Got CL’d just after writing:

Here’s hoping my brethren in the Tar Heel state will give Biden an early call at 7:30. Kind of weird being in the midst of Trump World here in Western NC. We had no signs out for the presidential primary, or for any Democrats running in a statewide primary. Gotta believe that has been vastly different in the big cities and Asheville, the lone Democratic enclave in the western part of the Tar Heel state.

It’s why supermarkets are actually listed just after hospitals and police stations as places to avoid in a zombie apocalypse according to The Zombie Survival Guide. Not only is it likely to be jam-packed with panicking morons in the event of an outbreak, but most generally have a lot of glass windows to highlight the food inside…which is what you become to the walking dead in a zombie apocalypse.

There were some objections downstairs to Nicole Wallace possibly taking over Hardball, given her past history as a Republican operative. But unlike some of the other Republicans that MSNBC/NBC has tried — Hugh Hewitt, Greta van Susteren, Megyn Kelly — in this age of Trump, she has shown herself to be a thoughtful host and analyst. I certainly would not object to her getting this chance. Of course, it would also be nice if Melissa Harris-Perry were brought back to host the show.

98

It’s gotta be a pretty depressing mood at Bernie HQ right now. So far, only one state has been called for him, while two of the states called for Biden show him totally crushing the vote. Worse, those results show that Bernie’s “outreach” to black voters has fallen on deaf ears. About the only thing it looks like he’ll be able to celebrate tonight is taking California and even that might be disappointing if he can’t close out Biden.

re: #98 Targetpractice

It’s gotta be a pretty depressing mood at Bernie HQ right now. So far, only one state has been called for him, while two of the states called for Biden show him totally crushing the vote. Worse, those results show that Bernie’s “outreach” to black voters has fallen on deaf ears. About the only thing it looks like he’ll be able to celebrate tonight is taking California and even that might be disappointing if he can’t close out Biden.

And he won’t be able to celebrate that tonight because it takes a looong time for California to count the vote.

It’s been a hell of a (checks calendar) 3 days.

[Embedded content]

Friday night, the talk was all about how Bernie might surprise in SC and Biden’s firewall might fail.

Saturday night, the talk was about how the crowded moderate “lane” meant Bernie might still do awesome on Tuesday and take an insurmountable lead.

And the following two nights were all about the chaos that a consolidated moderate field meant for the polls.

That’s how quickly a primary season can go from “[insert candidate] is a lock for the nomination!” to “[same candidate] is pretty much out of the race after tonight!”

from Nate Silver on 538:

I think the Biden momentum narrative is overrated until we get more results from Texas and California. At the same time … there are a lot of theoretically Sanders-friendly states that have looked closer than you’d think based on early results, like Massachusetts and Maine. A Texas win coupled with his big margins in the rest of the South could also be a good scenario for Biden. So there’s just a liiiiiiitttle bit of a feeling of Election Night 2016, where we’re sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Maybe, anyway.

Election nights are long affairs, Micah, and resolutions are made to be broken. The thing for is, if Biden wins places like Massachusetts or Maine or Minnesota, plus all the states he’s supposed to win, that starts to look like a pretty bad night for Sanders, even if Sanders holds on by 2 points in Texas or something because early voting saved him.

198
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Mar 3, 2020 • 6:06:15pm

Bronner over at 538:

According to preliminary exit polls, Sanders is doing quite well among Latinos in Texas — though not quite as well as he did among Latinos in Nevada, where he garnered 50 percent in a more crowded field. But the share of the Democratic electorate that is Latinx didn’t increase since 2016 — maybe because Texas has open primaries and the Republican primary isn’t particularly interesting this year, so Republicans may be casting ballots in the Democratic race — so we don’t yet know whether Latino turnout will be high enough to help Sanders win the state. And like in other Southern states, Biden is doing very well among black voters, who make up 20 percent of the Texas Democratic electorate. (In fact, Biden’s lead among black Texan voters is larger than Sanders’s lead among Latinos.)

She seems to sidestep the obvious - that the Republicans who are voting in the Democratic primary may be voting for Bernie.

If ratfucking Republicans are going to vote for any Democrat, it will be Bernie.

Agree. And if elected, Joe Biden would be 83 years old on Inauguration Day in 2025 (born 11/30/1942): serving one term (and doing his damnedest to secure a solid Dem base for the 2024 election) will likely dispose of the “age issue” going in.

re: #193 gocart mozart.

Y’know, I kind of think Stoller is half-right here: if Biden beats Trump, the Republicans probably will become the “Party of the Working Class”. Except that the Democrats, far from being a “wealthy rump”, will actually be The Party Of Everybody Else. Since if it entails conflating “working class” with “prejudiced obsessive right-wingers” , it’s far more likely that THEY, not the Democrats, are going to end up (appropriately) as the “rump”…

The problem with a homegrown test is lack of validation - false negative rate? False positive rate? detection level? Reproducibility? All these things CAN BE established, but it takes experimentation and then somebody has to review the results to make sure. Yeah, it sounds like a pain, but imagine the deployment of a test with a 30% false negative rate, or one with too high a threshold of detection.

If I had to guess, I’d say a combination of hubris - “We’ll have it fixed any day now!” and not wanting to review dozens of homebrew test kit validation data.

Since California is the big prize today, one thing we need to remember: there will be very many mail-in ballots and the final vote counts won’t be for a month.

So delegate totals will be provisional even by tomorrow morning.

Understandable. But there is one person left in the field who can win PA, MI, FL, NC, WI, AZ, IA, and OH, it is Biden. He’s not perfect. But he would be a return to normalcy to quote a thoroughly corrupt GOP president from the 1920s. In Biden’s case, it would be normalcy, He seems to be a decent - human - person. And that is what we so desperately need.

If I had to guess, I’d say a combination of hubris - “We’ll have it fixed any day now!” and not wanting to review dozens of homebrew test kit validation data.

While not wanting to “run out of test kits” so they made the criteria strict as a bottleneck.

That makes total sense, in a dystopian kind of way.

That was the independent Republic of Samoa (formerly Western and British Samoa). American Samoa is smaller and about 60 miles east. Very interesting history from the 1918 flu pandemic there. The Spanish Flu Outbreak of 1918: A Tale of Two Samoas

In Western Samoa, the colonial administration was late in instituting a quarantine. The flu ran wild and killed 22% of the population, making it one of the hardest hit territories in the world. American Samoa, just 60 miles away, did not report a single death, thanks to a comprehensive quarantine instituted by the governor, Commander John Martin Poyer. (The US Navy ran the smaller Pacific island territories in those days).

And that is what we so desperately need.

As a country, we need many things. A return to normalcy is one, but that normalcy is also a normalcy that elected Donald fucking Trump as God-Emperor of the United States of America. What we really need is a correction.

Biden is a better human being than many. There is no question that any Democrat and any Democratic administration would be an improvement over the crime family that squats in Washington. But he is yet another septuagenarian white man, who will not hold Republicans accountable for their crimes. America will simply pretend that all the war crimes, concentration camps, bribery, corruption, and plunder of public treasure were regrettable, but only to be expected when we dared to try to put a woman in charge.

America’s original mistake was pretending that treason and rebellion was worth ignoring for the sake of ‘healing’ and ‘coming together’. Now the sons and daughters of that postbellum legacy preach genocide and murder in the streets. Now their God-Emperor bumbles his way through the White House and steals your money while visibly sinking into dementia before our eyes, and yet we want to return to ‘normalcy’ so we can forgive.

Have you met Roger Stone’s personal friend Jesus Christ? He already loves you, even if you don’t know it. He wants to meet you. In fact, if you have some time later and don’t mind Roger maybe threatening to kill your dog at some point in the conversation if you don’t lie to Congress for him in order to protect Donald Trump, Roger might introduce you to his friend, who is Christ.

Stone explained his new convenient friendship saving faith in Jesus on the Axios HBO program, which exists:

(video, 0:38)

“I feel pretty good because I’ve taken Jesus Christ as my personal savior,” Stone said in his first on-camera interview since his sentencing. “And it’s given me enormous strength and solace, because he knows what’s in my heart.” […]

“Christians believe deeply in redemption,” Stone said. “So it’s not whether you’ve sinned. … It’s what’s in your heart today — where you stand with God today.”

Man, did I ever predict the MN vote wrong. I thought Mpls was going to go for Bernie and St. Paul for Biden, but it’s just the opposite. It’s annoying to me that my county is going to be one of just a few MN counties where Bernie won. Only 10% of the Ramsey County vote is in so maybe it will change.

Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Kodos  Mar 3, 2020 • 8:11:32pm

Finally got home from voting - and a true adventure it was. As promised, I have pictures!
Pictures are hidden, because they’re pretty big.

First image here is from when I first arrived at the polling place. As you can tell, there’s already a pretty long line waiting for me, and this is just the outside queue. Another 75-100 are in line inside the building as well.

Waiting line outside at arrival (6PM)

Second one comes from after an hour of waiting, when the polls officially closed. Since everyone was already in line, they brought everyone inside, where we continued to wait. At this time I still had a good 100 people in front of me, and this image is for the folks who showed up after I did:

Polls Closed.

Finally, we have what I will call the money shot. The reason behind the wait. There’s no candy-coating on this one, but for the HUNDREDS of people queued in line in what is considered a “leans-left” precinct, not at all considered hardcore Democratic by any means we have five voting booths.

Five.

Can you say Voter Disenfranchisement 101?
Sorry for the bad quality image here, but there’s laws on the books against taking closeup photographs of the voting area - which I can fully understand, so had to do it from a distance and kind of stealthily.

Voting Area - Five Booths.

An aside - the poor two souls who were working the registration were literally there since 4AM - and likely won’t get out of there before midnight.

I agree, the turnout is astounding and incredibly encouraging.

Here’s my hope: Biden knows that a great running mate helped carry Obama to victory — one relatively unknown but amazing up-and-comer and a comfortable known low risk running mate. So…he has to make a dynamic pick to further energize the party — Abrams or Harris would be my dream.

I still have my ballot—unmarked—for the Arizona primary. I remember in 2008, I voted for Hillary Clinton because I wanted to vote for at least one woman as president in my lifetime. In 2020, I want to vote for Elizabeth Warren because I think she is the best candidate and this even though I know she has probably got a plan to break up my evil too big to fail employer. But I don’t know what to do—I’m going to be blunt—I absolutely do not want Bernie as the candidate. I have qualms about Biden, but it would be a return to normalcy. Ugh. Decisions, decisions.

No way in hell they can call Texas yet. There’s thousands of votes out in major metropolitan areas that would likely swing for Biden - Dallas is about 30% counted, San Antonio and Houston are both still at 0% in.

Between the lack of voting booths and the new ballots they are starting to use that actually have a paper trail (you vote on the machine, it spits out a paper receipt that shows all votes cast, and feed that receipt into the tabulator machine to be counted after everyone is done - We’ll be lucky if we get a winner announced before midnight.

I had plenty of qualms about Biden too - namely, the fear he was naively or willfully ignoring how horrid GOPers had become, and wouldn’t hold them accountable for their crimes and corruption. This answer he gave in the CNN Townhall provided some reassurance, however - note how he initially responds to the question, acknowledging that, far from being absurd, it makes perfect sense at this time in US history:

I also suspect that the whole don’t-even-bother-with-witnesses fiasco in the Senate served as a reality check for him.

Yep, difference between Bernie and Joe has dropped from about 30K votes to below 20K in just a few minutes. Harris county (Houston) looks like it just dropped in quite a few of the votes.

I think Joe has a fair shot of winning here, which is absolutely fascinating as his Texas ground game was basically non-existent before the South Carolina primary, and one of the counties that hasn’t been counted yet is El Paso County (aka Beto Country - and we all know who he endorsed).
