Intense.

Amazing to remember that Iggy Pop started his career as an extreme punk known for rolling around bare-chested in broken glass on stage.

Lyrics:

We are the people without land
We are the people without tradition
We are the people
Who do not know how to die peacefully and at ease
We are the thoughts of sorrows
Endings of tomorrows
We are the wisps of rulers
And the jokers of kings
We are the people without right
We are the people who have known only lies and desperation
We are the people without a country, a voice, or a mirror
We are the crystal gaze
Returned through the density and immensity of a berserk nation
We are the victims of the untold manifesto of the lack of depth
Of full and heavy emptiness
We are the people without sorrow
Who have moved beyond national pride and indifference
To a parody of instinct
We are the people who are desperate
Beyond emotion because it defies thought
We are the people
Who conceive our destruction and carry it out lawfully
We are the insects of someone else’s thought
A casualty of daytime, nighttime, space, and God
Without race, nationality, or religion
We are the people, and the people, the people

Fair point:

There are ways to mitigate that, though, e.g. 1-minute window for editing, clear indication the tweet’s been edited, only one edit allowed, and ability for others to see the original version.

I watched the PBS documentary “American Experience: Influenza 1918” and I found it kind of disappointing and boring.

Mostly a bunch of old folks reminiscing about how the pandemic affected them as kids, a Swedish virologist describing in excruciating detail how he dug up a mass grave of native Inuit in order to obtain permafrozen specimens from victims remains (it took 42 years to sequence the virus) and appearances by Dr. Tony Fauci and Anne Schuchat explaining that we have learned basically NOTHING in the last 100 years in how to respond to a pandemic but we have slightly upgraded treatment facilities with stuff like electricity and running water (in 1st world countries anyway)

I’m still heartbroken Warren did so poorly. I feel like she’s really what we need as a country.

That’s my personal feeling as well, but this diary at DailyKos makes the result easier for me to accept.

To brutally summarize a very good essay, the main thesis is that it’s rational for black voters to be very conservative in D primaries, and that should be respected.

Trump has already floated the idea of closing the borders (stupidly) in response to this outbreak. Then again, if he has a difficult KFC shit any given morning, that’s enough to get him agitated about closing the borders.

So the equivalence is fairly weak, especially give the likelihood of Nazis actually setting the fire and the unlikelihood of Trump/Republicans being responsible for the virus.

Katrina is the better comparison, I think. Slow moving potential disaster, a president and administration without the skills/knowledge to address the issue; even though it is something we can/should be ready for.

If this gets to be a pandemic, his incompetence is going to make it much worse. And it should be a reminder that the most important thing in a president isn’t which policy he/she supports (or from the populist point of view, who they’re going to hurt for perceived wrongs), but their temperament. Because most of what being the president is in this modern world is dealing with unforeseen shit

The other key skill of a president (which Trump also completely lacks) is putting good people in positions to deal with said unforeseen shit and then getting out of their way.

Unfortunately, calling out Republican projection has had precious little effect or results, no matter how often it’s called out.

It still deserves to be called out, but it’s always has to be done with that knowledge that the media will continue to be extra credulous of all Republican attacks because that Magic (R) is law.

The internet is weird. The IT guy for an attorney I work sometimes for went online to find a photo of me for a court graphic to be used in an upcoming civil case. Known for his good nature, Stevenson was once approached by a young woman supporter, the first time that he decided to run for the president’s post. She said, “Governor, every thinking person would be voting for you”. He retorted, “Madam, that is not enough. I need a majority.”

Stevenson, then UN ambassador, was actually assaulted by a crazed Bircher, one Cora Lacy Frederickson, when he visited Dallas a few weeks before JFK’s assassination.
A Month Before JFK’s Assassination, Dallas Right Wingers Attack Adlai Stevenson
Other Birchers had heckled him during a speech and screamed abuse at him as he left, which was when Frederickson hit him over the head with her sign. Others rushed him and were tackled by the cops, who had had quite enough of Bircher bullshit by this time themselves. Two other people were arrested along with Frederickson. Stevenson asked, “”Are these human beings or animals?”
I was struck by the parallels between those long-ago Birch crazies and today’s MAGAt mobs, the crudity, the violence, the lies (one Bircher yelled that the cops were burning him with cigarettes as they slapped the cuffs on him, despite a dozen news cameras pointed right at him to record no such thing.)

Now that the field’s narrowed down and he’s trailing, Bernie’s going to do what he always does: Go negative and give in to the hollering of his base to go on the attack. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Bernie suddenly starts pushing the Burisma “scandal” and suggesting that Joe refusing to testify or allow Hunter to testify is “proof” that there’s something to hide.

The problem is Hannity is, at least from the twitter snippets, misrepresenting the WHO, so the whole thing is a strawmen that Trump is supposedly batting down.

The Princess deaths so far suggest about a 1% lethality rate, but there are still many people in serious or critical condition. Untill they either recover or die, we won’t know what the lethality rate for that event is.

And as I emphasized earlier today, the lethality of the infection depends up on the quality of the medical care. Those on the Princess cruise line in Japan are being treated by a first world medical system. In other places those in critical condition may have died already.

Our Czech-residing LGFer hasn’t checked in tonight, I think, but as expected that country now has its own cases:

Coronavirus: 6 infected, first school closed, biathlon without fans

[…]

The Czech Republic has six cases, all related to people who were in northern Italy or directly involved with those in northern Italy. On Wednesday morning, the sixth case, a mother of two children, came to be known and is awaiting official confirmation. The school where the lady’s children study, Antonína Čermáka in Prague 6 Dejvice, was closed and an alternative program was being made for the students. Therefore, the first school closing in the Czech Republic is in order. All schools and universities in Italy are closing.

[…]

Another step to keeping us safe in our homeland is the Ministry of Health has banned the export of disinfectant. Just like all the other banned substances, this is sure to hold in a country surrounded by porous EU borders.

[…]

Early reports have suggested that quarantines have been too lax, that recovery times have not been made long enough.

And now there’s this:

Coronavirus: ‘Recovered’ patient dies as China reports discharged cases falling ill again

A 36-year-old man has died of respiratory failure in Wuhan, five days after being discharged from one of the makeshift hospitals built to contain the outbreak, according to a report by Shanghai-based news portal The Paper.

The report, which was later removed, said Li Liang had been admitted to the hospital - built to treat patients with mild and moderate symptoms - on February 12, according to his wife, surnamed Mei. He was discharged two weeks later with instructions to stay in a quarantine hotel for 14 days.

Mei said her husband was not feeling well two days after leaving the hospital, with dry mouth and gaseous stomach. On March 2, Li said he felt sick and was sent to a hospital, where he was certified dead that afternoon.

[…]

As I keep repeating, the lethality of the latest strain(s) is going to depend upon the quality of the health care. If patients are going to need many weeks of observation and attention, including incubation, how much of the world population is going to be able to afford that?

“If Biden walks into the convention, or at the end of the process, has more votes than me, he’s the winner”

But he’s still talking votes than delegates there. And I’ll be curious if his tune changes further if he starts losing the vote totals as well.

Warren has also been very clear that the primary goal is to defeat Trump.

I don’t get that vibe from Sanders, especially given his behavior in 2016 and since. And definitely not from his “we’ll burn things down if we don’t get Bernie!” tantrum-throwing followers.

Warren is the candidate Sanders dreams he was. She actually knows shit. Bernie? He’s had the same stump speech since 2016 and doesn’t care about congressional majorities at all.

Unclear circumstances, like some claims I saw reported that the virus was causing permanent lung damage. I’d also wonder of the patient was pushed out of the hospital sooner than he should have been due to overcrowding or demand for treatment space.

Fucking lunatic Trump spews conspiracies claiming that WHO death rate is higher than it actually is.

Meanwhile, the death rate in the US is actually more than two times the WHO rate.

Trump’s dumbfuckery is going to get people killed. Lack of testing will get people killed. We don’t know the scope/scale of infections because we aren’t doing the kind of widespread testing needed to determine how far the disease has expanded into the community.

But we’re now seeing community based cases - NY has a bunch. NJ now has 1. And there’s yet another cruise ship where 60 people from an earlier cruise are now on board, and more than 1,000 people are potentially exposed and showing symptoms.

Everything Trump has done has been to make the situation worse, blame Obama, and deflect from his failures all while trying to goose the markets. It’s not working, and people are recognizing this, even among some of the GOPers who want to take your health coverage away.

he’s actually right about this. The WHO number is coming from a calculation of KNOWN cases and known deaths. We know the number of deaths, but the actual number of people who’ve had the virus and thought they had a mild cold is probably an order of magnitude or two higher than the number of known cases.

No, he’s not right about this. The WHO is basing their estimate on available numbers, history, and science. He’s basing his information on his gut and a need to keep stock prices up.

She has the right to. If she can keep raising money, with only 3 candidates in the race, she has the chance to consistently exceed the 15% mark, gathering delegates. Then if no-one gets sufficient delegates to win on the first ballot, she could emerge as a compromise selection at the convention, something that happened frequently before the modern era. I don’t want to see that happen, however; I’d much prefer that we have a nominee going into the convention, so that the party can unify. She may also think that since Sanders and Biden are both in their late seventies, one of them could falter, especially if they contract coronavirus, a real risk since they will be traveling the country, pressing the flesh with literally thousands of people, then the party may need an alternative.

There are examples of regulations becoming outdated and in need of change in the light of technological changes, but that does not mean that they are bad, just in need of overhaul.

Regulations are also in place to ensure that the actual price of a product or service reflects its actual cost and that these costs are not just passed on and socialized downstream.

That makes them a necessary part of any functional Free Market

A regulated market is an efficient market. We have regulations that quantity of filth in food not because filth in food is good, but because it is unavoidable. Unless you are one of those Vienna School ideologues who sees the unregulated Free Market as some sort of divine state that humankind should aspire to, then you recognize that the market is just a mechanism to help balance supply and demand and to direct investments to where they are the most beneficial to the market.

And markets are there to benefit everyone, both producers and consumers, employees and employers, borrowers and lenders.

They are only going to function to everyone’s benefit if the market assures that costs are reflected in the actual market price of goods and services and not just socialized at a later date.

All of which, if properly channeled and contained, can be useful and beneficial.

But it they are not properly contained, they can be highly destructive.

A guy stood in line for 7.5 hours tuesday night to vote in a primary in Houston. Democrats have their own diehards.

I don’t dispute that. My point is that as time goes on and survival instincts kick in the ‘types’ of diehards may separate like wheat from chaff. Some of the diehards we speak of are diehards dedicated to disinformation and bullshit.

And I’m dead serious about this. Some of my co-op buddies from university are rabid Berniebots and I feel like I can’t comment on why Bernie is unacceptable, because I’ll get my lungs ripped out. But sometimes I throw caution to the wind and comment anyway, pointing out that we have to live with the electoral system we have, not the magic electoral system they want.

And to reiterate—I graduated from university in 1984. The people I’m talking about are pretty much late Boomers, like me.

Everyone is going to wonder which way Warren is going to turn - towards Biden or Bernie as an endorsement opportunity lingers.

Does she go with the big tent Biden, who has garnered endorsements from the last 3 people to drop out in quick succession: Bloomberg, Amy, Pete, or with Bernie, who’s been playing a toxic game of my way or the highway and said some awful things about Warren in the past few weeks alone.

If she endorses Biden, it’s over for Bernie. If she remains silent, I think it still favors Biden. If she goes for Bernie, I think it wont have as much effect as Bernie fans suspect it will.

If Bernie doesn’t do well in the next batch of states, then the writing is on the wall.

Bernie’s surrogates have always been far more toxic than Bernie himself and it reveals itself constantly.

re: #281 The Pie Overlord!

Bernie won Michigan in 2016.

Bernie’s winning margins in states he won in both 2016 and 2020 have shrank from 2016 levels.

Bernie got 67 delegates compared to 63 for Clinton. With the hole Bernie finds himself in after Super Tuesday, that doesn’t close the gap in the slightest.

Bernie won Maine in 2016. He lost to Biden in 2020. His margin in VT was lower (sweeping in 2016, but only 11-5 delegate advantage in 2020 against Biden).

2016 numbers are from RCP. 2020 are from the Guardian. What’s clear is that Bernie hasn’t grown his coalition, while Biden’s on a tear.

Capitalism: where the insurance companies used to have competing fire departments that wouldn’t even begin to fight to put out the fire until you paid up front. They’d fight each other in a race to be first to put water on the fire.

It took social policy - a socialist take of a public good - to institute public fire departments to end that nonsense. But there are historical markers in various cities around the nation showing that legacy of insurance company fire departments.

Florida polling shows Biden absolutely running away with it against the field (it includes everyone who has since dropped out):

realclearpolitics.com

Biden 61-12 over Sanders in the 3/4 poll. The poll immediately preceding that one (by same firm) indicated a 34-13 Biden advantage. It’s snowballing against Sanders.

There are no Michigan polls showing post-Super Tuesday action, so can’t begin to get sense of what the Super Tuesday results will do, but if it’s anything like Florida, then it’s all bad for Bernie.

That “delegate race” looks a lot closer (IMO) than it is. I’m thinking that Bernie has probably maxed out his appeal already: those delegates yet to be chosen are likely to Go For Joe in large proportion (barring some unforeseen fluke-of-fate, of course), and it will probably be looking like a runaway by the middle of April (if not sooner, depending on the results of the mid-March primaries).

Good morning lizards.
Well, I hope you’re having a good one. My day sucked so far.

The first leg of my flight to the US and back next week was cancelled after Lufthansa Airlines announced they were suspending all flights to and from Israel for the next 3 weeks.
Since that flight was booked through United Airlines (which is handling the return flight), United “generously” offered to change the initial flight without any fees - but then made it clear that any alternative flight would cost at least an extra $179 per person.
The tickets originally cost $650 per person, and cancelling the flights altogether would cost $350 per person. Joy of joys.

And as if all that weren’t enough, I had a Lufthansa representative tell me something earlier that isn’t news anywhere yet, and that I haven’t been able to confirm elsewhere - that per new policy issued today, ALL TRAVELERS ORIGINATING FROM GERMANY, ITALY AND ISRAEL TO THE U.S. WILL BE QUARANTINED UPON ARRIVAL.

You’d think that last bit would be a major headline in the country..

The airlines and multinationals are doing the jobs that Trumpworld and the US government should be doing. They’re trying to be more proactive than the government. And that means you’ll find out things like this, only as an afterthought.

Yep, it would be nice if we could count on most people to vote correctly. I know the idea is to read that as “if everyone would vote for their favorite candidate, she would win” but it really should be read is “if we could count on racists/sexists/idiots to vote for the right person, she would win.”

Mild in the Streets, driftglass

I understand that in the middle of a hotly contested campaign, it is impossible to tell anyone anything. At this point, campaign staffs are not worried about bruised feelings or stepping on toes: they are grinding it out an inches at at time and rooting through their tool kit looking for the biggest hammer available to get them to the finish line.

However, a brazen flip-flop on this scale does what a campaign should never do: drags attention away from what should be any campaign’s focus — the candidate’s strengths and ideas — and instead hangs a big, bright lantern on campaign’s internal weaknesses and contradictions.

Here is Sanders’ campaign national co-chair, Nina Turner, being appalled that candidates are using Barack Obama as a crutch: [video]

And less than 24 hours after getting stomped in the South, we find the Sanders’ campaign using Barack Obama as a crutch (by cutting together several sound bites out of context): [video]

Bernie Sanders has been running for the Democratic nomination on the novel electoral theory that the entire Democratic Party is a wretched hive of scum and villainy and that most of the party’s 42 million registered voters are either hapless stooges or corporatist shills. …

KHOU Broadcasts False Story about Voting in Harris County, El Jefe on Juanita Jean’s

Now we know why, in addition to removing voting sites, some places in TX were SOOO incapable of handling Democratic voters.

Today, KHOU broadcast a demonstrably false story about yesterday’s long lines at polling places in Harris County. In one of their “Verify” segments, they pretended to investigate the extremely long lines for Democratic voters while Republican voters who had NO lines. The truth is that the GOP polling places had no lines because Trump had already sewn up the nomination (because the RNC declined to hold primaries), so turnout for the remaining primary races was meager.

KHOU’s conclusion from their “investigation” was that both Democrats and Republicans “agreed in advance” to hold separate primaries. In short, that conclusion is blatantly false …

The R’s refused to hold a joint primary, so that the voting machines could have been shared. That’s why the R’s voting machines were empty a good chunk of the time and the D’s had long lines. There is ALWAYS MALICE!

Sort of did just before seeing your post.

KHOU Broadcasts False Story about Voting in Harris County, El Jefe on Juanita Jean’s

Now we know why, in addition to removing voting sites, some places in TX were SOOO incapable of handling Democratic voters.

The R’s refused to hold a joint primary, so that the voting machines could have been shared. That’s why the R’s voting machines were empty a good chunk of the time and the D’s had long lines. There is ALWAYS MALICE!

I only have 20 years of anecdotal data, but the primaries I have participated in have always been separated by party on the day of voting here in Texas.

re: #361 Targetpractice

Personally, I’d prefer if Warren bows out today without making an endorsement, if only to watch the utter chaos in the Bernie camp that will ensue.

If she doesn’t make an endorsement today, the Berniebros are going to attack her.

There was a story in the WaPo last night with a headline about how the Warner campaign was negotiating with the Sanders campaign to endorse Bernie. My blood pressure shot through the roof but when I read the story it looked like most of the quotes were from Bernie people. I think they’re trying to establish a conventional wisdom that Warner voters will all flock to Bernie. Evidence is showing that this is pretty inaccurate.

Hope I’m not speaking too soon…

My parents had a big family trip planned for Italy and Slovenia. Not happening now. I was really looking forward to meeting my cousins.

Meanwhile, Czechs are still taking their vacations to the affected areas of Italy*. “Look at the great bargains on travel to Italy!!”

We’re doomed.

*no kidding - I personally know three people who are traveling to Milan (and the Lombardy region in general) for vacation, starting this weekend.

According to the article, the Dems agreed to a joint primary to share the machines. The Repubs refused.

NO SMOCKING GUN!  Mar 5, 2020 • 10:11:41am

Nate Silver’s primary election model had increased the odds of there being no primary winner of the Democratic nomination to 61% before Super Tuesday. In retrospect, this was clearly wrong; it apparently didn’t take into account the bandwagon effect. You can’t stay in the race very long finishing third or fourth in primaries, because donations and enthusiasm die out and get transferred to the candidates who are winning primaries. While it’s true Bloomberg didn’t need donors, he wasn’t going to keep spending hundreds of millions of dollars for the humiliation of finishing third. While brokered conventions were common before the modern era, don’t ever get suckered by pundits into thinking one will happen again.

As one of those crotchety Millenials that Berners see as “the establishment,” it’s hard not to conclude that their entire reason for hating Biden is because he’s not promising them “free” anything.

I want to see someone post on twitter the number of votes Trump received on super-Tuesday vs. the number of votes Biden, Sanders, Warren and Bloomberg each received, with separate totals for each state. I bet it’s possible that even Tulsi got more total votes than Trump.

re: #16 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Too bad it looks like every metric that he’s hoping to claim a lead on isn’t one where he is actually going to lead. It’s the same exact situation he faced in 2016, where he was behind in all the metrics and his toxic supporters ignored all that and claimed conspiracies. His surrogates are again at it.

First to 1991 wins. That’s the metric that matters. If he can’t get to 1991, he can’t be the nominee. This is basic math, and right now, he’s having a hard time comprehending that he’s behind and isn’t likely to catch up.
