Outdoor triage outside Saint Görans Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.
The Hospital is triaging patients with respiratory symptoms outdoors in order to prevent spread of the Coronavirus. The tents are from the military, and you see soldiers in the street, as well as at least one military vehicle (yellow on black reg plate is military).

HAVE they accepted it yet? Last I checked (13:30 ET), the deal was “close”, but not yet finalized to the point where (one presumes) the House will actually vote on it. The last updates were 2-3 hours ago.

Though we still have to wonder what the Senate is likely to do.

PS: Markets (equity markets, anyway), don’t seem all THAT “juiced”. They opened high this morning, but traded down to near yesterday’s close, then are edging back up. Hopefully, this means “Black Thursday“‘s index levels are going to become a “floor” of sorts, but who knows?

I was wondering where those numbers were coming from of over a million deaths here. The NYT has the CDC numbers: nytimes.com.

This is from a Dr. Jordan Shlain, taking notes from a UCSF panel:

[We used their numbers to work out a guesstimate of deaths— indicating about 1.5 million Americans may die. The panelists did not disagree with our estimate. This compares to seasonal flu’s average of 50K Americans per year. Assume 50% of US population, that’s 160M people infected. With 1% mortality rate that’s 1.6M Americans die over the next 12-18 months.]

Again, what’s Plan B if the ongoing containment measures fail? When planning in a disaster scenario, I’ve found it’s always best to do so assuming an absolute worst case scenario. In this case, containment fails and COVID-19 becomes a year-round, endemic virus, with the same levels of contagion and CFR’s.

It goes without saying that the lockdown-style measures simply cannot be sustained for long; the economic damage from that might actually be worse than the epidemic itself.

containment has already failed. The name of the game is slowing spread so hospitals don’t get overwhelmed. If we do get 60 million cases in the next year to 18 months then we will have gained a certain amount of herd immunity and should hopefully have a vaccine by then so spread will be much more manageable.

Then what? Like I said, indefinite lockdowns are simply not possible. There’s also still no vaccine for SARS or MERS.

I’m partly just playing devil’s advocate. But I’m not just going to blithely assume that the measures currently in place are going to succeed, nor will I assume that a vaccine will save us all.

IMO the long term worst case scenarios mainly depend on whether or not covid19 mutates like the flu does.

If it doesn’t mutate, then it’s a fixed target and there’s every reason to believe a vaccine will become available with the resources that will be thrown at it. Even if there is no vaccine, previously infected people should be immune.

If it does mutate, then we’d be looking at something like a permanent 10x worse flu season each year.

re: #85 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

I think in countries where dogs aren’t treated as livestock to eat, a fur source or a pestilence, they’ll probably be okay.

China, India, N/S Korea, Romania… any dogs on the streets have historically not been treated well. It isn’t like they need a new reason to kill them there. And it seems wherever there is more poverty and ignorance and age-old stupid superstition, it’s more likely to happen.

When I went to Kaiser for surgery yesterday nurses told me they were scared because of the mask and gloves shortage…

I was just called by Region West Medical Center in Scottsbluff to confirm my appointment Monday afternoon.

They’ve been on protocols to stem the tide of influenza for a couple months now (banning children from visitation, reminders about coughing, &c).

So far, other than the hit they’re taking from all the people with flu they seem to be running along okay.

Then what? Like I said, indefinite lockdowns are simply not possible. There’s also still no vaccine for SARS or MERS.

My understanding is that there’s no SARS vaccine because they stopped developing it when the outbreak was over and nobody wanted to pony up the dough to finish testing. There are about ten different experimental COVID vaccines now, which were driven heavily by a Gates Foundation initiative over the last few years. The Gates Foundation identified a pandemic risk like this as basically a no-brainer gonna-happen, and worked on a generic framework for a SARS-like virus, which they used for the experimental vaccines now.

re: #91 EPR-radar

IMO the long term worst case scenarios mainly depend on whether or not covid19 mutates like the flu does.

If it doesn’t mutate, then it’s a fixed target and there’s every reason to believe a vaccine will become available with the resources that will be thrown at it. Even if there is no vaccine, previously infected people should be immune.

If it does mutate, then we’d be looking at something like a permanent 10x worse flu season each year.

If it does mutate, though, it’s likely a vaccine will be only partially effective, not completely ineffective…but, yes, a permanent worse flu season.

So do humans. It’s just that some are more mutable than others.

To be fair, in many places, the dogs have gone feral and are a real public danger. I got chased & bit in Eastern Europe by a pack of snarling, nasty dogs. Yeah, it would be better if they were all given nice, warm, loving homes … but that ain’t gonna happen in those places. They can barely provide that to their citizens, and governmental infrastructure can barely keep up.

A view into the future of the U.S.? Yeah, maybe.

To keep the feral population under control and to keep their skills up, samurai in Japan used dogs for target practice. Except under the time of the shogun Tsunayoshi (1680-1709 as shogun)—he had strong Buddhist inclinations against taking life, and since he happened to be born in the year of the dog he declared that dogs could not be killed and must be cared for. Once he died there were supposedly something like 40,000 dogs in care facilities that were promptly let out creating the kind of hazard you note. The samurai went back to killing. As far as I know, dog was not a serious source of protein in Japan where fish made up the bulk of meat consumed. (And this concludes the useless post of the day.)
