defense package in an annual budget. It’s as if it isn’t there.

I fully expect them to duck questions about Social Security and evidently the CBS folk knew to avoid raising the question of long term SS funding.

This is why Trump feels he can get away with lying everyday: because he knows that most people don’t want the truth anyway.

To say nothing of a whole mess of shitty policy that’s fucking us up, then everyone denies there’s cause and effect between shitty policy and shitty outcome after the fact.

I mean, Rush Fucking Limbaugh is trying to blame the Iraq War debacle on the deep state and Democrats, and it’s not really that much of a rhetorical reach after we had a president who did Iran Contra and then told the public “in my heart, it didn’t feel like I was doing the wrong thing.”

I recall one

It is not about getting rich, it is about being fairly and properly compensated for one’s efforts.

In America we still see life as a crap shoot and any attempt to collectivize or unionize is restricting our personal freedoms and ruining our individual chances of becoming billionaires.

So after two days of bloodshed on Wall Street that have wiped out the year’s gains-to-date, Trump has decided that the most thing he can do…is find someone to blame:

President Donald Trump is “furious” the DOW plunged nearly 2000 points during the past two days over coronavirus fears, wiping out all of 2020’s gains as the November reelection approaches. The President watched the markets from India, and grew even more “unhappy” with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar after a top CDC official warned the coronavirus would spread across the country.

By the way, see if this sounds familiar:

Despite the CDC’s Nancy Messonnier alerting Americans today that it’s “not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses,” Trump White House spokesman Judd Deere said that “what we are seeing today is a political effort by the Left and some in the media to distract and disturb the American people with fearful rhetoric and palace intrigue.”

“The United States economy is the strongest in the world thanks to the leadership and policies of President Trump. The virus remains low risk domestically because of the containment actions taken by this Administration since the first of the year.”

Totally clueless. Market fears are based on fears of collapse of the just-in-time delivery system that the world economy is dependent on.

Another major trade fair in Frankfurt was cancelled - as much out of fear of the virus as about the simple consideration that there is no reason to launch a new line of products if you are not sure you will be able to deliver in time.

And our whole economic model is all about delivering the latest model with all the fancy upgrades that you just have to have.

I would not be shocked.

There’s speculation that Warren has been treating Sanders with kid gloves because she wants to be his VP. But it occurs to me: if Warren keeps some progressive votes that would otherwise go to Sanders, and she prevents him from winning Massachusetts, and her hits on Bloomberg are effective, maybe she’s helping… Biden?

Škoda Auto reckons they’ll run out of vital automotive electronics components (ECU’s) by next weekend. Without those, production pretty much grinds to a halt.

I already have over 50 ship-based tours lined up already for the 2020 season. The first one has already been cancelled, as it involved the trade fair mentioned earlier.

Now I am starting to wonder who is going to want to be on a cruise ship on the Rhine with the Corona virus at large…

This could get existential for me real soon.

I was hearing on NPR the other day about who will get hit by these shortages. Guess the clothing retail stores are ok for a while. They have already gotten their orders for spring/summer clothing, which starts production in China at the beginning of winter to have them ready for stores by late winter. Where they might have problems will be come fall/winter this year if China cannot get factories back open soon enough to gear up for deliveries of those products to retail stores by that season.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The concerns about covid19 aren’t going away anytime soon, and Trump’s more worried about how this affects Trump’s ambitions and future personally than protecting the nation from the threat and mobilizing the CDC and our public health officials.

Contradicting what they say is a great look. Ignoring public health is a great look. That’s the GOP way. The GOP worldview is to slash and burn the safety net - including public health programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare. They also seek deep cuts to the CDC and pandemic prevention programs that help other countries contain emerging illnesses.

It’s all myopic short sighted bulkshit, and enough people fall for it.

We’re watching Trump sabotage functioning government and putting the most incompetent people in charge of programs they don’t have any interest in.

Eric remembers when the CCCP trashed Obama over Ebola…and they continue to give Trump a pass…

As the debacle spreads, I’ve been struck in recent weeks by the press coverage of coronavirus, and specifically Trump’s ineffectual response, compared to how the 2014 Ebola scare in the U.S. under President Barack Obama was covered by the same Beltway press corps. As you may recall, prompted by partisan hysteria voiced by Republicans, the press lost its collective mind covering Ebola and crucified Obama for months, hyping concerns that a deadly domestic outbreak was imminent. By contrast, the press has spent weeks sleepwalking through the Trump coronavirus coverage.

list the issues a Bloomberg presidency will be better for than another 4 years of Trump: tax distribution, health care, guns, climate change, Supreme Court nominees, border walls, LGBTQ rights (despite his personal expression of opinion, yes i do believe his policy responses will be so much better).

Unless you believe Bloomberg is the same pathological liar about every single thing that Trump is, then on every issue, every consequence, he’d be better.

- he hits trump head on and isn’t coy, shy or afraid to do so
- there’s no way ‘he’s a socialist’ could be used against him
- he knows and is well aware of his own history and soft points, though maybe not quite as prepared and polished as he should be.

he recovered from the first debate
did you write him off?
a guy who wants to be president has to have some ego
and he’s got the bucks so that’s not a factor
my guess - he probably planned the first debate that way. not to tank. but certainly to not ‘prepare’ and see what would happen - as a strategy.
and yes, it was a bad idea.
so what did he do?
buckle and crumble? (of course not. I wouldn’t be writing this and if he did, then he’s clearly not prez material)
or did he do the hard work and rebound? learn from it, re-steer, and come back better than he was?

i’m in the voter pool of old(er) white moderates who just want to beat Trump and don’t care so much about specific policy issues - especially ones that are not going to happen this cycle.

Sanders M4A plan has almost no chance to get the votes of Manchin and Sinema, let alone any Senate Republicans.

In the present circumstances this is nothing but a theoretical or philosophical debate. Even granting it’s a great idea and maybe where we’re heading longer term, it’s not going to happen now.

Of course, there will be a whole new narrative after Saturday (half a lifetime in politics)

He started off rather far away and out of site in the trees. Running and hiding was the sensible option. All I can think of was the Syrian T-72 ran out of 125mm ammunition because the rebel IFV was dead to rights before the T-72 laid down smoke and left the road. Hell, at that range, the .50 cal on the tank would have seriously damaged the rebel IFV.

I don’t have any info at all to set the context of the scuffle. Fair chance that the tank commander wasn’t sure the other vehicle was a foe. Hard to tell from the aerial view just how effective a run and hide option would have been and there is no way to tell about the relative experience and training of the crews. Too many unknowns.

The view from inside a buttoned-up tank is pretty limited as well. For a good chunk of that video the tank commander probably wasn’t getting more than a glimpse or two of that APC. So for one, he might not know *what* was out there maneuvering around him. And also wouldn’t be sure how it was armed, or whether it had infantry on board armed with something that could hurt his vehicle. And even a T-72 would not appreciate an RPG-7 being fired into its backside.

The T-72 fires a single shot at an unknown target earlier, and then you see 2 rebel IFV’s to the lower right of the industrial building moving at high speed about half a mile from the T-72. The one IFV continues through the tree grove, plowing over several trees before going onto the main road and confronting the T-72.

A Brit tanker on twitter was also wondering if this was a case of belt buckle tactics, but the T-72 had a clear point blank shot and instead opted to lay smoke and retreat, which was, ahem, strange. Might have simply gotten spooked and thought the IFV had something nasty on board to shoot with.

re: #377 #thegreatpoolpondconversion (dangerman)

if i had the luxury of this being an ideological and restructural election, i would prefer warren. she’d be a better president/administrator - ie presider, than sanders. mayor pete has shown great promise and has done very well. he isnt ready yet.

i don’t feel i/we have that luxury - the ‘what if’ / ‘if only’ candidate.

so (imo) biden, bloomberg.

i think the ‘small d’ that lefty said above is true.

biden could be a great stabilizer. he’s been smoldering up to now. If he doesn’t catch fire after SC, then I don’t think he can get it done (get the nom and decisively trounce trump). Another Democratic statesman with years of experience, 8 as VP, that not enough want as president. wow.

Leaving bloomberg.
calm, experienced, willing to learn/listen/adapt.
can easily run a bureaucracy.
and hopefully do a fair enough job at foreign policy if he surrounds himself with smart people.

logistics, campaign finance, etc are not issues for him so his only focus is on making the numbers

every one of them has flaws and history. i dont care about any of it. or purity. i more or less accept them all at face value. any of them is way over trump’s head.

at the moment i think bloomberg can get it done and then do the job.

I do trust Bloomberg more than most since I don’t think he’s a fanatic and I think we need a President and not an ideologue. A lot will depend on South Carolina and I’m feeling good about SC for Joe. What it means for Big Tuesday, I don’t know yet. I do know this. I think Joe’s more likable than Bloomberg is and better at the retail politics stuff that could give him the edge. However, I do think Bloomberg is savvy at ads and I wouldn’t mind that against Trump.

I suspect today won’t be like the last two. Eventually you run out of panic.

Looks like a dead cat bounce. I am moving my retirement out of stocks completely by the end of the day. My friend the infectious disease doctor thinks Covid19 cannot be contained because patients are asymptomatic, spreading disease, until they realize that they are sick. Even a competent administration would have difficulty containing it in the US once it spreads in Europe, which it appears is happening now. I see no upside, and way too much downside.

Campaign finance laws prohibit that kind of coordination.

Bloomberg can support Democrats by attacking Trump with boosts to state and local candidates and attacking Trumpists across the nation.

But he can’t coordinate messaging and spending with the campaign the way that tweet seems to indicate.

What I’m saying is that in a group that skews old, where pretty much every case is likely being captured, “serious” cases are lower than would be expected. And non-serious cases wouldn’t be getting major support, or they’d be considered serious.

re: #376 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

If the 2020 race comes down to two rich old white guys from New York, that is going to depress voter turnout and that will most likely favor the GOP in the key states they have to win.

if all other things were equal and it was just ‘two rich old white guys from New York” this might be right.

for anyone with two brain cells, the political choice between trump and biden, sanders, bloomberg (the old white men) is not based on those three things.

and if the depress voter turnout that favors the GOP is also true, then

anyone who ends up evaluating the choice as two old white guys, and not that one is a full on sociopath and the other a somewhat flawed, above average organizer and administrator, knowing full well what might happen, then to be brutal, deserves the world they get:

- start with privatized Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid gone, as one example.

we’re in primary season
vote who you think can get it done
- trounce trump with a huge margin of victory
- be the president and fix some stuff given what happens to the senate.

in the general
vote blue, no matter who
even if it’s not your primary choice
even if it’s the rich old white guy from new york who’s light years better than the current moron

Group asks Congress to investigate how Devin Nunes is paying for his lawsuits

The complaint says Nunes appears to be in “blatant violation of House rules,” because he would have trouble paying for all these lawsuits solely from his congressional salary of $174,000 per year.

The group argues he’d only be able to pay if he received legal services for free, at a discounted rate, or based on a contingency fee, meaning the lawyer would get compensated from Nunes’ winnings if he prevails in his lawsuits.

In all of those cases, the complaint says, Nunes must disclose the legal help he is receiving by filing a legal expense fund, otherwise it would represent an illegal gift given to Nunes under congressional ethics rules.

Nunes has not filed a legal expense fund with the Office of Congressional Ethics.

Remember the religious right smearing the circuit court judge in the same sex marriage case? He was a Reagan appointee. Even as recently as eleven years ago, we had HW’s Souter on SCOTUS and Ford’s Stevens. The Trumpers want to act like if someone wasn’t appointed by Trump and isn’t on record thinking Trump is the best ever, that means that person is suspect and shouldn’t be in government. That’s dangerous. And that’s precisely why Trump needs to go. Yes, Trump’s policies that favor the very wealthy at the expense of the rest of us are awful but his attacks on democracy itself are an imminent threat.

No idea, but but there is no treatment for coronavirus infection, so I can’t imagine what special treatment would be available. I’m still struck by how few are rated “serious” compared to the Chinese numbers.

I have been thinking all along that Diamond Princess might provide the best way to estimate the true mortality rate; it’s the only place where the number of cases might be accurately determined and therefore total deaths/total cases may produce a good number. Every other place (and I’m especially looking at you Iran) has no way to capture the true incidence of the disease since most infections are mild and may never be reported.

We are not remotely ready for this nightmare. 2% lethality is millions of dead people here at home and hundreds of millions seriously ill. No medication coming in, no medication being made, no food being delivered, and no gasoline being delivered.

This would be the worst natural disaster in our history and one of the worst in human history if this holds true.

Yes, particularly since it seems to have an infection rate as near to 100 percent as to be a rounding error. And hangs around like nothing since smallpox.

And this was pre-Clyburn endorsement too. I dunno guys. Rumors of Joe’s demise may have been greatly exaggerated.

Being pedantic, but unfortunately, that panel didn’t hold up too well.

Because we all know that it’s now considered overrated-by-its-time and exploitative of First Nations, not informative and uplifting of them.

The infection rate I saw predicted for the US was in excess of 80%.

Which are neither of the things discussed in the panel. The panel is doing a pretty good job of portraying what white people would complain about.

I’d be a lot happier to nominate him if Beau were the surviving son rather than Hunter. That “I’m running for Senate” speech makes me worry that he’s only slightly more aware of the present than Emperor Palpatang is and I think that Beau could have served as an anchor to keep him focused on his advisors.

But I’ll certainly consider him less likely to be guaranteed to lose the white house in ‘24 than I do Bernie.

It was still one of the first movies to take Native Americans seriously as people with their own story and their own POV that does not depend on being an antagonist to a white American narrative.

First steps never get it all right, but they are necessary.

Also, on the left in that picture endorsing Biden is Joe Riley, former Charleston mayor (10 terms) and a really popular/influential SC Dem.

The running for Senate thing from what I have read was selectively edited to make it seem like he didn’t know what office he was running for and he instead was actually telling a story about his early runs for the Senate. I dunno. I just think so much of what Biden has actually been saying and doing has been twisted (not saying by you or anyone here) by people who have an agenda.

I hated it, so I’m one of the 3. :D :D

Read a review, maybe from The Times, that called it “Plays With Camera”.
Have called it that to this day.

And now, a video from my adopted hometown:

Video

The city district of Poruba, the subject of the short documentary, was intended to be the new city center - the original city center was slated to be torn down and given over to mining and steel manufacturing.

And yes, Kurnik šopa is indeed the coolest little pub in Ostrava.

I like the horse on the shield! What is the background of that, do you know?

re: #275 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

In America we still see life as a crap shoot and any attempt to collectivize or unionize is restricting our personal freedoms and ruining our individual chances of becoming billionaires.

Actually, viewing success as a crap shoot would be a step in the right direction. It would mean that people are waking up to the fact that they’re not in control of large parts of their lives, and might be more willing to interject some reason into the process.

Unfortunately, far too many people view it a and endlessly recursive moral litmus test, where being wealthy means you’re a better better than your lessors, because morally upright people are always successful, which means successful people are the the good people, which means…
