Trust me, we are not all smarter. Gen X is riddled with knuckleheads.

If there’s any real advantage it’s that we’re in the age sweet spot, healthier than older folk but with the caution and slower pace that comes with maturity.

It’s Normalcy Bias. The mainstream media did it with Trump, now we’re doing it with this Pandemic. There is a huge lesson to be learned from it. Yesterday I watched a pandemic/virologist be interviewed and the news anchor was practically arguing with him doing the ‘Sir, you can’t be serious’ with him and he was just a rock saying ‘Look, I’m giving you the math, it’s quite simple. The math doesn’t lie.’

Not making an excuse for it, but this is why many non-Trumpers assisted Trumpism and continue to do so.

socialism and government bailouts suck
until *I* need it

“The government’s economic stimulus is set to quickly balloon into trillion-dollar territory in the coming days, the largest rescue in modern American history, as major industries flood the Trump administration and Capitol Hill for aid while huge swaths of the economy stall from the coronavirus crisis,” Politico reports.

re: #19 EPR-radar

Everything about a pandemic is a math and logistics problem.

You have variables:
beds, cases, time, rate of doubling, population size, ease of transmission, ICU units, surge capacity

You have to solve for being able to keep your health care system intact, which means avoiding a situation where the cases exceeds your bed/ICU/surge capacity.

Flattening the curve gives you time and space to do so. Social distancing. Canceling events, etc. all means to reduce spread.

Trump failed to flatten the curve, and it took states to do this in a haphazard manner. Trump’s the one who decided that the mayor in Jaws is the true role model, not Roy Scheider. Keep the beaches open. Ignore the problem and it will go away.

This isn’t going away.

Since my gym just closed, I don’t have to ask myself whether to go. I live on a hill, so aerobic exercise won’t be a problem, but need to work up the will to do the indoor stuff (I have worked up the routines, so there’s that).

Right-wing media really jumping on the Politifact evaluation of Biden’s claim that the US turned down WHO tests. Politifact rated the claim “mostly false”.

Of course these sites ignore all the times Politifact rated Trump straight up “false”.

In regards to Biden, Politifact points out that there was no explicit offer by the WHO to provide the US kits. But as also noted, the WHO Americas office is set up to help those countries without a virology capability themselves, and since the US has such a capability it is not normal for the WHO to then provide the US with such aid.

I do wish that Biden would have been better briefed. What Biden should have said is that the Trump administration should have asked the WHO in the first place.

There is no way to parse every syllable that comes out of your mouth in a live situation. I get what you are saying but really, there’s just no way to do that.

I record a lot of my meetings and then go back and listen and it is amazing what is said in a moment. I know some things I said was flat out wrong…but it was how I said it and it was in the moment, and it simply came out wrong. But that wrong was still wrong. It is in no way indicative that I didn’t know what I was talking about, it was the words that fell out of my mouth…in that moment.

i may give some money to a charity knowing it ‘might’ go to pencils and not helping the animals, or kids, or research directly

No one gives money to a candidate knowing it might be misused, ok, stolen and spent on affairs and bimbos (sorry) and NOT on the campaign

(well of course they do now)

this is the worst kind of reprehensible theft.

re: #40 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Sure, everybody makes mistakes when speaking.

But if you’re going to campaign on how Trump messed up the response to COVID-19, I think it is imperative that one gets the message correct.

Biden could have, should have, come out with a statement after the debate that he misspoke. But I don’t know if his close campaign advisors are as up on this pandemic as we hope.

Things are moving fast, as I keep repeating. Biden keeping up on things is going to require his staff to brief him more than once a day and keep him on target.

This is very problematic to me: ultimately Biden is a defensive pick by the Democrats, and came about for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that Bernie poisoned the well once again. I do fear that Biden is not going to come off as sharp as needed against Trump. We are all betting on the idea that Biden is comforting to those in the middle who really don’t keep up on things. That gamble may pay off - a lot of people don’t like Trump.

This is true of any campaign at this time, not just Biden’s. Ultimately, the message is Trump has screwed up the response and it’s going to cost American lives. Just because a candidate doesn’t get that 100% right all the time doesn’t change the fact that Trump is going to get people killed.

JHU: 5702 cases, 94 dead. Mortality rate: 1.6% - 16 times higher than seasonal flu.

Cases appear to be doubling every 2-3 days. And the pace of the growth means that we’re likely to overtake South Korea very shortly. We do not have a handle on any of this, especially when GOPers didn’t take this seriously for weeks.

So, by 3/20, we could have 10k cases.; 3/23 20k cases, 3/26 40k cases; 3/29 80k cases. It doesn’t take a math wiz to figure out how many cases we’ll be dealing with just doing the goddamned math. They still aren’t doing enough testing, which means these figures are still low.

Navy shutters Naval Base San Diego schoolhouse amid coronavirus cluster

Navy leaders closed Training Support Command San Diego on Saturday after three sailors tested positive for the new coronavirus, officials finally announced Tuesday.

Medical investigators have linked at least two of the cases to the schoolhouse and a third is strongly suspected, which is why it’s closed indefinitely.

On March 14, a sailor from the amphibious warship Essex who was attending a course at Training Support Command tested positive for COVID-19, according to a prepared statement issued by Naval Education and Training Command.

[…]

Two additional cases involve a sailor at the training center and a sailor who was assigned to Naval Base Point Loma. The latter sailor showed no signs of the illness but was tested and the results were positive for COVID-19.

Those sailors and all others who came into contact with them have been ordered to remain in their residences or quarters.

[…]

I’m just going with the idea that the virus is in the community in San Diego county, though we don’t have a shelter-in-place order yet. It was indicated as in the community several days ago. I suspect by the end of the week this county will follow the ones up north in closing everything down.

I actually find the growth in case numbers a bit encouraging. Means more tests are being conducted.
Bad news. South Korea’s ID’d case numbers are based on a massively higher level of testing

NYC: Order to shelter in place may come within next 48 hours in attempt to flatten the curve.

NYC cases continue growing. New: 187 | Total: 644. It’s doubling once every 2-3 days. With more aggressive testing, we’ll see the cases rise even more, but we’ll have a better understanding of the severity and hope that we can flatten the curve.

We must all expect to contract the virus over the next year. Many of us over the next few months.

I have in place:
1) liquids with electrolytes (but I won’t water the plants with it, really I won’t.)
2) canned soups.
3) acetaminophen.

Hopefully when I get it the symptoms will be mild.

then too many people will ‘relax’ and return to ‘normal’ thus spreading it all over again

unfortunately, I think the key is to not catch the virus at a peak time when the medical system is overwhelmed. Unfortunately, again, the system could be overwhelmed from very soon to past April. For Michigan I saw the est. time we run out of beds is April 27th.

I had ‘The Talk’ with the Wife Unit last night and literally saw/felt Normalcy Bias in my own mind. I pushed her to think about what we would do if I got symptoms: lock me in bedroom and have her sleep with mom? I saw/felt her getting uncomfortable as only a married couple together for 20 years can do. I felt like changing the subject because I felt her discomfort and wanted to protect her. But I pressed on: we need to think of this now so when it happens we move to protocol; it will probably happen sooner than we think; how long to maintain protocol? We should have two/three weeks of supplies so we don’t go out and spread, how will we deal with that?

I feel better now, but it was tough. Plus mom made some Filipino food and that sorta busted us out of the worried mindset.

Originally figured I’d get around to finishing them and a few other unread books by summer, but that was just before the effective lockdown set in place the past few days in this corner of the world.
Now I figure they’ll be read by the end of the month.

Some light reading for the lockdown days

I braved Costco this morning, the first day of our “shelter in place” (except for stuff like grocery shopping.) They opened early so when I arrived a few minutes before official opening there were already a few people leaving and no line, though we were sent around to a specific “corridor” to enter. Big sign advising they were out of TP, paper towels, hand sanitizer, gloves, bottled water, and Clorox wipes. I was undeterred as I wasn’t looking for any of those. They were out of the black rice crackers I wanted, or at least I didn’t see them, but I got the rest of the stuff I wanted and out the door without excessive exposure. I did wear gloves, though.
Then I stopped at my little local grocer who looked like the place had been hit by a plague of locusts. I’m sure they don’t restock overnight like the big places, and it was all hands on deck restocking stuff while I was there. I still managed to get what I needed, buying for a full week as opposed to the usual 4 days, but otherwise not hoarding. Unless 3 lbs of asparagus (soup!) is hoarding.
My daughter will be relieved that I don’t need to go out again for a while. She worries.

re: #114 I Don’t Take Responsibility At All (dangerman)

my guess:

it’ll likely flatten the true curve (forget the ‘official’ numbers)

then too many people will ‘relax’ and return to ‘normal’ thus spreading it all over again

I’m honestly wondering if, even when public transport and public accommodations re-open, we’ll have to switch to a permanent restriction of seating to give each person a three-foot radius. That would cut transport capacity by at least half and maybe more, and do if anything an even worse number on sports-venue seating capacities.

But this isn’t the worst thing out there that will have enough time to spread from the wrong wild animal before it kills it, and eventually hang around in the wrong human long enough, before it also kills them, to evolve human-to-human transmission. There’s no path forward that doesn’t add as many diseases to the human environment as the Pastoral Revolution did.

We don’t have great documentation as to what that looked like to the people domesticating livestock, but we do have a good record of what happened when carriers-who’d-evolved-asymptomaticity but-still-shed-pathogens encountered people who hadn’t kept livestock for millennia.

It’s why there have never been enough First Nations people in North America, after 1650, to outnumber whites.

I would say “be prepared to get it.” Actual infections even in the hardest-hit areas aren’t even up to 1% of the population, and the one thing we don’t and can’t know without a whole lot more data is how many people are susceptible.

So more great (///) news from the Big Apple - I’ve just found out our doctor (GP) was “advised by the hospital” to close his office until after 3/31, so no medical visits for us for the next couple of weeks. (I’m OK for now, Mrs. Jay has serious issues that could really use a MD visit, but there we are) The doctor’s office will still be issuing prescriptions for their regulars, but damn: though I can see the logic behind it, it’s still a bummer that medical practices are (with the exception of hospital ERs, I suppose) among the closure-prone businesses.

Latest update from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

March 17

In collaboration with the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness & Response and the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine supported an operation to bring home eight Nebraskans who had been passengers on the Grand Princess cruise ship. The individuals will quarantine in their homes and be monitored by local public health officials

One remaining evacuee from the Diamond Princess cruise ship might leave the National Quarantine Unit in the next day or two, pending test results.

A 36-year-old Omaha woman remains in critical condition, while a former Diamond Princess passenger who suffered a fall continues in good condition.

For those who might be experiencing symptoms, instructions are available here. This link also offers resources, guidelines and links to trusted sources for area residents and businesses as they take measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Cases in the U.S. have reached about 4,800, with about 95 deaths. Worldwide, cases stand at about 190,000, with more than 7,500 deaths.

Nothing Trump did was done with a sense of urgency except to try and game the markets to his advantage.

He’s let resources waste away.
He’s ignored the experts, other than the ones he fired and disbanded before this - as a money saving operation.

Public health is a full time job. Pandemic prevention is a full time job. Pandemics happen precisely because some dumbass know nothing ignores all the warning signs, refuses to take aggressive action to curtail the spread, and then claims he’s doing a great job all while saying that the only thing that matters is keep the count low because it might hurt him politically in November.

It should motherfucking destroy him in November - and now. But his know nothing base continues to protect the fucker, exactly as McConnell keeps doing. They’re perfectly fine with this and see it as an opportunity to game the system so the millionaires get richer and everyone else is fucked.

We have MASH equipment. We have stockpiles of gear. Trump’s not dipping into any of it.

Why? This is their fucking purpose.

Just dropping in a for a few minutes. I’m still here, still okay. I still have to work but my company is offering a paid 14 day leave for anyone over 60 or who is immunocompromised so we’re down quite a few hands for awhile. They’ve actually offered unlimited OT for those who want to come in and hold the fort down.

My doctor prescribed me an anti-anxiety medication to help me keep my head on straight during this mess so we’ll see if that helps. Unfortunately, like most medications of that type, it’ll take awhile for me to get the full effect.

Hang in there, everyone. We can pull through this.

TThe duck and cover drills were just absurd and had to fuck with people’s heads.

We never had that in the UK. The timing for an IRBM attack was never more than four minutes warning, but even for a bomber attack nobody thought you had a chance. The UK abandoned all civil defence measures in the 1950’s, it was just assumed to be a waste of money and time.

(Lightning interceptor pilot doctrine was they could each get up to 4 bombers — two with air to air missiles, one with the 20mm cannon, the last with the plane. No point about trying to get back to base, there’d be no place to land.)

As DOD pointed out in a briefing yesterday, military medical set ups are not really useful for infectious disease treatment. Especially hospital ships, whose wards are rather closely packed.
Deployable medical infrastructure is designed for trauma care. While the military’s hospital system in the US is set up for day to day treatments. Think sports injury and neonatal and such.

Also most of the military medical system resides in the Guard and Reserves. Which means those personnel would need to be pulled from their current medical treatment positions.

Now, military field hospitals could be of some assistance to relieve the civil medical infrastructure in caring for non-virus patients

From a friend on FB:

“Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.

But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.

‘A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts’, Mead said.

We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.”

Our drills involved being released from school (on foot!) when the air raid sirens activated, and then timed for how long we took to either get home or arrive at one of the Civil Defense shelters.

as the years passed, the sense of imminent death was just about inevitable.

Working at home, called the local Chinese place for broccoli beef because I figured Henry really needed the business. He said he was sorry he had no broccoli but he could make asparagus beef. Told him it didn’t matter to me he needs the business. He started to tear up because other people got nasty about not getting broccoli beef...Feezus Jucking Key-Ryest selfish people are motherfathering assholes!

MN has closed bars and restaurants now too.

I had heard a story about popular NY restaurants getting backed up for weeks of orders, so I called a local restaurant to find out how they’re handling to-go orders. He said just call it in 10 minutes early and call again when I’m at the back door. He was kind of happily surprised that I was calling to check. This is from a place called Shamrocks that would have been packed to the gills with St. Pat’s day patrons. They’re known for their tremendous hamberders.

Part of my mental health routine while we’re locked up is to not spend my whole day on line, but to go do something constructive every so often. So I’m going to do that.

Tomorrow I start a “go for a walk every day” routine as well, because in addition to staying away from people for the last week because COVID, and the 3 weeks of doing the same looming ahead, I was sick for 3 weeks before that and could start chewing the woodwork at any moment.

It is a seriously good thing that I don’t require a huge amount of social stimulation and am generally pretty happy at home.

I will BBL

I’m going to become that most rare of creatures - an Oklahoma City resident who walks. We moved here last year (my wife’s hometown) and I’m still so surprised by how few people walk anywhere. I’ve done plenty of long-distance hiking, so I think I’m going to go full-on urban hiker and start blogging about it.
As for today’s sanity making activities, I just popped a batch of peach scones in the oven. Yay stress baking!

I doubt I’ve posted much over the years on LGF about my work. Here’s the missive I just posted on Facebook for my friends. I’m learning a lot from Lizard survival stories, so why not share one of mine.

Hi friends! If any of you need help transitioning your existing business or work to life online, or have been thrust into the position where you need to figure out how to move forward professionally from home, let me know.
I’m a professional editor and website designer, and fortunately just completed a major update to my own online presence last month in order to find more clients.
I have over ten years of experience working remotely on major communications projects, and have a lot of advanced skills in online marketing, business plan development, content creation, website design, project management, and more.
We’ll all be transformed I expect over the coming months, our work lives included. I’m hoping one way I can be of service, and continue to grow in my own career, is by helping people who have long thought about striking out into online work, or need a better website for their business, but haven’t yet had the resources and motivation.
My wife and I plan on doing more blogging, and will likely start publishing tips and other helpful content via my pro Facebook page and other platforms. And definitely message us even if you’re just brainstorming. #WeGotThis

Not everyone will be exposed. Not everyone who is exposed will get the virus. Most who get the virus will have a mild case. And as time passes, the medical community will be better equipped to know what to do for the more severe cases. So please don’t beat up on yourself.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday the upper chamber will pass the House’s second coronavirus funding package without changes.

The decision comes despite some vocal GOP opposition to the measure over concerns about its impact on small businesses.

“With regard to the bill that came over from the House, there was some discussion about whether to amendment that with a bigger proposal, because we all know a bigger proposal is necessary. But I’ve decided we’re going to go on and vote as soon as the Senate can get permission to vote on the bill that came over from the House, send it down to the president for signature,” McConnell told reporters.

Asked about pushback from within his caucus, he added, “My counsel to them is to gag and vote for it anyway.”

I have in place:
1) liquids with electrolytes (but I won’t water the plants with it, really I won’t.)
2) canned soups.
3) acetaminophen.

Hopefully when I get it the symptoms will be mild.

The bottom line is, if you contract COVID-19 - it’s best to get it early before the hospitals triage.

Public transportation organizations are taking extraordinary efforts to protect the health and safety of riders and employees while working tirelessly to maintain essential services. We want to ensure that the federal government includes aid to public transportation agencies to help offset the additional costs and lost revenue related to COVID-19.

And a big serious question: if the ARC is asking for blood donations from “healthy residents”, how does one know if they are “healthy”, in the absence of adequate testing?

I mean, I’d be happy to spare a pint or two of the old B+, but without being able (AFACBD) to tell if I’m infected or not, it would be a waste of my (and their) time - and blood.

On that note:

The coronavirus pandemic isn’t a ‘black swan.’ It’s a gray rhino.

A “black swan” is the term of art for something that is highly improbable, even unimaginable…

The gray rhino is the massive two-ton thing with its horn pointed at you, stomping the ground and getting ready to charge — and, most important, giving you the chance to act.

Yes, but they’ve announced a reduced service (which is a bit odd, reduced service means
increased promiscuity(*), right?)

((*)In the French(**) sense of the term, of course…)

((**) In French “promiscuity” means closeness(***))

((***) so, not so different then…)

(Ed: Stop it with these bloody footnotes).

Boston just put its system on a reduced (Saturday-level) schedule. We have the same concerns about crowding; the 455 bus that runs from Salem to the Wonderland Blue Line stop in Revere is often very crowded on a normal Saturday. Weekdays are impossible. And the commuter rail doesn’t have many trips in the early morning, so people are pushing back.

It wasn’t that crowded on the bus when I was food shopping yesterday, but that’s my fear. Delivery is a luxury service—let’s be frank about that! I and a lot of neighbors and friends cannot use that service.

I wonder if this is some sort of fuckery, like “We *wanted* to go bigger, but were pressured to accept what the House passed. It’s not our fault you didn’t get more, blame the dems.”

Or, alternatively, the Senate Republicans spent the weekend trying to figure out how to lard the House aid bill with their favorite corporate giveaways and/or fat-cat tax breaks, but ran into the problem of bad optics: and probably figured out it wasn’t worth the hassle right now.
After all, there are eight months til the election: plenty of time to load up the porkbarrel….

Hello from Glasgow, Scotland! I’ve been working at home since last Friday. My work is lucky enough to be one of those sorts of companies that work with different clients, and so we have each a company laptop so we can do working on-site. Thus, we’re capable to work from home if needed. Last Tuesday, we were advised to take out laptops home with us each day, just in case we needed to work from home. Two days later, we were advised to work from home, So, I’ve been working from home since Friday.

So, over the past three days of working from home:

* Over those three days, the amount of people in our company working from home has gone from 50%, to 75%, to basically everyone.
* Every morning, the work has a general meeting on Microsoft Teams. It only lasts about 15 minutes, but you see all these people you know from the office, alone and in their home environments, and it feels really weird, because we’re still acting as a team.
* Went the local Lidl’s yesterday at lunchtime. No loo roll, no shaving foam or gel, no pasta- apart from Pot Noodle.
* Had to go into the office today to pick up something. Only one other people in the office, and he was going to leave in about 15 mins. I was there less than 5 mins.
* Glasgow city centre noticeably quieter than usual
* Some drink/food places shut, but a lot that are still open no longer accept cash payments, but contactless card payments.
* There might be no loo roll in the big supermarkets, but the local newsagents are well stocked. (I was able to get loo roll and shaving foam there.) That might not last too long though…
* Went to my Mum’s (Who is 79) today and set up Skype on her laptop, and we had a lot of fun doing a test call to each other. If the country does need to go into lockdown, at least I’ll be able to Skype her, and we’ll be able to see each other’s face. Even then, it felt like a helluva risk to go to her house at all.

So I’m chilling out tonight with some music.

Came back in a few minutes and took off. Probably going to try to find another bar that’s open.

I pass a shitload of bars on my drive home on W 7th St. A couple of them had some down-&-outers hanging out in front like they didn’t know what else to do with their evening. It was pretty weird seeing St. Paul almost vacant on St. Pat’s day.

We were going to the Edinburgh International Harp Festival in early April, (She Who Must Be Obeyed is a damn skilled clarsach player, her axe is a Starfish 34-string Glenelle from the Davy’s up in Fort Campbell), but it got cancelled. Then were going to use our US -> UK tickets to just stay for a couple of weeks with SWMBO’s sister and our brother-in-law Robbie Thomas (founding member of Silly Wizard!) in Bedfordshire, but flights to the UK have now been cancelled.

We were also planning on visiting Gillean McDougall (late of BBC Scotland) an old dear friend of ours. This whole thing sucks.

Throughout most of my youth (as I mentioned above) we were pretty sure that the extinction of the human race would come about because of the inability of the human race to reject E. Teller.

(P.S. his reference to the exponential function there? More Malthusian bullshit).

Not all scientists are nice guys.

Exponential growth on a planet having finite resources is a problem, even after the excesses of the social Darwinists are properly removed from the mix.

But that exponential shows up in more contexts than just the one Teller had in mind there. E.g., disease outbreaks and nuclear chain reactions, to pick some not-random examples.

re: #51 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I agree, ultimately Biden is a defensive pick by the Democrats. Myself, I really like Warren. But also like myself, I think there are many who are hoping Biden turns out to be the ‘best’ pick. He has the experience and know-how. His health needs to hold up.

it also screws up your SS payment record, which determines how much your SS benefit will be when you retire.

Nobody mentions that pesky detail.

re: #304 austin_blue

Austin (Texas, not Minnesnowta) just shut down bars. Restaurants my stay in business if they shift to delivery/pick-up only. Movie theaters, no. Taco and other food trucks, open, but outdoor seating limited to no more than ten people.

Time frame, immediate. Duration, unknown.

This is a very, very service industry dependent town. It’s going to fuck a lot of people over. Damn tough for them. We know lots of servers. Many are also musicians.

It’s also the right thing for the City to do to flatten the curve.

That is how it is here in PA. Bars, restaurants can only take-out or delivery, LCB state stores as of 9:00 PM tonight (the only place you can buy liquor outside of a bar) until further notice, and non-essential establishments (there is a list somewhere).

Don’t understand the state store closing. Grocers and convenience stores are open, and the state store is nothing but a liquor convenience store. Some convenience stores are now allowed to sell beer and wine (state stores carry wine but no beer) so if someone wants that it is available, but no liquor can be had it seems.

Power & Politics

@PnPCBC
“If one person gets it and they truly isolate away from their family members then they don’t get it,” says Dr. Peter Lin as he explains how to self-isolate properly. “You’re supposed to be in one room, so you only contaminate one room.”

I am honestly so glad that I’m single right now. I’m automatically self isolated when I’m at home and I don’t have to change anything other than trying to stop touching my face. I can’t imagine trying to self isolate like this Dr recommends with anyone else in the house.
