I told Mrs. FBW this morning that what Trump needed to do would be to hold a press conference, because you need it to come from the top. Then, he needed to say, “Good afternoon. I have here with me (list of peopel who know shit). They’ll be updating you on the current status of the COVID19 outbreak in the US and abroad. Please direct your questions to them.”

And then sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up, because he’d only make it worse. That’s what he SHOULD HAVE done.

BUT, I said, he won’t be able to do that because then somebody else would get all the attention.

Did I call it, or what?

Every time I have to do a presentation, I’m nervous as hell. I feel like my mind is running at 2-3 x normal rate, like my voice flutters, like I’m stammering and repeating myself, and like everyone can hear the anxiety in my voice and see it in my manner.

Pretty much the only public speaking I’ve done has been at the funerals of my three grandparents. All three were from stuff I wrote but I dread public speaking. Currently, Biden is up, and I’ll have to say he’s absolutely killing it on this interview. Looking forward to seeing how Warren fares as well.

I hope he keeps it up. He wasn’t even in my top three going in but I genuinely think he’s the best choice not just to beat Trump but to be POTUS.

Human beings have been giving viruses and bacteria a crash course in how to fuck us up for at least a hundred years, and their short life cycle means very fast evolution.

One disturbing bit of news that I heard on NPR ‘Science Friday’ last week: growers in Florida have been spraying their groves wholesale with antibiotics to fight citrus greening disease.

“In humans, the drugs, oxytetracycline and streptomycin, are used to treat pneumonia, syphilis and a broad array of infections. In 2016, the compounds were approved for emergency use on citrus trees in Florida, and in December, the agency expanded the use of oxytetracycline for orange groves across the country.”

re: #118 Teukka

And there’s this aspect too; it doesn’t work:

Critics are particularly galled because there is also little convincing evidence that spraying will keep the scourge at bay. The disease is transmitted by an invasive psyllid insect and moves through the vascular tissue under the tree’s bark, a circulatory system that is difficult to access. Emergency applications on citrus crops since 2016 have shown that the antibiotics can slow disease progression, allowing growers to eke a few more harvests out of infected trees. But the drugs do not eliminate greening.

We’ve had a lot of problems with overuse of antibiotics. Not just with plants, but with farm animals — instead of providing these animals decent living conditions, they are given antibiotics to ward off the diseases they develop because of the unhealthy living conditions they are provided to maximize profits. And then, of course, doctors prescribing antibiotics to fight viral infections, a task to which they are totally unsuited,

COVID-19 has the possibility of strongly affecting the coming election.

The elderly are particularly susceptible to succumbing to these virus sweeps.

If there are significant numbers of deaths in this country, the Trump administration is going to find it difficult to escape damnation.

Additionally, I notice that Trump, Biden, Sanders are rather elderly. They are not physically stopped yet from being mobile, but they are at an age where their immune system just isn’t going to be what it was when they were young.

I still believe that the death rate in China is due to both poor health practices as well as underreporting of actual infections. How many Chinese, if they exhibit cold-like symptoms, are going to actually be accounted in statistics? My guess that many Chinese in rural areas are just skipped.

Pence’s job isn’t to direct anything other than the damage control. He’s there to serve as a filter on the agencies responsible for responding to the pandemic, allowing through the happy-shit “All is well!” press releases while muzzling any reports on the actual state of the virus’ spread.

Unfortunately for the WH, this isn’t 1918 and so they can’t put the kibosh on every news story from state and local officials about new/spreading cases. So we’re going to end up with two voices: One from the WH assuring us that the virus is contained and America secure…and the other collective voice saying this shit is getting out of control and we need to start taking emergency measures.

Every time I have to do a presentation, I’m nervous as hell. I feel like my mind is running at 2-3 x normal rate, like my voice flutters, like I’m stammering and repeating myself, and like everyone can hear the anxiety in my voice and see it in my manner.

But, according to multiple folks who have seen me give presentations, I come across as “relaxed and knowledgeable”.

I have no idea how I manage to do that.

May not be the same for you, but I tend to find that, when I can’t avoid public speaking outright, my inherent nervousness tend to make me over-prepare. A LOT.

So, while the people listening to me think I’m bringing up good points and structuring my argument well, my interior monologue is going, “Wait! If you drive an expensive car you’re probably a jerk, scientists say

The science is looking pretty unanimous on this one: Drivers of expensive cars are the worst.

A new study has found that drivers of flashy vehicles are less likely to stop and allow pedestrians to cross the road — with the likelihood they’ll slow down decreasing by 3% for every extra $1,000 that their vehicle is worth.
Tesla and regulators need to do more to prevent Autopilot deaths, safety agency says
Tesla and regulators need to do more to prevent Autopilot deaths, safety agency says
Researchers from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas speculated that the expensive car owners “felt a sense of superiority over other road users” and were less able to empathize with lowly sidewalk-dwellers.
They came to this conclusion after asking volunteers to cross a sidewalk hundreds of times, filming and analyzing the responses by car drivers.

If I ever take to driving my Rolls-Royce on a regular basis, I will retrofit it with peasant-sighting staffs on the fenders and a large cow-catcher, er brush guard, on the grill to push careless Hondas out of the way. Some of those James Bond Aston-Martin features might also be useful, especially those nifty disk-blade hubcaps. One idea I invented myself was a retractable catapult in the trunk, er boot, that would rise up and hurl fresh cow-pies at pickups, SUVs and other bumpkin-transport that dares to follow too closely. I don’t have a working model yet but I don’t foresee any insurmountable challenges. I even considered adapting airport runway lights to the headlight high beam position to vaporize inconsiderate road-louts who will not dim their own lights. That probably isn’t legal in Texas though.

If the case had been in Shasta County rather than Solano County, I would have picked out a certain church in Redding as the originating point. But, I’d be asking if the sick person goes to church and where. I am not saying the sick person is a member of the Korean Shincheonji. I am saying that if they go to a big church, the chances of being around someone else who had been sick or out of the country is higher.

On the Japan front, the Minister of Sports has hinted broadly to the Sumo Association that it ought to change the Osaka basho (which begins Sunday, March 8). The options are: holding the matches without spectators and showing them on NHK, postponing the matches or cancelling altogether. You will notice that “hold the matches with no changes” is NOT among the options presented. The Sumo Association meets on Sunday to discuss what it is going to do. I’d note that the Sumo Association is even more sclerotic (rigid, unresponsive) than the Japanese government, so I could see these old guys (they’re all guys) not taking the hint and throwing caution to the wind.

Eek:

Japanese woman confirmed as coronavirus case for 2nd time, weeks after initial recovery

A woman working as a tour-bus guide in Japan tested positive for the coronavirus for a second time, Osaka’s prefectural government said on Wednesday, the first person in the country to do so amid growing concerns about the spread of the infection.

The second positive test comes as the number of confirmed cases in Japan rose to 186 by Thursday from around 170 the day before. Tokyo has urged big gatherings and sports events be scrapped or curtailed for two weeks to contain the virus while pledging the 2020 Olympic Games will still go ahead in the city.

The 186 cases reported by Japan’s health ministry are separate from 704 reported from an outbreak on a cruise liner that was quarantined off Tokyo earlier this month. A total of seven people have died, including four from the ship.

The woman, a resident of Osaka in western Japan, tested positive on Wednesday after developing a sore throat and chest pains, the prefectural government said in a statement, describing her as being in her forties. She first tested positive in late January and was discharged from the hospital after recovering on Feb. 1, according to the statement.

The health ministry confirmed the case was the first in Japan where a patient tested positive for coronavirus for a second time after being discharged from hospital, the Nikkei newspaper said.

Though a first in Japan, cases of second positive tests have been reported in China, where the disease originated late last year. The outbreak has spread rapidly and widely, infecting about 80,000 people globally and killing nearly 2,800, the vast majority in mainland China.

“Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant and with minimal symptoms, and then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs,” said Philip Tierno Jr., Professor of Microbiology and Pathology at NYU School of Medicine.

He said much remains unknown about the virus. “I’m not certain that this is not bi-phasic, like anthrax,” he said, meaning the disease appears to go away before recurring.

My personal prediction? As the number of cases starts to rise, the wingnuts ramp up the “DEMS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS!” propaganda by actually accusing Trump’s enemies of deliberately going out and getting themselves infected in order to spread the virus beyond containment.

Saudi Arabia says it has temporarily suspended entry for individuals aiming to perform Umrah pilgrimage or to visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina over concerns of the spread of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia tweeted early Thursday that the temporary suspension of Umrah is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the new disease.

Seems like a big deal.

Our President’s attitude toward expertise is chilling, especially medical expertise. He is absolute evil but unfortunately he is not the only one who measures everything in money and lives of others are irrelevant to him. If we escape disaster here because the pandemic doesn’t materialize, it won’t be due to any action he’s taken. It will be pure luck. And he will use that escape to justify his attack on the government medical institutions. I remember reading years ago that he was a fan of Ayn Rand — and this would certainly fit in with her toxic philosophy.

We’re in a period of transition. My grandparents generation is dying off. While that generation was far from perfect, a lot of what bugs me comes from the idea generations can’t learn from each other or that history and its impacts on the present should be ignored. I listened to Rep Clyburn talk about his wife today. This man and his wife were part of the Civil Rights struggle. I am reminded that Emmett Till was the same age as one of my aunts and his senseless murder happened in my father’s life. I am then reminded that public officials in some states still try to get out of performing interracial marriages. The Cold War also has become a more distant memory too. I don’t think it’s hard to say both we and the Soviets did terrible things in the name of our ideologies.

Amazon merchants curb ad spending and hike prices as coronavirus threatens orders

SOME Amazon merchants spooked by the coronavirus fallout are curtailing their ad spending, several report.

In particular, small sellers are buying fewer ads on the site to reduce demand in the event of supply disruptions. And they are starting to raise prices too.

“If we’re going to run out, why not run out at full price,” said Chuck Gregorich, who sells China-made patio furniture on amazon.com. “We have to make sure the sales we have are as profitable as they can be.”

He expects to lose as much as $2m (€1.8m) in sales this year due to factory closures and other coronavirus-related slowdowns.

The sudden shift in sales tactics by merchants like Mr Gregorich threatens Amazon’s fastest-growing and profitable revenue source. Amazon merchants spent about 6pc less on advertising over the past two weeks than they did a year ago, says Daniel Knijnik, who runs Quartile Digital, a New York firm that helps manage Amazon advertising for 2,300 brands selling goods on the site.

ckkatz  Feb 26, 2020 • 11:29:51pm

Phew… Just caught up with the last few threads.

With apologies to Ms Hecuba’s Daughter, let me add a few thoughts to the question of preparation…

First, a horror ceiling is in order.

From what I understand, likely essential services will continue. These include electricity, natural gas, water, sewage. Other service _might_ have a few delays such as mail and gasoline stations.

Second, so what to prepare for…

There have been a few articles on the grocery store and merchandise supply chain facing some dislocation.

Certainly, this seems to happen in Northern Virginia whenever a dusting of snow is forecast. As far as I can tell, there is some sort of county requirement that everybody congregate in the nearest grocery store and recite the snow mantra “Bread, Milk, Toilet Paper”.

It seems to me that the goal is to have enough supplies to comfortably continue to live one’s life and last out any dislocations in the supply chain. The usual goal is to aim for about 2 to 4 weeks of one’s normal everyday supplies for a start. Assuming of course that one has the space and budget.

The optimum, from what I have read, is a 90 day supply of household needs. But that takes a lot of space, budget, and management.

Additional items might include critical prescriptions and medicines, a supply of hand sanitizer and perhaps some sort personal comfort item, like chocolate.

If you are out of ideas, instant oatmeal with dried fruits like raisins; rice and beans; soups; and sides like Knorr’s pastas and rice dishes to which you can add canned meat, such as chicken.

A couple of years ago a lizard posted a very nice recipe for Hoppin’ John that would work well.

As an aside, my father served in the European Theater in the American Army during World War 2. After the war he was posted to Germany as part of the US Army of Occupation. He and some other officers hired an Italian refugee as cook and housekeeper for their billet. One of her major qualifications was that she knew well over 50 ways to prepare spam.

Interestingly, my Grandfather was part of the US Army of Occupation of Germany after World War 1. His favorite story was about how his friend, an Ojibwa from Wisconsin got drunk and disappeared one day. Everybody went looking for him. They found him in a manure pile. Apparently he had aggravated the local villagers so severely while drunk, that they carried him over to it and dumped him in.

When I get a chance, I’ll post a few links that may offer some ideas. At the moment, my cat is demanding to know why I am not paying attention to her.

The latest statistics do not show a significant increase over the past day in either total number of new infections nor deaths. It’s certainly possible that this time, as with SARS and MERS, we’re avoiding a pandemic that will devastate the economy or lead to massive number of infections. Trump has deliberately undermined our ability to face a pandemic and he is inflicting permanent damage on the CDC, but it seems that once again his malfeasance can continue unchecked and it won’t be until the big one really hits that we will discover how unprepared we are in facing such a crisis, because all our defenses have been eliminated.

All schools in Japan will be closed effective March 2nd.

Via Google Translate:

Following the spread of the new coronavirus, Prime Minister Abe will be headquarters at the government’s headquarters at 6:00 pm shortly afternoon, starting from next month until spring breaks for all elementary and junior high schools and high schools nationwide. He stated that he would request a temporary closure. He instructed him to urgently prepare the necessary bills to control the spread of infection and minimize its impact on people’s lives and the economy.

The government opened a headquarters for countermeasures against the new coronavirus at the prime minister’s office at 6:00 pm on the 27th.

Prime Minister Abe noted that temporary closure of elementary and junior high schools has been taken in Hokkaido and Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, and said, “Efforts have been made to prevent the spread of infection to children in each region. But the last week or two is a very important time. “

He said, “First and foremost, put children’s health and safety first and prepare for the risk of large-scale infections caused by many children and teachers gathering for long hours on a daily basis.” Expressed his intention to request that elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools and special needs schools be temporarily closed until spring break.

Reading in local news that Ostrava Public Transport will disinfect all vehicles (trams, buses, trolleybuses, etc.) because of COVID-19 concerns; they began doing so overnight. Czech Railways will begin doing the same this weekend (travel is typically lighter on the weekends here).

there was a case of an infected soldier being pulled off a train near Koblenz, Germany, that is going to scare people away from train travel.

I am already concerned for my summer tourguiding schedule: I have over 40 ship-based tours lined up, but who wants to risk being quarantined on a cruise ship overseas? I suspect that many of them will cancel soon.

I just had a tour cancelled, it was in connection with a major trade fair in Frankfurt, which was also cancelled.

And that was not so much out of concerns about spreading virus but concerns about being able to deliver the products they were planning to launch at the trade fair.

Everytime you use the restroom, wash your hands while singing “Happy Birthday To You” twice.

Then go grab the doorhandle that the last X people who didn’t wash THEIR hands touched, to get out of the restroom.

I never, ever do this. If I can’t find a way to open the door without using my bare hands, I’ll grab the handle with my teeth. Then, when I return to my desk, it’s a couple shots of Jack Daniels Green, which is technically a mouthwash, even if you swallow it.

The thing about this particular chapter in Trump’s miserable track record of conning his marks is that for the first time they face an existential threat for real- not a manufactured brown-skinned people hating wall building variety, or one of gun grabbing commie hippies coming for their (often theoretical) well-deserved 2nd mansions.

Fear has been Trump’s con all along and this time fear is his achilles heel as his base support knows they are in the highest risk pool to get sick and die. This means more scrutiny placed upon Trump as well as blame as people and their families fall victim. Poor government policy and defunding services that help fight these sorts of pandemics will be his legacy and there is nothing Trump can do to separate himself from his actions because he himself built the tower of Fear. It will fall down upon him.

We’ve had a lot of problems with overuse of antibiotics. Not just with plants, but with farm animals — instead of providing these animals decent living conditions, they are given antibiotics to ward off the diseases they develop because of the unhealthy living conditions they are provided to maximize profits. And then, of course, doctors prescribing antibiotics to fight viral infections, a task to which they are totally unsuited,

it isn’t the unhealthy living conditions. it’s that cows aren’t designed to eat grain, but we stuff them with grain because it’s cheaper than letting them graze. so their stomachs become breeding grounds for all kinds of crap that then has to be warded off with antibiotics. See? I still remember Omnivore’s Dilemma, which I last taught 20 years ago!

Biden will survive. Sanders and Trump, dead on arrival.

The Borowitz Report:
PUTIN DENIES MITCH MCCONNELL IS RUSSIAN ASSET: “HE HAS NEVER BEEN AN ASSET TO ANY COUNTRY”

Pushing back against charges that Senator Mitch McConnell is a Russian asset, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, said on Tuesday that McConnell “has never been an asset to any country.”

“You can scour the four corners of the globe, and you will not find a nation that would ever in a million years consider Mitch McConnell an asset,” Putin said.

The Russian President urged pundits who have called McConnell a Russian asset “to look up the word ‘asset’ in the dictionary.”

“You will find that ‘asset’ means a useful or valuable thing,” Putin said. “The only part of that definition that fits McConnell is ‘thing.’ “

Pressing his case further, he said that it was debatable whether McConnell was even an asset to his home state of Kentucky. “Maybe compared to Rand Paul he is, but that’s setting the bar ludicrously low,” he said.

Thing is that a disease with 60% mortality rate may infect small numbers but burn out because it’s easy to identify and contain.

A disease that is virtually indistinguishable from a common cold or flu until requiring hospitalization is far more difficult to contain. The mortality rate may be far higher than influenza, which kills hundreds of thousands worldwide every year. If this new disease infects a similar number of people as the flu in a given year, it could result in hundreds of thousands of deaths in the US alone.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Guess Trump’s presser didn’t calm markets or nerves. Picking Pence didn’t give anyone confidence that Trumpworld knows what it’s doing.

Market futures all pointing lower - and put the market on pace to be in correction territory after the selloff earlier this week.

A correction is 10% decline from highs.

The market futures suggest that the markets will open with more than 10% decline so far this week. And economic data isn’t going to help, as the govt released that the 4Q2019 economic growth was 2.1%, again showing that the economy isn’t juiced from Trump/GOP tax cuts, and that Trump’s trade war continues having an effect.

Ironically polling shows that the second choice of many Biden supporters is Bernie Sanders. Not surprising, because the two of them have the highest name recognition in the field, and that is all the info a lot of voters base their decisions on.

I’m ok with however it shakes out because the process leaves a clear winner and less ‘gaming’ of the system

As to motivations, I always say I don’t care who you vote for I care how you decide who to vote for. This is where you change minds

In fairness, though there is no reason to be fair to Trump, even if we had a competent President the market would likely be crashing because there is no way to get a vaccine developed in less than a year, and the pandemic in China alone is likely to cause economic disruptions.

The markets might not be nearly as volatile with a competent administration; manage the risks better. A better communicator of those risks. A calm president would urge people to be careful, and adjust their expectations during this kind of crisis.

Trump’s not doing any of that. He’s in full on denial and avoidance mode and his howlers are busy claiming a conspiracy is afoot.

The bubble here is Corporate Debt. All the big businesses have been unable or unwilling to invest in new products or higher salaries for workers, so they’ve been artificially boosting their stocks prices by borrowing money and doing “Stock buy-backs.”

Basically, using a credit card to boost their checking account.

When the revenues start to slip, they’ll miss payments. And then the banks start getting shifty again…

[Embedded content]

The market futures suggest that the markets will open with more than 10% decline so far this week. And economic data isn’t going to help, as the govt released that the 4Q2019 economic growth was 2.1%, again showing that the economy isn’t juiced from Trump/GOP tax cuts, and that Trump’s trade war continues having an effect.

It’s going to be a wild, roller coaster ride on the market today. I wouldn’t be surprised with a 1,000 point loss, or a 100 point loss at the closing bell. Currently down 675.

Also another President would not make such a personal issue about the performance of the Dow Jones and insist that he is the sole reason it had been increasing.

Trump’s ego is entirely bound to stock market performance, and watching the markets gyrate and go into freefall because Trump’s policies and statements are making the situation worse isn’t going to help Trump deal with the crisis.

Other presidents would warn that the markets might be volatile, but the interest of govt is keeping people safe. That would help stabilize things, but Trump’s more interested in making sure the markets rise since he’s bound himself to how the markets do as a proxy for how he does (only when the markets are good - it’s always someone else’s fault when the markets decline).

There’s a lot of qualified African-American women for the position. I can think of three right now: Harris, Abrams, and Demmings. And I know exactly who he was talking about when he said when we need an African-American woman on SCOTUS.

re: #338 #thegreatpoolpondconversion (dangerman)

I’m ok with however it shakes out because the process leaves a clear winner and less ‘gaming’ of the system

As to motivations, I always say I don’t care who you vote for I care how you decide who to vote for. This is where you change minds

to follow up:

the way many voters make voting decisions is not based on policies, on identifying one’s obvious needs and seeing which candidate matches those needs.

it’s not even based on a logical evaluation of candidates statements and/or behavior.

It is all based on affinity and identity. voting is no longer about politics and governance; it is about the expression of voter identity in political terms.

Republicans can’t run on the truth about their goals because their goals are summed up as making the rich richer and repealed everything related to the New Deal.

so republicans cheat. and when they cheat they are cheating you - whoever ‘you’ are - all of you, all of us, except the mega wealthy.

You are being used and mocked at the same time.

EVERY Trump voter made the same Faustian bargain. Wealthy, ‘fiscally conservative moderates’ sacrificed their reputations and dignity. they traded social justice, the planet, their daughter’s rights, international relations, safe gun policy, the health care of millions and more for their own tax cut. The struggling, white middle class traded it all for a fictional job promise. they all debased themselves and their country to maintain control of the Supreme Court.

every single day that bargain gets worse - what seemed like a temporary political compromise is becoming an indelible moral stain.

This isn’t good: there’s indications that you do not get immunity to coronavirus even after being infected once. There’s a case in Japan where a woman apparently was diagnosed with the disease two separate times.

If people can’t retain immunity for prolonged periods of time, it likely means that the disease will continue to spread among the population unlike with the flu where you are considered immune to that variant once you’ve had it. It’s acting like the common cold (which you can get over and over again).

The Arrogance of Michael Bloomberg He thought none of his stances would matter if he just spent enough money. Martin Longman, Washington Monthly

Yet, Bloomberg somehow thinks he’s a good fit for this party and this time. Any objective observer would disabuse him of that notion, but he believes he can just overcome dissent with money. I don’t know what offends me the most, the idea that his ambition should cancel out the values of the Democratic Party or the idea that people are so suggestible that paid advertising can cause them to abandon their principles.

Bloomberg has always treated party affiliation (whether Republican, Democratic, or independent) as a matter of strategy rather than principle. Now he appears to believe that he’s the only person who can beat Trump and that he can simply spend the other candidates out of contention and Trump out of office.

It might have worked for Bloomberg if he didn’t have such a public record of being terrible on the things that matter to the left, but it was the height of arrogance for him to think that none of that would matter.

Other presidents would talk about federal funding for testing, for treating the uninsured, for quarantine and other pro-active public health measures…. once the hospitals, pharmaceutical factories, glove and mask factories, etc, realize they’re getting no-bid massive purchase orders, their stock would go up enough to provide some counterweight to the companies whose just-in-time supply chains have their share prices dropping.

Honestly, I’d hate a brokered convention but when Trump has directly asked his supporters to interfere in the Democratic primary, it may not be the worst thing possible. However, I’m hoping Biden wipes the floor Saturday and begins a comeback. I really do think he’s the best candidate right now. I know I’m in the minority here as a lot like Warren and I genuinely respect your opinion because ideologically I’m closer to Warren than I am Biden. However, as someone in an increasingly blue state governed by a moderate Democrat, I have seen the positives that come with a capable executive and legislative majority.

Just a thought: Brokered conventions weren’t a problem until the CRA passed. Then the Democrats divided into whites who don’t like minorities and whites who wanted change for everyone, and that fight took place at the 68 convention.

Yes, I recall that there was a big push starting in the 60’s to make primaries more democratic and transparent.

The Arrogance of Michael Bloomberg He thought none of his stances would matter if he just spent enough money. Martin Longman, Washington Monthly

It might have worked for Bloomberg if he didn’t have such a public record of being terrible on the things that matter to the left, but it was the height of arrogance for him to think that none of that would matter.

Yeah, okay, he has a public record of being terrible on a couple of things that matter to the left.

He also has a public record being exceedingly wonderful on some other things that matter to the left.

My biggest beefs with Bloomberg is that his party affiliation is based on expediency, like a certain senator from Vermont, and that he thinks he can buy his way in. If we had a rational nomination system, he wouldn’t be able to.

I can’t get denied coverage because of my heart condition anymore. Is ACA perfect? Nah but can we build on it and improve, hell fucking yeah. Unaware and incapable of remembering back to the pre-ACA days. Purposefully obtuse.

The GOP has spent the last decade undermining the PPACA (aka ACA aka Obamacare). Trump and GOP are currently in federal courts seeking to invalidate the entirety of the law, after their repeated failures to repeal it legislatively.

They’ve curbed the expansion. They’ve fought to eliminate the individual mandate that funds this. They fought to eliminate the medical device tax.

Everything they’ve done is about limiting access to coverage and rolling back the expanded options under Obamacare - including the protection for those with preexisting conditions.

And, towards the end of the article

“… Opponents of transgender service members have argued that their medical and psychological needs degrade readiness and unit cohesion ― particularly if they are diagnosed with gender dysphoria, a type of anxiety associated with feeling one’s mind doesn’t match one’s body.

A similar argument propped up the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on homosexual troops until 2011, though research post-integration has shown no measurable differences.

“For example, a study published just over one year after the repeal of DADT found no overall negative impact from the repeal on morale, retention, unit cohesion or readiness to serve, and instead found that the repeal enhanced the military’s capacity to pursue its missions,” according to The Palm Center, citing research published in the journal Armed Forces & Society.

That study found that being able to openly serve, without the pressure to hide identities, improved morale among troops and their units. …”

The market’s climbing out of its hole. It’s down 360 now. The question that people need to be asking is how much the government is borrowing to buy stocks to change the direction of the market.

This is typical market behavior. Once it drops to a certain point programmed trading will start seeing value and then buy.

i realize this is a primary so to an extent it’s now bloomberg vs old bloomberg

here’s what i posted yesterday:

list the issues a Bloomberg presidency will be better for than another 4 years of Trump: tax distribution, health care, guns, climate change, Supreme Court nominees, border walls, LGBTQ rights (despite his personal expression of opinion, yes i do believe his policy responses will be so much better).

Unless you believe Bloomberg is the same pathological liar about every single thing that Trump is, then on every issue, every consequence, he’d be better.

that’s the only metric that matters

Not a really good look.

I’m not both-sidesing him v other candidates, I’m both sides-ing his good record and his bad one.

Yeah, stop & frisk was a real thing that actually happened, and he said what he said. And his rhetoric to and about women in the workplace was very 1980’s. There’s a certain amount of demerits due him for those.

But he’s also had extensive real achievements on climate change, guns and health care. Nationally. And he’s consistently said exactly what D’s would want a candidate to say about immigration and reproductive choice and taxes (although his achievements in those last three are local only, it hasn’t been part of his national activism).

I’m not calling him perfect. I’m saying we could do a lot worse. And nominating Bernie would be worse — landslide loss in the general, plus his anti-coattails for House and Senate races.

If the ACA gets trashed without a reasonable replacement I am simply screwed. I’m semi-retired in my mid-50s and thus multiple years from Medicare (and presumably on the heels of killing ACA they trash that too.) I am in the pre-existing condition/high-risk pool for multiple reasons. And though I have savings, it’s not going to handle buying so-so coverage at 4+ times what I am currently paying.

It’s not just the restaurant industry, it’s pretty much all service industry jobs looking at a labor shortage because (wait for it) people don’t want to work jobs that pay shit wages and subject them to constant abuse by employer and customer alike. So instead of tackling either of those barriers to full staffing, they instead decide to further shrink their manpower needs through increased automation.

(This, of course, in the point in the conversation where the wingnut being argued with whines that “burger flippers” are already overpaid for something that’s supposed to be an “entry level job,” so if a machine is what it takes to ensure they can still harden their arteries with “cheap” burgers, then so be it.)

My guess is that peacocks can’t really fare as well in the wild as pheasant or turkey. So they got picked off in the wild fairly soon afterwards. Though I expect they could sort of fit in the turkey niche since flight is sufficient to get them up into the lower branches of trees at night to roost or otherwise avoid ground predators. (I’ve seen turkeys do this when startled by a cat.)

And my Republican relatives in South Carolina will all vote for Bernie on Saturday…
