I’m convinced Trump is lying about having been tested because he said he would get the results back “in a couple of days.” There is no way the leader of the free world would not get his results back in under an hour.

Yeah, exactly. He’d have his results probably faster than anyone else on the planet. He’s the President, FFS.

At the last Soros meeting we were told to keep it going until the president and Fox News whiplash from saying the virus is all a hoax to praising the president for his quick and competent handling of this national emergency.

How long did the Utah Jazz have to wait?

EDIT: Donovan Mitchell’s test results hit the media two days after Rudy Gobert’s results put an end to the NBA season. But yeah, I’d imagine the president’s test would get AAAA priority.

It will be interesting to know whether the rich, famous, and well-connected are getting affected at a higher rate, or they’re just the ones who can get tested in a hurry. Constantly being around a large number of people who travel A LOT and have a lot of in-person events has got to make transmission likely, especially with a “can’t happen to me” attitude. All the fancy-ass bunkers in the middle of New Zealand won’t make much of a difference if you already got the bug and thought you had more time than you did.

Ahh. Well the recipe did mention high proof vodka.

High proof vodka is usually 100 proof, which is of course 50 percent. I’ve seen 120 on the shelf somewhere once, but you’re still diluting it. And the alcohol will start evaporating.

I suppose you could set up your own still and redistill it, but FFS at that point you’re better off scrounging for real hand sanitizer.

Edit - Use your alcohol the correct way - ingest it.

The city government is like: “We’d prefer WWE to make the right decision and cancel it themselves” whereas WWE is like “we’re moving ahead unless the city of Tampa stops us.”

Yeah. I’ve got some 70% isopropyl and some glycerine around the house, and if I really need any actual Purell, I’m sure I can scrounge some up. Since we’re hardly going out of the house, soap and water are enough for now.

If it’s been tightly capped (and still smells like alcohol), it’s probably ok. Remember, the alcohol is backup for soap and water ONLY.

Here is my panic-buying story: I made a dash for the MA border yesterday morning early and got to the recreational dispensary early. I waited in my car until a couple of folks had lined up then got in line (they let in four at a time). The guy in front of me drives every couple of months two hours from mid-NH, he said. He said he works construction and there are some strains that help with arthritis and muscle aches (he takes a hit on his paycheck to take the morning off for the journey). The guy behind me, also from NH, owns his own paving company—“if they didn’t have limits I’d hoard the whole fucking store!” (to which the clerk says, “we’ve changed our policy: once you meet the limit you just go outside and get back in line, you can do it four times.” I got some edibles and concentrate because I don’t want to compromise my lungs in any way at this time. I’m glad I did. 5-10mg and I sleep pretty well, and I don’t want to travel next week or anytime in the next while.

People need to take a deep breath. Now, some people may suddenly need to stock up on some items because they are no longer eating half their meals in restaurants. (This doesn’t account for the TP fetish, but for cleaning out the bread and chicken.)

This is the approach I’ve been taking, and promoting to my Facebook friends. I picked up one package of toilet paper when the store I was at had some. I have an Amazon order in for two larger packages due to arrive next week. I told Mrs. Fish to pick up a few groceries that would keep for a while. It’s bad, but the hoarding is just pointless. Stuff will go bad in pantries and refrigerators and, yes, even freezers; you’re going to wind up having to shop again sooner rather than later. Get more than you usually do, but not more than you need.

Some of my medical professional students have noted that once those lockdowns are over….the virus will likely be spreading again. And then there will have to be mass lockdowns, followed by mass infections, an unending cycle at least until a vaccine comes along.

Tourism here in Czech Republic is dead for the foreseeable future, and tourism contributes quite nicely to the national GDP. As one of my accounting students noted, if this continues longer than four months, the Czech Republic will be as economically devastated as though it had been in a major war.

Or that much available storage space.

We don’t have a lot of storage space.

We’ll be making our regular grocery run after my doctor’s appointment at the hospital in Scottsbluff (though I’m going to call Monday and see if that’s still on now).

At the moment we seem to live in a very large clear area for the virus, and we haven’t been out in days, so I don’t really know the panic-buying situation here yet.

We’ll probably buy more non-perishable groceries than we usually do (dry foods, canned goods, &c).

We still haven’t gotten into that Methuselah-size package of bathroom tissue we bought at the FE Warren AFB commissary last month (only bought it because it was on a steep discount, before March toilet-paper Madness set in).

TarHellion  Mar 14, 2020 • 1:42:01pm

Went to the grocery store at 7 am EDT in my little slice of Trump Country heaven in Western NC. The place looked like a war zone. Two weeks ago I had picked up some Lysol (had a coupon). Today, those shelves were bare. Got the last multi-roll of Charmin and one of the last multi-pack of Bounty Essentials (it was the week for paper products)

Mrs. TarHellion wanted some hamburger to make chili. Could not believe that ALL of the packaged hamburger meat was gone. Wound up getting the larger tube-size. At least it was on weekly special. What she doesn’t use for chili can go in the freezer for burgers soon enough.

Talked with my friend who is a cashier/manager and he said Friday was absolutely insane. He said the store on a typical Friday would do $40,000 in sales. Instead, the store did $86,000.

Guess all these fundamentalist Republicans around here now realize this isn’t a hoax.

Drove past the Walmarts and Walmart Neighborhood Markets on the way to take my dad his birthday card in a neighboring town. You would think it was peak Christmas shopping season based on how full the parking lots were.

Mrs. T also wanted to look at used cars at Carmax. At least there you can check out vehicles without a sales rep hanging all over you. Spoke with one as we left and he said foot traffic was about half of what it would be on a normal Saturday (partly sunny skies and temps in the low 60s). Restaurant parking lots at Outback, Chili’s, etc. seemed abandoned.

Our church is (thankfully) changing practices. Tomorrow’s 8 am service will have communion without the wafer or wine. And no contact with others during the passing of the peace. We usually have about 30 people for that service - with about half of those in their 70s or 80s. Doubt we have 15 attend tomorrow. Just hope some of our larger churches that have 150 or more attendees will adopt common-sense practices.

All in all, just a really surreal experience today. Like something out of a sci-fi movie. Or a Fallout video game.

University of Nebraska Medical Center daily update, as of three hours ago:

Daily updates will be posted every afternoon

March 14

Two former passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship have tested negative and will go home today.

One community health care worker who was also in the National Quarantine Unit left this morning.

One person who was receiving treatment in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit departed to home isolation. A 36-year-old Omaha woman receiving care in the Biocontainment Unit remains in critical condition, while a 16-year-old boy from Crofton, Neb., is still in serious condition. The former Diamond Princess passenger injured in a fall remains in serious condition in the Biocontainment Unit.

We now have 11 people in the National Quarantine Unit and three people in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit.

For those who might be experiencing symptoms, instructions are available here. This link also offers resources, guidelines and links to trusted sources for area residents and businesses as they take measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Cases in the U.S. have reached nearly 2,175, with 50 deaths. Worldwide, cases have reached nearly 143,000 in 160 countries, with nearly 5,400 deaths.

I suggested to my wife that parents who have children here who go to Bridgeport are going to be out-of-luck for childcare come Monday, and perhaps the Public Library could be open every weekday (she is still certified as a librarian though she is no longer working there). Britain is planning on bringing in quarantines - but not the way you’d think….

People over 70 will be instructed by the government to stay in strict isolation at home or in care homes for four months, under a “wartime-style” mobilisation effort by the government likely to be enforced within the next 20 days.

It is part of a series of measures being prepared by the prime minister, health secretary, chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser to prevent the health service from “falling over” and to save lives as Covid-19 becomes an epidemic in the UK.

Basically, the idea is to put the elderly (and presumably, other at-risk groups) into forced isolation.

The prime minister’s adviser, Dominic Cummings, has also initiated conversations with Uber and Deliveroo about taking food to the old and vulnerable when they are put into forced isolation.

As I have written in previous notes, all government efforts are based on the assumptions that there won’t be a vaccine within a year and that everything has to be done to protect the collapse of the health service.

What keeps ministers and officials awake at night is the fear that if the epidemic becomes too great they would have to make appalling decisions, such as that the NHS would stop treating people over a certain age, such as 65.

Ricketts said while there are 13 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state as of Friday, the disease has not reached the threshold to close schools.

So much for my post-workout routine holy trinity of sauna, swimming pool and hot tub… :(

A hoax I believe our piece of shit excuse for a President called it. I’m fucking angry. I won’t act like I saw a pandemic coming but I knew that there was gonna be some test on him as President that he was and is going to show why he only should be playing a President in Sharknado 5. I feel so bad for the kids who know only him as President. We had my niece the other day. She saw one of my other brother’s old rulers that had the POTUSes on it and she didn’t see Trump on it. I guess maybe she’s reading a lot better or she heard me name drop the name but she wanted to know what everyone thought about Eisenhower. I’d take Ike right now too. We elected the worst possible person President four years ago.

Edit for background: Local big city cancelled its famous St. Patrick’s Day parade. Local town known for small-town managerial issues and general drunken sloppiness of living (read: beachy charm) decided to go ahead with its small celebration, then called for a cancellation just a couple of hours before the celebration was due to start, which was allegedly too late to take effect since the parade was already forming - rumors abounded on social media, nobody knew what the fuck was going on, party went ahead anyway, for sure attended by people from out of town who couldn’t attend the big show in town… Who are almost certainly in town from counties & states with known cases.

Just found five medium-sized bottles of Purel left over from an accidental Amazon order two years ago in a closet. Feel like a billionaire.

I know the feeling after finding most of a 16 oz. bottle of 91% Iso Alcohol in my linen closet today.

At work, I have my bottle of Purel that expired in 12/15.

This is all a Tom Clancy novel. One of the better ones, except Trump is sure no Jack Ryan.

Amusingly, he wrote exactly this into the epidemic scenario in the back half of Executive Orders, where he contemplates that 1) It probably ISN’T legal, 2) still the right thing to do, 3) yes it probably can’t be done perfectly but 4) given a few days enough local troops will be able to shut most everything down (and this was written pre-drones so probably easier now), and 5) the point is not to have impermeable borders, but simply to stop enough of the movement to slow transmission and impress the seriousness of the situation on the public.

Granted that was an almost-airborne Ebola strain rather than this super-cold so some of the timescales lead to a happier ending, but I’m not sure it wouldn’t be the right thing to do. Again, I don’t understand why an (R) admin isn’t following the Clancy playbook… other than they know that Clancy worshiped actual ability and they have NONE.

Back from shopping.

Store busy, not packed (Saturday, but I’m usually not so foolish as to go on that day, so can’t say whether it was normal). It’s raining off and on.

Plenty of chickens, and they were restocking paper products. I didn’t see sanitizing products, and isopropyl alcohol was out of stock. No hugely packed shopping carts.

Staple items in short supply, but I found everything except my preferred brand of canned soup.

I was buying for the case where I show symptoms and have to self-isolate. Eggs, four cans of chicken noodle soup (on sale, buy two, get two free), six frozen entrees, peanut butter, pasta. Up the street at the bread-and-cheese store, they were letting about four people at a time in (five minute wait), because almost everything they have is unpackaged. The employees, wearing gloves, asked what you wanted and got it for you. Bought bread, rolls, jack cheese (freezes beautifully, and I have plenty of cheese for current needs).

Looks like people haven’t gone mad here yet, except they’re buying way too much toilet paper and paper towels.

Went to restaurant for lunch. Pizza — no pineapple, no eggplant, no anchovies — and beer (Corona). Joke about virus beer endured.

Home, washed hands to elbows, and face. Mission accomplished.

A few months ago, we were at the increasing rate of stories about the utter criminality of the regime, and looking back towards the Bush administration and wishing things were only as bad as then.

Now, I’m looking back at the utter criminality of the Trump regime, and am _almost_ looking back at when that was the worst to fear with nostalgia. But things wouldn’t be so bad for what will be the worst crisis in my 40 years if we hadn’t had Trump in the first place.

Here in the Bay Area, the grocery stories are now limiting the number of people allowed in at a time (from what I’ve seen both Trader Joe’s and some speciality Indian grocery stores). Non-perishable staples have been wiped out (most types of pasta), canned veggies and beans, flour and rice. Fresh veggies and fruits are in normal supply.

There are lots of cereals though…

No types of bread are on the shelves.

I suspect that some stores are trying to prevent people from bulk buying by putting small amounts on the shelves and restocking regularly.

Italy is messing with its statistics, according to the Worldometer site:

* ITALY: Italian media are reporting the change in active cases (a lower number) rather than the change in total cases (a higher number), representing it as “newly infected” when, in fact, it represents the “change in active cases.” Newly infected, meaning the number of people who have tested positive to the virus in the last day, is the number shown on the table above, which corresponds to the change in total cases in accordance with the international standards set by the WHO and followed by all countries. The change in active cases (what Italian media label as “newly infected”) is the result of the following formula: (newly infected) - (new deaths) - (new recoveries). All data, including total cases (“casi totali”) is available on Italy’s Dipartimento della Protezione Civile official repository.

So my great uncle turned 100 today. A lunch party was planned about a month ago at country club in Montgomery County, PA, which sits next to Philly. Montgomery County is turning into a hot spot for Covid-19 diagnoses in PA.

I RSVPd to go, but in light of all the Covid insanity, I got a hold my dad’s cousin’s wife and said we were bailing, I offered to pay for our meals so they weren’t out any money.

These are my late dad’s cousins, so a good chunk of the attendees are in their late 60’s and 70’s, and possibly 80’s. And, as noted, the birthday boy is 100.

They still held the party. My brother and sister-in-law went.

I think this is fucking insane in light of where it was held, the age of the birthday celebrant and the attendees, and all the evidence that Covid-19 thrives on this kind of human contact.

Am I wrong here? I don’t think I am, but I’m still shaking my head that this wasn’t postponed.

I can’t believe she doesn’t see the obvious GOP talking point in there. It wasn’t a nebulous “government” incompetence, it was Trump’s.

It’s the same deal as when headlines say ‘Senate blocks (insert common sense thing here)’, without explaining that it was a party line vote on the GOP’s end that blocked it. It leaves the assumption of ‘the entire system must be at fault’ rather than incompetents and malicious leaders at the forefront.

It can never be just Republicans fault even when they run fucking everything. It must be ‘everyone’s fault, Dems included, which leads us to having people on our left demonizing Dems first and foremost, because “they must be at fault too, perhaps even more at fault!’

re: #421 aatharuv

Here in the Bay Area, the grocery stories are now limiting the number of people allowed in at a time (from what I’ve seen both Trader Joe’s and some speciality Indian grocery stores). Non-perishable staples have been wiped out (most types of pasta), canned veggies and beans, flour and rice. Fresh veggies and fruits are in normal supply.

There are lots of cereals though…

No types of bread are on the shelves.

I suspect that some stores are trying to prevent people from bulk buying by putting small amounts on the shelves and restocking regularly.

I’m in the east bay, if we’re talking about the same bay area. We don’t seem to have that problem in my little corner of it. But I guess the country is proving the adage, ” When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.”

Appreciate it. I’m not thrilled with my brother right now. His attitude was “I just go to work and come straight home, so I’m not really at risk.”

My brother lives in a tiny, low-key township in Southeast PA. It’s called Philadelphia; not sure if people are familiar with it.

My brother is far from a stupid person, but I’m really irritated with this move and the reasoning behind it. This kind of personal fable thinking is what helped speed up my parents’ demises.

Worth noting that when I spoke with my dad’s cousin’s wife when initially RSVPing, I brought up postponing, I got an emphatic “No”.

It varies from store to store and moment to moment here on the Peninsula. Around 3 p.m. Friday I bought, among other things, some bananas at the local market. There was a decent supply. My brother reported getting the last 3 bananas at 6 p.m.

So I go to the store to pick up something to eat, and sure enough several isles look raided, not just the paper isle. The paper isle is barren, but the soup isle still has about half the stock. Plenty of milk products, though.

Here’s the thing: I’m at the self check-out and as it my custom I wipe down the touch pads with the handi-wipes I get at the entrance. But when I observe other people - they don’t. Sure, they are hoarding… but they don’t do the most basic of preventative measures. Most people are not taking the handi-wipes at the door to wipe the handles of carts and baskets… yet they buy cart loads of goods just in case.

They should be fine. Daughter is a pediatrician so she can’t really work from home, but son-in-law can work from home some of the time and has family leave available.

Apparently COVID is not normally a problem for infants, even newborns, though it would really suck for the parents to have it when they have a new baby to deal with. I hope all goes well for them.
