Ahoy! In the midst of these strange times, we’re starting the Live from Home stage, a digital space for us to keep making and experiencing art when we can’t be physically together. Because of cancellations and closures, many performers’ income streams have become unstable. We encourage you to support the artists you love by buying their music and merch, and other means of direct financial support. You can support Live from Here by donating at support.mpr.org
And, if you’re making your own art while stuck inside, we encourage you to share it using #livefromhome.

To kick things off, @christhile covered @Wilco’s “Radio Cure.”
We invite Sara Bareilles, Jon Batiste, and Hilary Hahn to perform #livefromhome next!

The driving here, which has always been batshit insane has gone to a whole new level. I don’t know what you would even call it. But people are running red lights and stop signs constantly. When we drive anywhere in town, we see at least 2 red light/stop sign run throughs.

The driving might kill us before the virus does.

You knew he was going to do it.

Yup.

Ron Paul.

He has an article circulating in the derposphere:

Ron Paul: The Coronavirus Hoax

Over what? A virus that has thus far killed just over 5,000 worldwide and less than 100 in the United States? By contrast, tuberculosis, an old disease not much discussed these days, killed nearly 1.6 million people in 2017. Where’s the panic over this?

Of course he knows that the deaths are going to grow, but like so many, Paul doesn’t care.

Of course Paul knows that there is a TB vaccine, so if governments were willing then the entire planet could be vaccinated cases reduced more (note the vaccine apparently isn’t always effective). Also note that other countries are still very concerned about TB, contrary to what Paul is implying. Heck, when I lived in Japan I had to have a chest xray because where I was working/studying at the time required it of all people; it didn’t matter that I was an adult and had been vaccinated as a child (see scar) and never had any symptoms.

Ron Paul is the gift that keeps giving.

I waited after a light turned green today since I expected a car to my left was not going to wait for me to cross on foot* before attempting his right turn. I was actually somewhat surprised that he didn’t do the “right on red” in violation of the sign prohibiting it at at corner.

His car was a bit like the video of that dog anticipating the ball being thrown. It edged every time the opposing traffic lessened. And he a moved 3’ forward when the light for opposing traffic turned yellow.

* - I have to use this intersection (or one a block down) to cross US-30 all the time. And I hate it since the signal setting for giving me a “cross” signal is inconsistent; e.g. it works normally about 75% of the signal cycles and the rest of the time it appears to ignore that the crossing button was hit and never gives me a positive signal to cross.

Yes, they will be, and yes, they will. A third of the people in the county will be unemployed in two weeks and will soon be unable to buy meat. A buck elk in the freezer buys them three, maybe four months.

Desperate times will call for desperate measures.

I have a friend who spent his youth living on the deer he poached for his family. Local law knew he was but because they never took more than they needed to, they looked the other way. Hell, on occasion when there were road kill deer, they called him so they knew it would not be a waste.

So I just ordered four pounds of beans online. It had to be four because “my” blend has four varieties. (That’s also why I haven’t ordered online before now.) I’ll have to grind it myself, which I hate, but we have to make these sacrifices.

I keep thinking of one more “shelter in place” thing I need, but I think (hope!) that ibuprofen is the last. I’ll pick some up the next time I need to do a shopping run, probably next week.

Fuck Ron Paul. I have latent tuberculosis. If I was to come down with this coronavirus, there is a good chance it would seriously injure or kill me due to existent lung damage.

Worse for others, it could reactivate my tuberculosis and make me infectious to others. Amongst other things, I would have to go into quarantine for that (been there already in 1987 got the t-shirt) or my wife would have to move out.

Just a reminder that Nor Luap’s 2008 campaign manager Kent Snyder died from viral pneumonia. Kent being a true disciple of Ayn Rand had no insurance. And like any good Libertarian he stuck his family with medical bills totaling over $400K…

It’s been a good-news/bad-news day.

I’ve found a way of modeling *some* of the official and publicly available data for Covid-19 that simply sidesteps several aspects of the many large uncertainties. I focus on
1) cummulative # deaths globally, as officially reported. I reason that THOSE are likely to be fairly accurate, and not fudged (much) by most nations.
2) Pick a percentage for the “real” mortality rate— 1%, 2%, 5% —it doesn’t matter much. This simple modeling is NOT very sensitive to your choice.
3) Current world population — about 7,800,000,000 now, based on 7.7 billion as of last April —an official consensus/guestimate found on wikipedia.

A simplistic (but useful) model is to assume exponential (ie, geometric) growth for the (cummulative) # of deaths. Assume (nearly) everyone gets exposed, and social-distancing efforts etc have little effect. If you assume 1% will soon die after infection, you can plot a straight line on semi-logarithmic graph paper, thru two or more such data points, and with a slope consistent with about 5 days for each doubling, until you reach 78,000,000 (1% of world population). If you assume a different mortality rate, say 2%, IT TAKES JUST ONE MORE DOUBLING TIME to reach 78,000,000 times 2.

With just a 4 fn calculator, you can easily check how many times you can double 7125 (Global cummulative # DECEASED, as of 10pm NYC time, today), to reach (or exceed) the hard endpoint.

If you understand logarithms, you can be a little more precise about the # of doublings. (It need not be an integer; it can have a decimal fraction part.) And you won’t need special graph paper.

There is some consensus that the characteristic doubling time is about 5 days, and that about 14 days is a reasonable estimate for the time between onset of symptoms and death (for those infected who die).

I understand that a simple geometric growth model, with no slowdown until absolute hard limits are reached may be dismissed because it is “unrealist” and not “comprehensive” enough. For any realistic model, new numbers for infections, recoveries, deaths, etc would rise, level off, and begin falling. Ie, something like a gaussian, such as you see in the # FlattenTheCurve messaging campaign.

My point is that the “simplistic” model can inform a more “realistic” one. A gaussian peak for new # deaths will occur about ONE DOUBLING TIME (about 5 days) after the endpoint of the “simplistic/unrealistic/hard-stop” geometric growth model. And numbers for new # infections (confirmed or not) should peak about 14 days earlier than for new # deaths.

However, it is likely that as the situation worsens, few nations will be able to sustain accurate daily (or even weekly) up-to-date counts, even for deaths.

I’m not posting details/results at this time, but just a hint: You should probably do your taxes ahead of the filing deadlines.

This is kinda interesting, it’s from a non-peer reviewed study from a group of Chinese researchers.

You can download the study here: medrxiv.org

OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between the ABO blood group and the COVID-19 susceptibility.

CONCLUSION People with blood group A have a significantly higher risk for acquiring COVID-19 compared with non-A blood groups, whereas blood group O has a significantly lower risk for the infection compared with non-O blood groups.

Again, it’s non-peer reviewed as of yet, but it’s an interesting hypothesis.

Yeah, it’s definitely a rather unique fixation - I’ve never seen it anywhere else. When I’d be asked, I’d just say, “I’m O-“. I’ve known since I was a curious little tyke, and once saw my vaccination record and asked my mom what blood type meant, so she did what she always did when I asked medical question…..she pulled out the medical encyclopedia and had me read it.

Again, it’s just a hypothesis from a non-peer reviewed study, but it’s nonetheless interesting and personally, I hope it’s pursued further - let’s say that hypothesis turns out to be true; now we have a way of identifying those most at-risk from COVID-19 complications.

I think it bears further research, and I hope they do.

Not O, I take it.

It also makes me wonder if people with O blood types are the carriers…we hear so often about asymptomatic carriers or people with exceptionally mild symptoms. So O blood types are the vectors, and people with A, B, or AB blood types end up paying the price.

That’s a genuinely intriguing hypothesis.

Getting back to the California primary: unprocessed ballots down to a bit over 500k. Warren is only at 13.3%, so it looks like she’s not going to make the 15% figure. Bloomberg is down to 12.5%. Biden has inched up to 27.9% and Bernie is at 34.9% . So while Bernie is going to get the majority of the delegates, not by much.

Overall, I heard even a Bernie supporter acknowledge that Bernie underperformed in California.

‘Come back Monday, OK?’ Hundreds of prisoners escape in Brazil amid Covid-19 anger

Holiday for minimum security prisoners is cancelled because of outbreak, so many simply run off.

Hundreds of prisoners have escaped from four semi-open prisons in São Paulo state in the south-east of Brazil after Easter prison holidays were cancelled and restrictions on visitors tightened because of coronavirus.

Videos showed dozens of prisoners fleeing down a street near one coastal prison and flooding across a soccer pitch on a beach.

There were riots and escapes from semi-open prisons in Tremembé, Porto Feliz and a wing of a prison in Mirandópolis in São Paulo state. In one video hordes of prisoners could be seen running away in Mongaguá on the São Paulo coast - where 400 reportedly fled - while a man shouts: “Come back Monday, OK?” Other videos showed dozens on a beach. The G1 news site reported that 40 had been recaptured.

Barr issues memo to U.S. attorneys outlining DOJ priorities amid the outbreak

Attorney General William Barr sent a two-page memo to all U.S. attorneys Monday that outlined the Department of Justice’s priorities for law enforcement and the health and safety of people in the judicial system.

Every U.S. attorney’s office has been ordered to prioritize the detection, investigation and prosecution of criminal conduct that’s related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The memo referred to businesses selling fake cures online for the COVID-19 disease, phishing emails from entities posing as the World Health Organization or the CDC and malware infecting apps designed to track the spread of the virus.

If you get a Baratza burr grinder, you won’t hate grinding coffee so much. I have the low end model, and it would help Italy just a bit.

i hand grind every morning while the water boils (french press)
takes about a minute (68-82 cranks)
burr grinder. adjustable grind. amazon. $8.00

re: #7 plansbandc

The driving here, which has always been batshit insane has gone to a whole new level. I don’t know what you would even call it. But people are running red lights and stop signs constantly. When we drive anywhere in town, we see at least 2 red light/stop sign run throughs.

The driving might kill us before the virus does.

None of that will show up in the covid19 stats. But you can suss out the excess deaths and casualties when you look at all the additional hospitalizations, fatalities, etc., during this period.

And it rests with Trump failing to do his motherfucking job. He saw his mission as sabotaging functioning govt, destroying Obama’s legacy, and stealing everything not bolted down to make a profit from it. Even rate cuts are self-interested since it reduces his leveraged business debt load.

Trump’s failures continue piling up and a single presser where he acts semi-rationally doesn’t overcome weeks of him priming his know nothing base that this isn’t serious and is a hoax.

Heck, just this morning he was again bitching about Cuomo and indicated that WV doesn’t have any cases.

West Virginia doesn’t have cases because they’re not testing for it. The entire state has conducted all of 50 tests since this began. They’re not showing cases because they’re not looking for them. And if you’re not looking for them, you’re not confining the spread.

So people will die - and it will come in a wave.

NY is several weeks closer to that wave crashing, and Trump’s being a vindictive little shit.

Expect the vulture capitalists to try and pick up bargains after yesterday’s debacle, but the problem is that the fundamentals are no different than yesterday. The markets fell because this isn’t contained, Trump had a single semi-coherent presser where he indicated that this will go on for months, and almost immediately after began attacking Cuomo when Cuomo pointed out the dire need to expand bed capacity (because we’re not going to be able to flatten the curve enough).

His apologists are busy saying Trump couldn’t have done any better, when it’s clear that he ignored the problem until after it was spreading like wildfire across nation uncontrolled.

That Trump mentioned WV having no cases is proof that this isn’t a crisis shows how much he isn’t listening to the public health experts.

WV doesn’t have cases because they’re not testing for covid19. The Trumpist governor there has had all of 50 tests conducted since this started. If you don’t test, you don’t know.

WV took the Trump strategy, and it will cost them dearly (a population that is older, sicker on average, and with a worse life expectancy than most other states especially outside the deep south). WV has a life expectancy of 75 years old. The national average is 78.7. WV ranks 50 out of 51 (only MS is worse).

The great debate happening in the UK right now is that to do severe lockdowns of the entire population is too expensive. Too much impact on the whole economy will in the end cause more problems than going into full war-time mode of building more facilities to house the sick and dying.

It’s something we’re going to have to face real soon. People are not going to put up with many weeks of a lockdown.

That’s a genuinely intriguing hypothesis.

In France, when the government said you can’t leave your home except for a few specific reasons, people moped but accepted it. In the U.S., there would likely be massive pushback against such an order. How could the police ever enforce it if someone they stopped claimed to be going to a doctor or a supermarket? It would be unmanageable. Such an order could only work in a country in which people trusted the government to rely on experts, do the right thing, and tell them the truth. The U.S. isn’t one of those anymore. we’re going to have to face real soon. People are not going to put up with many weeks of a lockdown

I thought of the perfect analogy for how we should be reacting to this: A fire. When the fire alarm goes off at home or at work, we don’t just determine which room the fire’s in and only clear people from there, we clear the whole building. And if we find out later that someone used an extinguisher to put it out, we don’t agree that the best reaction was to stay put.

Also, for people claiming that this is infringing in our rights - “Whatever happened to ‘give me liberty or give me death’” someone wrote yesterday - we are at war with a virus. And when Payne wrote that, he wasn’t encouraging colonial troops to go off and do whatever they wanted, nor was he encouraging people to not support the war efforts: “I’m sorry, but my right to be free means you don’t need any of my food.”

Gotta say, people who were evil and competent would STILL be worse.

I don’t know that I can agree while we’re in a pandemic.

There isn’t much that the evil can do to citzens or even official subjects when it’s somewhat illegal even to just jail them until after the public-health restrictions lift.

Now if we get out of it before the next animal disease makes the human-to-human-transmission jump, yes, for the period until that one leads to renewed shutdowns, the incompetent evil would be better to be around than the competent one.

re: #224 I Don’t Take Responsibility At All (dangerman)

The current need for social distancing is to prevent what happened in Italy - hospitals and especially health care providers being overwhelmed.

I understand why the original UK plan was made, I think. And that Boris was under pressure to do more severe measures, and now has acquiesced a bit.

This weeks push to lockdown the US is to keep our hospitals from being overwhelmed, because we have very little spare capacity. That is a “feature”, not a bug, in a for-profit health care system.

But our hospitals are going to be overwhelmed shortly unless very, very severe lockdowns happen right now. Meaning no one goes outdoors for a few weeks, other than people necessary to deliver groceries and medicine.

There is no way to prevent myself from getting infected at the grocery store - it’s so crowded now with people. It’s going to happen. I only hope that in my case I will have few symptoms. The virus is in the community now.

I have a friend who spent his youth living on the deer he poached for his family. Local law knew he was but because they never took more than they needed to, they looked the other way. Hell, on occasion when there were road kill deer, they called him so they knew it would not be a waste.

My grandfather made it through the winter of 1934 because he had 8 (eight) rifle bullets that he used to take down deer. He lived in a shack with a buddy, burning furniture to keep warm in the Wisconsin winter.

This was after he had worked and slaved for 3 years in the Oregon woods for the WPA to save up enough money to buy back the family farm … only to see the bank collapse and take all his money AGAIN.

If Amazon breaks the world ends:

Amazon stops receiving non-essential products from sellers amid coronavirus outbreak

amazon.com Inc is suspending sellers from sending non-essential products to its U.S. and U.K. warehouses until April 5 in the latest move to free up inventory space for much-needed supplies that are in shortage as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

In a note sent to sellers on Tuesday, Amazon said it is seeing increasing online shopping demand from consumers. As its household staples and medical supplies are running out of stock, it will prioritize certain categories in order to “quickly receive, restock, and ship these products to customers.”

What really happened is that Hugh Hewitt put those words in Fauci’s mouth. Hewitt pressed on Fauci on why the testing snafu, and Fauci said it is no one’s fault, just a random error in making the original US kits.

So, roughly 10% of those who get tested are confirmed to have covid19 in NY - 10,000 tests administered thus far. NY continues to see cases rise exponentially. 1300 cases in NY. 12 dead.

By way of comparison, WV has tested 50 people in total.

Both are woefully inadequate, but WV isn’t even bothering to test at all, which is why they will suddenly see widespread cases, and the health of those in WV is particularly worse than everyone else in nation other than Mississippi residents. That will have an effect on outcomes too.

My Facebook rant. It’s Public for all you not on the Zuckerblog. I’m fired up.

I saw some data that the first signs of infection curves might be showing some flattening. A few days are needed to confirm if it’s signal or noise, but it’s a good sign so far.

I’m also thinking of an analogy between climate change and pandemic response: climate change is much slower, hard to see the results in real time and likewise hard to notice the ideology warping the perception of it. Pandemic situations speed everything up and we can see ideologic response in a much faster time frame, lays it bare. I’m going to simmer on this more but I think a deep dive essay on this is in order. The anti science party kills people, harder to see in climate change, but it’s very clear during a pandemic.

They shouldn’t be using the words “susceptibility” or “risk”. This is not a proper study design to use such metrics. These data are prevalence. If they are attempting to convey risk/susceptibility, they need a healthy control group. This paper will not be accepted for publication in its current form in any reputable journal.

Representative Banks last night illustrated part of the plan with China-bashing:

Rep. Jim Banks thinks China needs to pay the United States for the spread of the coronavirus.

The Indiana Republican told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson Monday night that the U.S. needs to hold China accountable for the crisis the coronavirus has caused stateside, which could including making the communist country forgive a chunk of America’s debt.

Carlson said during the segment: “The coronavirus is a Chinese virus, no matter what they are telling you. It originated in China and was able to spread to the rest of the world because the Chinese government hid the truth of what was happening early in the outbreak from the rest of the world. They lied about it, and that caused the terrible consequences we are watching now. You can blame China for that.”

Banks responded that holding the country responsible should be in a financial manner.

“We need to start by forcing China to pay the burden and the cost incurred on the United States of America due to the coronavirus. I think there are many ways that we can do that,” Banks said.

Large jump in cases in Germany, and six more deaths there.

So far the case death rate in Germany has been very low, probably because they are doing large testing sweeps, and in part because people are getting good health care.

But even Germany will find it hard to handle in a few weeks, no matter if they had many more available health care resources than the US.

Inside the Republican Party and the conservative movement that Trump commands, there is now a deep divide as the nation confronts the coronavirus. Even in recent days, as much of the world shuts down to try to stop its spread, some Republicans mocked what they saw as a media-generated frenzy.”

Mnuchin: Individuals will be able to defer up to $1 million in tax payments due to coronavirus

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Tuesday said that individuals will be able to defer up to $1 million in tax payments to the IRS for 90 days in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

So y’all here can keep your millions an extra 90 days!

With the coronavirus disrupting the global theater marketplace, Universal Pictures is making some of its current film releases available on demand starting this week, the studio announced Monday.

The Comcast-owned studio and its specialty label Focus Features will make films such as “The Invisible Man,” “The Hunt” and “Emma,” all of which are currently playing in theaters, available to rent on demand services such as Comcast (CCZ), Sky, Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) on Friday. Consumers will be able to rent the films for $19.99 per film for 48 hours.

DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls World Tour” will be also on demand starting on April 10, the same day it’s set to be released in North American theaters.

re: #72 A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!

I buy coffee from Peet’s, but I don’t know whether they’ll be able to stay open under the current rules.

What’s your recommended blend? Since I refuse to go out I’ve gotten really into making pour overs for myself and Dad. I bought a bag of their Petes French Roast a few days ago because his Folgers crystals were not going to get us through this shit.

That’s a pretty lame excuse, when other countries deployed tests, including the WHO tests, rapidly. That’s how Japan and South Korea acted so quickly.

(You have to like dark roast, but if you like their French Roast, that’s not a problem.)

One part each of Costa Rica (dark, not Aurora), Italian Roast, House Blend, Major Dickason’s Blend.

There’s no substitute for Costa Rica, but French Roast can be substituted for Italian (I find Italian a bit smoother), and the blends substitute for each other.

Mel Brooks can always make me laugh, but Max Brooks make me think of zombies. Not comforting at all. In fact, the anti-zombie protocol they use to retake the world, which in the novel comes from a South African military planner who had contagious disease in mind when he wrote the plans, starts by cold-bloodedly cutting off whole territories and letting everyone in them die, to improve the chances for other territories.

This happened today on my conference call
Last day in the office for a while because I’m being sent home to telework for a while

Btw connecting at work no better than at home 😐

But lots of funny dark humor jokes on the call once we switched to iPhone conference call vs phone bridge (only 3 lines used on this one call)

Laughing may be something that saves us after all. I felt like hell before call and much better afterwards
